I want to start by saying that the service here is lovely. All of the staff members I encountered were super sweet and welcoming. They each deserve five stars. Our server Mia had lovely etiquette and a bright smile! Additionally, the restaurant is designed and decorated prettily. Unfortunately, my review of the food will not be as warm as the service I received. I love Korean food because it's flavourful, nutritious, balanced, and many dishes offer a sweet and spicy flavour I love. This is the most watered down Korean food I've ever had. The 떡볶이 (tteokbokki) dish and it was disappointing. It was not spicy (?????) and had more cheese than rice cakes. The sauce had a nice consistency - even with the chorizo - and an attempt at flavour, but it was lacking. The quality of the ingredients in this dish were good, so that did not go unnoticed. The fried chicken was pretty but boring. Luckily, I still had sauce leftover from the previous dish so I dipped the wings into that. The meat was tougher than expected. Alas, the appetizers were so disappointing that we refrained from ordering entrées. I was fairly surprised. I'll be in Flushing this weekend. read more

the service here was amazing. all the servers were very attentive and kind. one of the servers even explained the menu and recommended dishes to us since it was our first time there. we loved the bulgogi, it was marinated really well. it was one of the bests we've ever had ! the spicy rice cakes also had an interesting flavor as well and it was definitely a change from regular tteokbokki. we ended our night with the beignets- it was so fresh, warm and soft. overall, we really enjoyed this place and had a nice experience ! read more

I've been to Haeyneo twice now. It's great spot serving upscale Korean specialties. They have a really creative and delicious set of cocktails with cute names. I've had th Merle the Pearl, Squid and Whale and Cranky Pants -- all were delicious! I love their starters. The dumplings are served piping hot, crispy and are a must order. Don't skip over just because you can't get dumplings at other places-- these are good. The rice cake fundido is spicy, cheese and th rice cakes are nicely chewy. We also got the crudo which was a nice contrast to the umani forward fundido. The crudo was light but tasty with pieces of yuzu fruit. Yum! For entrees, I've gotten the sable fish and the bouillabaisse. The sable fish is a nice portion size but didn't knock me over. And the bouillabaisse was chock full of seafood (mussels, clams, scallop, etc.) but the broth needs more flavor and a bit of salt. Ambience is really nice and great for date night and the service is fantastic! read more

Pretty busy on a searing hot Friday night. We walked in, spent a little time drinking rose at the bar, then were seated. A waiter eventually came over and asked us what we wanted. We were expecting a little information about the menu but didn't seem to get any of that. We inquired about a few items like the crudo, but she seemed to be new / mentioned she hadn't tried the dishes before. After we asked about the main dishes, she definitely recommended the spicy bouillabaisse, which turned out to be the most unimpressive of all. Fried chicken wings: 5/5 the highlight of our meal, unfortunately. Nice portion of six wings with a sweet/spicy sauce. Very meaty with good texture and crunch. Fried scallop: 4/5 a cooked scallop deep fried topped with uni and jalapeno, served over some "tartar sauce". Definitely did not taste like tartar sauce but instead some greek yogurt dressing of sorts that really didn't complement the dish. Spicy bouillabaisse: 3/5 weird fusion stew with one scallop, one shrimp, cod and a ton of the world's tiniest mussels. This really wasn't enough for two as the waiter described, and overall was an incredibly average dish. There was almost no flavor or complexity at all to the soup (just tasted red pepper powder) and barely any meat in the mussels. This was served with two pieces of bread that, when we asked for more of, were told it would be extra. Flourless chocolate cake: 4/5 not bad, a decadent chocolate cake topped with cream of sorts. Though really didn't feel like it connected with the rest of the menu, nor felt Korean in any way. Overall we were quite disappointed given Haenyo's numerous Michelin Bib Gourmand awards and Chef Jenny Kwak's many accolades. Putting aside the lack of knowledge on the service staff, their hurried/frenzied state whenever you got a chance to talk to them, at the core, Haenyo's food was just shockingly average. This is of course, with the exception of the chicken wings which were fire, and the banchan(free side dishes) which I thought were pretty good. read more

