You can also choose milder taste for the dishes if you cannot prefer so spicy one. I firmly believe this is the best Indian restaurant in the Boulder area. I have yet to try something I don't like.Tikka Masala, Coconut Curry, Samosas Chat, and Korma Curry stand out as some of the best items on the menu, with lamb or chicken. My boyfriend loves the Chicken Tikka. Service can be a little slow sometimes, but it's worth the wait! The food is excellent as takeout too. I tried the lunch buffet a couple times, but I like my Indian food a little spicy and the buffet is mild (as it should be). So I usually just order my favorites instead. read more

I got tofu masman curry, garlic naan bread and cheese naan bread. The curry was okay- the veggies must have been blended because I didn't have any whole ones. The curry almost tasted like tomato soup. However, the cheese naan bread was amazing!!! They need to combine the garlic and cheese into one. Hand down the naan cheese made it worth the visit. I lived in India and Nepal for a bit, so my expectations for amazing Indian food are quite high. In the past, I haven't been super impressed with Gurkhas, but I wanted to write this review to applaud a recent dish I experienced from their new contemporary menu, the Mussels Vindaloo. When my waiter asked me about my spice preference, I insisted on "as hot as it gets." He delivered what I asked for. I received amazingly hot mussels served in a #13 spicy sauce. I guess when you order above a 10 in spice, they use a different kind of pepper, which was absolutely delicious. if you're a fan of really hot spice, I highly recommend this style of vindaloo. Since this restaurant is near my work, I decided to give it a shot and order food for take-out. Long story short, I will not order from here again. The website said to allow for 30 minutes before picking up take-out orders, which I did, but then waited at the restaurant an additional 15+ minutes, which is inconvenient, but not that big of a deal. The food, however, was terrible. Which was shocking considering how expensive it was. We ordered 2x chicken tika masala dinners and a kids chicken fried rice (and payed extra to add veggies). Then we had to pay for 2 orders of naan since it's not included in the meal. Total, the bill (without tip) was over $50. On top of that, the serving sizes were very small-to include tiny boxes of rice. The chicken tika masala was almost entirely a bland cream sauce, however, almost inedible due to the spiciness. We both asked for medium, which is typically a great balance of flavor and spice. This was like a level or two over medium, but we were actually a little happy since it masked the bad flavor. The kids chicken fried rice was $10! That was since we paid $1 extra to add veggies. It was a small container with 95% rice. We could barely find and chicken or veggies. At least the flavor of the rice was better. Maybe they were having a bad night, but I won't be wasting my time or money to find out if that was the case. read more

Okay, I admit I am biased. I will be their bartender soon when they have their bar open, after remodeling. Although I don't work for this restaurant as bartender yet, I can give you an idea of what the food and the experience is like because I dined here 5 times now in the last month, twice for dinner and three times for the lunch buffet. I love the place, and the people--they are really good people, down-to-earth, real, and try their best to be of benefit to the community. They regularly donate. Now let's get down to business with the food. I have eaten at Indian places many times. Gurkhas tandoori chicken is best I have ever had. If more people dined here, it would be the most famous thing, in my opinion! The chefs keep the food at fairly mild levels of spicy so if you prefer zesty or spicy excitement in the flavors, ask for it. Don't order it mild then become disappointed that it's more bland than you preferred. Actually nothing here I've tasted have been bland, with the authentic flavors preserved by chefs who are often recruited by other restaurants. (Being a Mongolian, I know that Mongolian food is NOT spicy and I would disappoint many Americans if I opened an authentic Mongolian restaurant, haha.) So here at Gurkhas, you have authentic Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan food (BTW, "chow mein" another Yelper referred to, is actually Tibetan tukpa--less oily, more chewy). This means it's a variation from different regional food experiences that you associate with "Indian" cuisine, but the chefs will totally cater to your needs. The food may err more on the side of rich, like the saag paneer. It is still a delicious treat. Oh, the naan in all its flavors have also been highlights of my experience here. If you are lucky enough to be there when they have goat available, try it! Especially if you like lamb. The chicken chilli is by far one of the most delicious dishes ever--if you have any complaints after ordering this particular dish, come see me personally at the bar, and I'll treat you to a drink. As you yelpers may well know, the best time for a buffet experience is at the beginning of the shift, which at Gurkhas, is 12 PM. I've eaten lunch buffet at Gurkhas at 12 PM, 12:35 PM, & 2:30 PM. The food did suffer a little bit more at 2:30, but not by much... and people ate up the food fast enough so that they were all pretty fresh. (For the people who work in Gunbarrel--Gurkhas is beginning to deliver a lunchbox at a very reasonable price of $6! It's not yet advertised.) Anyway, if you're doing buffet middle of your work day, eat one plate. If you eat more, the food will be rich enough to put you asleep with all your energy going into digesting the food. (Especially if you are diabetic or are sensitive to sugar highs and lows...) Alright, I tried to be totally honest to my experiences here so you know that even though I'm biased, you can rely on what I write here. If you will allow a plug-in, come by after we have the bar open. I plan to put 1/2 of all my tips towards improving Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar's air quality, and funding my nonprofit that will be preserving, cleaning and reforesting areas that have been robbed of its natural resources. I really enjoy this place. The staff was very friendly and the service was very quick. The dal soup was excellent and had such good flavor. We had the momo dumplings as an appetizer. They tasted great and were cooked to perfection. The chicken saag had tender pieces of meant and the sag had a great flavor profile. Highly recommend the chai! We live just up the road and have been coming here about once a week for the past month, always for the lunch buffet. There are 2 main menus for the buffet, and both are delicious! One plate is about all we manage, plus the naan they bring out, it is so filling. There are waffles and fudge for dessert! I've been here five times, that alone should tell you that this place is pretty amazing. I'm surprised that the restaurant is close to empty all the time considering the food. The food is easily some of the best, if not the best, Indian food I've had in Colorado. The coconut curry is just spot on. The coconut is present, but not overwhelming, playing perfectly off of the chicken and accompanying curry. I've also had the tikka masala and samosas, as well as numerous other dishes. Everything I've had here is simply delicious and flavorful. In addition, the portions are plentiful and a great deal for the price. I have never been dissatisfied when coming here. Why this place doesn't have more business is beyond me. However, the prices are not cheap and the service is okay at best, considering how empty it is all the time. The price is expected though, Indian food is hard to find cheap. As far as the service goes, the food was slow, considering the lack of business they have. Gurkhas is one of Gunbarrel's little-known treasures. Having sampled the various Subcontinental fare to be found throughout Boulder County, I'm pleased to say that the best is just down the road from my house. Within the past year or two, the restaurant has revamped and redecorated itself a little, with a more modern look and the inclusion of more fusion recipes (tapas, desserts, etc.). Happily, these changes haven't come at the expense of any of the more "classic" options (Tikka Masala, Biryani, Samosa, etc.). And the new Mussels Vindaloo is one of the better seafood dishes I've had in a while. The staff is friendly and conversational. The house amber ale is delicious. Give this place a try if you haven't already. I hope that with all the new housing going up in the area, it'll be around for a long time. read more

