Love all of the hidden gems in Kensington Market, and La Chilaca Taqueria is no exception - it's awesome. Super tiny spot, located in the middle of the building, which houses other niche food stalls. In terms of eating in, there are community folding tables and chairs at the back of the space, super rustic vibes but you don't come here for the Instagram photo opps if you know what I mean. The service was friendly and quick, we were able to place our orders quickly. Tacos were absolutely delicious - I can't recall the exact ones we tried but they were amazing. Super flavourful, tender, and just really tasty. Make sure you ask for a side of their green salsa on the side, its sooooo good. We ended up taking the bit we had leftover and used them on fried eggs for breakfast the next morning - omg hot sauce heaven. If anyone from La Chilaca Taqueria reads this, please consider making batches of your hot sauce to sell, it's addictive!

Tried the brocheta taco on a busy Saturday. The food was tasty and fresh. The corn tortilla was crispy and filled with flavourful beef. Overall a satisfying snack and would recommend!

Honestly one of the most delicious taco joint ever!! Huge size Al pastor steak burrito is just $9.05 including tax. Even tho it's not wrapped up with rice, but it's densely packed with black beans, cheese, meat, pepper, onions, and your choice of salsa. They have 5 different salsa with different spicy level, and I choose to mix the 2 most spicy one together. The staff were super nice, it's honestly a hidden gem in Kensington market, I loved it so much. Burrito - Al Pastor Steak - $8.00 ($9.05 including tax)

The dynamic duo working here impress me with their food, attitude and zest for cooking up tacos and burritos. These are solid lunch items, guaranteed to keep you going through your day, not some cutesy bar snack. A nice big chunk of fish, lean and well-seasoned chorizo, and pastor full of flavour these double shelled tacos are bursting out of the tray which barely holds the two of them. The sauces are a must-try! You need to go alongside the counter and grab a plastic cup to take to your seat at the back of this incredible culinary experience of a food court. There are three sauces and they are all worth a taste. I need to come back to try one of their burritos, if the tacos are any indication, the burrito will be the best I've ever tried, and blow everything else out of the Mexi-To landscape.

Thanks to Yelp, I found this lovely spot! La Chilaca Taqueria is treasure deep in the heart of Kensington Market. We ordered up an Al Pastor taco and a chorizo taco. They come simply dressed, the way they should be. Some onions and cilantro with a hearty meat, and the Al Pastor came with a nice wedge of pineapple. There are mild, medium and spicy hot sauces on deck for your pleasure. There's a small seating area in the back or during a warmer day, these would be great taken outdoors. If in doubt, go here! I had a different taco spot on lock in Kensington and my opinions have since changed...

Let's taco bout this. Affordable tacos with well sized portions. What else can you ask for ? La chilaca taqueria is small taco shop serving delicious morsels for a great price! Selling 3-5$ tacos and certain specials (like 10$ for 4 pastor tacos). I ordered the carne, pastor, carnitas, pollo, and fish. I only wish I didn't get full so fast because I wanted more. Probably the closest thing I've tasted to tacos on the street in Mexico. Would highly recommend the fish ( very fresh and light) and the pastor (if you're a fan of pineapples) and if not go for the pork. They even have there own salsa station with grilled jalapeños to accompany your tacos for a complete bite. The shop is small and the interiors aren't of high class but who cares, cause the food is amazing. Number Juan in my books.

Too many to name but grilled fish, carnitas, beef, and shrimp is in there. Skip the veggie