Haenyeo - Crispy Spicy Yang-Yum Chicken Wings - Korean Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

This was really outstanding -- among the best Korean places we've tried in the city, up there with Her Name Is Han (my other favorite Korean "comfort food" spot) and a slight notch below Kawi (which is more upscale). First visit, we came with a party of four and got the scallion pancakes, grilled oysters, rice cake fundido, sablefish, pork barbecue ssam, spicy kimchie chigae, bibimbap with spicy squid, and then finished with the beignets and warm chocolate cake. This was a pretty perfect amount of food for us -- we killed everything and were solidly full, but not sick. The fundido is as amazing as it looks, so no surprise there. What was a surprise was that the sablefish was maybe our favorite item of the night -- it's not overly huge, but it really was perfectly done. We really loved the pork and the bibimbap as well, although it would be very tempting to try the short rib ssam and the tuna sashimi bibimbap next time around. I'd probably try a different chigae as well -- the spicy kimchi was very good, but didn't blow us away. Overall, an amazing meal and I hope we get back here sooner rather than later. read more

Luck be a lady tonight! A friend and I had planned on trying a restaurant in our neighborhood, so we chose this one, as I had flagged it as a "want to try," but I forget why. Turns out, the New York Times came out with a stellar review on it the very same day we planned to attend. He even called me a bit frantic midday, "Should we still go?! Do you think it will be packed??" My response was that, on the contrary, we should go IMMEDIATELY, and I'm glad we did. Adding to the luck, we arrived about three minutes before an epic downpour - at about 6:30pm - and the restaurant still had plenty of seating. I started with their Squid & the Whale cocktail, which consisted of mizu lemongrass shochu, with frothy egg whites on top and delicious, aromatic sesame oil on top of that. It was several different separated flavors in each sip - delicious. As everything on the menu looked good, we decided on the following items: - Grilled oysters with seaweed butter and brioche toast: absolutely delicious. I haven't had grilled oysters this good since New Orleans. Could have eaten 100 more. - Zucchini & perilla leaf scallion pancake: a must try in Korean food, and did not disappoint - Grilled mackerel - if you read the NYT article, you will learn that "haenyeo" are women divers who dive up to 30 feet deep, holding their breath for several minutes, to retrieve the fish. As a lover of anything "strong woman" matriarchy-related, I was super excited to try the fish. It came with seaweed wraps and a delicious sauce - very much worth trying! - Boneless beef short rib barbecue, ssam, lettuce wraps: again, one of my favorite things in Korean food - BBQ short rib. Also came with a delicious sauce and lettuce wraps - delightful and I finished the whole thing. The final serendipity - at one point, I caught the glance of Chef Jenny Kwak as she was coming upstairs - recognized her from the article and mouthed her a quiet "congratulations". We were then surprised with a plate of the tender braised pork ribs that were out of this world!! It was as if she was saying to us, "I don't think you quite ordered correctly - you can't leave without trying these." And I'm SO GLAD she did. They were incredible and blew me away. As the night went on, the place did fill up, but it was not unmanageable - more typical of the kind of Tuesday night you'd expect at a restaurant in Park Slope. All in all, I can't wait to come back here. I have a new neighborhood favorite! Many thanks to Chef Kwak and her team. read more

Haenyeo - Scallion pancake and Saucy and Spicy Rice Cake Fundido - Korean Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

