Despite countless friends, particularly the foodies, raving about Gohan, my countless trips to the plaza for other reasons, and my love of sushi, I for some reason had never been until yesterday. The long anticipation and acclaim made for extremely high expectations, and I have to say they were met! It was pretty incredible sushi. Everyone there was super friendly and welcoming. The space is small, but tables are arranged nicely to maximize space as best they can. The servers were happy to give suggestions and asked what types of things I usually enjoyed. I had also been told by friends that the special rolls were a must. I over ordered to have leftovers, so I went with one of the special rolls my server recommended which was the sashimi roll, then the heaven roll, a yellowtail-scallion roll, and a sweet potato roll. Execution and technical skill was top tier. I was really impressed. Even the small details, knife cuts, ingredient ratios and proportions. Careful thought was clearly put into each roll. The special rolls were brilliantly conceived. The heaven roll was my favorite, and had avocado, and tempura shrimp and banana. Then the sashimi roll was rice-less, and had spicy crunchy yellowtail-tuna-salmon and mango inside, and then more raw tuna & salmon, avocado and thinly sliced lemon on top. It was served with a chili sauce intended for dipping. I was asked to try the special rolls as intended first. It was perfect as is! They have homemade soy sauce even, but I only used a little bit with the sweet potato and yellowtail rolls. Hardly needed. Excellent ginger and wasabi too, and plating was of course done with care as well. It was a great experience overall. Prices were great, especially for the quality. Very average even though nothing else about the experience was. If totally understand why Gohan is so beloved, and I am happy to report I now love it too. I anxiously look forward to trying more rolls!
Small, very modern establishment with excellent service! I stopped by for lunch and got the 2 roll lunch special with miso soup and a seaweed salad. Delicious and fresh! Highly recommend!
I've seen the accolades... Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in 2025. I've seen it all over IG. I had to try it of course. It's located in a plaza and it's a small, cozy spot; there were about 7 tables. I don't think they accept reservations. We went on Saturday for dinner, there were a group of about 15 to 20 and then my family. I was glad we were able to get a table for 4! The service was great! Food came out fast too. My kids had the chicken katsu with fries which they enjoyed. My husband had the sashimi platter and Philly roll, which he said was fresh and tasty. I ordered 3 sushi rolls: Dragon Roll- it had crispy tempura shrimp, avocado wrapped in sushi rice and nori seaweed; it was topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds. Shrimp Tempura Roll- which had Tempura Shrimp, Avocado, Cucumber, Tobiko, and Homemade Eel Sauce Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll- fresh minced tuna, seaweed, rice, and I believe popped rice to make it crunchy Honestly, all delicious. I couldn't find a negative. The sushi were fresh and innovative. The menu had so many delicious options that I wanted to try all of it in one sitting, if I was a rich sumo wrestler lol. Yes, it's worth the hype and I'll be back soon!

Glad we made a reservation because there are only maybe ten small tables and all were filled when we arrived on a Thursday evening. Food was all excellent. The best gyoza I've had and the homemade soy sauce was a nice kicker. Rolls we had were all excellent and we absolutely will be back.
I am obsessed. I see why it's a fan favorite and ranked on Yelp's Top 100 in the US. Gohan is now my #1 favorite for sushi. Like honestly in the entire country. It is on the smaller side because it's so unassuming in the middle of a strip mall. But the chefs are incredible with wonderful servers. The owner is the sweetest woman ever and she loves chatting with everyone coming in. Everything is made in house, even the soy sauce. The art and craft behind what is put on the menu is amazing. You should absolutely check them out!!!!!
Very good sushi, worth the trek. Came here because of the top 100 list entry. Plaza is very unassuming, in the middle of a shopping district. When we came, the restaurant was 15 minutes from closing. They take an hour for lunch every day, and shut down fully. They let us order to go though, so we put in our order rapidly and waited in the car. Food came out quickly, took some pics and dug in. The sushi was top notch, even if they were all to-go. The tuna was treated well, fresh and seasoned lightly. The wasabi was fresh and the ginger was punchy. The flaming torch roll was beefy and toasty, the dark angel roll was tangy, creamy and spicy. The only issue was the spicy tuna was a little mushy with little texture difference. We would've loved actually dining in and getting the full experience, but if this is the quality one gets when they are closing up just shows their commitment to their craft. It's really good sushi.
The sushi here lives up to its hype! The sushi rolls were fresh and creative. The service is good, seems like they have a lot of regulars and since it's such a small place, you'd get recognize quickly if you came a few times. There's only seating for about a max of 20 people or 5 separate tables, really small. They only serve nonalcoholic drinks and I think they are BYOB.
