Don't want to call it a problem just wish they'd cut(scored) the back of the flounder so the batter wouldn't just come off. I know some will say there ain't much but there's enough to eat and not waste. The salsa needs a lil extra few peppers/kick but eh still good. Love this place and the people. We had appetizers and drinks and were happy with everything. The jalapeno margaritas have just the right amount of pepper for me and I usually need more but not here. I went to eat lunch and I got ignored by my server. The lady brought me a menu and asked me if I a was eating alone or with other people. I told her by myself, apparently she did not like that. After I answered her, she never return to take my order, I saw people come and the same server help get seated and take they order...they were are large party of people. I guess I was discriminated being a party of one. I went up to pay for my drink and told Manager, he didn't charge me, but he didn't care of what happened to me in this so call restaurant. I told Manager that I sat at table for over 13 minutes and not a single server came over to take my order or asked if I needed anything. Was on our way back to South Padre Island from Houston. The staff were friendly the food was full of flavor and fresh. Many different options from seafood to Mexican. I have the good fortune to live in South Texas, the undisputed home of Tex-Mex cuisine. There are many places that do a good job, too. There are a few places that do phenomenal plates. Some do fajitas the old-fashioned way. Others do unbelievable things with avocados and mangoes. GUMBO DOES CHEESE ENCHILADAS. When my plate arrived everything was bubbling at the edge. The folks in the next booth over could smell the delicious aroma of my lunch. The cheese, the gravy, and the beans combined to form a symphony of delicious flavors. The homemade flour tortillas were from a special corner of heaven. I have the good fortune to travel between my Aransas Pass home and my daughter's home in Goliad and I usually plan to lunch at Gumbo for their cheese enchiladas. Try them. Stopped here based upon the pretty decent reviews. We were just passing through town on the way back from the beach. The staff was very friendly. That's probably the best thing I have to say about this place though. It also could have been much cleaner. The establishment was kinda beat down. The fish did not taste very fresh and we didn't end up finishing everything we ordered. What we ordered was the boiled tails crawfish gumbo and the stuff fried shrimp. Each of our meals came with a "salad bar". It wasn't much of a salad bar. Just a food prep cart with a few items to build a salad. Everything seemed pretty fresh except the completely yellow broccoli. The stuffed fried shrimp: it came with fries, hush puppies and garlic bread. The stuffing was supposed to be crab and shrimp but it basically just tasted like turkey stuffing. The fries were your typical frozen French fries. The hush puppies tasted good but we're super oily. The garlic bread had no garlic taste. Just tasted like buttered bread. The boiled crawfish gumbo: it came with rice and garlic bread. This tasted very fishy and not fresh. It was hard to get down. The seasoning on it was flavorful though. Same complaints about the garlic bread. Overall this place left a lot to be desired and I do not recommend the stop. Just keep driving through. Got home a hour later only to find 2 containers of juice with a little rice and shrimp with no chicken. Looked like they were about out and stuck me with juice instead of telling me they were out. I got the cheese enchiladas and they were actually pretty good I was shocked about how a seafood place that also had a lot of Mexican food options was pretty top notch. Our server was good too very friendly. My boyfriend got the gumbo and some bacon wrapped shrimp that was spicy but he enjoyed it. The chips and salsa were not to my standards. Halfway decent restaurant right on the main drag in Refugio. Clean inside, friendly and prompt service. The food was.....alright. I ordered one of the specials; broiled talapia w/ 6 shrimp, rice and garlic toast. The real stand out of this dish, oddly enough, was the rice! Great seasoning, fluffy, big chunks of peppers and onions. But, the shrimp and fish were a slight disappointment. The flavor was good, just small! The shrimp were about a size "medium" to "small," while both talapia fillets would've equalled ONE regular-size fillet. Again, flavor was good, just not enough. The little bowl of clarified butter helped. The garlic "toast" wasn't really toasted, more like Texas toast with garlic butter. My wife, however, ordered the broiled shrimp kabob and her shrimp were HUGE! So, lesson learned, DON'T ORDER THE SPECIAL. All in all, it was worth the stop. Prices were very reasonable. So you're passing through Refugio and hoping that Yelp can deliver something decent. Well, look no further and get ready to stretch your legs, because this place is pretty damn decent. Hell, by Refugio standards, I might even say this place is good. You will be greeted with a smile, chips and salsa. That I can almost guarantee you. You will also be very curious about trying their gumbo for some strange reason. I say go for it. No two people have ever had the same interpretation of gumbo, and while I thought it needed work, my wife was a fan. All of the seafood we tried was very fresh and the service was excellent. You will be pleasantly surprised when you find out that your meal comes with a trip to the salad bar. You will then be disappointed by said salad bar. Good thing this place is not called the salad bar house. Bottom line is you will be in and out before you know it and ready for another 3 hours of driving. We stopped here for a late lunch on our return roadtrip to Houston from Corpus. We got the Sunday lunch special which was shrimp and fish (don't remember the kind) with fries and hush puppies on the side. We also got a big bowl of seafood gumbo and the special came with an open salad bar. The food: The gumbo was great. Definitely the best part of the meal. We really liked the fried shrimp - wish we had just got all shrimp! The fried fish was just so-so. The salad bar was also nice with fresh veggies and and good options. The scene: The dining room looked very clean and well organized. The bathrooms were small but also clean. There were some TVs in the dining room so we could watch the Texans game that was going on during our meal. The service: Waitress was friendly and helpful. Food came out quick. All of the food was bland. I tried the gumbo, shrimp cocktail, and broiled fish (I asked for extra seasoning). They never refilled our drinks. I tried waving the server down for over 15 minutes. They are under staffed, so he was in the back. Paying was a nightmare. I asked 2 servers and they just walked away and pointed at the manager. He asked me to wait a minute and took over 20 minutes putting tables together and answering the phone. Customer service was horrible and the restaurant was dirty. Definitely not returning. read more