If you are looking for a restaurant with fantastic hospitality, mouthwatering food and legit outdoor seating then look no further - Haenyeo is where you should visit this upcoming weekend and of course weekdays as well. We had an early dinner on Friday and this place filled up quick - people were waiting for tables and I was glad to see this good sign. My waitress and the manager checked on us couple times during the meal - very attentive and warm. We shared the following items among three people: Crispy Wings [$12 - 5/5] - I never knew fried chicken wings can be this good. Super crispy skin just like how the menu described it. The meat was tender and flavorful. Sauce was sweet and sour with a kick of spiciness. A+++ item Dukboki Fundido [$16 - 4/5] - I initially had a low expectation on this one coz hey you know how cheese and rice cake taste like right but I was wrong. I was amazed by this! Oaxaca cheese and chorizo went so well together and some chemistry happened and don't ask me what it is but this dish was just so good! It wasn't greasy at all and very filling so I suggest ordering this if you have a big party Spicy Bouillabaisse [$34 - 3/5] - very generous in portion with a varieties of seafood. I was surprised how tender the scallop was. Mussels were meaty. Definitely order this to wow your guest Soft Shell Crabs Meuniere [$38 - 3/5] - this dish came with corn fried rice underneath and it was buttery and aromatic. I liked my soft shell crabs crispy but this one was a bit too soft to my likings. You should probably skip this one Sugar Dusted Beignet [$8 - 3/5] & Flourless Chocolate Cake [$9 - 3/5] - skip the desserts if you are full. You wouldn't be regret even if you don't try them read more

Came here for dinner last night. We ordered the mungbean kimchi pancake to start which weren't as chewy as we had anticipated but still delicious. For the mains, we got the rib eye with lettuce wraps and the chicken with carrots and potato. Out of the two, the ribeye was definitely the tastier. I loved adding the sauces to each wrap and it was delicious. The chicken was still good but not as flavorful as the beef. The dessert was definitely the highlight of the meal though. We got the beignets and those were FANTASTIC. Literally pillows with dusted sugar on them. We'll def be back for those specifically. We also order the makkeoli to share and that was tasty as well. read more

Pretty busy on a Saturday night - but got seated quickly. Try to make a reservation if possible. They have both indoor and outdoor dining but definitely more upscale than I expected. This is definitely a modern Korean type of restaurant - don't expect to get the traditional Korean dishes here. They didn't have any banchan either. We ordered the dishes below for two people, not too much food: Dukboki Fundido $16 - 3.5/5 - spicy cheesy rice cakes - much better than I expected actually. rice cakes were chewy and the cheese went well with the dish. BUT this is a really really really small dish. portion does not justify the price. Spicy Bouillabaisse $34 - 3/5 - seafood dish with fish, mussels, 1 scallop, shrimp and rice cakes - honestly nothing special. only the scallop was worth eating. Kimchi Chigae $19 - 3/5 - generous amount of pork belly slices but extremely underwhelming and non-flavorful compared to the traditional dish at a regular Korean restaurant. not worth ordering. Sugar Dusted Beignet $8 - 3/5 - nothing mind-blowing. simply just a beignet. i think they could have added ice cream and it would have made the dish much, much better. Overall, if you are in desperate need of Korean food and you cannot find another option, this may satisfy your craving. This is not your traditional Korean restaurant, so do not expect the same type of food. read more

Haenyeo - Sugar Dusted Beignets, The Squid & the Whale, - Korean Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

My husband and I had a lovely dinner here. Ambiance and service were wonderful- it's a perfect date night spot. Drinks were creative but expensive ($19), I particularly liked my "Squid and the Whale" though my husband's drink was mostly just a block of ice. The food was ok -- I was hoping it would be a little more inventive, but it's mostly classic Korean fare. We loved the oysters (although the serving was small -- we got just 4, not 5 like in many of the pictures), the bulgogi, and the sesame creme brûlée. The bindae-tteok; however, was so heavily fried you could barely taste anything. In sum, I think this is a lovely spot but I will probably go elsewhere if craving Korean food. read more

I've been hearing so many reviews from friends about this place and it lived up to the expectations and more! Located on a charming corner, the atmosphere at Haenyeo is intimate yet so welcoming. The five of us tried many dishes and I recommend coming with a group to get a taste of everything as you'll want to get everything on the menu! Favorite apps: the rice cake with chorizo (so savory we were fighting over the extra sauce); grilled oysters; chicken wings (very juicy) Favorite dishes: the seafood bouillabaisse (the broth was so refreshing and came with uni toast); grilled sablefish (seasoned beautifully and great texture); braised mackerel For dessert, the were out of the beignets so we got the chocolate cake instead which was super rich and tasty. Will definitely come back again to try the beignets next time and of course all my favorite dishes again! read more

