8. Alaskan Roll
Margarita S.

I love this place! Sushi has always been great each time I've come here for take out so decided to dine inside. Ambience was great, came here with my baby and they seated us in our own private room. I loved the hibachi here. Usually hibachi is hit or miss because a lot of places add too much soy sauce. This place had such flavorful hibachi and GIANT portions, enough for two meals. I loved the salmon so much in the seafood combo hibachi, didn't taste fishy or anything. Will come back for the exactly same meal: one roll and a hibachi.

California Rolls, California rolls with sauces and crispy salmon skin, spicy crab rolls and an Alaskan roll.

We were recommended Japanica II by a family member and were quite concerned when we arrived. The exterior of the building makes it seem like the restaurant went out of business and was now a base for criminal operations. If you are brave enough to go through the door however, it looks just like most other Japanese restaurants. Slightly outdated with low lighting. I enjoyed the vibe. Though we were one of only 3 tables the service was not very fast. We ordered 7 rolls so the sushi chef understandably took some time to make them but they still sat for several minutes complete before the waitress grabbed them. I found the sushi to be very good and satisfying. It was inexpensive as well. We did find one bone or shell in a piece but I'm sure that happens occasionally. I would go back as the sushi was above average, but as Japanese restaurants go Japanica II is good, not special.

We've been to Japanica II a few times now, and it's always a great experience! The owners are super friendly. Prices are reasonable. We've order maybe 8-10 different rolls since we started visiting. One of my favorite rolls is the spicy scallop roll. They have great quality fish, and everything tastes delicious and fresh. They're great about modifications and also have gluten free soy sauce. We'll definitely continue to visit this restaurant!

Vegetable Fried Udon

Big City Roll is my new favorite Roll. I enjoyed the Green Tea especially on a rainy day. Reminder its unsweetened, I personally enjoyed it cause it left more room in my stomach. Udon noodles are very filling, vegetables are crisp and add more flavor. Vegetable gyoza was AMAZING especially with the vinegar sauce. The service is amazing!! They're very polite and give you enough time to gather your thoughts. They also have good recommendations so if you need any help with your tastebuds, do not be afraid to ask! The Ambiance is beautiful! I love the private rooms. I enjoy the lighting and the area where you can watch Itamae prepare your sushi. Next, I would love to try the bento box... I love Edamame, but next time that will be an appetizer.

Monkey Roll with White Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, and Eel Nigiri

[Grade: A] [Worth it ($)?: 9/10, pretty good for what it is] As a newcomer to Connecticut, I've been looking around to see if there's any place that has some good reviews as a baseline. I'm usually pretty picky, especially when it comes to sushi, but I was pleasantly surprised when I came here. Overall, I'd say they had a great quality of fresh fish and ingredients. The roll I got had a great crunch w the shrimp tempura, and they had a layer of spicy tuna on top of the roll covered by another layer of sliced avocado. I usually don't see this technique, but I think it's a great way to make a roll. Also, their nigiri was excellent too in taste and technique, and I liked that they put a small dab of wasabi like more traditional places. For the most part, I really enjoyed my sushi experience. Although it's not anything crazy, it's not trying to be, but it does great at what it is trying to be and that is great sushi at a great price! I'll definitely consider this as my main sushi spot in Middletown!

Dr Christina Roll and American Dream Roll

Surprisingly awesome Japanese on a crowded commercial road. The restaurant is offset in a plaza and sort of hard to find, but keep going toward the back! Menu includes the usual Japanese food goodies and a surprisingly long list of rolls. I liked the two I got; they had a lot of flavor without being inundated with sauces that can drown out the stars of the rolls, the fish! Pleasant decor and ambiance.

Shrimp tempura Samson roll was great, crispy salmon roll was mediocre. Fast service, which I appreciate

The food was very bland nothing had any flavor Service was terrible the staff acted like customers weren't even there I walked in and they did not pay attention to me for several minutes walking by me not even acknowledging me which coincides with the food they don't care about their customers are the way the food tastes

Good quality ingredients and very nicely presented. Delicious sushi. Only issue I have is the soy sauce is extra salty for some reason.

