I thought I would try someplace new instead of my regular sushi place in town. I thought it was convenient to be able to utilize an app to place my order. So, I placed my order put all my information and wait at the designated time and proceeded to go to Hachi. Upon my arrival, the facility was jam packed with people! I made my way to the register and asked for my order. The young man there stated he did not have an order with my name! He then began to look in the system and asked what my order actually was. I told him what the order was and then he passed it on as the owner/manager came out so frazzled and rude! What's the problem? And then grabs my phone out of my hand, as if to look for my order on my phone. I calmly asked for my phone back and told her that she would not find my order on my phone. She then went in the back and began to prepare my order or find my food.Comes back, hands me this box with food place with in it that I had to secure all the tops, place the items so that they were not going to fall and I would lose my food, and hold the box from the bottom because there was barely a bottom of the box. You all set, is what she said. She then pushes me out-of-the-way, and says "We busy!" There was no place for me to rest my food to go through the order so I trusted that she had all my items in there. I get home only to find, no sauces, no plastic ware, cold food, and an entire hibachi meal missing! I then had to return to pick up another meal that was cold! Never an apology - just " we busy". Somehow they were alerted to my review on FB- called and offered 10% off next meal. Again, no apology! And thus, NO SECOND MEAL FROM ME OR MY FAMILY! I was going to order a bubble tea when I got there. However, I saw all their tea items were not washed, and just sitting on a shelf. There were cleaning supplies on the same shelving with the food items. Also, I feared ordering as the person has a nut allergy and as the items were not washed there's a huge risk factor! A busy business is NO EXCUSE for taking someone's belongings, physically pushing a patron, cold food or rude service.... especially to a new patron!! First impressions last! read more

I've been here twice and both times I had really bad sushi. The fish is not fresh, not good quality, and tastes horrible. I even tried to play it safe with a mango avocado roll (very hard to mess up) and the mango was rotten and had a mold-like taste to it. Both times I went with my family and they got Asian noodles/pad Thai and hot dishes and they werre not happy either. Had a great time at Hachi in Middletown last weekend. I always look for good sushi places around CT, and this place was a new one to try. The atmosphere is casual, but don't let that put you off. My friend and I shared the Out of Control roll as an appetizer. A nice blend of several fresh sushi, we were very impressed. I also ordered a ginger salad and miso soup; both were excellent. For my entree I ordered the Tokyo Pearl roll, which was a blend of sea scallop tempura and bbq eel. Very tasty. I highly recommend Hachi for a reasonably priced sushi dinner. read more

We drove up from the shoreline due to the good reviews and it was worth the drive. It is a small intimate restaurant right on Main Street in Middletown. One note - though they do offer hibachi on the menu but there are no hibachi cook in front of you tables in the dining room - this was fine with us as we were there for the sushi but it's a good option if you are with non sushi eaters. Everything was incredibly fresh - possibly the freshest sushi we have experienced. The host Maggie informed us fish is flown in very two days. Our sushi was prepared with great care and it showed. We shared the omakase platter which was ample, also had the red snapper special sushi, miso soup, sticky ribs & gyoza and Michu for dessert. Everything was wonderful especially the sushi - service was friendly and attentive. Sake and beer was reasonably priced, my daughter loved that they had bubble tea and we felt the quality of the sushi was fantastic value. The steak was cooked perfectly per my request for medium, the teriyaki sauce is also perfect for me, it's very light and broth-like, savory and not too sweet -- seems like a housemade teriyaki sauce like my mom used to make, instead of those ready-made teriyaki types. I enjoyed the dressing they put on the side salad, very good but there was so little veggies in the small plate. I also tried their mango bubble tea and they accommodated to my request of no sugar. First time trying this new Japanese restaurant in Middletown, which is mainly sushi. My husband and I both enjoyed it. I had the Sake Sushi Dinner, which is salmon nigiri and spicy salmon maki. Nice presentation and very fresh. My husband had the fried rice with chicken