I would give negative stars if I could. His staff are incompetent and lazy. There's zero communication from anyone unless you initiate it. For example, they don't bother explaining the process to you at all. The woman there mailed me forms with all of my sensitive information on them without sealing the envelope. No real apology. Just excuses, an attitude, and telling me, "I'm only human." When you work at a law office, or any office where you're sending people's SS#, address, etc... Perhaps you should triple-check. I would've gotten fired for less working in healthcare. I spent so much time filling out paperwork, listing every doctor and clinic I've seen in the past few years. Let's just say that list is very long, and due to my disability, it is extremely difficult for me to remember things, and it takes me longer to gather information. I also signed a medical records release form in addition to a contract and other forms. Everyone I've talked to states their attorneys do all of the paperwork (which is why they hire them). Not this one. I wrote to the woman who works there, since I was told multiple times I would not be speaking to JP Gustad until "I guess when you go to court," and asked her about next steps/what to expect. Again, why am I having to do this? She then tells me what I already know. The date I appealed, and about how long it would take SSA to make a decision. That's it. Nothing about what they will be doing to help the outcome of said decision. Then she tells me to provide them with a list of doctors I've seen since MAY of this year. Unbelievable. What exactly is this firm doing? Had I not written to her, we all would've just sat around and waited for the SSA denial. I respond to her, pointing out how they should be retrieving my medical records and asking what they will and will not be doing so I'm aware. Low and behold, a call comes from their office. I'm unable to answer. Then I receive an email from Mr. Gustad. He asks me which of three doctors would support my disability diagnosis. I explain (in detail) each of their strengths & weaknesses, if you will. I, like almost every other person with disabilities, have doctors who don't really advocate for us, don't know much about our conditions, and leave us to fend for ourselves. I receive a very curt email from Gustad's office today (so they can communicate when it's on their terms) informing me that he will no longer be representing me (was he doing so before?). My advice is to pick literally any other firm. The red flags were there. If an attorney can't be bothered to do the bare minimum, you're better off on your own. Lastly, he sent me a text message as soon as I filled out the contact form on their website. Eager to get business, but that's about it. read more

Fifty years I put into the system, and then I became disabled. I applied on my own for disability but was turned down after an agonizing five-month wait. What a disappointment! I hired two other firms to help win my redetermination, but they were indifferent. Horrible communication. Then I turned to Gustad Law Group, which attracted me because they were attached to the same building as the Social Security Office, and they stressed how personally they take your case, especially as a disabled veteran. They went to work on my case right away. I turned over to them all my relevant medical records (and photos) as proof of my disabilities, Gustad Law did the rest. They won my re-determination a scant seventh months later, and that also got me Medicare Parts A and B along with a monthly cash payment. Look, I am just saying if you need somebody to explain information to you or represent you in your disability decision process go with these guys I needed some information being. I am already on disability and I couldn't even get anybody to entertain my questions being I wanted to pay them. There's some kind of weird scenario with Social Security and being paid hourly so it was very difficult for me to get anybody to entertain any of my questions. I called here and they explained that to me, but they still offered some of their time and explained a ton of my questions so I am leaving this review being I wasn't even a pain Customer but I was so extremely pleased with being treated right by somebody just trying to find the knowledge that I might not possess. I was badly injured while riding my bicycle onto the Burke Gilman Trail in Seattle. The railroad tracks are depressed into the blacktop and are not clearly visible and there was no signage identifying this hazard. I went down hard on my bicycle and badly injured my knee, fractured my shoulder and nearly required a total shoulder replacement. I called J.P. Gustad at Gustad Law Group and explained what happened. My story starts like most of us Veterans. In 2009, I was forced out of the military from budget cuts. They were finding any reason to let myself and others out of their enlistment. I had initial issues with pain while walking, and short-term memory loss. The Navy pumped me full of steroids to see if it would help with my leg issues. It did have a good reaction and made me start feeling better, but at the same time my weight exploded. The Navy excused me from the yearly PRT, but not the body weight. They discharged me with an honorable discharge because of weight issues that were brought on by my medical conditions. The VA had me do an initial examination for service connection disabilities. Like most of us, I was sent to a doctor that just looked me over and sent me on my way. They serviced connected me for symptoms of a bigger issue. As time passed, I screamed at the Spokane VA telling them something was wrong with me. I had more normal day functions becoming difficult. The VA at that time miss diagnosed me with Parkinson's Disease brought on by family history of having the disease, but none of the treatments they were giving me had any effect on my progression. It wasn't until about 8 years went by, they finally did a MRI on my brain and saw it full with scar tissues, and I also had two active lesions on my brain. It was Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. I filed for VA disability compensation at that time. The VA denied me because I was passed the presumption period