Seafood gumbo is tasty, free salad. Fajita plate was great well prepared skirt steak on a bed of nopales fried beans Mexican rice and salad. My wife's jumbo shrimp we prepared well. We weren't planning on stopping here because from the way this place is advertised you probably wouldn't stop. However it's a twist of authentic Mexican food along with Cajun seafood. We enjoyed and would come back. Beats the fast food places for sure. read more

Terrible service they brought out one small basket of chips which we quickly finished. Never asked if we wanted more though the wait staff walked by many times. Had to go to register to ask for check. Food was not all that. Crawfish was good Étouffée was good Fried shrimp has more corn meal than there was of the tough shrimp. My family and I were passing through Refugio and came across this little restaurant. 5/6 of us ordered something with shrimp and none of us were impressed, they tasted like chemicals, rubber-like, and the breading was in corn meal. Needless to say the meal was very mediocre and afterwords those five people including myself felt sick. I wouldn't recommend eating here. read more

If you are passing through Refugio this is somewhere that you really need to stop it doesn't look like much, but it's worth going inside and checking out the menu. read more

It is always nice to stumble upon a decent restaurant when on the road. We were impressed with Gumbo's food and service. The chips and salsa are definitely above average and the restaurant offers a very do able salad bar. My gf and I would absolutely return if hungry in Refugio again. Give it a try. read more

Right about halfway point from Houston to South Padre/Brownsville and great find if you want to stop for a meal more than a fast food stop. More Tex-Mex than Cajun at least on the part of the menu we ventured. The Michelada was deliciolso with Corona Lite. Lots of seafood on the menu and the grilled shrimp was fresh and tasty and blended well with rice, avocado, jalapeños and homemade tortillas. Right on the main drive too. Expensive and food very mediocre. Ordered the tex mex plate fish shrimp fries and hush puppies. The fish had no flavor. The shrimp were ok. The hush puppies were burnt. (Overfried). Overall after a $60.00 check for lunch for four, I'll stop at whataburger next time. Service was not great either. Cashier was busy. read more

I'm working near Refugio and stopped in at the El Gumbo around 3 PM. There were no other customers. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very friendly. I tried the fried shrimp and it was delicious! I plan on going back again and trying some of their other dishes - they obviously know how to cook good seafood! read more

Very sweet and helpful waitress. Food is decent and the salad bar was good. The Refugio Platter is the bomb.

Stopped in passing through town...wanted something other than DQ and whataburger! Initial service was great. The food was the real deal and fresh. Had the shrimp po'boy. Previous review was right, the salad bar was a nice touch and clean and fresh! There was a lot more than just seafood on the menu too! After weeks of watching workers put the final touches on the old Sonic building, my wife and I were excited to come to the opening of The Gumbo Seafood. Pulling up to the restaurant, we we greeted with an awkward parking situation. One side of the restaurant is really much too narrow to fit cars for parking. Park on the north side. Entering the restaurant was a pleasure. You'd never know it used to be a Sonic! The main lobby, although small, is well arranged and well lit. We were seated promptly by a smiling waiter. Since this restaurant is a hybrid seafood/Mexican place, chips and salsa were served - standard fare. We also enjoyed a cup of complimentary gumbo before our meal. It was delicious, but we don't know if it was a permanent thing or just a promotional thing. The menu is a bit large. Your standard seafood starters are there. There's a Mexican seafood bit, a plain seafood bit, a simplified Mexican bit, and a small American menu (burgers, etc.) They also serve breakfast in the morning. Prices seemed reasonable. We went for some calamari as a starter. Just your standard good, fried calamari. The tartar sauce it came tasted more like dressed up mayonnaise, though. My wife and I split the Broiled Platter - a tilapia filet, four shrimp, and a skewer of scallops on a bed of rice and a few mixed vegetables. It wasn't earth shattering, but it wasn't bad, either. The fish tasted very fresh. On the way out, we grabbed a slice of Mexican cake (tres leches?) Simply delicious, and worth the 2.99 price tag. We'll be back! read more

Stopped here on a road trip to Houston. First impression--clean, neat space. Menu--several seafood selections, plus some Mexican items. Service was very prompt & attentive, the kitchen was extremely quick. I could see the kitchen pass from my table, & could see that the staff was working in a very skilled & expedient manner. The food was fresh & tasty. My husband had the shrimp po-boy, which was filled with freshly fried shrimp. I had the shrimp enchiladas, filled with perfectly cooked shrimp. Most places use a creamy sauce with their seafood enchiladas, but these were most likely their "standard" enchiladas, just filled to bursting with fresh boiled shrimp--no sauce other than the usual queso/chili gravy on top. But it worked. The shrimp flavor shone through, unmuddled by creamy sauce & cheese. I thought they needed a little seasoning, but that was fixed with the salsa on the table. Rice & beans were also hot & fresh. We will definitely stop here again on one of our frequent trips up this way. read more
