The horchata was the tastiest I have ever drank and the fresh homemade tortillas were total perfection as well as their flour tortilla chips, frijoles, and flautas! The iced tea comes in a huge glass and is fresh and tasty. The service is excellent but you have to seat yourself. Standard lunch type place, no frills. Now this is real Mexican/Texas Mexican food like what I ate growing up. It's always these small town restaurants that have the best version of Texas Mexican food. Nothing fancy. No made up, watered down or remixed versions of good old Tejano food. It was breakfast time and I was traveling through, so it was a blessing to be the first customer early in the morning. I ordered the carne guisada with two eggs over easy, potatoes and refried beans with flour tortillas. This is how I know whoever is cooking grew up in Texas or learned how to cook from a Tejano. The carne guisada tasted like my mom or grandmother made it. I went to town on it and before you knew it, I was cleaning the plate with my last piece of tortilla, just like I would at home. Not to mention the salsa verde was hot! The coffee kept coming and the waitress didn't let my cup dip beneath halfway. The restaurant was quiet when I entered but soon was packed with the hustle and bustle of peopl getting their morning started with a hearty breakfast. Very welcoming place. Friendly staff and Good fresh food. On our way to the valley we stopped in for breakfast. I Had the migas and asked it without onions but they put onions in it. Didn't eat much of it but it was ok, the beans and homemade flour tortillas were the best as were the potatoes. On the way back home we stopped in again and I ordered a crispy tripa taco which was ok. Not much flavor to it and in a flour tortilla but ok. I prefer a corn tortilla with tripas as well as cilantro and fresh onions, with lots of limes. Came plain. I also ordered a carne guisada Gordita and that was good, very tender and flavorful meat. My friend ordered a ceviche tostada and that was plentiful and tasty. She also ordered the carne guisada plate which was good. The chips and salsa were great. The sweet iced tea was on point. Thanks to Yelp, we stumbled into La Ribera and were quickly served. The highlights of the meal were; HUGE Tacos for less than $2, Nopalitos con huevos and the homemade corn tortillas are TO DIE FOR!! Driving home to Houston, we were thrilled to find such a wonderful spot for delicious and authentic Mexican food! Skip the chains-eat here instead! The food was outstanding-we especially loved the homemade corn tortillas and the fresh green salsa. We were there for breakfast-I had chilaquiles which had a really yummy, smoky and spicy ranchero over it, served with smoky delicious refried beans and potatoes. Husband had eggs, bacon, and pancakes. His eggs came with the wonderful warm ranchero sauce on the side. The pancakes were really tasty as well. The carne asada wasn't one I'd order again. It was tiny chunks. And not tasty. The bacon one was good. The rice was good. He had huevos rancheros, a carne guisada taco and a barbacoa taco. Huevos rancheros...potatoes could've used more flavor and cooking time. But the eggs were good and the beans were just refried beans. The barbacoa is authentic. But the winner on his side was the guisada. Tender and great flavor. Iced tea tasted like water. They were out of corn chips so we got flour. They were interesting in a good way.