The staff and chefs are compassionate, friendly, and accommodating, and I find myself bringing all my family and friends to the restaurant whenever they visit. We came on a Friday evening and it was full but they were able to find us a table quickly. Inside, the place has a very casual feel and I honestly wasn't sure what we were going to get when we ordered. Just to say, looks were deceiving, but in a good way! The food was at a different (better) level than the ambience in the room. Basically, don't worry about how the place looks - you will love the food. Our waitress was sooo nice and friendly. We got our drinks quickly and ordered right away. Though we came for sushi, we were all mesmerized by the entree options and opted to try the bento boxes. I'm used to small bento boxes with tightly portioned foods and the "basics." What we got surprised us all. These bento boxes were actually huge plates of food. A full order of vegetable tempura, a whole California roll, entree, soup and gyoza. We barely made it through a quarter of it! And it was delicious! I got the chicken teriyaki and the chicken was so tender. The tempura was fried perfectly and the gyoza had a great flavor. All in all, I recommend you try this place out! Is it a fancy date night place? No. Is it a super casual date night place? Yes! Try the bento - you won't be disappointed! 4/5 stars only because they should spruce up the inside to match their amazing food!

The first thing I noticed was that clean restaurant smell; everything felt very well maintained, peaceful, and welcoming. As soon as you walk in and head downstairs, there's always someone ready to greet and help you. Customer service has consistently been friendly and attentive every time I've visited. This is the type of place you can take your parents, go on a first date, enjoy a family dinner, or even come alone with headphones and still feel comfortable. One thing I really appreciate is how quiet and intimate it feels inside. It's one of the few restaurants where you can actually hear your conversation without yelling across the table. I ordered takeout this visit because I was shopping nearby, but I've dined in before and would definitely come back to sit down and fully enjoy the atmosphere and authentic cuisine. This time I ordered the Thai pineapple fried rice with shrimp. The flavor was savory with a subtle sweetness from the pineapple, and it included peas, carrots, eggs, and small seeds throughout that added texture. The shrimp were medium sized, and my small to-go portion came with four pieces. The dish was delicious, but next time I'd probably order extra shrimp. They also have a large variety of menu options including sushi, hibachi, vegetarian dishes, and specialty drinks. I especially love that they offer Japanese sodas and Tuesday drink specials Parking is convenient too. There's a public paid parking lot directly across from the restaurant. Definitely a relaxing and reliable spot when you want good food and a calm atmosphere. Already craving another visit

The shrimp was excellent in the tempura and the vegetables [eggplant, yam and broccoli]. I don't think broccoli does well in tempura as it is too moist a vegetable. All in all, however, this is a filling and relatively inexpensive meal. Service was pleasant and well executed. It was a terribly hot day outside and the AC was not as cool as we had hoped. The restaurant has a cozy, peaceful atmosphere that immediately makes you feel comfortable. Around lunchtime there were only a couple of tables occupied, so it was quiet enough to relax and actually enjoy a conversation. The lighting was a little dim, which added to the cozy vibe. The woman helping us was incredibly friendly and provided excellent customer service from the moment we walked in. I ordered chicken soup dumplings, chicken broth ramen, Vietnamese beef pho, a passion fruit green tea with bubbles, and a coconut bubble milk tea. Everything was delicious, and honestly, I would order every single item again. The chicken soup dumplings were my favorite surprise. They were incredibly juicy. On my first bite, some of the broth squirted right out because I wasn't expecting that much flavor packed inside. Paired with the soy sauce and chili sauce, they were absolutely amazing. The chicken broth ramen was rich, comforting, and full of authentic flavor. It was so good that I ordered another bowl to take home for later. The Vietnamese beef pho was equally satisfying, with a flavorful broth that tasted like it had been simmering for hours. Both bubble teas were well-balanced and not overly sweet. The passion fruit green tea was especially refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. The portions were generous, the flavors tasted authentic, and the overall experience reminded me why supporting local restaurants is so much better than grabbing fast food. You can taste the difference in the quality and care that goes into the food. I already know I'll be back. Next time, I have my eye on the steamed buns. To make matters worse, the food was awful. I ordered the "tomato beef noodle soup," and it was a complete disaster. Definitely one of the worst dining experiences I've had.
