The cooks there chat with you as they serve you and customize your sandwich for you and makes it yours. The wake time is minimal. The shop is pick up and go. Regulars are known by name and greeted. This was my first time going to Gus's, and I had a great experience! The building is very small and has very limited seating options, but this wasn't an issue since there was enough room to wait for my order. I asked one of the cooks what he recommends, as I was a bit confused by the menu, and he convinced me to get the chili and slaw dog. I chatted with the staff a bit while my order was being prepared, and they were very kind. The wait time was short, and I was very pleased with the price! We needed to try Hot Dogs this week and usually Ive only eaten hot dogs at baseball or basketball games to trying a place in the Birmingham area was really nice. I did take out and the service was incredible. The staff was so sweet and patient and made me actually want to get food from there. Their menu is decently sized with not just hotdogs but with other food as well. The place had outdoor seating as well so since the weather has been nice recently there were also people sitting outside and inside. The inside was pretty clean as well and the service was really quick. The food is also very affordable, perfect for a college student if they wanted to save money but still eat something flavor full.  They definitly hit the spot for me and I will be going again to try other things from the menu that are probably just as good! I visited Gus's Hot Dogs for the first time during a week day. It was a little busy due to the lunch rush but the workers were able to keep the line moving. The shop is very tiny and kinda tucked away in downtown, I have never noticed it before visiting. When it got to be my turn, the worker was very patient and explained menu items to me since it was my first visit. When I got my order, I decided to take it to go, as there was not a lot of seating in the resturaunt. My order came with two hot dogs, a drink, and chips if I wanted them. The price was extremely fair and the food was delicious. It was a way better hot dog than I could make on my own. I have gone back since and my experience has not changed. Exactly what was expected. I was in town for a business trip and this place was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. In and out within 5 minutes with a Regular Dog: Standard Frank, Mustard, Onions, Kraut, Sauce, and a grape can of soda. Very affordable. The red onion sauce was unique, and sweeter than the NY style red onion sauce I am used to. But it was a unique and welcome change. Just make sure you eat your dog quickly, as they put a lot of toppings and I could see it making the bun soggy quickly. When I finally found the restaurant, i went inside, which was very tight with people standing and sitting. After looking over the menu and asking the cook what he recommended for a 1st time customer, I decided to get the regular hot dog all the way and the polish sausage made like the hotdog. My order was prepared quickly, the other employee took my payment, and then I went to my car to eat my hotdogs. I was disappointed at how small the hotdog was. The taste wasn't that great to me either. The sauce that was on the hotdog didn't have much of a taste. Gus's was a disappointment for me. read more

To stand up counters with about four stools. Ordered two hotdogs, one with chili and one with chili and slaw. They put the slaw before the chili which drips into and soaks the bun. The chili itself has some cumin flavor which is a staple of the Greek chili recipes which was good. The hotdog itself had no flavor which was disappointing. If you haven't had a hot dog from here , you are missing out on a real treat! On my recent visit , I had the #1 combo , which consisted of : 2 regular dogs( all the day) bag of dill chips and a drink(coke) for $7.00. I like for my hot dogs to be a little on the burnt side and they accommodated my request, happily. It's so apparent that the staff takes such pride in providing great service and serving up great food. This is the norm here! Gus's is a small little hotdog shop located in downtown Birmingham. This is the original location but there are other locations in surrounding areas. I've tried other locations but I LOVE the nostalgic feeling of the downtown location. Also the food to me is way better. Hot dogs , burgers , golden flake chips and a can grapico soda ... doesn't get any better than this! Gus's Hot Dogs seemed like the right place to get a chili dog and I was not disappointed!!! It is small and takes up a corner space. It was late lunch time and I was able to fined metered parking. Upon entering, the guys on shift were very welcoming and a delight to encounter. I ordered the #3 combo, 2 Chili dogs (chili with a little kick, nice sprinkle of onions and just the right amount of mustard) a bag of Sweet Heat chips, and a bottle of Grapico to wash it all down. I got it during lunch time and i was able to find a good parking spot. When I entered they employees were really friendly and inviting. Some of the employees had masks and that was pretty mush it for the COVID precautions. I got the the #3 combo, it has 2 Chili dogs, a bag of Sweet Heat chips, and water. This was my first time trying Gus's Hot Dogs, and it was amazing. After reading all the great reviews, I decided to give it a try. I went to the downtown location and the service was great and fast. The worker was knowledgeable about the menu, and he answered all the questions I had. I ordered the chili dogs and they were delicious. It came with onions and mustard on the hotdog which paired very well with the chili. They also have burgers. Service is friendly and fast. I got the chili dogs with cheese. Make sure to get at least 2. You won't regret it. Visited Gus's while in town for the Birmingham Bowl. Definitely had to circle the block because I missed it on the first pass. Parking was easy to find on the street nearby. The place is small and the gentlemen behind the counter are very friendly. While I was there they handled a transition from a quiet restaurant to a full place, with a line, and a large call in order. I was really impressed. They took the time to explain to me their hot dog options. I got two dogs and I'm still not completely sure what all the toppings were. I know they had their special sauce which was so so so good; a sweet, spicy, tangy concoction. I believe chili and ground beef were separate toppings which just makes my heart sing. I went to this place a couple of weeks ago and tried one of their chili dogs. It was recommended to me by one of my closest friends, who says she enjoys coming here during her free time. I first ordered a chili dog, that came with mustard and onions on top. And then I ordered another hot dog, which was the slaw dog and that came with slaw, sauce, mustard, and onions on top. I would say that not only did I enjoy both of my hot dogs, but I enjoyed the staff there. I go there specifically for the double cheeseburger which is awesome. Has flavor and always cooked perfect. Workers are friendly. Service is fast. It is a small hole in the wall place and a few spots to eat inside but it is more of a takeout place. Few chairs outside as well. The hot dogs all the way are awesome as well.
