Because we live in York and like to try new restaurants and support local businesses, and the fact that we LOVE Mexican style food, we wen to Guac and Roll and sat outside on a weeknight. Our server was very nice, but slow. Our table tipped back and forth, but I put a napkin under one of the legs to make it better. We ordered margaritas which took about 10 minutes to get and I ordered the fajitas and my fiance ordered two different types of tacos, one being a fish taco. We had wings for our app. I had read that the wings were amazing. Whoever said that must have ate different wings than we did, because ours were dried out and gross. You can get better wings at the Wing Bar at Hannaford Supermarket. When our food came it was immediately disappointing for me. My fajitas were black. I told my fiance, "I thought I ordered chicken, not steak". Turns out it WAS chicken, it was just burnt to a crisp, along with the veggies on the skillet. My fiance said his first taco was good, but the fish taco he spit out into his napkin because it tasted spoiled. They did take that taco off our check. Our second round of drinks took even longer than the first and we were done with dinner before they arrived (we ordered them when our meals came). We drank them anyway. From when our second round was finished to when we actually got the check on the table was about 20 mintues. It took another 10 minutes to get the credit card slip back. I was cold and getting annoyed, but I felt really bad for our server because she had every single outside table and her other tables were visably upset with the lack of service. I think the thing that sealed the deal on us never going back was that both owners were visible and doing NOTHING to help the server. The female owner was standing at the outdoor hostess podium chewing gum like a cow and laughing with the hostess and the male owner was walking around surveying things, but not actually helping out. Being a server in numerous restaurants in York in the past, I see this as a lousy way to run your business and don't want to fork over my money to them again. (I know they were the owners because the own another restaurant in town - which I also won't go to now - and their picture was in the paper when Guac n Roll was being renovated to open.) It was truly a awful experience from beginning to end. So for $100 for our app, 4 drinks total, meals and tip (we did not fault the server for the service), we've already spent too much money at Guac n Roll. Too bad - I guess Loco Coco's in Kittery and Margarita's in Portsmouth will continue to get our business. read more

In York this past weekend, and in attempts to be agreeable ( I had seen the reviews from yelp), when there was a wait at the place next door, we all thought we would give the Guac-n-roll a chance. Not going to be agreeable anymore. Probably should have walked out when our drinks took 20 + minutes (the table next to us did walk out). Or when it took 40 minutes to get chips and salsa, which wasn't even very good. They tried, but not enough. Food was sub-par (with exception of pulled port, which wasn't as pulled as it should be but at least had flavor.) I got the braised beef, which was seemed like it must have been out in the sun all day it was so dry. I would have asked for some sour cream that the waitress forgot, but the only time she came back, she spilled my friend's beer on the table, and I was slightly distracted. People, stand your ground. There is no reason to waste way too much vacation time, a half ass meal and money - Roll on by the Guac. read more

After a long day on the beach, we stopped in here to grab a quick bite and a couple drinks. Boy, was this place a dump! The restaurant was super tacky (not trendy) and dirty, the service sucked, the food was the worst Mexican food we've ever seen and the prices were completely out of line for the quality of food we received. We ordered Nachos and Fish Tacos- I picked at the tortilla chips because I figured those would be pretty safe to snack on, but, much to our server's dismay, we sent the tacos back. She wanted an explanation, but in this case, just looking at them made our stomach turn. I would not recommend this place unless your just ordering a beer- in a bottle! read more

Our server didn't come over for 10 minutes and was rude and impatient while I asked questions about the menu. The lettuce tacos were a joke. I had about 2 ounces of chicken in all three. When it was time for the check, she never came back to take our payment. I had to go to the bar and ask for her to run our card because we had been waiting so long and was only greeted with more attitude. I hate giving bad reviews but this place deserves it. Yuck. Ok, it's York and "Mexican" so I wasn't expecting very much. That being said, the one shining light from all of our Yelpers' reviews was the guacamole, which, I have to say, was close to the worst guac ever - lacked salt, cilantro, lime, etc. - the only thing it definitely had was avocado, and, at $8 with chips, I'll pass.. Drinks were an even worse bargain as my wife and I each ordered a margarita for $10 and $8.50 respectively. Hers was a frozen blackberry that was pretty tasty. Mine was the "guac" (read: "normal") and tasted like salty sour mix... ewww Regardless of taste, both were very small and extremely light on the booze. If I'm paying $10 for a margarita, I expect to at least have an inkling that there may be tequila in it somewhere... That being said, I saw other customers with food that looked/smelled good, but stay away from the guac and don't waste your $$ on watered down margaritas. read more