3.5 stars to some more great options of 4 stars. Not going to lie... it's true Kensington in every sense of the neighbourhood. If you're willing to look past the rough and gritty exterior, you may find some good tacos here. Nothing risked is nothing gained and I feel that La Chilaca Taqueria fits that perfectly. It's in the 'food court' of several Latin American food stalls. Food court is an understatement... It's more like a disheveled, heavily worn and dirty open non A/C store that has every stall spilling out into a small room. It shares the space with 3 other stalls. There are some tables in the back of the dingy place but there's a weird smell emanating from the back as you sit beside several broken old unused glassed counters. On a crazy hot day, the lack of A/C makes this insane and feel like an oven. The open back door to a few more seats barely helps. The 'kitchen' is really a small stove top and a crammed setting of a kitchen sink and a counter to assemble. You're quickly greeted and told to look up at the menu. There are daily deals like 2 chorizo tacos for $5 or 4 other tacos for $10. Each taco is $5 each regardless of the type. When we went, the carnitas werent ready but they had 8 other ones you could try. Service here is efficient but I have to admit they were all busy with the World Cup... can't blame them since the entire Kensington (let's be real... Toronto) is watching. I do have to worry a bit when we overheard the person in the kitchen saying how can they cook this chicken in under 3 minutes... ehhhh wut? How about cooking it till it's done? I have to admit the addition of their sauces really perked these up so grab some before taking a bite into them. The creamy orange one has some good heat that could make you water up a bit if you're not careful. I wasnt expecting that type of heat and wow, yeah... ice cream was needed to cool my tongue. What I thought would be the spicy red transparent sauce was actually a tomato one that didn't have any heat and just added a little bit of flavour. There was also a nice vibrant green sauce that was very good mix of mild jalalpeno, onions, and cilantro. Totally refreshing to add. Fish Taco - My favourite of the tacos. The fish pan fried and still tender without being dried out. This was a stuffed taco... the type where you take a bite and you realize that the sauce and pickled onions are just going to be exploding soon. The sauce just oozes out onto your hand and you're soon licking your fingers. The cilantro just gives a nice freshness to it... I know, not everyone likes cilantro but it's good on this one. Another thing I love about this... they double wrap the taco so they dont fall apart easily AND they toast the corn tortilla up so they're a bit crispy. Nice one. 4/5 Vegetable Taco - Soooo I keep ordering Vegetable Tacos and I keep wondering why afterwards. My search for a good one continues but I learned that tofu and cheese really doesn't work... at... all. I feel like you do one or the other. It's just a weird combination. In addition to those, they had cilantro, pickled onion, and tomatoes. This one wasn't as flavourful so it really benefits from either the orange hot sauce (that will scorch you) or green fresh herb one. 3/5 Chorizo Taco - Another solid taco with the paprika giving the pork a nice flavour. It was cooked fresh from the sausage and it didnt taste like it was standing in some pot for a few hours. They garnished with pickled onions and cilantro and helped cut through the rich meat. I was told this was authentic to the style in Mexico city. 4/5 Beef Taco - Maybe I wasn't in the mood for cheese but the beef and cheese one didn't quite work. As generous as they were with the cheese... I just felt this one was really quite heavy and a bit oily. The beef was possibly a bit overcooked which made it a bit on the dry side. I could have added more sauce to it but something didn't quite work as well as the chorizo. 3/5 Shrimp Taco - This was a solid one with small shrimps cooked fairly well.. they werent rubbery or dried out. Just a nice juicy chew. They added a spice to it that kept it out of the bland side ... though I have to admit, this wasn't as flavourful as the Chorizo. This one does work well with a sauce to keep it from being boring. They did garnish with the usual pickled onions and cilantro. 3.5/5 There are some really good tacos coming out of here and made freshly with some in house made sauces that really make the tacos pop. BUT if you're the type where you're concerned about atmosphere, this might put you off. Worse case, you can take it to go and eat it while you're walking about Kensington but just bring a few napkins, ok a lot... cause you're going to be leaving a trail of food dripping otherwise!

I was recommended this place by a barber locally. It was so worth it! I was not impressed by Trompo, so I was interested in checking this place out. The Corn tortilla was definitely very good, the tacos had a lot of meat, and the guy who worked here was super nice. I am crowning this place as my new favorite taco place in Toronto. I have been looking for a new place since moving from Los Angeles and this is the first place that has really passed the test. I would go back

Located at the back of the El Gordo complex in Kensington Market is a little hole in the wall you will not want to miss. La Chilaca Taqueria serves up authentic delicious Mexican cuisine at a price point that will knock your socks off! I ended up trying their daily special (two Pastor Tacos for $5.00) and was thoroughly impressed. First of all, these things are huge (similar to the ones at Seven Lives). They have a crisp, grilled double layered corn tortilla which was absolutely delicious - soft, pliable and surprisingly light with just a hint of sweetness and a slight charred flavour. What really amazed me was that the tortilla held together even with all the filling inside it! The inside of the tortilla is stuffed with a generous amount of delicious, tender marinated pork which was then topped with fresh onions, pineapple and cilantro. I loved how the sweet juicy pineapples added a vibrant summertime feel to the well-seasoned meat and the cilantro complimented everything with a light citrusy and peppery overtone. I squeezed on a splash of lime for a bit more of a sweet citrus kick. And then added on some of the red spicy sauce to enhance the flavours (although in retrospect, I should have probably gone with the green mild sauce instead). Definitely a taco you won't want to miss!

I came here to try out some tacos. The tacos average in price about $5 each. They have different sauces that you can put on your tacos. I tried the pork tacos. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't memorable either. This place is located inside and there are other businesses inside as well. It was hot and stuffy. The restaurant wasn't the cleanest either. Overall, it was just ok. A bit cheaper than the more famous place across the street.

