My wife and I were in Laredo for a Global Entry interview at the Laredo Processing Center. We drove down for ~3 hours since neither Austin nor San Antonio airports has openings until October and September, respectively. We have an international trip coming up in October so we wanted to knock this thing out as quickly as possible. OK, back to the review. Before we left for Laredo, we checked out recent articles for restaurants to check out and things to do. There were quite a few intriguing dining options but less with regards to appealing options for what to do. We checked out the historic district but, teeming multitudes of perfume stores and money exchange places, the area lacked any charm whatsoever. It actually felt like we were in Mexico. When we checked into our hotel, we asked the lady at the front desk for lunch recommendations and things to do. She couldn't recommend anything to see in the area but suggested Palenque Grill for lunch, which was on our list of possibles. Palenque Grill, located just off I-35, is quite spacious. We were seated immediately and served some warm and crispy tortilla chips with various sauces...loved them all but I preferred the spicy salsa while my wife loved the bean dip. My wife ordered the Pechuga de Pollo ($19) and I tried their Puntas de Filete ($21). My wife was surprised at how flavorful the chicken was, although she thought the veggies were overcooked. I liked the flavor of tender beef tips in that savory sauce. Loved the freshly made flour and corn tortillas. All in all, a good lunch option, albeit perhaps not the best value around. Pocket Gem I'm calling this a pocket Gem because it's sort of hidden between a bunch of fast food restaurants on a busy street. Everything around is fast food, so if you are driving by fast you'd never realize it's even here. What a fantastic place! I can't say enough about how glad I am I came here. Very inconspicuous. You walk in and immediately feel like you're in a high-end, classy place. From the lights and decorations you feel like you're in a special place. Everyone is dressed up, but relaxed and having fun. It's s white cloth type of place, and it was completely packed. There were several birthday celebrations while I was here, on a Wednesday night, and they had a solo singer playing the guitar and singing very beautiful Mexican music. I didn't understand a word of it, but he sang do beautifully and with his heart, you could feel emotion. There's also an elegant bar. When I walked in, as I was alone, I said I would sit at the bar but it was empty. I wanted to sit in the main room near the singer where everyone else was dinning. I saw so many great pictures of food here on Yelp and knew I couldn't try just one thing so I opted to get several small dishes. I got the tortilla soup, even though it was called something else in Spanish, and I got the ceviche appetizer. Bit were delicious. So they bring this plate of chips, salsa and dip to the table, and I've never had better than here. The chips were freshly made here, the salsa was delicious, and the dip was some kind of mix of beans and mole or something. I'm not explaining it well enough but it was really good. I was traveled to South Texas with a good of military students. This location also highly recommended by our colleagues from Border Patrol following our tour of the U.S. Mexican Border. Our group was seated in a small event room that accommodated us all comfortably. Drinks, chips, and salsa were out within minutes of us being seated. Our orders were taken by Angelo and Javier. These two took extremely great care of us, ensuring all orders were taken accurately, and all of our orders came out at the same time and was 100% accurate. The two were very attentive, and I don't recall running out of chips, salsa, or soda. The checkout process was extremely convenient, and Angelo and Javier did not apply to mandatory gratuity for such a large group. Even by doing this, they didn't solicit a tip, which made me want to tip more than what the standard tip was. On a trip to Laredo for work, I searched Yelp for a recommendation for lunch. Palennque Grill has great reviews and was close by my location. I am so glad I had lunch here. I arrived at 1:00 and the restaurant was busy but I was greeted and seated right away. My waitress was prompt with menus and drink order. Rather than the same 'ol chips & salsa, I was served a platter with tostadas, warm salsa & refried beans and chips. Such a great idea!! And tasty!! My meal was served with two kinds of salsa, pico de Gallo and limes. The meal was great but the service was even better. This restaurant is definitely my go-to place in Laredo. So every now and again I get this crazy itch to drive to Mexico which means driving through Laredo TX. Now I think we can all agreed that Laredo is not a culinary Mecca by any means however, there is a little company by the name of Palenque that is starting a franchise revolution down there. Palenque started out with a fast food taco shop concept that has now evolved to a more sofisticada restaurant serving usual Tex-Mex dishes but also authentic Mexican favorites. Palenque IH-35 is the flagship of the brand as as the flagship it represents the company very well. During my visit I kept things simple and started with the chips and salsa. They give you a creamy green salsa that is smooth with a subtle heat, they also serve a pico de Gallo and a red salsa that are both packed with heat. I followed that with the TACOS Carratoneros (chopped prime sirloin) and Tripitaka (beef tripe). The were all delicious served on fresh corn tortillas with onions and cilantro. Now they also have full entrees that look amazing and I hope to try those next time I am driving to Mexico. Last thing, the wait staff is absolutely amazing they offer a level of service levels (and I mean levels) above other franchises. From pulling the chair out for my mother to take her seat to folding our napkins every time we got up to making sure our table was spotless truly great service. read more

Best drive-thru Mexican food I have ever had. Hands down. Granted the options for vegetarians here are very limited, the super quesadilla I ordered did not disappoint! Wait time was only about 10 minutes from the time we ordered at the window to the time they brought it over to our car - we had to pull forward as they were making the order fresh. My super quesadilla included sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, two very hot salsas in red and green, and beans. They packed everything separately so it wouldn't get soggy on the drive to our hotel. Good thinking! It may have been the best quesadilla I've ever had - in a to-go box or otherwise! Then MORE salsa showed up, pico de gallo, avocado, regular salsa, and limes with a lime crusher. Then the posole. Broth is great, not greasy. The most tender pork I've ever eaten, lots of hominy. Cut radishes and red onion with lettuce on the plate. Delicious. Then the main course. Chicken enchiladas smothered in a spicy and citrusy sauce, plenty of refried beans and rice. So. Flippin. Good. Seated quickly, order taken and drinks arrived quickly. The chips were very good and come out with 4 different things to dip them in and pico. Pretty nice. The red sauce was pretty spicy. Ordered fajitas with shrimp. Took a bit to come out. Fajita meat was good. I'm not sure where they get their shrimp but they reminded me of how shrimp used to taste, very good!! Ordered beef fajitas and all it was was 4 tacos wrapped in aluminum foil that I could have had at their fast food restaurant and paid much less. The margarita was $11 and only drank 1/2 of it. It was HORRIBLE and didn't even taste like it had liquor - the server said I had to order top shelf to taste the liquor! No wonder NO one was sitting in their bar!
