Carne Guisada, two eggs over easy, potatoes, refried beans and flour tortillas.
    Rob R.

Now this is real Mexican/Texas Mexican food like what I ate growing up. It's always these small town restaurants that have the best version of Texas Mexican food. Nothing fancy. No made up, watered down or remixed versions of good old Tejano food. It was breakfast time and I was traveling through, so it was a blessing to be the first customer early in the morning. I ordered the carne guisada with two eggs over easy, potatoes and refried beans with flour tortillas. This is how I know whoever is cooking grew up in Texas or learned how to cook from a Tejano. The carne guisada tasted like my mom or grandmother made it. I went to town on it and before you knew it, I was cleaning the plate with my last piece of tortilla, just like I would at home. Not to mention the salsa verde was hot! The coffee kept coming and the waitress didn't let my cup dip beneath halfway. The restaurant was quiet when I entered but soon was packed with the hustle and bustle of peopl getting their morning started with a hearty breakfast. If you are ever in Refugio, TX and craving a hot, hearty Mexican breakfast the Tejano way, you can't go wrong coming to La Ribera! P.S. They are Dallas Cowboys fans, so you already know!!! How bout them Cowboys!!!

Very welcoming place. Friendly staff and Good fresh food. On our way to the valley we stopped in for breakfast. I Had the migas and asked it without onions but they put onions in it. Didn't eat much of it but it was ok, the beans and homemade flour tortillas were the best as were the potatoes. On the way back home we stopped in again and I ordered a crispy tripa taco which was ok. Not much flavor to it and in a flour tortilla but ok. I prefer a corn tortilla with tripas as well as cilantro and fresh onions, with lots of limes. Came plain. I also ordered a carne guisada Gordita and that was good, very tender and flavorful meat. My friend ordered a ceviche tostada and that was plentiful and tasty. She also ordered the carne guisada plate which was good. The chips and salsa were great. The sweet iced tea was on point. I would recommend giving it a try. Reasonable and plentiful. Will stop by again to try something else.

As a vegan, that made me excited because actual Mexican food usually has less cheese and can be made vegan. The business is quaint. There was a friendly hostess to welcome us in and our server was very hospitable. We ordered the chile relleno without cheese, zucchini in pasilla pepper sauce, and mole verde off the vegetarian options on the menu. We also enjoyed guacamole and chips. Our server was happy to accommodate our vegan modifications and it was really easy to communicate with him. The flavors are just WOW! Hands down the best guacamole of my life. The sauces are vibrant and rich. Everything tasted so fresh. And the prices for this quality of food cannot be beat. My husband and I literally licked sauce off the plates to make sure we did not miss one ounce of that authentic Mexican flavor. This place is top of our list of businesses to visit next time we are in town visiting family. We had an incredible experience and cannot wait to continue to explore the vegetarian menu options.

I'm not a professional food critic, but I do know seasoning, regional Mexican flavors, and what well‑prepared food should taste like -- and this just wasn't it for us. The restaurant didn't feel well-kept, and it appeared that only one server and one cook were working, plus we and another couple were the only ones there. We were served chips and salsa to start. The salsa, a taquera‑style orange sauce, was actually the best part of the meal. The chips, however, were extremely hard, not fresh, and definitely not warm. They looked house‑made, but whatever they were fried in made them almost inedible. I ordered the ribeye street tacos, and the steak was overcooked, had an odd taste, and wasn't enjoyable. I asked for extra cilantro and onions, which didn't happen, and the chimichurri they brought out was basically oil with a few seasonings floating in it. I almost complimented the Dr Pepper because it had a unique sweetness -- until I realized why. The red glass had visible staining on the inside. When I wiped the rim with my napkin, it came off dirty. They also don't offer straws, so whatever residue was in that glass is what you end up drinking. Between the food quality, the cleanliness concerns, and the overall condition of the restaurant, this was a no for us. How this place has earned such high mentions is honestly beyond me.

We were seated immediately and given menus - the menu is huge, and contains lots of breakfast selections as well as favorite Mexican lunch/dinner items. We ordered a beef taco salad and a cheese enchilada plate along with sodas to drink. We munched on complimentary tortilla chips and salsa (fiery) while we waited for our food. The meals came out quickly, large portions and tasty beans/rice. The taco salad had a crisp shell with more beans/beef than lettuce, but guac and sour cream plus cheese. The enchiladas were good, not quite hot enough to melt all the cheese inside the tortillas but they had a good flavor. Service was very friendly and efficient. Total for two entrees, two sodas was $34.16 before tip. By the way they charge a 3% upcharge for using plastic, so be aware.
