After taking a walk along the river, I was ready for coffee and just happened to come back along the street where Powell's Bookstore is (what a wonderful coincidence after spending 4.5 hours here yesterday). I wandered in to the bookstore and of course found another book and then forced myself to head to the Guilder Cafe with my new purchase. I got an iced vanilla latte and an almond croissant as a treat. The service was efficient and friendly even though they were quite busy. There were not tables left, so I sat on the mats they provide on a step platform. It was delightful because I love to sit on the floor criss-cross legged and read. And this gave me a great people watching vantage point as well. There were people working, reading, talking, and just being. It's a dlightful space and the coffee was delicious! The pastry was a bit dry and slightly overcooked but the flavor was fabulous and I ate the whole thing. Pastries at 1:30 pm are always a gamble I think. I would definitely go back and since I am here for a few more days, I might just do that - and next time try an espresso martini!

Last Thursday, I found myself at a Slamlandia Poetry Open Mic at the Guilder Cafe. It started at 6pm with an hour of open mic poets, then transitioned to the featured poet spotlight that evening, Nisha Patel. I was in Powell's City of Books and had stopped inside the cafe to see if I could charge my phone (there's only 1 outlet on one of the walls). I ended up getting a drink. The barista was friendly. I grabbed a seat at one of the tables. There are a couple of seating options - various tables, cushioned chairs, and like a tiered bleacher situation. All of a sudden, there were announcements that the event was happening. It was a free event, so I decided to stick around. There are very talented poets in Portland and, as an outsider observing, a strong community among them. It was cool to see and listen. So in addition to good drink and tasty food, Guilder Cafe has interesting happenings that take place. Another reason to love Powell's!

Given that there is even an option to get coffee in Powell's they are usually very busy, which is to be expected! Most of my experiences have been very pleasant here and I've even found it to be a nice place to do some work on occasion. They have vegan and gluten free pastries as well. The line is long on weekends in the summer but off season it's like any normal coffee shop with the bonus of being inside a bookstore.

This cute little coffee shop is located inside of Powell's bookstore. Husband ordered a latte and got a hot tea for me. What a nice convenience to have a coffee shop within reach of the books. They also had a nice selection of pastries and other foods available for purchase.

This cafe offers premium coffee! And it's locally roasted!! So much better than if they were another big chain shop. They do have a food menu, which is a huge deal considering it's extra effort on their end. What more could you want from a cafe affiliated-adjoined to a phenomenal bookstore? Plenty of seating, plenty of options, this is a 5 star place folks!

Totally recommend this spot! First off, love how it's situated in a previous bus shelter. It's such a vibe, and it's also perfect for a quick grab-and-go experience. We came twice in a day and appreciated how quickly they made drinks on the spot! The workers were very efficient, kind, and checked on us. My manager and I got a variety of drinks. We got the Black Sesame Cream Latte, Ube Latte, and Ssuk Latte. The Black Sesame Cream Latte is strong. The cream was super thick and creamy, and it was a struggle to mix and sip. It wasn't too nutty, but it was still good. The Ube Latte was good! It was very creamy; the ube flavor came through, and it was delicious. I didn't add any coffee, and it was perfect. The Ssuk Latte was my absolute favorite! It was so good, earthy, and herby. The milk added a bit of sweetness. It was my first time trying it, and I'd go back just for it. Less and More Coffee is such a gem for a quick caffeine stop! Find them off SW 5th Ave. for coffee, tea, and non-caffeinated drinks. I'd definitely come back!

This location has a different menu from the lesson and more to shop so make sure you're at the right place if you're in the mood for a specific type of latte. I ended up getting the hojicha latte and the tiramisu latte. I definitely prefer the hojicha. The tiramisu while good, tasted more like a regular latte with a thick, sweet cream layer. I wasn't getting too much of a chocolate flavor to it (obviously there was a good amount of coffee flavor). Will definitely have to come back for some of their other drinks. The black sesame latte is calling my name.

When I don't know what to do with my day, or I have work to catch up on, I go to Tov and go from there. Drink-wise, I often go for a Mucho Caliente, the "Mushit," a mushroom-based chai invention, or a Rose Mocha. I've had mochas all over and none compares to the way Joe and his staff concoct the drinks at Tov. The chocolatey-ness, viscosity, mouthfeel, flavor, sippability, sweetness, always satisfy my palate, and the balance of coffee to other flavors is always to my preference. Their drinks are decadent and may take a bit longer to make than expected, and I find it is well worth the wait. I enjoy getting comfortable on Joe's very colorful red cushions, taking in the purple Egyptian vibes within and the eccentric vibrancy that is Hawthorne outside. Fun fact: Joe doesn't believe in plain old ice, and instead he freezes cubes of milk! The cubes stratify into discrete layers that are fun to crunch through, reminiscent of the layers of baklava. Very enjoyable for someone who normally avoids ice or chewing on ice.

We stopped in here after playing a round at the Wonderwood Mini Golf. It had been hot and cramped and we really needed a drink. The door was being held open by a line of people and usually that is a great sign. Being busy is awesome for the business and I am glad they are so popular. It was a weekday, probably around 11 am and there were just so many people in line. It was really cute inside but SO chaotic. There were tons of kids screaming and at times it was difficult to tell where the line really was. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving, I started to get a slight headache from the noise and we agreed we would have to go somewhere else. It was probably for the best as all the indoor and outdoor seating was full so there would have been nowhere for us to eat even if we had braved the line. I think when a business reaches this level of popularity, it's important to put systems in place to keep patrons from feeling crowded and overwhelmed and it's definitely something they might want to look into in the future.