The sushi is good, but for the hype of top 100, no I don't think so. I had sushi at Genki and fengchop I thought it taste better. It's not horrible, but it's def not the best sushi I've eaten. The place is small and it's nice to support mom and pop shop. I also didn't know it's BYoB if I known that maybe it would have made my experience better. It was my birthday and I didn't know there's no alcohol there.
First off, to anyone that says "all sushi spots are the same" this place will prove you wrong. The standards for the quality of fish here are high and you can taste the difference. I mean just look how vibrant that salmon is. They're known for their sushi rolls and Paradise cake, Crazy Tuna roll and Tiger roll are only some of the rolls I've had but they were all amazing. The seamless blend of flavors, from the addition of citrus to their rolls to the unique sauces, you can tell a lot of care has been put into the design of each roll. I would come back just for the paradise cake though, insane blend of crunchy and soft textures. I'll admit I was a little doubtful because the same sounded gimmicky but boy was I wrong. Truly savored every bite and didn't want it to end . Service is amazing as always, super friendly and inviting. Having such a small seating area means the restaurant has kind of a homey feel, yet the food and presentation really takes you to flavor-town. Love the dichotomy of the beautifully arranged sushi and the Dragon Ball Z figurines around the restaurant. Honestly, Gohan placing in the Yelp top 20 for restaurants in the U.S. speaks for itself. If you're around the area, love sushi, and haven't gone here to eat yet, what are you doing?
This was our first time visiting Gohan, and from the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed by the warm and inviting atmosphere. Olivia truly made our experience exceptional--she was attentive, friendly, and incredibly helpful throughout our visit. The outstanding service was matched by the food, which was absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back and look forward to our next visit!
Where the true art of Japanese cuisine comes to life. This tiny gem of a restaurant creates a beautiful and balanced experience. Rachel is the owner or manager I am guessing. She is very passionate about the menu and is very attentive to everyone. Thankfully, as our food was served she was there to explain that the best way to experience the chef's creation is to eat it as it presented (without soy sauce) first. She went on to explain that each dish is created with specific textures and flavors in mind to create an intentional balanced bite. She is absolutely correct and I am so glad we listened. In fact, after trying the "second" bite with soy sauce, we recognized that it was much better without it. The soy sauce is homemade and delicious but the sushi is so perfectly executed, it really does not need anything at all to shine. This is not your average sushi joint. The food and service will blow you away. Get the Princess Peach Roll if it's available. The Tiger Roll and the Flame Touch were also fantastic. Hint: the tiger roll comes with lemon slices on top - do not remove the lemon. Trust me. read more

We've been hearing great things about Gohan Sushi for a while now, and I'm so happy we finally made the visit! We were lucky to snag a table for two and know to make reservations next time. The menu is primarily sushi, and I gravitated towards some of their unique speciality rolls, like the heaven roll with tempura banana and shrimp (which worked surprisingly well), and the flame touch roll with steak. The chicken katsu was delicious too! My husband loves Dragon Ball, so we loved seeing the references on the menu. Very attentive service from our waitress and the owner. We will be adding this into our rotation of go-to sushi spots! read more
Favorite: spicy salmon roll!!! Great lunch deal, would definitely come back. 2 rolls for 12.95, 3 rolls for 17.95. Chicken katsu was alright as is, coleslaw on the side or curry sauce would definitely add to it. Definitely need to Try: Paradise cake & Tiger roll next time. Service was great! Really great. I had been meaning to see what all the hype was about and decided on an impromptu team lunch one day at the office. Feedback all around was this was the best sushi ever. We tried a couple of specialty rolls including the Montage Mountain roll which has crispy rice and onions and a Flame Touch roll which had steak. Absolutely delicious. The sushi lunch and sashimi were also on the table to rave reviews. Service was so friendly and this restaurant is in such an unassuming strip mall. Love hidden gems. Gohan came highly recommended by many of my foodie friends. Since I'm a big fan of sushi, I had to check them out for myself. They are located in a shopping plaza with other food options and stores, Gohan can be easily missed--a gem hidden in plain sight, if you will. We were instantly greeted when we walked in and seated. The restaurant was rather small with a few sets of tables and very clean. Our server was very friendly and had a contagious smile. She cracked a few jokes that had us all laughing as we ordered. The menu was simple compared to other sushi restaurants which I liked. Since we arrived during lunch hours (Tues-Sat 11am-3pm), some of us took advantage of the lunch menu that had some great deals. I personal got the Snow White Roll listed on their Chef's Signature Rolls. My husband who isn't a fan of sushi got a Steak Fried Rice lunch that came with salad. The rest of the table got 3 roll lunch; Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, Paradise Cake Roll, and Spicy Salmon Bowl. Our dishes were prepared