I bring my brother here often and they have always been helpful and patient. They also have a great selection.

I called them ahead of time so that I wouldn't have to drive 40 minutes out for nothing. Asked them if they had an EMG 5-way switch for a strat guitar and they said they did and that they will hold it for me. I drive out and waited in line for a while and I saw the switch on the counter and it was not what I was looking for. Luckily I knew what it looked it and if i was a customer that didn't know what it was, they probably would've gotten away with it. When I told them that wasn't the switch I was looking for, they told me they didn't carry it and would have to order it. I basically drove out, spent gas, and came home empty handed. Went there, tried a demo guitar, loved it and when i bought it, it came in a box. As soon as i get home i open the box and the guitar is used(even though said to be new)and scratched, and it had some weird black gunk on it! If wasn't bad enough, the b and high e string did not play! read more

It's a great place. Even if you do find a cheaper deal on something (which I've only done once in 7 years),I can guarantee that you won't find somewhere that is more customer friendly. Really the only section I don't have any input on is the electronics, but the guitar, bass, and drum departments are all very helpful. Even if they don't have the instrument you want in stock, you'll find something just as good, better, or they'll order it for you. read more

Not surprised they have a low overall review. My wife and I went to purchase a keyboard for our kids. We were walking around for about 10 minutes with not one person asking us if we needed assistance. The two people behind the counter saw us looking however never made an effort to come out around the counter and lend assistance, so we left. I will be buying a keyboard from somewhere else. I put a $600 bass on layaway. Three weeks later I came back, from Stockton, to pick up the bass. They couldn't find it. I saw a bass that looked just like mine when I walked in, hanging on the sales wall. After a few minutes they "found" my bass. When I walked out, the "other" bass was gone. They had put my bass, that was on layaway with a payment, out on the sales floor, instead of the back. It was out where others could play it. This was a used, high end instrument, and there wasn't another in stock. I couldn't believe they did this, and I'll never return. read more

Came back to Guitar Center, Josh did a Great job on my Acoustic guitar, saw another Acoustic/Electric asked Josh if strings could be lowered, not intent on buying it at time, but he did such a nice adjustment job pretty fast too, put that on hold to buy/pick-up later. Thanks again Josh. read more

My wife works for a temp service and receives her pay on a debit card, Global Cash Card. About a month ago someone used her information to buy 1500.00 of studio equipment. My wife was at work on the clock at that time so there is no way she could have made the purchase, she filed all required paperwork with card company and their response was there was no error on their part and won't give our money back. She has talked to numerous people with Guitar Center Modesto and corporate. She has gotten nowhere with them. My wife is a drummer and I play bass we have bought a lot of stuff at Guitar Center Modesto. They are the ones who let someone other than my wife to purchase something without checking for ID or it was an inside job. We are being forced by guitar center Modesto to seek legal action. I am very disappointed in Guitar Center Modesto. I know a lot of musicians in the Modesto area and will pass to them my disappointment. Shame on you read more

I am sorry. I don't ever make reviews. I have Yelp simply to see reviews. However, my experience here was so poor tonight. I understand that customer service is a difficult and thankless job in many ways. I understand because I worked in customer service all my life: pleasing people isn't easy. However, there is something I do take notice and that is when I am treated rudely. I walked into the Guitar Center with my child who I want to get into music. This wasn't the place. Perhaps if you are an established musician or know the workers then you're good, but if you know nothing about music my experience tells me to never return here. The only person who was amazing was Jeremiah. He made me feel welcome and I'll tell you right now: appreciate that young man because he has the ability to sell and seems genuine. I wanted to look more into what he was saying, but the dirty looks I got from the rest of the staff while my son played drums for the first time made me feel offended. Take note: I am not one to ignore that children are annoying, my son included. However, closely monitored children (mine) that don't ruin merchandise and are not running amuck (mine) is a breath of fresh air when other customers notice. I can't help the noise, but neither can any drummer. I am sorry my two year old son isn't (insert Guitar Center Staff's individual favorite drummer; mine is John Bonham). I get it, the "looks" I claim can be subjective, but what really bothered me was that I stood in what I thought was the checkout line for a while making eye contact with staff for a good while (yes I was going to make a little purchase for my son), but they just passed up. They didn't acknowledge me, but they did acknowledge their friends. Yet, I waited and waited. I finally asked someone (huskier bald fella) who in his defense was busy, but I just wanted to make him aware that I wanted to make a purchase. My son was starting to become fussy and I needed to leave (I didn't feel comfortable by the dirty looks or the lack of acknowledgement). His response was, "Okay cool. I am busy though. They'll help you over there." (referring to the first staff I mentioned that was joking with their friends or possibly a big sale?). Well I had to leave. I don't mean to "Pretty Woman" this for you Guitar Center Upper Management, but I have money and my intention was to buy an electronic drum set from you and in the near future I was going to buy an acoustic kit. I understand that you don't have the best prices, but I like your setup. I used to come to this store when I was a teenager and I didn't have money to buy anything. I was treated way better then. Well, now I can tell you I will never give you my business. I rather support a local store or even Amazon. Thanks for showing me what I wanted. I guess you're a showroom if anything, so thanks for that. My suggestion is nothing. Entry level jobs will attract poor employees and you can't motivate someone who doesn't want it, so I sympathize there with you. You're basically doomed unless your prices are lower in the market place, which I feel it won't be. Bankruptcy will be your only solution. read more