[LOCATION] - 4/5 This place is located at Augusta Ave and Nassau St inside a building with a bunch of small Mexican/Spanish vendors. [SERVICE] - 4/5 The cashier was friendly and helpful as she answered our questions about the menu. [DÉCOR] - 3/5 Seating area inside is limited, but there is more room on the patio (open during the warm season). [QUALITY] - 3/5 Tortilla and toppings were fresh. However, the pork was a little dry without the sauce. [ORDER] - 4/5 - Pastor Tacos - 2 for $5.00: comes with marinated pork, topped with fresh onion and pineapple in a small flour tortilla. Meat was very well-seasoned. You can also add the delicious green mild sauce, red spicy sauce, cucumbers, and mango salad to enhance the flavours! [OVERALL] - 4/5 For $5.00, you actually get a lot of food! The combination of spices, sauces, and fresh ingredients complement the Pastor very well. I would definitely recommend this place for their tacos!

Absolutely amazing! Two overflowing tacos for $5. Made fresh right in front of you and worth the wait. I had one chorizo & one steak. The steak was a bit bland but the chorizo was ridiculously good. I'll be back for sure.

Continuing our downtown food tour we decided to try the La Chilaca Taqueria in the El Gordo complex in Kensington. Didn't know at the time but the building houses several food stalls and this was the place where Seven Lives Tacos got there start before they exploded on the scene. The tacos here were delicious! For $5 you get a specialty taco and for $3 you get a basic taco but they are all fantastic! Double wrapped, stuffed with protein of your choice and freshly made in house salsas to drown your tacos in. There is some serious value here folks! I'm not an authentic Mexican food expert but these tacos are probably more traditional ones then the Baja California ones at Seven Lives. Which one is better? F*ck me man don't ask me that!! Its kinda like that movie "Sophie's Choice", which child do you choose? I love them both but in different ways!! Its a small set up as only 2 guys work with one doing all the cooking and one helping out. They are really nice and deserve all the success given to them. Will be back! 5/5!

Al Pastor tacos. 2 for $5 as their daily special!

The inside was nice, it was dark with ambient lighting and decorated with a modern and Mexican theme. The waitress was super nice, and the staff were fairly attentive. We got the chips and guac to start. I do wish they gave a little bit more walk because it came in this really small cup so we had to go light on the guac to chip ratio. But overall the guac was yummy and the chips were very crunchy with a nice seasoning. They have a special every day of the week and Thursdays are there crunch tacos, which are hard shell tacos, wrapped in a soft shell taco with some sauce in between, and you can choose between their chorizo or chicken. We got one of each. I liked the chicken more but my partner liked the Chorizo. And all the toppings the perfect Fixin's. They only had three washroom stalls, which were gender neutral, and I thought they were relatively clean.

You enter the restaurant from a set of stairs outside and the restaurant doesn't look too appealing from outside. Also, the restaurant always seems busy and/or small, so it's always loud and service is slow. With the negatives out of the way, let me explain why I love La Carnita! The food is amazing! Their tacos are on point, and with so many to choose from I can go back multiple times can never get bored. Each of their tacos has something different to offer and each has relatively good balance to them. The balance of freshness and savory (and sometimes sweet) toppings is well done, making me come back for more. The one item that pushes La Carnita over the top is their nachos! Homemade nacho chips with gooey cheese and a generous amount of toppings makes them my favorite nachos in Toronto! One last observation is that the service is always friendly. They may be (very) slow at times but they seem like they always try their best and are always quite pleasant. Overall, I love La Carnita and when I get a craving for tacos and nachos, I'm heading straight here!

Hacienda is located on College Street, very close to Sneaky Dees, in a bit of a tucked away, inconspicuous location. The interior is fantastic and the atmosphere is authentic. There are a lot of reviews that knock this place for service, but that's not really the point of this restaurant. It's a family run place where the focus is food and soccer (when it's on) if you need something, you may need to call the serve over yourself, but that's no big deal cocerning the food. The tacos are the best I've had in the City. At three tacos for $12, it's hard to go wrong. After reading some of the previous reviews, the beef tongue was an obvious choice. I'm not too big in beef personallty, but the meat was so tender and almost melted. Next was the chorizo taco. It was fantastic. The chorizo wasn't overly salty like in a lot of other Mexican restaurants, which made a huge difference. The flavor was deep and rich, and paired perfectly with the salsa. Lastly was the carnitas. It's hard to make carnitas as good as Seven Lives, but wow, these were something else. The carnitas were tender, juicy, and perfectly crispy. The corn tortillas were also made in-house and were fresh and delocious. The servers also bring two sauces to the table - one salsa verde (green salsa) and one hot sauce. Both were great but be careful with the hot sauce, it's a heavy hitter! Pro tip: get a Mexican Coke, it's amazing! Hacienda is the best taco place is the City. Seven Lives is a close second, but Hacienda has them beat in terms of authenticity and flavor. Put this place on your go-to list, it will it dissapoint. 5/5