swiftly and arrived at the same time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I really enjoyed my Snow White Roll with its many layers of flavors. It was a little sweet and a little spicy, the perfect balance. It has coconut shrimp, spicy tuna, mango, and topped with seared chili white tuna, avocado, jalapeño, and flakes of coconut. It was delicious! I also tried the Paradise Cake Roll (another Chef's Signature Roll), that was uniquely layered with spicy salmon, regular salmon, avocado, eel, marinated Ikura, and citrus mayo. The flavors melted together and loved that neither of the ingredients over powered one another. The Signature Rolls are definitely where I think Gohan shines, I wish I could had tried more. We left very full and satisfied. We grabbed one of Gohan's takeout menus for another time. This was a great sushi treat and is worth all the hype. Gohan is very deserving of 5-Stars! read more
Recently found this hidden gem Gohan Japanese Cuisine located in Southington, CT. I can't say enough about this place, I truly had a great experience, & I will be back again. The establishment is super cute. The space isn't huge but it has a few tables available. The staff was super friendly and continued to check in on us, which showed just how great the customer service was. I love finding a great lunch deal & their prices on the daily are reasonable already so I could not complain! Started off with the salad and miso soup, tasted as expected but all served in a timely manner prior to the appetizers! We then received the Titan sushi appetizer which was truly astonishing in looks as well as the taste. It was shrimp tempura wrapped in tuna, mango, avocado, topped with jalapeno, coconut flakes, cranberry, & thinly sliced lime served with a homemade balsamic vinegar. I can say it also did not feel heavy at all!!!!! Normally some specialty rolls tend to be overpowered with rice but with this, everything was the right ratio, & I truly enjoyed it. The other appetizer we had were the Thai spicy wings, which were yummy. The wings did not taste dry and were super moist, came right off the BONE.... Seriously enjoyed these so much, I will order them any time I visit moving forward. The 3 sushi roll lunch option was great. All 3 rolls were light and had good flavor to them. I normally order the chicken katsu when I go to places that have it so I can try the different cooking styles. I thought this one tasted good & I liked the light stickiness to the rice. read more

Stopped in after floating on the river. Hands down the best decision. Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Friendly staff, very clean, and charming atmosphere. I got the flame touch, and it didn't disappoint. Never would I think that prime rib and beef go well together - but I was wrong. I'll definitely be driving the hour back again. read more
It is always fun to see how pleasantly surprised new customers are when they visit Gohan in their Strip mall location. Some walk-in thinking it may be lower quality but they always leave very impressed. Gohan truly does have the greatest fresh and perfectly chilled sushi in Connecticut. The owner is a creative genius who is both innovative and friendly. Parking is easily accessible in the large lot right in front of the restaurant. This place has been all over my feed and I couldn't wait to try it. I was surprised by the low key dining room and didn't expect the amazing food we would be served! Everything was fresh and flavorful. We had the gyoza. So good! I ordered the Snow White roll. It was a surprising flavor combo I have not had but definitely enjoyed. How does a nondescript sushi place in a strip mall in Southington have universal five stars on Yelp? Because it just might be the best sushi restaurant in Connecticut. Just putting it out there because while I was excited to try this place based on my friends' reviews I wasnt prepared for how much it lived up to their hype. First off: shoutout to the owners. Just the nicest in the world. You can't help but root for them. But then the rolls. Just magnificent perfection. We had the Tiger Roll while had the thinnest slice of lemon on top. Why? As the owner explained: because citrus goes great with seafood. And she was right. It IS great. As good as that was, the montage mountain might be even more creative with crispy sushi rice topped with spicy tuna, avocado, eel, spicy crab and crispy onion. And then we had the sashimi roll (no rice). So good. What was amazing about them is that none of them needed any soy sauce. They were just great on their own. I'm so glad I listened to Yelpers like Jen, Jason and so many others who knew the secret before I did. Don't make the mistake of waiting. Gems like this place deserve to be discovered. read more

Visiting Farmington for my husband's work trip and googled sushi places near me. If you're looking for a completely different place, GO THERE! From the moment we walked in until we left was an amazing experience! The waitress is super sweet and explains their different types of rolls like a pro! We got the Christmas, Dark Angel, Paradise Cake, and Flame Torch rolls. I'm normally a soy sauce dipper but she recommended to not dip the first bite you take and I never dipped a piece! read more

