I had a guitar set up with these guys, and the setup was actually great so no complaint with that! However, they said they would contact me when it was finished which did not happen, and I wound up having to call them to find out it was done. Wouldn't have been any big deal except the interaction on the phone asking the tech about it felt defensive, like he felt I was accusing him, which I wasn't. Then I got to the store and asked the guy at checkout and got the same feeling. Like my statement about not getting a text was an unreasonable point. Anyway, an awkward interaction, BUT I got it, and all is good. I think it's best when dealing with customers to just try hard to assume best intentions. I somehow ended up feeling defensive by just commenting that I didn't get a text. Like "why didn't I get a text?" That's innocent, right? I think so. In their position I would have said "I'm really sorry about that. We sent a text, and it didn't go through. I hope it wasn't too much inconvenience." Boom, done. Anyway, this all seems so silly as I'm saying it, but it's honestly annoying to feel like I'm a problem when I don't think I did anything wrong. There are a lot of options out there, and customer service is quite important to me. In fact, I'd spend more for it. It's a niggle, but its important to me to feel welcomed. read more

I've been a customer of Guitars Etc. for some time. I purchased a Martin D-18 here and discovered a crack in the finish when I got home. Todd offered to look at it but I never brought it back -- I didn't want to be a hassle. That's the kind of customer I tried to be. I later special ordered a left handed Taylor 12 string as a gift. I honored that purchase even when my circumstances changed and I no longer needed the guitar. When I reached out 4 months later asking if he'd consider buying it back at a fair price, I was met with a week of silence. When he finally responded, the negotiation ended with an offer of store credit -- at roughly half what the guitar was worth. When I asked if he would do cash instead, I'd still be a customer and spend it there in the near future, he said he wasn't looking to buy, citing his own accounts payable situation as the reason. I was a returning customer. A Taylor 814CE in left handed was on my radar -- if it could be built that way, that conversation would have happened here. It won't now. Small businesses live and die on customer relationships. I understand cash flow is real. But so is loyalty -- and so is a straight answer. I was never a difficult customer. Not once. I needed some work done on one of my older PRS guitars. I have had Todd and his guys set up for me before so I brought it to them for the fret work. It was reasonable, done in 3 days, and my guitar rings and sings like new. I played my whole set with it and ...wow - tone IS everything! I've stopped in several times in the past two years I've lived here and picked up guitar gear and books. A few months ago I started taking lessons. There are several instructors for guitars and I've seen other instruments. The instructor I have is awesome. He's helpful and very positive during lessons. It didn't take long for Todd, the owner, to start greeting me by name. The staff are very friendly and helpful. On customer service, when I said I wanted to pick up a couple of effects pedals, Todd did't point me to what he had. He wanted to know my price range and then volunteered to bring in a couple that would work for me. They have a good selection of books, mostly guitar but there are bass, drum, and piano books. There is a fairly large selection of guitars both in diversity and number. They also have effects pedals, amps, mics, stands, and drum gear. Recently I came into a few bucks. After checking the Internet and friends that play, Todd let me try amps he has in the store. I checked the amp after getting home checking reviews and prices. Todd's price wasn't much more than prices on the 'net so the next day I stopped in and picked it up preferring to support my local businesses when possible. read more

I recently bought my second guitar from Guitars etc. Both times the experience was exceptional, as well as when I bought various gear in between. Todd and his professional, and yes talented crew LISTEN first, then offer ideas. They took the time to understand where I was in my journey, then made recommendations based upon that. Never felt pressured. Never felt like they were trying to upsell me to something above my abilities, or pass me off to the first option to make a quick sale. Even though they are often busy (a good sign for a local business indeed), they seemed to be willing to spend as much time with me as I needed to try different instruments, answer all my questions (some of which no doubt were stupid, as I have been just getting started) and help me find the gear that was best for ME. I also started my journey with lessons, and found Tyler to be the consummate professional teacher... again, listening to what I wanted to learn, then guiding me towards my goals. Service after the sale has also been exceptional. I've made many stops by the shop when I was in the neighborhood, and have always been greeted warmly, and offered advice when I asked for it. The second guitar (a pre-owned American Strat) had a minor issue shortly after I brought it home, and they immediately took care of it, and it continues to play beautifully (at least as well as I can make it play). We decided to purchase a guitar for our oldest