which was very good. We also had the yakitori appetizer (chicken skewer). The only downside is the atmosphere. An open room. The heat was blowing from a vent but when the front door opened the cold air rushed in. Unfortunately, if you go here I think you should just stick to sushi. Yesterday I ordered takeout Thai red curry since our usual Thai place was closed. The curry itself was fine, but the chicken was extremely odd in texture, very stringy, soft, almost gummy. It seemed very low quality. The four of us stopped here on our visit back to my son's almer mater and to our surprise, our choice of Hachi exceeded our expectations. I have been here a few times for lunch. Went with friends tonight (Monday night) for dinner. They have lived in Japan so they have a much better grasp of what to expect at a restaurant. We started with poke and edamame and each was very good. We ordered sake and since it was buy one get the next at 50% off we thought there really was no choice but to get the two bottles. I had veggie udon which was the best I have had. My friend had seafood udon and he pronounced it good. Our dining partners has sushi special and the "sexy lady" roll (don't hurt the messenger!) both of which were enjoyed. We got a complimentary creme brûlée which was delicious. Tried the tuna bites and one of the specials; fresh sweet baby shrimp served three different ways - raw whole, raw cleaned, and tempura heads. WOW! This type of shrimp was totally new to me. I totally get why this place has earned an enviable 4.5 star average. It's hard to expect much when a "new" sushi restaurant opens up when it's formed from an old one that assumes new ownership. But something great is going on here. I honestly had some of the best sushi around at this austere little restaurant, hidden among the Neon signs and pomp that surrounds it. I don't think I've ever seen Ahi Tuna so beautifully dark red. Of course, it sat on our spread among another dozen or so kinds of sushi and sashimi, most of which were just excellent. Super fresh salmon, white tuna (escolar, my faaaave), Spanish mackerel, red snapper, sea bass... all served in pleasantly large chunks, making the $54 price tag well worth it. The only slight displeasure was the soup and salad. The Miso wasn't my favorite, and the salad was extremely small. Granted, they were free with our combo, and not intended as the star of the show, so it almost doesn't bear mentioning. When we were served our combo, the Sushiya (the dude who makes your sushi) gave us a tour of the sea, describing most pieces on the plate. He even identified his "personal favorite," which, while not as enjoyable as my beloved white tuna, was my second favorite indeed. Caring really is the first step. Since I constantly crave sushi and I had never been here, my husband and I decided to try it for lunch on a recent day off. Upon entering, we were greeted by two very friendly employees and then we were led to our table near the window. The restaurant is nicely decorated, but not so fancy that anyone would feel out of place visiting in jeans with wet hair (as I did). I ordered the 3 roll maki special with the eel cucumber (with no eel sauce), salmon avocado and yellowtail scallion. My husband ordered the sake set, which included salmon nigiri and salmon maki. Since the specials come with soup or salad, I got salad & he got soup. We were both very happy with the presentation and quality of the food. I. Love. This. Place. I've been here twice, and both times I am blown away by the quality of the food. I am very new to Asian cuisine, particularly Japanese, but holy moly I would eat here once a week if I could afford it. The pricing is actually not that bad at all for lunch, but as a post grad, I shouldn't eat out too much!! (Rent, bills, and school loans need to be paid!) Nevertheless, I crave this restaurant consistently, and try to go at least once a month. The two times I've gone, I've gotten the same thing, Chicken Teriyaki bento box with Almond bubble tea, so I am excited to check out and try the rest of the menu. I came here for lunch the first time today. While I will say there was a nice ambiance, I found my orders were over priced. I ordered hot sake which tasted like Gekkeikan, but was called something more expensive. I tried the tuna tartar, which is something I usually order at Japanese restaurants, and was somewhat disappointed. The tuna sat on top of mushy avocado and sat in a bowl of citrus juice which over powered the fresh taste of the tuna. I also ordered the king crab roll and a jumbo lobster roll. I didn't finish either; both had flavors so complex and combative- too much going on- that I politely asked them for it to go. For 2 $16 rolls, I expect true crab or lobster meat and taste. The hostess was very nice, however; it was not entirely a bad experience. I don't think I'll be going back, there are some alternatives a bit closer to home that I frequent. read more