of diagnosis of the disease. That is when I started to seek legal advice. I searched all over the Pacific Northwest for any attorney that would help me to fight the injustice that the Veterans Affairs was giving me. It wasn't until John-Paul Gustad and Corey Davenport heard my case that they immediately said they would sign on to represent me in my fight for the rights and what I am deserved. ***I am updating this review to reaffirm that you should seek someone else. My lack of appeal was not due to a lack of effort. You'd know that if you had listened to me. I am still within the time for my SSI appeal yet you insisted it's too late. I told you SSA said something different than you. They told me to apply. They told me how to apply. I didn't say we don't file appeals because we give up. I said there are things that happen that prevent us from appealing on time- which is why late requests exist. You did not disclose that though, I had to find that out from another lawyer. I won't take kindly to the accusations of "failures and excuses" from a man that refused to even hear why I hadn't appealed. You know nothing about the amount of energy I did or did not put into trying to get approved. Ableism, gaslighting, and lying aren't professional. Neither is trying to smear someone because you don't like a bad review. I stand by my statement to choose different lawyers.*** This group does not have the best interest of disabled people in mind despite claims to the contrary. The lawyer I just spoke with spoke over me repeatedly, giving me false information. My denials for SSI & SSDI are due to SSA continuously claiming I'm not disabled. I could not file appeals with my previous denials because disabled or not; I have a lot of responsibilities. I also have a disability that makes it incredibly hard to remember to do things & was not receiving treatment during any of the previous denials, so I would forget until it was too late. But the lawyer I spoke with didn't want to hear that disability contributed to my failure to appeal the decisions before. I was trying to tell him that. He didn't care that SSA told me I could still apply with an onset date of when I still had credits- he told me it was a done deal because I didn't appeal it. Even so, a person who genuinely wants to help a disabled person is going to be less worried about the "done deal" & more concerned about presenting the extenuating circumstances to a judge & demonstrating how they designed this process to cause us to fail. If a disabled person can't get SSDI/SSI, they still have to try to get money from somewhere to survive. So we'll work until burnout and then spend months, or longer, recovering. There often isn't time or energy for us to appeal, and that's part of the point. SSA designed it to deny as many people as possible, and then when you can't fight back because you're disabled, they're like, "Too bad, not our problem." A truly ethical lawyer would take on a case even if they were sure it would lose as a way to fight back against this. Every time a lawyer declines a case for a marginalized person because it's not "winnable," even if it's unjust, that lawyer allows this to be the way things are. Individual people are not going to get the government to revise these harmful policies on our own. We need legal support to help demonstrate to the powers that be that this is unjust- even if the cases aren't winnable. Only caring about winnable cases shows a want for a payout- not a desire to help disabled people. It's reprehensible, and lawyers have the power to use their energy to create change. He had no interest in helping me appeal my SSI denial, which is not work-credit-based. His sole reasoning is because of my spouse's income. He never allowed me to tell him that there was NO household income during the application period or that SSA told me to apply because it would pay for the period I was eligible & then it would term until I was eligible again. SSA advocated for doing exactly that so that I was in the system, and during any future losses of income, I'd be able to call and tell them I was without pay again & have my status changed. Again, income-wise, I was eligible at the time of application. He was so sure they'd still deny me because my spouse currently receives unemployment- disclosing very loudly that he has no idea what he's talking about. I was eligible at the time of the application. SSA denied me solely because they incorrectly concluded that I am not disabled, which is the part I need help with appealing. I wasn't asking for help with my SSDI claim as I'm outside of the window for appeal. I wasn't asking him to help me fight against an income-based denial. I asked him to help me fight against the wrongful determination that I'm not disabled because I otherwise qualify for SSI or did at the time of application. How could anyone call Gustad's office rude or unresponsive? I was called by John-Paul himself on a Saturday from home! We spoke for quite a while and he gave me so much help getting started with my SSI and SSDI claims that I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was really confused about what I was eligible for and what I had to do to move forward until he called. I also wondered what was relevant and what wasn't. He gave me a ton of great advice, which I did not find at other firms. I just don't see how the other two people had such awful experiences with this firm... but then I looked at the other reviews they had done and found that these same people just like to complain! They don't have any positive reviews. Not one! So, while they will go out of their way to complain, they won't ever go out of their way to compliment. I don't trust people like that. Do you? One of the things that I learned when I performed customer service was that some people just never want to be happy and they also don't realize the ramifications on businesses and individuals when they write terrible reviews. (Then again, maybe they are so self-important, they don't care--who knows?) It is still early in my SSDI process, but I am already very impressed by John-Paul Gustad and delighted to be working with his firm. I think that he is excellent... and so do all of the people I found on legal review