My sister-in-law and I wanted to try something new and we found a winner! We shared the following: Samosa Chat (appetizer) - crispy samosa tossed with spices, tamarind, mint chutney & yogurt. Onion Kulcha (like naan). And two main courses - Goat Curry with onions, ginger & garlic, and Lamb Sekuwa - Nepali lamb with red onions, stir fried in a special sauce. All of it deelish! We decided to try Gurkhas on a Monday evening because the Indian restaurant we usually order delivery from is closed on Mondays. We'd hoped to discover a great new restaurant, but were sorely disappointed. First, the delivery service was slow and misleading in its time estimate. We placed the order at 5:36 p.m. The app indicated we'd receive our delivery through "Easy Eats" between 6:42 and 6:47. We were disappointed we'd have to wait an hour for our food, but decided that was acceptable. When I checked the status at 6:30, I saw that they had changed the ETA to 7:20. Then someone from the delivery service called, around 6:35, and said the food was on its way, apologizing because the restaurant was busy. The restaurant is less than 20 minutes from our house, so we thought okay, we'll get it at 7 pm. We did not - it arrived (not very hot) at 7:20, almost two hours after we first ordered it. And we were disappointed with the food quality. We ordered both Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikka Masala, but got two orders of Chicken Korma - they were exactly the same. Very bland tasting sauce. The saag was average. The lamb vindaloo was slightly better. We will not order from this restaurant again - will wait for Tuesday when the other Indian restaurant is open. read more

One might imagine I live to write poor reviews. Hardly. It's unbearable to work my a** off to earn a living, then spend that cash for poor service, worse food, and lose half an evening of my life. Gurkhas used to be good, really good. Two evenings ago we visited. The dining room was occupied by just 3 other small parties. 10 minutes after being seated, the server finally appears, offers water, and we request Lassis. 10 more minutes, the Lassis materialize, and we order. The Lassis were good, but slightly warm. A warm Lassi is always...weird. More than 30 minutes later, after other diners arriving after us had been served, had finished their meal, and were rising to leave, 2 samosas arrive. Before these, I never met a samosa I didn't like. These were awful, soft (rewarmed?), unevenly seasoned, sharp-tasting, yucky. Next, the buttered naan, after just a couple minutes became cold, and brittle, as if it had been prepared previously, and just warmed up a bit for us. Also the first naan I've ever disliked. The worst dish, by a mile, was the chicken pakora. Indescribably awful. Dry white meat chicken, surrounded by a vile, offensively-sharp, coating. I'm a piggie. I'll find something to like in most foods, and consume it, while others watch and cringe. The food was, that evening, was essentially inedible. Even the daal would embarrass Progresso. The neighborhood is in a temporary slide with the terrible Bogey's, the sliding to oblivion Cafe Blue, and now the seeming demise of the once-great Gurkhas. If you can handle some insanely slow service (we're talking a turtle trudging through molasses), then definitely go here for the amazing food.