I've had Haenyeo bookmarked on Yelp for an entire six months before I was finally able to walk into one of the most booked restaurants in Brooklyn back in January 2020. Given the high traction this restaurant has received over the past couple of months, I had really high expectations going in. We ordered the spicy rice cake, roasted oysters, braised chicken, and a pork belly kimchi chigae. Admittedly, this was a bit too much food for a 6:30 dinner for two people, especially after a 2pm lunch, so I didn't have the biggest appetite. That said, as one can see from the below average review, everything that we had was very very average. The supposedly spicy rice cake must-get was WAY too carb heavy - think thick rice cakes dipped with even thicker stringey cheese. It was overwhelmingly much. My favorite part of the meal was probably the roasted oysters - the seaweed butter surprisingly matched the flavor profile of the raw oysters. The braised chicken was really tender and the potatoes were well-flavored, but it was nothing that I've ever had before. Lastly, the chigae was the most underwhelming chigae I've ever had. Aside from that, the service was also impeccably slow - we were there for over three hours and majority of the time during dinner was spent looking around for our waiter. read more

I moved down the street from this place and from the ambiance of the outdoor dining I have been wanting to check it out. I finally made it to their outdoor dining experience and im glad I did. The bistro lights make the atmosphere pleasant and now they have plastic barriers between tables for extra covid protection. A+ on the COVID adjustment. What about the food? Well they hit the mark with that too. This place had great seafood and creativity on the menu. I got the grilled sea bass. It was amazing and love the sauce. It was a bit spicy in a good way. Loved it. Prices went cheap, but were horrible either especially for the quality. I would definitely return to try more dishes. read more

The food here is not just good...it's orgasmic. Very few times have I been to a restaurant where every bite was just perfection, rolled up in flavorful bite after bite. It's so good. This is a solid modern Korean spot in prime Park Slope. It's in a great corner location with a well laid out space. It was busy on a Sunday evening before 7! They have a great selection of cocktails and diverse selection of food. Roasted Oysters Served grilled with some butter and shaved seaweed bits..I'm actually beginning to prefer these to raw oysters. Kimchee Beef Gyoza These were juicy with a slightly crispy skin. Good appie. Kimchee Pancake. This was my LEAST FAVORITE dish of the entire meal. This was too doughy and slightly burnt. Not a fan of anything burnt even slightly burnt. Seafood Bouillabaise The seafood was super fresh and a decent amount. It included sweet uni, tiger prawn, large scallop, clams, squid, and oysters. Soup base was flavorful and served with toasted baguette. Loved! Seafood Bibimbop The boys had this and they enjoyed the fresh ingredients paired together with rice and shredded veggies. A great place to stop in for cocktails and snacks or a full meal if in the area! read more

Was pleasantly surprised by this Korean restaurant in park slope. Usually when I want Korean food, I find myself having to trek to the city or queens, but I'm happy to know I can come here. I came with a group of friends without a reservation and was seated immediately. We ordered a bunch of items from the menu to try. For the appetizer we had the nokdu kimchi pancake. This is a specialty my family and I enjoy during New Years and other holidays, and it was pretty similar to what we eat! However, you only get served one pancake and it is pretty pricey for what you get. For entree, we ordered the wang galbi, the fried chicken, and the seafood bouillabaisse. My least favorite was the fried chicken because it was not as crispy and flavorful. I would probably skip this the next time. The wang galbi was marinated very well and comes with a side of lettuce (which you can ask for refills) and ssamjang. It was so delicious and I would definitely get this again. Finally, the seafood bouillabaisse was probably my favorite. It had very Korean flavors but also felt very foreign. There is a TON of seasfood in this dish ranging from mussels, fish, scallops, and even uni. We also got the bread to accompany the dish and it was so delicious soaked in the broth. They have an extensive drink menu with cocktails that sound very delicious. I opted for a glass of Riesling and it paired well with all the dishes. The service here is great, even when busy. My water glass never went empty. It is a little pricy but hey, when I'm in the mood for Korean food and wanna treat myself, I'll definitely be back! read more

