You have to go through the store go up few steps up behind the order counter all the way to the back Hidden spot. Ordering was quick and you can see the cooks in the back making the food. The tacos were fresh and delicious meat filled to the brim with mild and spicy sauce of your choice and wedges lime to enhance the flavor. Chips were deliciously fried. Had Gus Tacos for the first time last week and it was sooo good. We ordered the birria and pastor tacos, and birria broth and oh mannn was it so good! I went on a Thursday midday and there were still a few people in line ahead of me! Great to see they're busy on a weekday! The cashier taking orders inside was very kind and helped answer any questions I had about the menu. If it wasn't raining, I would've checked out the patio but the seating inside was still nice and clean. The burrito was amazing! I got the asada burrito with medium hot sauce (which comes on the side). This allowed me to evenly distribute the amount of sauce that's good for me. We came here for lunch during a work day. The food was really good. My favourite was the chicken taco! We love how loaded the tacos are. The Kensington location also had a backyard patio, which was perfect for the summer. The service is a little slow, so do plan ahead with the wait time. The absolute worst bean and cheese burrito I have ever had. No word of a lie there are much better burritos at Taco Bell. There were hardly any beans at all it was all overwhelmed with fresh cheese. Felipe properly explained the menu items and also gave some welcome suggestions. We had the asada taco and quesa dilla birrias, both of which are extremely good. The ambiance and authenticity of the food place was something I also appreciated. There were a lot of latinos (or at least Spanish speakers) among the customers, and that is one good indicator that says that they are doing something right with their food. Had very high hopes for this based on reviews from Kensington market locations to hit up. For $5 a taco the prices are not steep but the size is not huge. The quesadilla is not a large one either which is why it's probably $7, but it was much more flavorful and I much preferred it to the tacos. Horchata - more authentic tasting that has that grainy taste more than just powder that dissolves. Decent overall Quesadilla - carnitas - little oily but with that comes a lot of flavor and definitely enjoyed Tacos - pastor, asada, and pescado - my favorite was actually the battered fish. I tried out 4 types of tacos: the barbacoa (braised lamb), carnita (braised pork), pescado (grilled fish) and camarón (battered shrimp). They have such a huge selection of tacos that it's perfect if you are going to a group of people with different tastes. All the tacos are rich in flavour and great quality ingredients. My favourites were the barbacoa and pesacado. The barbacoa was a unique flavour I haven't had from other taco places. The pescado you can taste the fresh grillness of the fish. First time at Gus and I think the proteins are hit or miss. The Caritas was delicious and very well-seasoned, but I think it needed another dimension of flavour. Pretty disappointing experience overall. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, which is to be expected. When it came time to pay, we were informed that the card reader was malfunctioning, so we had to wait for the system to come back online. Not the restaurant's fault, but it was a long wait for a fairly short line. We waited another 30 minutes for our food, while they called all of the order numbers around ours, never calling ours. We finally went up to check on our order, and they'd gotten the number wrong. Our tacos had now been sitting for about 15 minutes getting cold. I noticed an al pastor taco in the order (I didn't order al pastor), and told the staff I didn't order that. They said "oh it's good, it's one of the best in Mexico!" (Thanks? I know what it is, I don't like pineapple, so I didn't order it on purpose...) shoved it in the box anyways, and sent me on my way. They're definitely stuffed and getting any three tacos will certainly fill you up. The tacos are kept simple, with just a tortilla, meat, onions, and cilantro. They're tasty, flavourful, and you will absolutely be satisfied with them. A new taco joint opened up in Kensington Market! It's where the old Sweek Olenka's used to be on Agusta Avenue. We only stumble by this place because we spotted the "NOW OPEN" sign and the "BARBACOA" writing on the wall. The menu is extensive and the space is completely transformed with lots of seating. The decor made you feel like you were in an authentic Mexican taqueria. I feel that today (Apr 6, 2019) was their soft opening so there was a longer wait for our food but I'm sure this will improve. We ordered 2 tacos (the barbacoa (braised lamb) and the pollo (chicken)) and they were goooooood. They even have a toppings station next to the cash register! Yeah, I know that Seven Lives is the King of Tacos in Kensington but get ready, this place is about to go head to head with SL. If you want bang for your buck in terms of amount of meat/protein in your taco, then Gus Tacos is your place. It's not so much for me though, hence the 3-star rating. I ordered the lamb, fried fish, and pork with pineapple tacos. The piece of fish was big, and the amount of meat in the tacos was also big. However, the toppings and flavour of each taco weren't very unique to me. I tend to like different sauces and garnishes to be paired with the meat choice of the taco, so that there are different flavour profiles for each. My daughter purchased hot sauce.The bag the hot sauce was in got wet and when she picked up the bag the hot sauce fell out and broke.My daughter went inside to get jar cleaned up etc....the manager gave us another bottle at no cost. I can't believe this is my first time trying these tacos!! There was a line up out the door and onto the streets. They were so busy and popular. Luckily the line up was much shorter after a walk around the neighbourhood. We even got seats in the back patio! We got the fish, carnitas, steak and marinated pork. The steak was my favourite. A good mix of meat and fat. Yum. The veggies were really fresh and the flavours on the tacos were perfect. The carnitas were soft and juicy. Fish was crispy. COME HERE FOR TRUE AUTHENTIC TACOS. Honestly won't disappoint. This review is actually for the parkdale location, but the tacos itself here is stuffed with lots of flavour and meat. Price is super cheap (can get a taco starting at 5$) and 2 tacos is already super filling. I've tried the fried fish (not as great as seven lives) but still very delicious Asada (grilled steak), so tender and flavourful Barbacoa, soooo delicious and juicy the meat Carnita, spicy and tasty Their garnishes are also super simple, onions and cilantro and they have 3 different types of hot sauces to choose from. Get the salsa verde and the spicest one. Its amazing! Also, try their Chilacas version..... its a stuffed pepper filled with cheese that is pipping hot in your taco. So so goood!! Having passed by Gus Tacos in Kensington Market (as well as their location in Parkdale as well), and most often seeing people walking in and out of the shop with what looked like delicious tacos, I opted to finally give the Gus Tacos in Kensington Market a try. Now I see what the hype was all about. Here's what I think makes Gus Tacos work so well (in addition to what was really super friendly service and a wide array of choices of tacos): the tortillas are nice and fresh, the meat is plentiful, freshly cooked with lots of flavour, and the side ingredients (sauces, toppings and salsas) compliment the tacos nicely. I opted for the asada (steak) taco and battered fish taco and both had a fresh, generous amount of the protein on a fresh tortilla and yummy toppings. Next time, I think I will go for the shrimp and chicken. Service was also very efficient. You go in, put in your order and 15 minutes or so later, someone will bring your fresh order out. Delicious, delicious, delicious. Starters? The chips and guac are awesome. The chips are thick and a bit oilier than supermarket chips but it's a good thing. I would imagine they make them in house or have a primo supplier. The tacos are bigger than some of the other Mexican restaurants close by and in other parts of town and the ingredients fresh and tasty. Only drawback I'd say is they're a wee bit pricey. Look, I get why. The cost of food and it's Toronto. And Covid has taken away business. Visited here for takeout during COVID times and it was pretty average/meh. Ordered the tacos el pastor and carnitas. Both were soooo dry and lacking in flavour. They came with tiny pieces of dry lime that did nothing to save the day :( i'm sure the condiment station would have made it 10x better with the salsa but that obviously wasn't available due to the pandemic precautions.
