I first found Giacomo's when I moved from Jersey to the Lehigh Valley more than 20 years ago. Long…read morebefore the sons of the original owner opened the Market and Grill in College Hill. Raised in Brooklyn, NY for 20 years, my expectations were low. The old man closed his store and retired and I discovered the tradition moved forward in the new College Hill store. The original Giacomo's was not a grill, but the old man (whose name escapes me), knew how to make sausage. Imported cheeses and olives with bread brought in from NYC made this a no brainer for folks like me. The old man couldn't retire and he came in just to make the sausage - of which the thin (pictured) parsley and cheese sells out the same day quite often. My favorite - though the other varieties are top notch too. I heard he still makes the sausage today but I can't confirm or deny that. Having moved to Naples, FL and then Myrtle Beach, SC - I had long forgotton Giacomo"s. Now back in PA (Allentown), I recently wanted good ravioli. The company that make the best ravioli in the world is Pastosa's. I went to their website and saw they opend a bunch of stores in both NY and NJ. I had just about talked myself into an hour or more ride when I found they also sold at select retailers. Wouldn't you know Giacomo's is one of them. My car drove itsel to Giacomo's and I got a box of the large ravioli, a bag of home made meatballs, and a qusrt of homeade tomato sauce. OMG - Pastosa still make the best ravioli in the world. And Giacomo's seel the full line including a bunch of ravioli varities, stuffed shells, manicoti and more.Of course I picked up some Italian specialties along the way while there. HEAVEN! Don't go hungry and bring plenty of money - because it's easy to drop a hundred dollars there and you'll have ZERO buyers remorse. Check out their website ba cause this review just scratches the surface of all the authentic Italian delicacies they have. Don't forget Junior's Cheescake - Simply The Best! Greek is my favorite cuisine - no contest…read more That said, I'm probably harsh and you'll possibly have a better experience. I stopped in between meetings by myself. The service at the counter was lacking as she was quick to explain that she is an actual server (I.e. she's poking for a tip) but didn't explain that I get a side salad with my order and that perhaps the other salad I ordered was overkill. Meh, I'll bring one home I guess. The inside is Greek blue and decently decorated but overall echoey and not a destination restaurant. The Australian lamb was to be medium and it came weeeeell done, but it was still juicy and flavorful so I didn't return it. Lamb can be tough and this one wasn't but I wouldn't call it tender and soft either. It was... meh. The fries are every day fries. The salad is decent and the homemade vinaigrettes is decent if not average. The salad was smothered in onion but the olives... in fact, olive was scarce. When I think Greek - I need me some kalamata and the rest. If I'm wanting to eat decently healthy with a protein and I'm in the area, I'll likely pop in again and try something new, but I'm definitely going to Yanni's or other good Greek places in the valley before I go out of my way to be back at "The Great Greek".

I enjoy the kibbe naye (raw meat with wheat bulgar and spices. It delicious just like my mother used to make. They only serve it on Saturdays as it is made to order. It's a large portion so if you do not eat all of it the one of the owners will fry it into patties for you to take home. The salads are fresh and delicious - actually everything is! To end the meal I order Arabic coffee and paklava made with walnut which I prefer to pistachios. The only problem is that it is located in a neighborhood with only street parking however it's worth this small aggravation.

Sahara Mediterranean Cuisine had great reviews, so we decided to give it a try--and we're so glad we did. We arrived around 5:30 PM, and the restaurant was already busy. The phone was ringing constantly with takeout orders, which is always a good sign. The husband and wife owners greeted us warmly, seated us right away, and brought complimentary water while we looked over the menu. We started with the hummus and pita along with the cheese cigars. Both were outstanding. We were told the hummus is made from fresh chickpeas that are slowly cooked rather than canned, and you can absolutely taste the difference. It was incredibly smooth, creamy, and easily some of the best hummus I've ever had. The fresh pita was the perfect complement. Two people in our group ordered the chicken kebabs with rice and the fresh tomato, cucumber, and red onion salad. I ordered the chicken shawarma with rice. It was my first time having authentic chicken shawarma, and it was phenomenal. Everything was seasoned perfectly, fresh, and full of flavor. I honestly can't imagine how anyone could leave a negative review after eating here. From the moment we walked in until the time we left, the food, service, and hospitality were exceptional. If we weren't racing the next morning, I definitely would have tried one of their cheesecakes. The blueberry and pistachio both looked incredible, and judging by the quality of everything else, I'm sure they would have been just as amazing. Before we left, we spent a few minutes talking with the husband, and it only reinforced how much pride they take in what they do. Allentown is lucky to have a restaurant like this. We have nothing comparable where we're from in Connecticut, and if we lived nearby, this would become a regular stop without question.

My First Five-Star Mix-Up…read more This might just be the first time I've ever given a 5-star review for an order that wasn't quite right. I placed a delivery order--two pies for our big family of eight--and only one showed up. Eight hungry people, one lonely pizza. You can imagine the scene. When I called, the mystery unraveled: another gentleman with my same name had stopped in, and walked out with a two-pizza order meant for us... without saying a word! Once the mix-up came to light, the owner herself, Janis, personally fired up the oven and baked not one but two fresh, perfect pies--then topped off the order with her homemade tiramisu to sweeten the evening. Sure, we had to wait an extra 30 minutes, and yes, the kids were getting restless. But the moment that tiramisu hit the table, all was forgiven. The pizza? A stellar rendition of the classic thin New York pie: a sauce that's sweet yet bold, cheese in perfect proportion, and that crispy "undercarriage" (shoutout to Dave Portnoy) that makes for an ideal bite every time. At first, I thought this might be our first and last order from DaVinci's. But after experiencing the warmth and integrity of this family-owned business--and seeing them go above and beyond to make it right--I'm all in for Janis and her family making it big here in the Lehigh Valley.

Strictly a Cheesesteak Review:…read more Absolutely sensational cheesesteak from Davinci's Pizzeria in Whitehall. The meat was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The house sliced Cooper Cheese was generously applied, as well as perfectly fried onions. The sandwich came together in Harmony on a seeded Liscio's Bakery submarine roll. You may have it toasted, which I believe is their standard or untoasted. I asked for an untoasted roll, and it was fresh as can be. Janis, who runs the show here, was an absolute delight! She answered a few questions I had with integrity and a smile. We talked about Allentown's 6th Ward and we know some of the same people. She provided me a sample of their house made fries and house dipping sauce. The dipping sauce recipe wasn't divulged, and for good reason! The fries are cut similar to a Frito Scoop, which is great for the dipping sauce! The cheesesteak was well above average, in my opinion. This steak is in the discussion for me with the elite shops in the area. The top photo is fresh at the shop. Bottom photo is after is was wrapped and brought home. I highly recommend Davinci's. I look forward to hearing other experiences. #rushieeats
