Found this restaurant through Google Map and Yelp's reviews as we were driving back to Austin from South Padre Island. Reviews don't lie. Food was delicious. -Menudo (5/5) was full of flavor and so much tripes; fresh diced onion and cilantro along with fresh lime was chef's kiss. -Steak fajita plate (5/5) was huge. Steak was made well and tender. Rice was flavorful so was the received beans. Comes with some lettuce and guacamole too. -Carne asada taco (5/5) - very simple dish and the steak was the star of the show. Generous Portion of meat. For the price, this is a must. We even order 2 extra to-go! -Horchata (5/5) cheap and huge cup! Great flavor! Overall, it was a good choice for our stop during our road-trip. The folks here are very friendly. Service was quick. Taqueria Vallarta absolutely deserves 5 stars. The food is fresh, flavorful, and comes out hot every time--tacos are loaded, the carne asada is perfectly seasoned, and the salsa has the right kick without overpowering. Portions are generous for the price, and the horchata is legit. The staff is friendly, fast, and attentive, constantly checking in without being annoying. The place has a laid-back, authentic vibe that makes you feel comfortable as soon as you sit down. I'll start by saying the food is great. At least what I've had is. It lost a star for time and friendliness. I've gone multiple times now, once just for chips, queso and a tea. They take what feels like forever no matter what you order. For the above order there was no line and only a few people sitting at tables. It took them nearly 45 min. Maybe they had to melt some cheese. That's the only thing I can figure since I watched as everyone who came in and sat down after me got chips and salsa immediately. I ordered 4 potatoe egg and cheese breakfast tacos the time before and it took almost an hour. For their regulars, they are all smiles. For everyone else they frowned at them, me included and look at me like I am an idiot for perhaps not ordering ahead. Moral of the story, if you're not eating there; order ahead! read more

Make sure your chips are fresh. I saw them toss old chips back into the container with the fresh ones. Truly freaked me out from comfortably snacking on their salsa and chips. Should NEVER be reusing chips... Anyways. My review is based on maybe the last 7 times I've been there the past year. This place is nowhere as awesome as they used to be. I grew up going here while camping at lake Corpus Christi, this was pretty much the only place we'd eat at. But since coming back here, it's struggling. Last year we tried like 4/5 times before finally giving up on them. The flavor just isn't there, they gave me some foamy nasty drink instead of a strawberry licuado the last time I went, the salsa was super salty lately, and it's just overall not worth it anymore. My daughter and I were in Mathis for a wedding and we had stayed overnight at a hotel in town. We had run into the Mathis H-E-B to get some things and asked some one "local" the best place in town for brunchy food. He quickly said Taqueria Vallarta. Locals usually know the best places to eat and I love Mexican food morning, noon, and night. Taqueria Vallarta serves Jalisco style Mexican food to be honest I've got to educate myself on Jalisco because its delicious. This little restaurant was packed but smelled so good when we walked in. There wasn't a clean empty table but the waitress said they had just been slammed with their morning rush and she quickly cleaned a table for us, brought us chips and salsa. I'm a salsa fanatic and usually will not come back to a place with terrible salsa. It really had great flavor. The menu had so many great options to choose from nothing overly priced. I ordered the Lady Plate it was just over $5 but had plenty to offer - cheese enchiladas, a hearty chalupa and a crispy taco. My food was fresh and full of flavor the tortillas were the best. So good! I just drank water so I cannot comment on any other beverages. My daughter ordered a torta with I believe barbacoa, which she said was the best she'd had in a long time. The waitress was very attentive and checked on us not to terribly bad about bugging us as we enjoyed our food. As we sat there the atmosphere was amazing. The staff was busy helping customers and getting their restaurant back in order they were very quick about it. If I ever have the opportunity to be in the vicinity of Mathis I would definitely stop in. read more

Anyone that reads my reviews, knows that I have a criteria that you must meet when it comes to Mexican food in order to garner a five star review. This restaurant was a unique find a night trip back from Corpus Christi on a late Sunday evening when everything else was closed. The chips and salsa are very good the restaurant itself is older but clean the wait staff was very attentive and the menu has many choices. I noticed a couple downers had hamburgers and they look good but I'll stick to what I feel is their best asset I ordered the everything plate. For $7.29 you get a delicious enchilada a very substantial Chalupa or tostada whatever you'd like to call it, a highly seasoned, taco rice and beans plus guacamole. That my friends is the difference between a four-star restaurant in a five-star restaurant. I said it many times before and I'll say it again if you're charging more than eight dollars for a combination plate of Mexican food you have price yourself out of the competition. It's a great little Mexican food restaurant in Mathis great stopping point if you're traveling. Beans are great which is one of my pet peeves in a Mexican food restaurant anybody can make enchiladas but it takes a real good cook to make really good beans and really good Mexican rice and they have both. The service is great and the food was just as good. What a nice surprise. This is our first visit to this restaurant. The service we received was the best we have had in a long time. All the employees are genuinely happy and work well together. Our server Jeannette greeted us as we entered and quickly seated us. She seems very organized and attentive. Our food came out rapid fast and very delicious. I highly recommend this place if you want good autentic ("authentic" for the Non-Spanish speakers) texmex food. The salsa was delicious. Ordered our food in the drive thru and parked where they asked us to park to wait for the food. Only for them to serve the 9 cars after us before us. Everyone got their food and left while we just sat there not being tended to. We finally got out of our car and had to go inside to ask what the issue is. They forgot our order completely. Stopped by here from South Padre because it was whispering for me to come in. It's like I died and went to heaven where they only serve authentic Mexican. That there is food for 1 person. I repeat. .1 person! You want to know how much it was? $4.99. That's right, you read that correctly. .4.99. The steak was seasoned very well and it was juicy too. The rice? Omg fluffy and delicious. The refried beans were definitely not the fake kind, they were delicious and textured. Last but not least, was that delicious enchilada filled with I tasted to be cheese and Mexican magic. This place is 7 hours from Dallas but I want to pack all my shit right now and move into this restaurant. The servers were super sweet and kind and answered all of our questions. This is the more consistent Taqueria in town, always a pretty good meal at a reasonable price. Our most recent trip was more of the same, as the breakfast tacos were great even at 9:00PM. Everything else (rice, beans, quesadilla, flautas, chips) was pretty good, and everyone left satisfied. Their buffet is the best in town, so if you are in town for lunch and super hungry, get there. read more
