Fail! First of all, the food was great. But the wait was so terrible. We ordered online through the restaurant's website that gave a reasonable time the order would be ready. Ok cool... 1 hour and 10 minutes after the pick-up time (standing in the restaurant still) the food finally was ready for pick up. A line of other patrons there to pick up their orders were screaming furious, planning a humorous hostile take-over of the take out counter. And all of this standing around in-restaurant dining maskless patrons. We overheard one employee say to a patron "oh we canceled all the Door Dash orders tonight," and apparently they never notified the patrons. I mean, WTF! I can only guess I was lucky because I ordered direct from the restaurant's website. It is very disappointing the management of this restaurant was so in shambles tonight. I hate bashing a local eatery during the hard-to-survive-times-of-the-pandemic, but they were apparently just so overwhelmed with business they just couldn't perform--reasonably. But the food was great. It will be a long time before I'd give this place another try, and I'll just have to clear my schedule to do so. read more

I loved Anoho, and Hachi is not a suitable replacement. I went in to order takeout and the woman who took my order was pleasant. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll and hibachi fried rice (very sad that they don't have hibachi noodles as other sushi restaurants do). Food was prepared relatively quickly, 10 - 15 minutes. However, when I got home, I was seriously disappointed. Raw tuna is red. It is not grey, beige, orange, green, or light purple. I'm not sure what was in that tuna roll but it didn't taste like tuna. It didn't look like tuna, looked more like a multi-colored hodge podge of slop. It honestly didn't even look safe to eat!! Hibachi rice was flavorless and dry. Shrimp tempura roll was not made well, and fell apart when I tried to eat it. I had to use my hands instead of chopsticks and actually hold it together. That doesn't happen when I get a shrimp tempura roll anywhere else. However the actual shrimp was well cooked, crispy, and the shell had been removed. Not enough to warrant more than one star, but I do give credit where credit is due. Anoho had far better and fresher sushi, and also had noodles. Losing Anoho was a huge loss and Hachi is not an adequate replacement for me. Middletown really needs a GOOD sushi restaurant to come to town so that I can get my sushi fix. I'd like to start this review off differently by first talking about the service at Hachi because it takes a front seat in our overall experience. It was, in short, exceptional. Honestly, they were some of the most genuinely friendly wait staff that I have ever interacted with. Our waitress greeted us with an especially warm smile, was lovely in every way that she interacted with us, and was just so attentive and sweet. She alone made a lasting impression of Hachi and I think that says a lot. The food arrived quickly, the staple ginger salad appetizer is a go to for me in any Japanese restaurant, and their ginger dressing was unusually creamy. It was not necessarily bad, but not what I expected based on most other Japanese restaurants that I've been to. We ordered a hibachi meal, and I typically see a clear onion soup come with that, but here they do miso. Miso isn't bad I just personally prefer clear onion, I find it more flavorful and I'm not a huge fan of tofu. One thing I definitely did not prefer was the hibachi noodles. They were unusually thin, and not in the typical brown soy based sauce I'm used to seeing them cooked in. These were instead in a semi-salty, semi-sweet oil it seemed? I might be accustomed to getting a more Americanized style of hibachi so take my opinion as you wish. They weren't my personal favorite, that's for sure. Our sushi however was perfectly rolled, portioned, and presented. One of us got a shrimp tempura roll and another a cucumber avocado roll, they were both fresh and delicious. We need to thank Yelp for leading us here. We saw some excellent reviews and we skeptical. But they were right -so many if the reviews were right. This is possibly the best sushi in Connecticut. Thia is an unassuming restaurant in downtown Middletown. We were impressed with the expansive menu including daily specials and unique rolls and appetizers. Our first indicator that we were in a great place were the tuna bites. They were beautifully presented, a nice spice and crusted with candied pistachios. Each of our rolls were excellent and generous. A shared grilled asparagus side dish was excellent with a unique mustard miso sauce. I can't wait to return. read more

