Be careful about Gil. He tried to trick me when I was shopping for a Piccilo. A silver sells for around $800 and a nichol for $400. He said he had a silver for $600 and when I cam in to buy it, he brough out a nichol one and tried pretend it was a silver model. He is sneaky and he new exacltly what he was doing. read more

I walked in with my guitar to have a setup done. I was iffy about whether or not it was needed. After checking it out, I was told it was already setup great and didn't need anything else. I appreciated the honesty and as a result it's my new go to store for all things guitar related. I also asked about a guitar for my son and ended up purchasing a Fender acoustic for him. Visited here for the first time. Pleasantly surprised at their used selection, lots of nice guitars that are reasonably priced. Each guitar I picked up were all players too, well setup, tuned and ready to go. I had to really restrain myself from taking home a Stratocaster, lol. My guitar needed some work due to the D string was buzzing from the 2nd fret and upwards. Very annoying too! After looking for a local guitar set-up guy on here, found Gill's Music. I'm thankful too! They're updating their hours since school is back to regular hours and the kids need instruments to rent. Very friendly staff was greeted by Dominic who's very pleasant. I was told it could take a week since they're becoming swamped with their bread and butter of repairs and offerings to the local schools. So I was surprised I was contacted within a few days and they did a superb job of setting it up which it needed, badly. I've had my guitars set up at all of the "recommended" high end shops in the Bay Area including Gryphon strings. Dan at Gill's does as good a job if not better. He really listens to what the client wants and does HONEST work based on what the clients experience level/playing style/curiosity demands. He will also let you know if there is something he isn't comfortable doing and will recommend a luthier who will get the job done. Oh, and he won't make you wait A MONTH like some of the other shops, usually gets the job done in a week or less. I drive all the way out from Oakland to have my high end instruments worked on and it's worth it. Best of all, Dan is a really cool dude to talk to and will never sell you on something you don't need. You can tell he's in it to empower musicians more than anything. read more

I've been frequenting Gill's Music for a few years now. As a music teacher, I try to support local music stores, but it has been difficult in trying to find enough stock on the books I need. This past year in particular, I noticed a difference in that I was mostly able to find the books that I needed for my students. Books are more readily available (every so often on the days I couldn't find the books, it was only because they sold out and were waiting for a new shipment to arrive). The staff are fairly friendly and will assist you if you ask. There is usually one or two sales associates in the store during hours where there isn't too many people around, but after school hours can start to become a little more crowded depending on customer needs. I would like to note that there is an inconsistency in offering to place purchased books or items in a bag. For me, it doesn't make too much of a difference, but found it odd how sometimes I'll be asked if I'd like my books in a bag, which is helpful, and other times when the transaction is completed, I'm left to carry a stack of books in my arms from off the counter and back to my vehicle. On occasion, I am able to find a good deal, especially when I browse the red sticker books. The quality is pretty good. I sometimes find a book that has been left out and discolored due to the sun because of the placement of the product, but as long as the scores inside the books are unaltered and legible, I don't mind that too much - it happens and it's understandable. Other than that, they do carry many brands of primer level and beginner books as well as other supplemental books in note-reading, genres, and theory (I'm speaking for piano books in particular). Jeff Gill, the owner, is very friendly and really does care about customer satisfaction. Very down to earth, listens to the needs of his customers, and actually does something to fix any situation to make Gill's Music a more positive experience for anyone who walks through the doors. I appreciate the time he takes to make changes to his business by addressing our needs. My parents are currently taking lessons at Gill's Music and they're both enjoying not only playing again (Dad plays guitar and Mom plays piano) but developing friendships with their instructors. They have nothing but good remarks to say about their music lessons. For me, I just went into Gill's today to rent a trumpet, and I was in and out in all of 15 minutes. After doing a bit of price-researching and looking for the best rental deals down in the South Bay (where I reside), I discovered that Gill's rental offering was significantly better than most music stores. The rental agreement is also on a month-to-month basis, as opposed to other stores which ask you to commit to a 10-month rental. All in all, I left with a good-quality, almost new Bach b-flat trumpet in about 15 minutes. The rental cost is only $30/month and they threw in the cleaning supplies, valve grease, and slide oil for a few dollars more. I didn't get a chance to peruse their music sheet/book selection this time around, but when I went sometime last year, I know that my Mom picked up a few books. That means their selection must be good! read more

