Guitar Center in Boston is a feels like a Musical Playground. They have hundreds of instruments for you to try. They are SO open to anyone testing out guitars, amps, drums, keys, etc. Last week I was trying out a new guitar. Aiden - one of the guys that work there - answered my questions then gave me an impromptu lesson on strumming patters. Dave and Mirabelle in the Guitar Repair department repaired and set up my guitars. They always sound sweet. And they accommodate my rush "jobs." Finally Davey who also works at GC has helped me countless times. He is so amused and patient whenever I come in and deliberate over which amp, guitar or picks I should buy. He doesn't hover. He helps me find what I need and leaves me to play with it. He makes me feel confident that I can become a the musician I dream of being.

Not to be confused with the Sitar Center which mostly sells Indian instruments, or the Bitcoin Center which deals in Kryptonite Currency, that which only Superman can't use. Much smaller than your average Guitar Center location, no doubt because Boston real estate is expensive, especially around here in a rich area. They have a lot of vital stuff but they're expensive as well, so it really depends how you look at it. I'd rather use a local place but sometimes this is the best option, especially in expensive Boston, where you're probably going to pay a lot anyway.

    Guitars and amps galore!

Huge inventory of music gear! Two floors and super friendly staff. They helped us with any and every question we had, and there was no shortage of belly rubs!

Guitar Center rear parking but must enter from the front entrance.

Exceptional service!…read more I was looking for a trusted, local luthier who would be both easy to work with and deliver honest, quality work at a reasonable price. I wrote off someplace like GC, knowing this wasn't their core business and unwilling to risk the higher probability of landing with a relatively unskilled tech who may only know the very basics of setup. Frankly, I didn't know if my guitar would need more than that but I wasn't going to find out the hard way, wasting my time and money or getting back a guitar that either wasn't fixed or wasn't fixed properly. I came across Kevin Chubbuck Guitars by phoning another local luthier, one who services/repairs acoustics and principally produces high-end handmade custom built acoustic guitars. He highly recommended Kevin, as a former employee who did fine work and one who had since moved on to further hone his craft before setting up his own shop and line of custom-built guitars. After a couple of email exchanges and a phone call to Kevin, I was convinced he was who I was looking for. After a quick review of my guitar, I was given a thorough walk through of the steps he was going to take to fully diagnose and correct the reported issue and explained the possible causes for it. Kevin even demonstrated how he was going to do the work with some of the tools he was going to use and why. Very reassuring and, for me, a worthwhile education. I really appreciated that level of detail. This wasn't just a drop-off, sign here, and see you in a week deal. It was engaging and very customer focused. I left Kevin's shop with complete confidence in his abilities and knowledge that I had found someone who was easy to work with and solely interested in doing only high quality work on anything he puts his hands to, be it an expertly crafted handmade guitar or a lowly setup on a Les Paul Studio. The work was done quickly and the type of corrective action that needed to be done was confirmation for me that I came to the right place. The price? Exceptional and no more than a routine setup would have been, despite the labor required to fix the underlying problems that would have prevented a proper setup. I found the entire experience a pleasure, I got to know Kevin a bit on a personal level, and he made me feel like I was his best customer despite being a new customer with a relatively simple and inexpensive scope of work. I would highly recommend Kevin to anyone looking for a genuinely nice, honest, knowledgeable, highly skilled and easy to work with luthier. Check out his site, his work, and be confident that he can take good care of your gear, regardless of the complexity of the work required.

He suggested I put in for a refund. I was not going to be the one to break the deal and I told him I was not interested in a refund, I wanted the instrument they sold me and was bought and paid for. A short time later, Paul tells me they looked all over and can't find it and sent me a refund anyway. They had the instrument when they took pictures of it and posted it on a Reverb two months prior! It was an oddball Electric Sitar/Guitar Did they think it might be rare or a prototype? Did someone offer them more money? Did they keep it for themselves? Did an employee steal it? I asked them to check with all of their employees and any surveillance footage, sales records, etc. If I had a music store and an instrument was missing, I would be raising heck! Especially something already sold, bought and paid for by a customer! I will never deal with this place again and I hope that no one does. Do so at your own risk!

Stop by again and he tells me it's not ready yet. Came by to pick up the guitar after two weeks of waiting to replace the strings. To my amazement it's now missing two knobs. Three words: Bait. And. Switch…read more They quoted one price over the phone for an alarm system plus installation, and waited until my car (whose make/model/year they already knew) was in their hands to tell me it would actually cost another $150. Theoretically it could have been an honest mistake, except that the guy who called to inform me of the price change never once tried to apologize, and in fact got very nasty with me for daring to have follow-up questions. Direct quote: "You're making a big deal out of nothing!" Okay, if $150 is nothing to you, why are you trying so hard to browbeat it out of me? I told him "It's not nothing to ME." His rejoinder: "Yes it is!" Customer service as delivered by the second-grade playground bully. Super. I wasn't fishing for a discount, and would have paid the higher price -- in fact now I'll be paying slightly more than he wanted, but for a better product from a place that treated me with respect -- but I WAS expecting some acknowledgment that it is not nice to tell someone one price over the phone and then charge a higher one later on. Mistakes are unavoidable; yelling is not. On that subject, interrupting the customer to shout "IT'S A GOOD PRICE!" again and again in a louder and louder voice does not make it true. That little customer service tip, you can have for free! Bonus round: When I mentioned Castillo's at a different electronics place, the guy working there winced and said their shop gets a lot of work undoing Castillo's shoddy installations. Obviously I don't have firsthand experience with the quality of Castillo's work, but that doesn't strike me as a positive sign, y'know? So take your pick -- illegal bait-and-switch tactics or garden-variety incompetence? Either way, these are not people I want working on my car.