Unfortunately, our regular favorite's lunch prices went up by a few dollars in the recent past so we decided to give Hachi a try. I'm glad we did! Sushi was fresh, order was correct, rolls were good. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the side ginger salad. It was mostly white iceberg lettuce and one piece of tomato and one cucumber. I order Hachi all the time, but this time they really behaved badly. I have a final this afternoon so I thought I'd order take out, I chose Hachi cause it's always a good place. But it disappointed me. I waited till the estimated time, nothing arrived. So I called the restaurant and the owner said it's because the Grubhub driver did not arrive. She did not even feel sorry for making me wait over time. I wait another 30-40 minutes. The driver arrived and when I asked him, he said it's the owner who forgot about the order. So Hachi, please. We got an order of gyoza to start which was so good (had like a smoked flavor to it which I loved), then we got 2 special rolls (the out of control roll and the Maggie roll) and 2 orders of hibachi fried rice. I loved both rolls! My boyfriend doesn't really like the raw stuff and doesn't eat sushi very often so he was all about the Maggie roll which is a deep fried roll. He loved it! The side orders of fried rice were huge and delicious. We ate too quick to take any pictures unfortunately. Only disappointing thing is they only have beer and wine- I had some hot sake (which didn't come out really hot) but really wanted a nice cocktail which they do not offer. I used to eat at Hachi regularly when I worked in Middletown, but I still find myself making the drive out of the way when I want sushi, because I firmly believe this is the best sushi in Central Connecticut. The lunch options are endless, from maki sets to hibachi and teriyaki bento boxes. The special rolls are out of this world. My go-to's are their Out of Control Roll, Splendid Roll, and Cherry Blossom Roll. Their regular rolls are also fantastic. Note that they do not make hibachi in front of you at the restaurant if that is what you are expecting, but their hibachi is still very good! It is not overly doused in sauce and salty like other hibachis I've been to. The hibachi steak is always cooked tender and the complimentary miso soup that I choose to accompany my meals (other option is ginger dressing salad) is always perfect. The owner, Maggie, is a sweetheart. She said she and her husband used to work in restaurants in New York before opening Hachi, and their fish is flown in right from Japan. I've eaten here so many times and they have never once disappointed! read more

We've had some good fish here, and will be coming back again! My only complaint would be is their rice sometimes isn't up to par--probably because it sits too long at the wrong temperature before it gets put into their rolls and nigiri sushi, so they fall apart. My recommendation is to order sashimi for takeout, and cook your own rice at home to go with it. I admit I am spoiled--I have a nice Zojirushi rice cooker and a vast pile of Tamaki Gold rice, the standard for good Japanese restaurants world-wide. I was a bit surprised, based on the kind of dreary exterior, that we'd have a really nice meal here. Four of us met up for dinner on Friday. A few other tables were taken, but not too busy yet. I just had water but one of my friends was excited they had bubble tea and was very happy with her thai iced tea flavored bubble tea. We ordered two appetizers - pork gyoza and some rock shrimp which were smaller than the usual tempura kind. I wasn't super impressed with the rock shrimp (they needed more flavor) but the gyoza were very good. For dinner, 3 of us ordered some sushi and our waitress didn't write them down, but remembered everything! We were impressed.My fiance had wanted fatty tuna or salmon sashimi which they were out of, but the waitress recommended something similar and he ended up enjoying it, too. The sashimi came out in a pretty ice bowl. I ended up ordering too much, but it was good. The most interesting roll I got had mango and coconut - good, but I wish I had gotten more savory rolls. They had soft shell crab which I don't see often and it was also good. My other friend had drunken noodles which she pretty much inhaled and said were delicious. Came here for dinner with a friend at around 7 pm on a Wednesday night. There's ample street parking outside as this restaurant is located right in downtown Middletown. The restaurant is relatively small but still very clean and well decorated. The entire atmosphere had a great feel to it. We were seated promptly as the restaurant wasn't busy at this time. We had a little trouble understanding our waitress due to her accent as she was explaining