This store is a great staple of downtown tracy. My daughter had singing lessons here. We rent a saxophone, which is a great thing they do for the community and schools. This store has been in business for a very long time. However, I just discovered this place yesterday. I was shopping for an acoustic guitar. As soon as I walked in I instantly felt a really cool "vintage" vibe - the kind that makes you want to stay and look at everything (Opposite of a large retail music store). The staff was courteous, personable & genuine, and not pushy at all (no used car salesman behavior). A gentleman named Jake waited on me. He definitely has a high level of knowledge about guitars. He even changed strings on an acoustic guitar that I was trying out, just to make sure I was getting a fair playing sound from it. I ended up buying a different guitar - and he gave me a complimentary set of strings that I got to choose. It's been quite awhile since I've walked out of a retail business, where I really felt like I was legitimately taken care of. I purchased some music from the store and one of the sales rep refused to try the music in one of the rooms. They want me to play keyboards on the sales floor I used to live in SC and Delaware and received much better service there. Later on I had our Yamaha piano tuned from a representative from the same store. After he was done he said he had to glue the A key and would have to wait for a few days to play. Now I can't play the piano because the keys in the lower scales won't rebound anymore. I don't know where to find better service anymore. I now go to Guitar Center with better services and payment plans. Well, the experience I had at Tracy Music Store was poor. I would rather support smaller businesses if I can but big box stores is the way to go...sad how 'Times are a Changing'. read more

Lack of integrity, honesty, and courtesy. This is the best way I can explain my experience at Main Street. Teaching skills are lacking too, so don't expect too much if you send your kids there. My daughter's flute was making weird noises so I called and asked if I could bring it in for them to look at it. When we got there we were greeted by three friendly men that helped us right away. It took about 5 minutes for her flute to sound right again. No charge at all . It was something about a spring that I would have never been able to figure out myself! Came into the store and asked if I could have an amp that I wasn't getting sound from tested I was only looking for a 30 sec plug in and a strum of a guitar to see if it even worked, the owner asked if I had purchased it there I said no from GC online not wanting to drive to Modesto to have it tested and I get he has no obligation to test it for me I didn't purchase it there but he also proceeded to say why would I test it for then if you didn't buy it here I sell amps here. He also asked if I had ever purchased anything from the store but I told him I was there earlier that same day and purchased an instrument cable and headphones input adapter. Maybe that's why he caved in and said okay one of the guys will test it for you, I said no it's alright considering It was such an inconvenience for him and his staff apparently...I have heard good things about the store, even from a friend who has purchased instruments there and I decided to pick up playing the guitar not even a month ago I guess it just shows he only cares about the business of it, If I had to mention I purchased something for him to give the ok to test an amp. Probably forgot what enjoying music and playing music is for. Considering he got into the business of selling musical instruments too, I assume provide the same joy he might have felt once upon a time. The best music store I've been to in years. The guys are super friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. Very helpful, just recently had to take my daughter trumpet in because her mouth piece got stuck. They helped without hesitation and had it unstuck within minutes. They gave us a great deal when my husband wanted all 7 of his guitars restrung and tuned etc.. seriously I have nothing but amazing things to say about these awesome people! read more

My Dad wanted to get his guitar fixed, he took it to guitar center and they quoted him around $200, so he tried out Main Street Music and was quoted around $80, they ended up charging him $62! The piano teacher I've been working with is really nice and a great teacher but everyone else at the shop is sub-par at most. The guy at the cash register (maybe one of the managers?) is rude and and they fail to make accommodations for their customers. Main Street's got a treat that is one of the best locally owned music stores I've ever been to. It houses a quality selection of instruments as well as good prices, clean and organized environment and a warm staff. If it had a broader selection of used equipment it would be superior still. As I spent an hour or so experimenting equipment, several customers came in who clearly had a relationship with the owner Ken. You can tell he cares about everyone who walks through the door. A couple years back I went in to Main Street wanting to start playing guitar, not knowing what type was right for me nor knowing how much I should spend. The guys helped me choose the best guitar to learn on without breaking the bank, it took me about 5 visits to finally come to a decision, and I ended up buying the LAG T80DCE.. I couldn't be happier. A couple years later, playing guitar has become a huge part of my life and something I've become very passionate about. I recently decided to extend my playing to jazz, and again, over the course of a week they helped me choose out the best guitar I needed to start learning proper jazz, along with tons of tips and advice on how to get started. During my last visit, I spent 2-3 hours playing all the archtops I could get my hands on. Being 19, I'm not made of money, and they helped choose out the most economical guitar without "cheaping out". I bought a used Epiphone ES 335 yesterday, and I must have spent 5 hours jamming on it today. The guys will make sure you get the right instrument, and for a more than reasonable price. The staff are super patient and down to earth. It's clear everyone working there has a huge passion for music, and truly want you to reach your full potential. Because of that, this store has become one of my favorite places in Tracy, and I feel lucky we have them downtown. read more