I recently moved from Fremont are to Antioch. I've been playing guitars for all my life, and I'm very particular about who works on my guitars, truth be told I let 1 guy do my work in Fremont. Well I took a chance and went and took my custom Shop fender telecaster in, (the warm weather here really effects guitars). I talked with dan a little bit and he was pretty happy about my tele and we hit it off. Super cool cat, knows his stuff when it comes to adjustments and guitars and horns and I'm sure many other instruments. Anyways, he did everything I needed in Shop, he had to go home on his lunch break to grab a special tool to tighten my truss rod on the neck. Meh... Kind of annoying they're always out of guitar strings... shelf is mostly empty. I ended up buying strings I normally wouldn't buy only because I really didn't want to make the drive to guitar center, and really needed a new set. The kid that was helping me was telling me how one set sounds better than the other and plays better... I asked if he plays guitar, he said no... so I said well then how would you know if its better? He said because he works at a music shop. (palm to face please) That means nothing kiddo... I've been playing guitar for probably longer than he's been alive. Kinda erks my nerve when people give advice for something they have no experience in.... anyways, apparently they weren't getting their next shipment for 3 weeks, so I bought the strings. I got the Elixirs acoustic Nanoweb phosphor bronze. I normally get 80/20 bronze because I like the bright/snappy tones. These ones are o0o0okay... more of a deep warm tone. Anyways, it's very overpriced... it was about $25 bucks for one set... you can get a 3 pack from guitar center for $27 bucks. But i'm impatient and didn't want to wait to order online or drive to concord. TBH I really wouldn't mind paying the extra cost if they actually stocked up on 80/20 nano bronze. read more

Took a 12 string, recently purchased from a garage sale, and my 6 string acoustic to Gills. They recommended to keep my strings on the 12 string. They tuned it up for me. They didn't force an unnecessary sale on me. I had a broken string on the 6 string guitar and they had it re-strung and tuned in a day. Thank you Dan! read more

The instructor stood up my son for a music lesson (Greg). The staff didn't even bother to apologize for the fact we drove all the way to the appointment only to be told "he's not here". Then, the owner I believe, was chatting with one of the workers about something related to "low-maintenance" and looked at me and said "you're low maintenance". WTF? Brought a flute in for minor repairs....said they would look at it and give me a qoute, it was there for over two months, never got a call. When I went in to check on it the repairs had already been completed and it was sitting in a pile of other instruments,...... Very helpful to rent an instrument and start billing you monthly......gouge you come and going if your child decides to stop playing instrument before 9mo contract is up. I paid a full months rental fee (even tho i returned instrument 1/2 thru billing cycle) and then pd another months fee for contract cancellation. They will pro rate u at the start of billing but not at the end. Dumb!! More like "why should we now that we already got u signed up"! Walked in to buy reeds for my daughter's clarinet. The guy on the counter was helping a customer with his guitar. We know which size of reeds and know exactly where to find it (all they need to do is ring us up). We waited for about 15 minutes or so ( no acknowledgement from any employee). If he had just said "give me a few minutes" we won't mind waiting, or if he says " give me a couple of hours to fix this guitar" i would't mind coming back...but since he decided to ignore us, we will NEVER come back!!! read more

This place blows. Went in for some percussion shakers, waited for the guy at the front counter to get off the phone, then he keeps looking down like he's busy. I was the only one in the store so I guess he had to look up eventually. This store looks like a little warehouse or garage, very drab. I asked if they had the shakers which they didn't then he looks down again. WTF! Can you believe I called here a month before looking for someone who teaches guitar theory, not just music theory, left my name and number but never heard from them. I have been going to Gill's Music for well over 20 years. There have been many different versions and variations of Gill's Music over the years with their staff and location, but the Gill's Music going on right now on Lone Tree is probably the best it's ever been. Dan is the man. I don't know if he's the main dude, but he should be. He's super knowledgeable, kind, and easy to talk to. He is wonderful at instrument repair and knows a lot about a lot of things having to do with music. I know Gill's rental prices are some of the lowest in the area, they have great teachers working there, they usually have most items in stock, and they have a great instrument repair man in Dan. They fixed her guitar for her because she wanted to play left handed instead of right, so the changed the strings and a few more things to it and she loves it. I've been frequenting music stores for 40 years. From small town Mom & Pop's to Hollywood's Guitar Center. Gill's is perfect. Individualized customer service, familiar friendly faces, professional knowledge and resources, reasonable prices. When my 11 year old said he wanted to play bass I initially got him lessons at what I thought was the established music shop. He learned very little. Then we went to Gill's. Jon found a way to teach and make it fun for an 11 year old! He's doing great. When he decided to play saxophone in the Sixth grade, it was a no brainer to rent from Gill's. In the past eight months, Dan and Jon have found a way to solve any problem, accommodate my schedule, and get even some big fixes done under the standard rental service plan.