After a long day on our feet, my friends and I decided to have dinner in my favorite place, Middletown! We all agreed on sushi and chose Hachi since it was new to us all. After looking over the menu for a while, I chose the Kani Salad which is basically cucumber, crab, masago and sauces. I was blown away by how well the flavors came together, it was just the right amount of spice and crunch - it was incredible. I also ordered a sushi roll, the Sweet Beast Roll. I knew it came with raw fish, but went with it anyways. It also comes with wasabi aioli which I requested to not have on my roll (bc who actually even likes anything wasabi????). The roll was just . It had just the right amount of sweet and spicy. I dipped a few of the pieces into spicy mayo (75 cents) which made it even better. I rarely finish all my food, but with my Kani Salad and Sweet Beast roll, I didn't leave a single piece. My friend ordered the shrimp pad thai and said he enjoyed it. My other friend ordered the edamame and California roll which she loooved! The workers are super friendly and the vibe of the restaurant was very relaxed and comfortable. My fiancee and I absolutely adore this place - so much so that he actually proposed to me over dinner here. I am from Boston and love trying new sushi restaurants when I travel. This place by far has the most creative rolls, fresh ingredients and best quality. This is such a gem. The staff are also very friendly. Maggie greets us with a warm welcome every time we come in. She also always remembers that I have a nut allergy and modifies the dishes appropriately to accommodate the allergy. This is so important, especially if your kids have an allergy. There are PLENTY of options for those not looking to try the raw fish. Our favorites: Sweet potato salad, rock shrimp tempura with wasabi aioli, out of control roll, wasabi roll, crispy spicy roll, maggie roll and asapargus and pumpkin tempura roll. Stopped here for a fast takeout meal while heading north after Christmas, and ordered the Hokkaido poke bowl and the simple sushi dinner. As soon as I opened the container while we drove away I remember thinking, "This is no simple sushi place." I was right. Most of the other reviews here don't really address this in their comments, so I don't know how to address their evaluations, but the fish in any case is exceptional, the sushi rice, the wasabi, the seaweed, the miso--there was so much attention to detail, O ended up feeling badly that I'd asked for take out as I savored each bite. I was looking for a place with happy hour on Friday. When I called they told me they did, and I was happy they did soy wraps, as my partner prefers them. When I got there they told me they didn't do happy hour on Fridays, but that was my only complaint. The sushi was amazing. The Out of Control and Amazing roll were delicious. Dined here last night and the food and service exceeded our expectations! My friends and I shared numerous special sushi rolls and they all tasted great! Each roll tasted very fresh, used high quality ingredients, and were bigger portions than expected. None of the rolls were drenched in overly sweet sauces (their special sauces are delicious!), which allowed us to truly taste what was inside each roll. The owner, Maggie, was very sweet; she checked in on us throughout the meal. She shared stories from her previous restaurant in NYC, and also gave us in-depth explanations of what we were eating while offering her recommendations for when we come back next time! I also overheard other patrons who were dining in raving about their delicious hibachi meals and Thai dishes...can't wait to try those next! They also serve bubble tea and Mochi (green tea and red bean here, yay!) for dessert. Heading all the way to here and found this Japanese restaurant surprisingly on the street. We were planning to speak Japanese to the owner but instead met a nice Chinese lady with her husband as the chef. It's quite interesting to have the chance to speak Chinese at such a small town... Back to the food, surely it would make many Asian travellers and students become nostalgic and enjoy a wonderful night with their peers, just as what the sushi and Unagi did to me and my family. The eel in Unagi was unlike any kind that we've tasted in China, but brought our taste buds back to the times in Japan. The freshness and the seasoning, it's what helps create the divine melt-in-the-mouth feel. That is, real authentic Japanese cuisine. I just hope that I could return to this place someday, hopefully I will still meet the couple again, with their hospitality, kindness, and meticulous attitude. read more