sites like Avvo. One thing that people do have to keep in mind when they are working with an attorney is they aren't there to serve just YOU. They aren't your slave. They are a team member and they have a lot of other clients, so you can't eat up all of their time and expect them to be at your beck and call, especially with SSDI and SSI claims where they make relatively little money compared to other areas of law. Likewise, this isn't always the most uplifting area of law. Please keep that in mind. They are working with sick people who often have sad stories. These stories are hard to hear, day in and day out. Give them a break sometimes if they don't want to hear your life story twenty times and call your therapist or best friend instead. If I could rate this less than 1 star I would! I hired Gustad Law when my first two choices for SSDI representation were no longer available due to a Judgeship and a change in partnership. I really wished I would have done more vetting because this ended up being a decision that cost me not only months of waiting, but a few thousand dollars as well. I was expecting full representation and an attorney who would work on my behalf to obtain my benefits quickly and professionally. Gustad law never even contacted my primary care physician to put together the story of my issues and why I was applying for SSDI. After 9 months I finally reached someone at SSA and took jay case into my hands and within a month a favorable decision was made. It was because I stepped in that my case is now settled. Unfortunately Gustad law still gets paid. I contacted Mr Gustad about my frustrations in January after I reached SSA myself and he talked me into keeping my contract with him in case an appeal would be needed. This was the first time I had even spoken to Mr Gustad, so he really knew nothing about me or my case. Now, he has advised me that he would not represent me on appeal of my "date" but is keeping the full 25% of my settlement. Unbelievable that someone who is supposed to fight for me and represent me doesn't do either of those things (IMHO) yet still takes my money. How do people like this sleep at night? My case should have been a slam dunk. I truly believe that had my attorney prepared documentation for my various doctors and participated in giving advise on completing documentation required by SSA, not only would have the case been decided quicker, but the date of Disability would have been more favorable. If you are looking for a hands on attorney or an attorney who will provide counsel to you on your case, based on my experience, I would not hire Gustad Law. I requested an itemization of time spent on my case and documentation of what Gustad Law did on my behalf almost 2 weeks ago and still have not received anything. Very disappointed. The attorney that help me with my case was useless! She wasn't prepared when we met with the judge. I never met her until 30 minutes prior to court. Then she told me that this judge didn't like her.I could tell he didn't like her. He yelled at her for not having paper work that he had ask for. It wasn't a surprise that he denied my claim. After the fact, I was told by many people that they got screwed by this law firm. Wish I would have known. I have to add to my post. I read a few of other clients reviews. Maran Mill Bam was the attorney I was talking about. Another client wrote almost the same thing I wrote. She should find another career. I must say in all fairness. Don't bother with them. They are polite enough on the phone and in person, but "polite" isn't what I need from a lawyer. I fought for SSDI on my own for a while, and was advised to get a lawyer to help. I picked Gustad Law Group because they were nearby. I was told they would file things on my behalf and that I would have a meeting with them *the day before* my hearing. I eventually *got* the date for the hearing - and emailed them, asking about preparation. Twice. I finally heard back from them 10 days before my hearing. They emailed me to say they'd sent me a letter just days after I got my hearing date (approximately a month previous), saying they didn't think they could win my case so they were dropping me. No phone call to follow up, no further emails, nothing. I got my hearing postponed and have to find a new lawyer. read more

Avoid this place like the plague. Over a year ago I was seeking a disability lawyer for my case. Everything seemed good up front. My repeal was denied (as expected) and I was waiting for a hearing. I finally get a hearing date, so I called to find out what we needed to do to get ready for it. The receptionist sent me to one of the lawyer's voicemail and I left a message. 5 days later I get a letter in the mail saying that they have decided that my chances are not good enough for them to represent me and that they have decided dump me. They must have a lot on their plate and decided I wasn't worth their time anymore. They didn't even have the courtesy to return my phone call. My hearing is in just over a month away! I can understand if you feel like my case isn't worth it. But you could have told me that a year ago so I had time to find a different lawyer. You don't wait until the hearing is about to come up and then abandon your client. They have probably jeopardized what chances I had by hanging me out to dry with no time to build my case with a real lawyer. I am simply appalled by their lack of ethics and concern for their clients. You just don't do that to people. I don't know, maybe I have a case against them now. read more

I am going to start by telling you I don't have a lot of faith in attorneys, having been shafted for more money than I can say by them in the past. Jean Paul Gustad, his staff, and his associate Randy Wolfe were a truly refreshing surprise. They took my case in 2015, after I got hit by a mailman riding my bicycle, thrown nearly 30 feet, and ended up with severe spinal injuries and severe Post Concussive Syndrome. My attorney on the bike case threw the case, failed to file, and lied about, so I was left with serious injuries, a newborn daughter to raise alone, and zero income. The Gustad Law Group took my case, fought it until today, I finally got a positive finding after appeal.