As a big fan of Korean cuisine, I was extremely excited to stop in here after just one look at the menu. It looked to fuse traditional Korean cuisine with some really Interesting fusion, so I ordered as much as I could. Sharing a bunch of different things is definitely the move here, the more the merrier. I'll have to come back to try the things I didn't get to sample, but to start, the dumplings were perfectly fried and delicious, not the least bit greasy. The scallion pancake dish was also really well fried, flavorful, had a nice crunch from the zucchini and the perfect amount of spice. The real star of the appetizers was the Dukboki fundido, which was this deliciously cheesy dip with rice cakes and chorizo. There was a perfect amount of spice, the texture of the rice cakes was perfect and the cheese was just perfection. I went a bit more traditional with my main course with the Bulgogi. The bbq flavor was fantastic, the meat was so tender, It was definitely one of the better bulgogis i've ever had. Needless to say, I'll definitely be coming back for more. One additional note - definitely try a cocktail! They're so fun, creative and delicious, you won't regret it. read more

The hub and I have been wanting to try this place, so we came for our anniversary. (We love Korean food and periodically enjoy INSA, but we were looking forward to another riff on the cuisine, especially after all the hype. INSA is a bit annoying in that they don't take rezzies; also, their cocktails are meh, while the ones at Haenyeo looked compelling. To be clear, the food at INSA is consistently delicious.) Overall, a positive experience at Haenyeo and a thumb's-up. Do I think there are things they could improve? Absolutely. Let's start from the very beginning and hopefully cover all the things you wanna know before making a decision on whether to give this place a shot. The staff were welcoming, friendly, attentive. There are a few things they could be more mindful of, which I'll mention below. Cocktails -- nothing in particular caught my eye that night, but I knew the hub wanted to try the two tequila cocktails, so I ordered the spicy one (Pepper Margarita) and he ordered the smoky one (Smoking Uncle). Holy heck, the spicy one was way too spicy for me (the pineapple juice didn't balance it out enough for me), but he who has a high heat tolerance enjoyed it. He also liked the smoky concoction which isn't my jam so I didn't bother trying. I ended up getting a glass of bubbly, which was a perfect accompaniment to the spicy dishes we ended up getting. So thumbs up on the libations. Small plates -- I'd read about the spicy, cheesy rice cake dish (Dukboki Fundido), so we had to try that one. Yum! I have to say that the red sauce on it is quite spicy (again not too much for the hub; definitely less so than the spicy tequila cocktail), so I ate that part sparingly. Overall, big thumbs up for this yummy dish. Get it! Entrees -- I was excited to try a couple seafood dishes as that's the theme of the restaurant (the women who deep sea dive and collect the fruits of the sea), but was underwhelmed. First off, the very overpriced and entirely meh Spicy Bouillabaisse Bowl. Am I okay spending $39 for this dish typically? Yep, but this one was in a tiny narrow pot, making it impossible to get to the broth AND the small amount of seafood in there did not taste great (especially the shrimp which were an awful texture and the scallop which looked perfectly cooked but had no sweetness to it), and that's being kind. The one exception in there was the codfish, which was good. The little toasts that came with the dish (meant for dipping) were good and had some of yummy seaweed butter on them (sounds strange, perhaps, but was deelish), but we needed more than two small toasts to dip into the broth once we'd gotten through the seafood and could access it. This dish had next to no spice, which was surprising since that descriptor is in the name of the dish and the other stuff we had there that was intended to be spicy -- the cocktails and the small dish -- had a real kick. So an inconsistency in heat levels there. I was also put off by the fact that the lobster and shrimp still had shells on them. Yes, it provides visual interest and color, but someone has to get their hands super dirty removing the shells. And once I had done, it took a while to get the wait person's attention so that I could get a much-needed clean napkin. Perhaps that dish could be served with a warm cloth for cleaning one's hands or something along those lines. Second seafood dish was a traditional fish soup with some of the same seafood components -- and if those had been good (which they weren't), the dish would've been fine. I don't see it on the menu today, so can't provide the name of it. Circling back to service, they didn't seem aware of what we needed for implements...there was no large spoon provided for either of the soup-type entrees. Also, forks would've been handy as I found the slippery metal chopsticks hard to manage. Last entree for us was a traditional one - dulsot bibimbop (the one in the hot pot for which they charged an additional $2 over the cold version) with beef. It was delicious, a favorite dish of ours at most Korean restos. That said, it was $26 and seemed noticeably smaller than the portion of it one would get at INSA. But still, if you end up here and are fans of this class dish, get it! So overall, with a few not so small tweaks, I'd give this place a second try. At the very least, I'd go back for the two dishes we enjoyed there this time around. read more

