Wow! What a pleasant discovery! I was house sitting for my sister's family up in McHenry County for the weekend and my girlfiends and I made a minivactaion out of it. Saturday we spent beautiful mid 80's partly sunny day hiking around Lake Geneva 20 minutes north of us. The next day was a drastic difference in weather; 55 degrees, damp and rainy. We originally planned to attend Calvary Community Church and afterwards looked forward to a hike at Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy next door. The 8 a.m. worship service was enough to brighten our driery morning, but sadly our mini vacation had to be cut short. A hike was not appealing in the rain so we headed home. As we were driving along highway 41 heading south, Linda happened to be reading the signs and mentioned we were entering Gurnee. Faith ears perked up and suddenly we had to make a detour to Gurnee Donuts. Faith had been to Gurnee Donuts before so she was all too familiar with the ube declicacies which are created in this tiny shop. Upon entering the place was packed with people, I read a posted sign, "Ube donuts only avaiable on Saturday and Sunday". It felt good to know it was Sunday and surprisingly there were a number of ube donuts avaiable that late in the morning. I ended up buying a dozen donuts for "pasalubong". Never realized there was such a variety of ube donuts. The unique looking sugar crusted huge thick ube donuts sparkeled radiantly and drew my attention immediately. They tasted as good as they looked (my favorite of the 3 I tried). I also tried the 2 coconut ube varieties. After ordering the dozen, Faith discovered they had ube cinnamon rolls which were only avaiable that day. Of course I had to order some since they were rare; at $4 each I asked for 4 keeping my total just under $50. I believe the donuts were $2.50 each. The friendly employees added to the pleasant experience. As I inquired about the shop the nice young man who attended to us pointed out all the donut trophy awards they had won since they opened in 1994. I found the Gurnee Donuts to be another blessing to brighten the unseasonably cool rainy summer day. If you are in route to any town north of Gurnee, I highly suggest to take a short detour and stop in for a donut break--make sure it's not their closed days! read more

I totally get why Gurnee donuts made the top 100 donuts! Absolutely delicious! The ube donut was thick and fluffy, great sweetness and flavor. We also got the maple bacon bar which was smoky, crispy and sweet. The Boston creme had great chocolate glaze flavor and the creme was thick, creamy and sweet. Stopped here before heading to a beach. Based on the Instagram-worthy pics I had seen, I expected the interior to be bigger, but it's actually quite small. They have the donut counter up front with another shelf of trays in the back, and there's a fridge with standard bottled/canned drinks. The selection of donuts is pretty good, but they're not labeled, so you have to know what you want. Mostly standard flavors aside from the purple ube donuts. Anyway, we got a glazed yeast donut, a sprinkled long john, and an ube cake donut with coconut. Each donut was excellent. The yeast donuts were nice and fluffy, and the cake donut was moist. Pricing is reasonable; a bit more than Dunkin, but these are premium donuts. Wouldn't mind stopping here again if we're in the area. read more

Came here at the beginning of their store hours to get some of their ube donuts only to find out they weren't ready. The lady said they wouldn't be ready for at least an hour. Never been to a food establishment where they don't have all their food items ready to go at the beginning of their store hours. Aside from the fact that they were not fully prepared for business and the inconvenience of having to wait at least an hour, the donuts I eventually got were pretty good. Managed to kill some time while waiting for the ube donuts to be ready to be sold. If you do plan on getting any of their other donuts they'll be there for you. Just don't always expect the ube donuts to be ready right at opening. These ube donuts are only available on the weekends btw. Appreciated the limited entry and the multiple stations with hand sanitizer. Made it easier to social distance added to the experience. read more

I had a craving for apple fritters and decided to stop by this shop. The store is clean and smells of delicious doughnuts. The customer service was great. The lady who served the doughnut gave me free doughnuts holes along with the doughnuts I purchased. The doughnuts taste homemade, are flaky and moist. It is impossible to eat just one or two doughnut holes. Although the doughnut holes are small, they are delicious. The apple fritter has just enough cinnamon to and apples it. The chocolate doughnut, which had a thick layer of rich creamy frosting is perfect for the chocolate lovers. After numerous attempts to come here for the ube donuts (a couple of times they were sold out), I finally decided to come as early as I possibly could so this past Saturday, I woke up at 6:30 a.m. and gave them a call to pre-order my ube donuts. I thought hurray! They're not sold out. Whew! The donuts were a beautiful purple but after tasting each and every donut, I realized that there was great flavor, texture and sweetness but the question was, did it taste like ube (purple yams) and the honest answer is.....drum roll please....not so much. I've had pastry and dessert products with ube and I know the true ube taste and that was either faint or missing. I always love a good family business that shares their passion and family tradition with others. This place serves the most delicious donuts I've ever tasted and the owners are some of the kindest people I've ever met! I came on a Saturday around 8:30AM and there was a long line outside. That just proves how good this place is. The wait wasn't too long- about 10 or 15 minutes. They had every option available and I ended up getting 3 donuts. An Ube donut, vanilla frosted and glazed. All have such a delicious and cakey taste-not too sweet. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because the prices haven risen substantially. I understand that may be because of the pandemic, but I do miss the old prices. I want to see them continue striving though so I am still willing to pay for their delicious donuts! This place won the best donut at Donutfest 2016 Illinois for a donut they call Ube donut. It's a purple color donut that is made with this Ube root. The Ube donut is really good and taste like a really good cake donut. They also have a bunch of the regular donuts such as long johns, Boston Cream, glaze twists, apple fritters, etc. One of my favorites are the maple bacon long John donut. The key to the donut are the dough. It taste so fresh and fluffy and fresh. Most of the non cake donuts tastes so good they remind me of a Hawaiian bread but not as sweet. I came across this establishment through an article talking about specialty donuts. I can't remember what article it was and from where right now but anyway, I decided to check it out after I looked them up on Yelp. This was my second visit. My first visit was last year I believe. They have good tasting donuts. They are homemade. Their specialty and claim to fame are Ube (Purple Yam) donuts. They are pretty good. They have won awards and got recognition for those Ube donuts. Even Steve Dolinsky, the channel 7 (ABC) Hungry Hound show food critic and writer, has mentioned good things about this place. They also have regular donuts like chocolate glazed long johns, old fashioned round donuts, custard filling powdered donuts, maple bacon long johns and more. They also serve coffee and sell (in bottles) milk, chocolate milk, juice, and soda pop. It's a bit pricey place for a local suburban joint in that they charge $2.50 per Ube donut and the other standard donuts vary in price but I believe the regular price is $1.19. It's not bad in terms of pricing compared to those Chicago based fancy gourmet donut shops but in my opinion, for a place it is and the type of donuts they serve, $2.50 might be a bit much. $1.75 - $2 should be max in my opinion. But anyway, check them out if you haven't before. It's worth going here for their Ube and regular donuts. They are a popular local establishment serving good donuts variety. read more

This family-owned gem services the community while also affirming their own ethnic identity. Every time I go in, there are old veterans from our American Legion sharing coffee, and even helping make take out boxes. This is our go to place local doughnut shop when heading out to Milwaukee Park for a weekend baseball game...its in a strip mall with plenty of parking. As you walk in you were greeted with a smile and a hello. They were playing mellow music in the back ground. We're here for their weekend specialty doughnuts called purple ube doughnuts and yes they only make these during the weekend. This caky doughnut you can get different toppings such as plain purple glazed, glazed shredded coconut, toasted coconut, fruity pebbles cereal or glazed crush Oreo cookies!!!
