Lobster Roll & Fries
Harrison I.

H.J. Blakes is a small truck on the side of the road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Yet, they had one of the freshest lobster rolls I've ever had. The added butter to pour over the top was delicious, the mayo sauce had a hint of lemon and really enhanced the lobster roll. Yet, they really let the lobster meat shine and kept the dish relatively simple. I'd highly recommended for a quick bite to eat! They had plenty of outdoor seating, though you can also totally eat in your car.

Hidden Gem Alert! If you're ever in Belgrade, do yourself a favor and stop at HJ Blake's - this place is the definition of a hidden gem. I have never had a single bad thing from here (and trust me, I've tested the menu plenty!). The burgers? Absolute perfection every time - juicy, flavorful, and cooked exactly how I like them. The lobster roll? 100% worth every penny - fresh, buttery, and packed with lobster the way it should be. And the haddock sandwich? Forget everything you thought you knew about haddock sandwiches - this one sets a whole new standard. On top of the food, the vibe is just as good - the staff are always so kind, fast, and welcoming. You feel like you're in on a secret every time you eat here. Bottom line: whether you're local or just passing through, HJ Blake's is the kind of spot you'll dream about long after your plate is empty.

Garden salad. Very Fresh and with blue cheese on it!

Took a pic of the cod sandwich my uncle likes. Just adding onto my other reviews I have.

Don't skimp on the meat! Solid place. Everything they had was great. Just cause it's a shack on the side of the road doesn't mean it's poor quality. Place even makes their own desserts.

The holly grail! So delicious!

They have the option for ordering takeout Ahead of time or online. There is significant outdoor seatting as well as a small interior dining room. The interior has one non gender handicap, accessible bathroom. The menu is not excessive, but the portions are generous. CAUTION: pay close attention to the prices. they will fluctuate and you should not assume what the final cost of your meal will be beforehand!! My clam basket and my daughter's 1/4lb roll (2 20 Oz drinks) totaled $65!! Now I will absolutely give credit to them for the clam portion being large and high quality. These were the type of onion rings that I prefer, which are thinner and more crunchy with less batter. That said, the total completely blew my mind.Because even with a very industry standard upcharge for onion rings in place of french fries.I had sticker shock. I grew up near Portland so I understand the price of seafood can change quickly. But I would say do some price shopping. Because this is more about the experience of the location since the quality of food does exist at other restaurants. In maine.

I am not sure it is fair to say service was slow since it was late/the holiday weekend factor, but do note there was only one server in the space. Lots of love to them for squeezing us in. I liked that the space felt like someone's home. It was quite intimate. The menu was very unique and offered a lot of fusion feeling items. I am not sure if it was just the circumstance, but the food fell a bit flat for us. My best friend ordered the burger and it was pretty burnt. I got a sort of scallop curry that came with bread. The curry was lovely, but would've been really great with rice. I ended up using the bread making it a bit of a bread curry. Would be interested to try other things on the menu.

Have returned twice since then. As the menu is small and hasn't changed since my first visit, the charm has worn off. I usually share the roast half chicken plus 2-3 sides. The meal was absolutely flavorful on my first visit but not so much the last visit in Dec 2025. Maybe it was a bad night? I thought the flavors fell flat and service was not as attentive. I was celebrating the holidays by treating friends to dinner and had to wave down someone twice to order rounds of drinks. I will give any establishment 20 stars if they are paying attention as to whether your glass is half empty. For me, the food can be excellent or blah but excellent service can make or break a restaurant.

As someone afflicted with Celiac, finding good gluten-free fried seafood is SUCH a rarity. Everything we ordered was phenomenal. The batter wasn't too heavy or greasy, had a great flavor and was super crisp, and left you feeling full but not stuffed. The owner also brought out fried pickles, onion rings, and clam chowder (all gf!!) for me to try, which I haven't had since being diagnosed, which was so incredibly thoughtful and generous Highly recommend: popcorn shrimp, chicken tenders, blueberry slaw, fried pickles, onion rings, and clam chowder. My husband said his lobster roll and seaweed salad were top notch. The seaweed salad is not gluten free, but you can request a gf bun for the lobster rolls! The side sauces were also super tasty If you're Celiac, gluten-free, or just looking to eat fried food that's done right, Shannon's Unshelled is worth the detour every time. I'll be dreaming about this place for a long time!

It's literally a food truck on the side of the road, but she has cute little picnic tables and her restaurant is set up to truly reflect Lobster week. We ordered a lobster roll to share, and she included some fried lobster and her lobster bisque to accompany it. She halved it for us as we were sharing, and it's a good thing we did because it was a huge portion. Mine had a cute little Marigold on top and his featured a little orchid. How did she know they were both so reflective of who we are?! Oh my goodness I almost forgot, we had blueberry coleslaw... Have you ever had blueberry coleslaw? It was like dessert in a cup, but it was a side dish. Truly phenomenal! We are headed from Bar Harbor back to Portland on Friday and plan on stopping at Shannon's on our way.