the specials to us but she was still very friendly and smiled the whole time. My friend and I ordered 4 rolls to share amongst us: out of control, sweet beast, dynamite spider and sweet potato roll. Our order took about 15 min to come which is a reasonable time for the sushi chefs to make the special rolls with all the detail that they put in, including the presentation and display! We were also pleasantly surprised because everything was delicious! My favorite was the out of control and surprisingly, the sweet potato! All of the rolls had a myriad of different flavors and levels of flavors so it was a very enjoyable experience. The tempura in the rolls were all fried to a nice crisp without being overly oily and still remained crispy even after rolled in the sushi. The dynamite spider was not as spicy as I was expecting but it was still very delicious. The waitstaff and the owner came by our table a few times to make sure that we enjoyed our meal and that we had enough water. They also had a great dessert menu but I was too full to try any of the desserts. Our total meal cost under $50 (not including tip) for the 4 rolls and they even gave us a voucher card for 8% off our next meal. This is my new favorite sushi spot in Connecticut and I am definitely a picky sushi fanatic whose tried numerous places in NYC. I know it seems uncanny to praise a pork dish of all things at a sushi place but you really really have to try their sticky ribs. I, too, was skeptical, but BE-LIEVE ME. These ribs will be the most tender, fall-off-the-bone, delicious things you put in your mouth! I also really appreciated that these were lightly fried and had somewhat of a "crust" before being lathered with their secret sauce. MM-MM-MM. Aside from their sticky ribs, Hachi also serves some fantastic sushi. This time around we went with the oysters, scallop sashimi, fatty tuna sashimi and the 28piece sashimi platter. Everything was extremely fresh. I liked the fatty tuna the most in particular. The marbling on it was pristine. Eating it only confirmed that what I was seeing wasn't a trick of the eye or great lighting. Our sashimi platter was a grand sight to behold as well and had a ton of variety. If you're ever looking for a great sushi date spot, Hachi would be at the top of my list. The chefs go to great lengths to present dishes that are just as pleasant to look at as they are to eat. Since it was cold out, we also tried their shrimp tempura udon. The broth was clean and delicate and the udon perfectly al dente. The bowl was topped with shitake, naruto, and spinach. They ended up grilling our shrimp instead of tempura-ing it, but they remedied the situation by offering a side of freshly fried tempura. At this point I can say that Hachi serves my favorite sushi in Middletown. I tried multiple rolls when I went for dinner. Highlights were the Manhattan Monkey (with pistachios and avocado) and the Out of Control Roll (with a crunchy exterior and multiple kinds of fish). Both were very fresh, had some great flavor combinations, and were beautifully presented. They also had a special where if you bought one beer, the second was half off. Though nestled among so many other Japanese restaurants in the Middletown area, Hachi 8 is truly one of the best and most unique. For one, this establishment offers a wider selection of fish than any of its competitors and a fresh selection at that. Maggie (our hostess) informed us that the fish were shipped in from Japan and that explained the rotating selection and why the fatty tuna was not available at the time. Secondly, the presentation is simply on point. As can be seen from the photos, the live scallop ceviche dish is a perfect example. Bright and vibrant, the scallops not only looked fresh but tasted fresh as well. The light yuzu vinaigrette that was paired with the rich scallops served to bring everything together. The uni was another standout dish as well-complementing the scallop perfectly. We also got a lobster roll and hibachi dish along with an amazing dessert consisting of a special Creme Brulee served with mango ice cream. Everything oozed perfection and presentation. My only complaint here would be that the vegetable and rice were a little greasy for the hibachi. But this is dwarfed by all the other achievements. I could go on and on about this place. The special rolls are very creative and come out tasting very interesting. We got the mango roll and it was sickeningly Sweet to me, it tasted like candy. Shrimp tempura topped with mango and drizzled in mango sauce. My boyfriend liked it but it was wayyyyy too sweet for me. We also tried the Sweet beast roll which was drizzled in wasabi aioli and was spicy and crunchy and was very good.
