BUT there are so many other things to try, I have been in Laredo for 4.5 years, and it's been hard to find a Mexican restaurant that reminds me of home (Arizona, California), this might just be the place!! If you've ever been to Laredo, then you've probably heard of Danny's. They seem to be on every…read morecorner, and maybe the most popular local chain restaurant. This is my grandpa's favorite place to eat. So much so that he received a generous $100 gift card. On a recent visit south, we ate here 2 times in a row: for dinner and breakfast. I've been here many times, a typical stop when we visit my 89 year old grandpa. As always, it's delicious and no one has any complaints. Now, a question that might be in the back of your mind is, do I need to know Spanish to eat here? Well, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have basic level 1 Spanish knowledge. Yes, our group was mixed dining here, but our server spoke Spanish the entire time to us. And sure, they know English (I think) because my ginger father orders in English and they reply in Spanish, he looks at my mom who replies to her in Spanish. And that's the way the world works when your vocabulary is limited. "Quiero café, por favor," except say it in the most gringo way possible (Key-arrow cafay poor faver)...it causes some giggles. I once briefly dated a guy who was entirely serious when he asked me "How do you say 'no' in Spanish?" In my mind I thought...is this a joke? He also asked me "What is ma-nan-a?" Ayy Dios mio! I can't possibly be dating someone who is of level 10 gringo status. Two years living in Texas, his sister married a man from Peru, his nephew's name is Mateo and you don't know a damn word in Spanish? Did he even know that Mateo = Matthew in English?! I believe in signs, and this was around the time when Jay-Z's song "On to the Next One" was a big hit. I heard it while in the car with him, and soo...you get my drift here. But seriously, if you're ever in Laredo, Danny's is the go-to spot. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, they even have a bar. Menudo is a hot commodity and only offered on Saturdays & Sundays. I ordered huevos a la Mexicana with rice and beans and their amazing hashbrowns. It's basically on the verge of being migas, minus the tortilla chips. But the real delight were the AMAZING tortillas. Perfect and just how I like my flour tortillas: not pale, browned spots and crunchy. According to my healthy almost 90 year old grandpa, the secret to long life is eating light meals, exercise and...Sprite.

Well the truth was we had not left any room number because WE HAD PAID AT THE BAR INCLUDING A GENEROUS TIP! We had to go to the front desk to fix THEIR ERROR (aka the bartender's error) and it was like pulling teeth to get them to admit that it was a whoops on their part. That incident made me knock off one star. It could have been handled better had the bartender admitted we handed him a credit card and he neglected to charge the card. Sad, because the bartender was actually very attentive... oh well.

Unfortunately, his experience was anything but welcoming. He had a difficult time communicating with the employee on the intercom because of the language barrier. When he finally got someone who spoke English, they explained that the order came with four tacos. When he went to pay with Apple Pay, the employee took his phone and then closed the window without immediately returning it. My husband actually had to open the window himself to get his phone back. According to him, everyone looked surprised or confused by what happened. Because we have experienced identity theft in the past, this was an immediate red flag for him. When someone takes your phone while you're trying to pay and then closes the window without giving it back, that's not something you should have to wonder about. Instead of receiving an apology or having the situation handled professionally, he was given three tacos instead of four, with only beef and tortillas no onion, no cilantro, and no salsa. After checking his order, he had to ask for the missing toppings and finally received them. As a Latina myself, I find this entire experience incredibly disappointing. If you're serving customers in the United States, there should be an effort to communicate with them and provide the same quality of food and service regardless of whether they're Latino or American. My husband went there looking forward to authentic tacos and left feeling uncomfortable and poorly treated. Based on this experience, we will not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to our family, friends, or followers.