I'm so lucky to have found this place. I'm older and wanted to learn guitar. I was hooked up with my instructor Brian. What a great teacher and talent he is! I still have a ton to learn, but he's gotten me from zero to playing songs in no time. He makes me look forward to Tuesday lessons and I would recommend him to anyone, beginner or advanced he'll make you better. And I have always been treated awsome from all who work there. This is our 5th year taking piano lessons with MSM. We are delighted with how much our child has learned from Mike and absolutely love the camaraderie we share with Mike, Ken and everyone there. They also hold annual music recitals in a very gently encouraging environment. So happy to have found this fabulous music school for our music lover. The school has now moved a couple of doors down the same street. You have to check it out! They've done a fabulous job bringing the classrooms way up front now and creating a larger seating area for waiting parents. Shows you how much they value their students and parents! I came in a few weeks ago to buy my daughter a ukulele for her birthday. Don't know much about this type of stuff, just knew I didn't want anything made out of plastic. Staff was super friendly and helpful in finding right ukulele and sheet music for my daughter. The Prices seemed reasonable and I was out the door with a nice Ukulele(which they tuned for me before leaving) a bag and some music for right around $100. I was happy and my daughter loved it! Absolutely love this place! Jason is amazing. He turned a regular electric piano keyboard in to a traveling one man band for my son. He had it done in one day and it cost next to nothing! We also had drum lessons there a few years back. My son grew out of the drum phase, but our experience while we were there was awesome! The instructor connected with my son and brought out the best in him. This place is a true asset to our downtown and community. I took my flute in there to fix a sticking E flat, key. They charged me $200. They called & said it was fixed, when it wasn't. It was still sticking. He handed me key oil, & told me to just keep pressing the key, til the oil went in. Didn't even change the pads. What am I paying him $200. for, if I have to fix it myself? Found out J.C. Avoid this place like the plague. They absolutely do NOT support local music or musicians. I buy approximately $10k in gear a year and play in local bands. I have gone to Main Street Music exactly 2 times. Each time all I got was a lot of rudeness, mostly from the older guy who appears to be the owner. Nothing but bad news every time I've dealt with them. Today the owner asked me, "have you ever bought anything here before"? I said no and then he said, "good, so I won't be losing a customer if you don't come back". Incredible! This was about me seeing an item they had listed on ebay last week. I messaged him and asked if they could stop the auction... (no bids yet) and I'd come down to the store and buy the item instead of going to Guitar Center. He said "We don't stop auctions once they are going". I stopped by the store today just to ask him why he wouldn't help me out (I live 1 mile away!). He said "we have integrity and that's the way we do business". That's when he added the "losing customer" quip. I don't particularly like going to GC but I can see that in this case the local store will NOT get my business....and I buy a LOT of gear. Think twice before dealing with this shop. This is a case of completely crap attitude towards a customer and in this economy not such a good idea for him. He actually believes that because I haven't bought anything there there is no loss in revenue? I guess he hasn't ever heard of "potential customers" or "word of mouth"?. No wonder business isn't booming there. Although I did see him rip off a mom for drumsticks saying they were 20% off while he doubled the price. Nice. So if you are school, church, or mom you'll get service with a smile as they double the price on anything they sell. A quick check of the jacked up prices on the wall items vs online or guitar center with your smart phone will confirm in a heartbeat. You've been warned. read more

I'm sure many people have had a good experience here and I know that the customer service is really good BUT I went in to buy ONE snare drum head. A Remo single ply coated ambassador drum head. On the box the price said like 29 bucks. That is just insane!!!! I can buy the same head at guitar center for 11 bucks!!!!! The MSRP isn't even that high on that particular head!!! Who the hell do these people think they are? Screw them for trying to screw people over. read more

I went here a few years back to get my flute repaired. I needed all the pads replaced which isnt that hard. I have seen kits and tutorials but I didnt want to do it myself. they told me it would be no problem so I left my flute with them. about 2 months later I get a call saying that the repair guy didnt feel comfortable replacing all the pads and that I needed to come pick it up. I finally decided to try this shop again for some books that I needed ordered. I went to go pick them up but even though I was told they were open for normal business hours, they decided to close early with no sign stating so. I thought maybe it was only one worker and they were in the bathroom or something so I waited. (only because all the lights were still on) I called to listen to the recording which stated they were closing at 7pm. google, their website and door sign all said 7pm as well. while I waited, at least 7 more customers tried to go in and all said they had called earlier in the day and were told they close at 7pm. after about 20 minutes of waiting I saw the back door close so I went to the back alley and rang the buzzer. all the worker could do was apologize. y'all could have at least put up a sign! lone behold I go to pick up my book today and it was the wrong one! I will never support this business again. I tried but they just dont seem to care about losing customers. amazon, here I come! read more

Being a monopoly to Tracy,... Main Street music runs rough-shot over Tracy residents. They are nowhere near the class and experience I have been accustom to. Being a professional musician, I had asked why Main Street asked for their customers to be "pro's" and pay their bills,... but yet do not ask the same of their "showcase musicians". I received no response and thus quit sending my children there after our daughter was extremely embarrassed by their "pro's" not knowing the verse vs. chorus. They are over priced,....in-flexible, and not very up to date or able to help serious musicians. As far as our family of musicians is concerned Tracy needs a quality music place, Main Street needs to realize what makes Showcase and Center what they are successful,..... here is a hint loyalty to customers not excuses... read more

I did not have a great experience at Main Street Music. The voice lessons went decently with Alex, however, when Steve took my credit card number to pay for the month of January, when I started, he said he would only run it for that month. I stressed to him NOT to run it for February unless I spoke that to him. I then reminded him about three more times during the month of February. The first week of February I noticed a charge from him on my checking account, which caused it to go negative! After a couple of times leaving emails and messages, he finally refunded me. However, I missed one class that my boyfriend paid for me in the month of January, and he had increased the class payment for an hour rather than half hour. I got sick and couldn't take the last class, which was part of my paid January classes. I called Steve and left a message that I wouldn't be there and could he call me about a make up class. I then had to call and email several times to have him respond. We had set the make up class up prior to him processing my card without my permission. After this happened in trying to get my refund back quickly, I emailed and left messages to just refund the last class for an hour. I felt that would be best after what happened. I am still trying to get my refund on my last paid class. Not good business practice in my book. read more