Family owned business. Husband and wife. What a gem Of a place off Queen St in Southington. It's a small cute restaurant. 5 -6 tables. Owners are so friendly and while my friend and we're there we loved seeing customers come in that were regulars. Owners new them by their name ! Menu has different variety of specialty sushi rolls that are Chefs creations. Unique rolls for sure. Presentation is very nice. They do have Gluten-free soy sauce for my GF friends out there. I tried Spring Breeze Roll, Peanut Avocado, and Rainbow Roll. My friend tried Flame Touch which was one of the unique rolls with steak on it , Tiger Roll and Paradise Cake. All delicious and different. They do have Lunch Specials and Bowls. Ohh.. it's also BYOB! If you forget .. there's a 2 liquor stores near distance you can run and get some before you get settled. You will get a nice chilled glass for your drink! We will go back! We enjoyed the food and our visit! read more
Let me introduce you to the Yelpie food chain. I learned about Gohan through Fellow Yelper Jason P who learned about it through Yelper Christina M. Since then we've seen more and more of our fellow friends in the community try Gohan and love it. I consistently am thinking about their sushi and when I can make the trip over to get it next. Every time I've been here I'm absolutely not disappointed. Between friendly staff who care and remember their customers to of course the great sushi. High quality always and uniquely made. My favorite is the sashimi roll which I've gotten every time. There's a special sauce made that pairs perfectly with the roll to dip instead of soy sauce. I also love the paradise cake because of all the different flavors and fishes packed in the roll. Tiger roll is light and citrusy with one of my favorite fish, salmon. I haven't had a bad choice yet! Other chef signature rolls I really enjoyed include the flame touch as the buttery ribeye steak is put atop the fishes in the roll. The montage mountain is a nice crunch and a more cooked roll than the rest. The toro lovers roll is a tuna fan's dream. The team at Gohan actually remember what I've ordered before and know what my tastes are. I'm gonna try this whole menu one day because I'm that confident everything is good. In her Yelp review, my friend Christina M, encouraged people to "run, don't walk" to 5 Star Yelp-rated Gohan Sushi. I am guilty of not running to Gohan after seeing Christina's review. Moreover, I walked very slowly, and my path was circuitous. It was my loss. Gohan is terrific. Although Gohan has a small, unassuming dining area (maybe 6 or so tables), the amazing service makes you feel like you're in a friend's home. Our server (who I think may have been an owner) remembered every group who had ever been there before and greeted them enthusiastically. One group drove from Massachusetts. Another from Simsbury. Just to visit Gohan. Can you imagine all the closer sushi options they passed over? Our server took time to understand what we like and then tailored recommendations to our tastes. This led to my wife and I splitting three specialty rolls and a Spicy Tuna with avocado roll, and our family also shared a shrimp app, spring rolls and a Salad with carrot dressing. I often think the specialty rolls at most CT places are fairly similar. That is not the case at Gohan. Our tiger roll was filled with spicy salmon, mango and avocado, and topped with Aburi Salmon and edible sweetened lemon pieces. Beautiful and delicious. The Flame Touch Roll was filled with spicy crunchy tuna and tempura asparagus, and topped with flame torched steak, jalapeño and red onion. Surf and turf in a roll. It looked and tasted like nothing else I've ever seen. Delicious. The other rolls were very good too. The rolls bursted with colors, tastes and shapes. Awesome work. The Apps and Salad were also good. The salad vegetables tasted very fresh and the carrot dressing was a step or two up from most. The spring rolls had good flavor and texture and the sweet dipping sauce was delicious. Gohan Sushi is one of my fav CT Food Discoveries in recent years. I don't know if I will be any more impactful than Christina, but do yourself a favor -- Run, Don't Walk . . . to Gohan Sushi. And if you do walk, go in a straight line, at Olympic Walker speed. This might just be my new favorite sushi spot.. I was craving sushi Thursday night and decided to go on Yelp and try a random place I've never been to before. I stumbled upon Gohan and decided to give it a try simply based on the photos of the interior being aesthetic, modern, and clean. I went in a group of 4 and we sat at the table against the wall displaying the cute Pokemon cans of soda. We actually didn't even notice at first, but our server pointed it out. The staff was attentive and humorous and gave great suggestions for what we should order. The tako su was refreshing, and with its perfect chew and citrusy flavor, I would consider delightful. The Montage Mountain special roll is probably one of the best rolls I've ever eaten. The crispy rice was hot and paired well with the raw fish flavor- and texture-wise. I tried some of my friends' orders too and I was also amazed by the Tiger Roll. I will definitely be coming back to try more. read more

I concur with all of the glowing reviews for Gohan!! Their food is expertly prepared, and it is full of flavor. We stopped in and ordered 3 rolls for takeout. We enjoyed chatting with the woman who took our order while the chefs prepared our food. She described the flavors in some of their best selling menu items, and helped us make our selections. We settled on the layer cake roll, the flame torched roll, and the spicy crunchy yellowtail roll. They were incredibly fresh and delicious. All were full of flavor, yet mild - in a good way! Each roll was visually appealing as well. The food was on par with high end sushi that l've had and the prices were good. Now that we've finally tried Gohan, I anticipate it being our new regular sushi spot. There's a lot on the menu, and I can't wait to try it!! Another reason I want to return is for the friendly service. 5 stars!!! read more