TL;DR: Haenyeo is one of the best Korean restaurants in NYC Went a couple of weeks ago with friends and had an amazing time. Vibes, food, ambiance: all immaculate. Featuring arguably the best galbi-jjim in NYC with cocktails rivaling the esteemed branches from Angel's Share (e.g, Double Chicken, Sip and Guzzle); to top it all off, the story of this restaurant--the pioneering mother-daughter duo who fought against all odds to make it as Korean proprietors back when Korean restaurants were reviewed as alien, the incredibly warm and hospitable maitre'd/husband, Terrence, with his screenwriting roots (the delightful easter eggs like the pseudo-movie posters in the basement attest to this first love--makes it impossible not to fall in love with this place. read more

What a lovely spot! I made reservations a day before and we were seated the moment we stepped in. We had a nice window table for 4 for our 3 person party. Waitress was very friendly and offered excellent recommendations. Their cocktail menu all looked fantastic. I had a drink with whiskey and earl grey tea with a Chianti float and it was FANTASTIC. I can't remember what it's called, but if you see it on the menu, GET IT. We ordered: Crispy Spicy Yang-Yum Chicken Wings Saucy and Spicy Rice Cake Fundido Grilled Mackerel Bibimbop with Spicy Squid Sugar Dusted Beignets Sesame Creme Brulee The chicken wings were so good that we ended up getting another order. The wings were juicy on the inside and crispy and crunchy on the outside. The rice cake fundido is my ideal version of ddukbokki. I LOVE cheese on my ddukbokki! The bibimbop was very good, filled with lots of spicy squid. We all agreed that the sesame creme brulee was the better of the two desserts, but the beignets were still good. They do give you little banchans, like other Korean restaurants. Service was friendly and attentive. Our food came out in a very timely manner. read more

I came here for my friend's birthday dinner. We made a reservation for a Tuesday evening at 7 pm for a table of 6. The hostess/host was very accommodating to me changing the reservation twice--once to change it from Sunday to Tuesday and the second to change from 7 people to 6. When we got here, it was pretty busy for a Tuesday evening, as the restaurant was about 75% full. We were seated and brought out menus fairly quickly. After debating what to order for 10 minutes, we placed our order of drinks and dishes. The first appetizer came out 25 minutes after we placed our order, which was the mungbean and kimchi pancake. However, the other appetizers and the rest of the food took a REALLY long time for the food to come out. To be precise...over an HOUR. And that was after I went up to the manager/busboy to ask when the dishes would be out. Which was really frustrating to me, because while I am usually one to be more quiet and soft-spoken about customer service, I tried to flag down the waitress quite a few times, but she just beelined for her other customers and never bothered to check in with our table. And after 65 minutes, after I decided to go up to ask ANYONE about the estimated arrival time of our food, the busboy just answered back "it's coming right out" without knowing which table I was sitting at or what we had ordered. Which, I did not appreciate. I wished that even if the restaurant was understaffed or swamped that it was communicated to us, rather than us just waiting around not really knowing when to expect the food. We stayed at the restaurant for 2ish hours (from 7 pm to 9:15 pm) and only ate for 45 minutes. My cousin apparently timed it cause he was hangry.. We ordered a couple of cocktails and beers, as they have some beers on draft. I ordered the strawberry cocktail, which was quite refreshing and not too sweet. The seoul train was another cocktail ordered, and while I did not get to try that one, my friend did say good things about it. The quality of the food was overall, solid but not amazing. We ordered the pancake, cheesy rice cakes, the big seafood rice cake stew and added the garlic buttered toast, the fish, jalapeno fried chicken, galbi, and the kimchi tofu and the dumpling soup. Most of the food was comparable to a restaurant that you would find in K-town...except for the soups. The 2 soups that we ordered were quite flavorful and worth the $15-16. Overall, not sure if I would visit this restaurant again just because of the pretty poor service and slightly more expensive dishes than if you were to venture out into K-town. Bang not worth the buck in my opinion. **also, a 20% gratuity is already added to the bill for parties of at least 6 or more..we were charged that. And also, if you do plan to come here for a birthday celebration and plan to bring your own cake in, they charge an additional $3 plating fee per person. read more

