A few weeks ago I brought a Pierre Cardin shawl-collar tuxedo jacket and trousers to Gus' for alteration. I'd purchased the tux in 2004, had worn it a few times since then, but when I tried to squeeze into the suit...yikes! You get the idea. I picked up the suit today. Fatemeh was a miracle worker. She managed to add a couple of inches to the waist and added some room to the jacket in a way that is essentially undetectable. I am very pleased with the job that she did and can't wait to wear it to an event in a couple of weeks. It's also worth noting that she kept me updated on the status of the alterations via text. Wonderful! I brought in a very delicate, green, silk dress with layers and lace a few weeks ago. It was far too big/baggy for me, but Fatemeh altered it to fit perfectly and the seams are gorgeous. Fatemeh is also just very kind, and the price was very reasonable. read more

Nothing is ever the right size and this wonderful woman tailored my pants to perfection! They were altered to fit my 5'1" frame and tapered so they were not too wide not too skinny, simply perfection. I highly recommend! read more

I took a heavy tweed sport coat here. It needed to have the sleeves shortened and the whole coat was too long. She did a fabulous job. Shortening a sport is very difficult especially with a very heavy tweed. There are very few tailors who will do this. I am going to take all my clothes that need tailoring here. read more

I have to say I was just looking for a better fit both times I brought pairs of slacks to Fatemeh and yes she performed that miracle beautifully, but also there was no sign of taking stitches out or re-seaming or anything bulky...both times it was such an amazingly neat job. and she's so very kind and friendly. I never got to see the quality of service this place provides, because when I called the rudeness was too unbelievable to ever let me give them any business. I asked a question about how quickly a simple hem could be done. She couldn't meet my requirements for speed, no problem there. But then I was rudely told that she was busy and to go bother someone else. If you can't perform the task within the time frame, I totally understand, but why insult your potential future customers? I moved to the area several months back. So many things get lost in a move, and a good tailor was definitely something I took for granted. I went to Gus' Custom Tailoring because I like to support local business, and it was one of the best decisions I've made since moving here. Vula does amazing work and she is incredibly sweet. This place might be the best tailor in the world, but I will leave it to someone who has a lot of time to waste to find out. Visit 1: I stroll up on 8/12, walk inside and find out from the lady working inside (who coincidentally was very nice) that the tailor has gone downtown and promised to be back in a few minutes. I sit down to wait, but after 30 minutes the rest of my day beckons and I decide to leave. Visit 2: Today, against my better judgment, I decide to stop by again since the garments I need tailored are still in my trunk from last week. At 10:55am, a closed sign was prominently displayed right beside the hours sign that indicates they open at 10:30am on Saturdays. I give up. read more

The story is super simple. I'm frugal, so I fix my jeans before I buy another pair. I needed two patches sewn onto my pants so they're legal to wear in public. I call. I was told in broken English, and in an aggressive tone, "I can't-bothered with this type-work, you try some1 else". I said "goodbye", then immediately went to Yelp.com to write this review. Gus' Tailoring is located on West Main next to Continental Divide and across the street from the Amtrak Station and Wild Wing. It's a one-woman shop run by "Mrs. Gus" a super-sweet Greek woman who has run the shop for over 30 years and started it with her husband "Gus" who has since passed. I've been to a few tailors in Cville and Gus' is by far the best. The pricing is on par with other shops in town but the quality is great and the turn-around time isn't long either (1-2 weeks depending on what you need done, and faster if you need it ASAP). Generally open 10-5 weekdays, but keep in mind it is just Mrs. Gus so I always call ahead to make sure she's there before I head over. On pick-up bring a check or cash as she doesn't take credit cards. read more

I have been going to Gus's Custom Tailoring for years: I also use tailors in New York and D.C., and I have never found a tailor that is a better value than Gus's. Gus's Custom Tailoring is an old-world style shop that was the practice of two tailors who immigrated from Greece: Gus and his wife Vula. Vula is now Gus's widow, and she is one of the most honorable and kindest people I have ever met. For regular customers she routinely does small jobs for no fee. For larger jobs, her prices are an incredible value. Sometimes I bring her old clothes and she reinvents them! Just tell her what to do & she will get the job done. She always has her work done either early or on time. This is not some corporate schlock-shop tailor that will do crummy work. It is the best of the old European craft of custom tailoring. Maybe some UVA kid or other will complain that the hours aren't managed as if the place were a friggin McDonald's, but that person knows nothing about finding the good things in life! This is a one-woman tailoring shop, and she is almost always there. I have never found someone who takes more pride in her tailoring work than does Vula. Sure, Gus's is not Huntsman in London, but compared to Huntsman the cost is about a penny on the dollar. read more

SO GRATEFUL I CAME HERE. Can't be beat! Looked up C-ville Tailor and tried this one based on reviews. Wedding deadline and pants needing to be taken in left me short on time and attire. Vula not only hurried the job to help me out, she spotted my jacket sleeves being easily an inch too long and took them in too. She had them ready BEFORE she said she would and saved my butt with care, careful attention to detail, a great price and her cheerful, generous ways. I love it. I have a designer label sport coat which that needed some alterations, and found Gus' Custom Tailoring after the seamstress at my local dry cleaners said she wouldn't attempt the alternations I was asking for. I'm happy that I had to look elsewhere because the tailoring work done by Gus' was first rate and completed on time, which is what matters most to me. I thought the woman in Gus' who did the tailoring was friendly and pleasant enough. She took the time to point out to me some features of my garment that required special attention -- more information than I needed but it was appreciated. I'm surprised by some of the comments from people who thought she was rude but that was not my experience at all. read more

Vula is a hard-working, kind, and honest woman. She has fixed multiple of my dresses, my brother and my father's suits, and is consistently a high-quality tailor. She runs the shop on her own and her prices are extremely reasonable! I will keep coming back to Gus' for as long as I'm at student at UVA! read more