Wow what an experience. Went in to look at keyboards. Saw a few I was interested in. A Casio PX160 regularly $499 on sale (not open box) for $399. In fact there were two on display. We asked about them and were told they didn't have them in stock. He (didn't catch his name) said the online price was the normal price so he couldn't order it and get it for the sale price. (Ok well not real happy but a great price) so I asked if he would sell me one of the displays. He said yes but he couldn't discount it further because it was on sale. (Sigh) ok well it looks like it's in decent condition. He says oh but he doesn't have the pedal. He then did go look around the store and found one. Then no power supply. And not a single Casio on display had a power supply. WTH? So I asked about a cheaper casio. It also wasn't in stock. So I ask this guitar center what kind of music store are you running? You just lost out on not only a $400 sale but the future sales for speakers and guitar supplies. read more

This store at 3440 McHenry Ave,Modesto,Ca...is the worst...the staff would rather flirt w/eachother and play air drums then get a price ...been there three times in two weeks and still have not been helpd...and was told the one time I did speak with someone and askd to speak w/the manager,Bill,was told that that's the best price your going to get and he doesn't have time to speak with you...I've spent Thousands at this store sense it opened...looks like Ill be going to SKIPS... read more

My son and I have been coming to this guitar center for many years. We are seeing a great decline in customer service and time waiting to even be acknowledged. We went there tonight to pick up a guitar from layaway, gave the clerk the receipt and then he disappeared. After about a half an hour, my son went up to a different clerk and asked what happened to the other guy who is getting his guitar. They didn't know. We told him we had given the receipt inside the warranty folder to the other clerk. He looked around and found it still laying on the counter so apparently the guy just took off somewhere and didn't give a crap about finding my guitar. In the meantime we went to the other department to look for a connector to connect from the guitar to the computer and the clerk looked at us like we were idiots and tried to make up some lame explanation about what we needed when it wasn't what we needed at all. These clerks need to step it up and get with the program. They are slow, lazy, unconcerned and lack knowledge. The store had so many boxes stacked in front of the ATM machine, I could barely reach it. The place was a total mess, just like their employees. They all need to be re-trained not only in their product but how to treat their customers. We won't be going back to Guitar Center Modesto. read more

My guitar has been here since July. I've been waiting for almost half a year to get it fixed, as one employee told me if they sent it over to Concord, it would take half a year for them to even touch it before actually fixing it. I went there a couple days ago and I asked how the progress was going with getting my guitar fixed, and there has been no progress at all, and the employee that I asked said that the information for my guitar still said that it was going to be shipped into Concord. read more

I had called before hand to see if a keyboard kit that my brother had seen online was in store. Sadly it wasn't but a younger guy on the phone was helpful in trying to pair me with another kit that was similar. After getting into the store later that day I was directed to the piano and keyboard section. There was an older guy by the name of Pablo. Let's just say we were clearly in need of some assistance and wasn't helped until we asked him 10 minutes later while he clearly saw us as he just sat behind the counter staring. He was extremely rude and did not sound like he wanted to work there at all. He was a complete jerk considering we just needed some details on keyboards since we were new to the scene. Definitely not coming to this guitar center any time soon. Bad experience and absolutely disgusting attitude towards customers who want to make fairly big purchases. Went in on May 1. Friday night about 5:30. I knew basically what was looking for and had a pretty good idea they'd have it there. I had to be very aggressive to get help and to get what I wanted. There was one person working the guitar department, a very nice young woman with platinum/grey hair and she did her best under horrible circumstances. Located near one of the busiest sections of town, Guitar Center in Modesto does a fantastic job of servicing musicians of all ages and levels of experience. Although it seems a bit cramped as you walk in, you'll notice that it has a wide selection and does a nice job of creating a professional atmosphere. Employees are well equipped with helpful knowledge of anything in the store, although they seem limited to their section of instruments. The walls of guitars stand out as a main feature, allowing for a variety of makes and models to choose from, while the floor is covered in amps. Another major point is their separated room for acoustic guitars, allowing for an isolated environment for playing and selecting your instrument. They have drum room that is large enough to house several full acoustic and electric sets, along with a separated cymbal room. Live sound, mixing/recording equipment, and keyboards are on one side of the store, but each section is big enough to give a wide selection of products. The only drawback is the bass guitar/amp section, which has been reduced to a small corner in front. Other than that, this is a top-notch guitar store that can serve any aspiring musician, recording artist, or general music needs. read more