We hit the jackpot when it came to ordering the right stuff off the menu. EVERYTHING we ate was explosively good. FRIED CHICKEN: I will admit I am not a big fried chicken kind of person (you know those people right?), but this was so good that I would've fought for that last wing (luckily, my BF prefers the leg, so we split things pretty nicely). It's perfectly crispy, perfectly saucy with both a savory and sweet kick. DUKBOKI FUNDIDO: This is the dish to get if you get anything at this restaurant. Every table will have it if they know what they're doing. Rice cakes alone are some of my favorite Korean food, but rice cakes swimming in gooey, melty cheese is heaven on earth. You will be fighting your dinner mates for that last bite. GRILLED OYSTERS: Excellent. The toast was a nice touch and allowed us to soak up more of that spicy sauce from the rice cakes. BULGOGI: They give you lettuce wraps and also perilla leaves! Personally, I love perilla leaves (similar to shiso, both of the mint family). It gave this dish some variety. The bulgogi even by itself, without the side of sauce that came with it, was very tasty. It also came with a small bowl of white rice, so you can create a more filling wrap. Service was excellent. They gave us more lettuce wraps and asked if we wanted more banchan (every dinner comes with side dishes like kimchi, pickles, dried sardines, etc.). We washed everything down with a bottle of soju. The perfect dinner. read more

KenScale: 7.25/10 Anyone who has seen my restaurant reviews will know that I (as well as my wife Jun) can be rather tough on Korean restaurants due to our background. I have debated with Jun whether our familiarity with Korean taste (and therefore perhaps a higher standard than other cuisines) should be taken into account when we encounter a Korean restaurant that we didn't particularly like, but ultimately decided that our childhood experience growing up in Seoul is part of our culinary identity that we should not shy away from or be apologetic about. Perhaps due to this reason, other than Atomix, Jun and I have not always had the best experience at Korean restaurants in New York City. Enter Haenyeo, a new Park Slope restaurant from chef-owner Jenny Kwak who has quietly been one of the leading influences of modern Korean cuisine in the city through restaurants Do Hwa and Dok Suni in downtown Manhattan. Did it change our minds about the general underwhelming quality of Korean restaurants in the city? Sadly, not so much, and it was one of the rare occasions where a single dish nearly destroyed the entire dining experience. The dishes at Haenyeo (which stands for a group of Korean women going deep into the water in wet suits to catch various types of shellfish, popularized on the southern island of Jeju) will not strike you as traditional Korean, which Jun and I wouldn't have minded so long as they were delicious. While I am generally cautious when it comes to a "fusion" type of food, I also know that a smart fusion done right can make a lot of difference. The first starter we shared, a dish of rice cake fundido (a modern take on the ubiquitous Korean snack tteokbokki) with chorizo, was off to a good start as we both enjoyed its spicy kick that made us reminisce about our childhood eating tteokbokki. And then the jalapeno chicken happened. Named "Dok Suni's jalapeno chicken" (according to our server, it was one of the signature dishes at Ms. Kwak's previous Dok Suni restaurant), it was one of the items that Jun was eagerly waiting for as she is a fried chicken enthusiast. After taking one bite, she looked at me with an utterly puzzling look and asked me to try a bite. The chicken looked quite aptly fried, but it was shockingly soggy. I tried other pieces and they were more or less the same soggy mess. Jun had to ask the server if there was perhaps a mishap at the kitchen that led us to this disaster but the server insisted that it was supposed to be prepared that way. Our experience with the chicken wasn't helped much by the other dishes. The grilled mackerel was rather skillfully done, but it was a straightforward mackerel with not much to remember about. I thought the bibimbop with tuna sashimi, uni, spicy cured cod roe, salmon roe and perilla lead was adequate, while Jun thought it was no better than what she eaten growing up at a department store food court. On our way home, we kept thinking about how our meal might have been different had we not ordered the chicken. Getting a reservation at Haenyeo wasn't too difficult although the dining room was nearly packed, mostly with local Brooklynites. There is full bar at the restaurant, including a high-end soju called West 32 Soju that is distilled in the local area. Out of curiosity we ordered a small bottle of reserve (which apparently was finished in American oak barrel). It tasted more elegant than the traditional soju, although it was not clear what the cucumber inside the shot glass to complement the liquor was supposed to accomplish. We did very much like the bright dining space with photos of the haenyeo grandmas hanging on the wall. Would we consider coming back to Haenyeo? It is hard to say after having one of the worst dishes of the year. There were certainly other dishes on the menu that piqued our interest that we didn't end up ordering. We will think about it more; maybe next time when we are in Park Slope and when we have no other good options in the neighborhood. read more