daughter this past Christmas and did some research on the shops around the north Denver area. As my wife called around to research the brands and models available one store stood out among the rest - Guitars Etc. in Longmont. They all were polite, sincerely helpful, and honest in our quest to find the "right" guitar for our young Taylor Swift fan. On my visit - Todd (the owner) greeted me at the door and spent the time necessary for me to choose the quality instrument I was looking for - little did I know that he was doing this after hours as the store was intending to close earlier that day. I must have spent more than 90 minutes asking questions, inspecting guitars, etc. never once was I rushed or steered toward their "special" to purchase. My ignorance of the instrument was treated respectfully and they took the time to demonstrate the sound differences in the guitars I was looking at. Needless to say we purchased a nice acoustic guitar and were well taken care of throughout the process. We came back and purchased another electric guitar and amp for my young son and were treated with the same care as our original purchase. As part of their Christmas purchase deal this year they included a month of lessons in a group setting with a rotating teaching staff allowing the class members to see the teaching style of each instructor. My kids picked their instructors through this program and signed up for individual lessons. I've learned much through the course of this purchase and highly recommend this store to anyone considering a new or used guitar. They carry everything from inexpensive entry level guitars to high-end masterpieces costing thousands. The staff is knowledgeable and sincere and make you feel appreciated every time. Sure you could drop in and ask all the questions you want and then purchase online to save a couple of dollars but why would you when you get a quality team like those at Guitars Etc. This place is fantastic. I mostly stop in to check out the high end acoustics, especially Collings. They have the best selection hands down for Collings in the front range. The staff is always incredibly insightful and really willing to spend the time and spread a ton of good knowledge about what they carry. Zero pressure from a sales perspective as well. They just really want you to find what's best for you and will make sure that happens even if you don't walk out with a guitar. I was in the market for a new guitar for a little over a year and had been to various other stores, playing a variety of guitars. Neither the guitars I played, nor the experience of shopping for them ever spoke to me. Decided to check out Guitars Etc. on my lunch break one day and spoke with Todd. I was immediately made to feel comfortable asking questions, explaining what I was looking for and my price range. Todd allowed me to play a variety of guitars, explaining the pros and cons of each. When I explained that I was only looking and wanted to take my time in making a decision he invited me back to play at any time. Over the course of 4 weeks I played a variety of guitars and finally decided on what I wanted. Although I've been playing for years I feel as though I'm still a novice and had been uncomfortable in some other stores, this didn't happen at Guitars Etc. I can't remember any other time where I felt so valued as a customer. The friendship that has ensued from just my first visit with Todd the owner has only affirmed that I made the right decision to frequent his shop. He not only is more knowledgeable than most, he can play his guitars as well as most. But don't expect him to admit it or make you feel awkward. My brother came up from New Mexico and Todd spent over an hour with us showcasing many products after listening to what he was looking for. My brother researched and knew what he was looking for but actually got something better and more suited after playing on all of the options that Todd's guidance offered. I poked my head into the store looking for a simple nut to replace a faulty one on my electric bass. Todd took personal and attentive care to my simple little issue and encouraged me to bring in the guitar so he could repair it free of charge. Walked into guitars etc intending to purchase a guitar for my husband for valentines day on a dead monday morning with my small well-behaved dog. The guy up front said we dont allow dogs in are store. No welcome,no how can I help you and by the way she might have been a service dog. I said to him why not? Buyer beware -- don't buy anything here unless you are 100% certain that you will not need to return it for a refund. We had an instrument out of the store for two days only, still in its sealed box, and Guitars Etc. would not refund our money. Their antiquated, customer un-friendly return policy is printed at the bottom of their receipts -- which of course is too little information too late, since you only get the receipt after you've already made the purchase. This unfortunately is a perfect example of why the big box stores and Amazon are putting small businesses out of business. While Guitars Etc may argue that they can't take instruments back in case of damage, in fact, they will take them back and give you store credit. So the only aim of their "sucks-for-you" no refunds policy is to keep your money. So be absolutely certain that you won't need a refund before you buy here or better yet, go shop somewhere with a modern-day, customer-friendly return/refund policy. read more