Had the best time here last night. We put in our names and they told us it was about an hour wait. We were seated at the bar in about 30 mins. Cocktails are a must. I had the chamomile whiskey sour with a red wine floater at the top. We got the kimchi pancakes and the saucy & spicy rice cake fundido (it had chorizo and cheese and was unreal.) It felt like home cooking. Next we had the bouillabaisse- mussels, fish, and some shellfish.. of course we got the bread. It was crispy and ready to sop up all the broth at the end. We shared another entree, the jalapeño fried chicken. My fave was the fundido and fried chicken, but honestly I would order them all again. The staff was efficient and kind, the ambience was casual but felt nice and fancy for our date night. read more

Waited for 40 min. And then each dish came so late. Being Korean and knowing how long it takes to make each dish...... all we experienced was disappointment. Too expensive for not so good food. Good lesson not to go where they don't have authentic Korean food. Not only we wasted money but also our time. read more

Haenyeo - Korean Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

YUM! If you're trying to get a table here, be prepared to need a reservation-- even on a Tuesday! This spot has friendly staff with a nice ambiance. Honestly would be perfect for date night. We came for drinks and small plates and left stuffed! We ordered the sesame noodles, rice cakes and scallion pancake. My favorite by a long shot was the rice cakes fundido-- can't recommend this any more!! The dish came out piping hot with the rice cakes perfectly cooked swimming in a spicy sauce with some crumbled meat and yes a cheese pull! The sesame noodles had a yummy sauce but the glass noodles were a tad bit gummy. Scallion pancake was good- nice and crispy. The other highlight was the beignets, which came out fresh out of the fryer doused in powdered sugar. It was light, crispy and not too greasy. Overall delicious meal, great experience and will venture back for more eats! read more

Portions are a bit small but food is tasty, a tad pricey. Water cress salad is well dressed, cheesy dum bokki leaves you wanting more, grilled oysters good flavor, jalapeño chicken crispy and tender, beef short rib coulda used more also. Beignets were just ok. Service was a tad slow even after a loud clang as my glass broke into my lap and on the floor. read more

First off, wanted to share that according to the restaurant's website, Haenyeo is named after the "legendary female divers from Jeju Island, South Korea.... These tough-as-nails women free-divers bear the elements year round to harvest seafood and seaweed. " That is pretty cool! I came here with a group of friends and we were seated promptly outside where they had a heating lamp and plastic to minimize the cold winter chills. I had the school girl cocktail and the lychee syrup in it was just enough to make it cozy and refreshing. For dinner I enjoyed the Sablefish, with came in a soy garlic sauce with bok choy. I did like this dish, though I forgot to switch the white rice for brown rice and the sauce was a bit strong, overpowering the taste of the sablefish. I tried the bulgogi as well and it was okay. I think if coming back, I'll order other dishes because for the price, I wanted to love the dishes. One sure thing was that service throughout dinner was stellar. read more