Tofu chorizio is stinkin awesome!!! Ok I dunno all these other people that have written here but it's been a long time since they have so lemme tell you. This place is awesome. First of all I totally respect a place that actually has Veggie dishes that are not only full of veggies but tastefully put together and ...wait for it.....isn't JUST as bunch of green lettuce. I can't say I was impressed by their coconut lime marguarita - they lost the tequila bottle for sure, but actually I was more hungry than drunk-thursty so I totally forgive them for the lack of alcohol. But ... But.... my tofu-rito was ahmazing! I had to buy a second to bring to home to share with my hubbie. When I got back to York (and oh I will) this the ONLY place I wanna totally visit and eat here again. Service was kind and gracious. Over priced and poor quality right on the beach front. Very obvious store bought salsa and guacamole, canned chicken in my $13 tacos which left out the salsa verde even though it was clearly in the description. The server was very polite and responsive to getting us what we were missing. Margaritas were basic and bland, when requesting a new one with a tad more tequila, it was better. read more

Went here two weeks back. . . Well let me rephrase that.....I tried to go there two weeks ago. It was quiet .... The door host and hostess were not friendly and seemed annoyed they had to bring me to my table. Sat there for ten minutes waiting for a server, saw about three different waitresses help out the tables around us, never once glancing over. The two door host who looked bored with nothing to do saw us sitting there without being helped and made no attempt to apologies or track down our server. Twelve minutes after sitting down I left! The prices were high (but that goes with the location) the food might be amazing but I never got the chance to try it. Totally disappointing and I won't ever try to eat there again. You need scuba gear to eat the tacos, dripping with water from wet lettuce and salsa. Water just pored out of them, they were completely soggy. Water and bread don't mix. How could a chef actually pass this as food? They were gross. The fish even tasted off. Bleh. read more

Starting with the hostess, no one made us feel welcome. Not kid or adult friendly. When the drinks that we ordered tasted like sour mix in toilet water and the chicken finger plate ordered for my grandson had 3 odd shaped chicken pieces, I was happy my grandson only ate the fries. Returned my drink tried another even worse. Glasswear looked old and dirty. Then our food was disgusting we had to get up explain our disgust and leave. Awful awful awful. This place was horrendous. None of the wait staff cared at all and the service was horrible. I'm pretty sure a manager was sitting about 5 feet away from us near the bar but that did nothing to improve the service. Slow and no personality. The food was the worst mexican I've had. We should have known right from the beginning. The chips and pick (which cost $5!!) were flavorless and could have benefited from salt! Our main dishes had no seasoning or taste! The veggies in my quesadilla were undercooked and my boyfriends burrito came right from a can. Waste of money and time! The staff obviously doesn't care. Looking for a place in York that was good for myself and the kids. The menu looked good and the prices were reasonable. We sat outside and were greeted by our waitress that looked completely overwhelmed. My kids wanted Sprite....out....lemonade.....out....another beverage.....out. Finally we figured out what we wanted from what was left. Most of us just chose water. We then ordered the wings to start so we could turn our attention to what meals we wanted. Guess what? Out of wings as well. We ordered the queso and chips which were decent. My son ordered the kids Mac and cheese that was barely passable as Mac and cheese. One daughter ordered kids beef tacos that had minimal flavor. My other dtr ordered cheese pizza and I ordered chorizo tacos for myself. My tacos were about 5/10 on taste. 5 min after our waitress took our order she came back and ask if anyone took our order. I said yes....you did. She said "oh yes, I remember now". She clearly forgot the pizza as my daughter sat for another 15-20 min waiting while all the other food came. She would come every little while and say it was coming but my kids were done by then and I waited for her food to come so I could then eat an ice cold taco. Overall, the staff appeared to all be somewhere in the 15-17 age range with no supervision. Matter of fact the table behind us was told that they didn't have their chips and salsa yet because their waitress was singing to a song she liked in the back. Upon leaving, the other table next to us was finding out their son ate a bunch of cheese in his tacos where they specifically asked for no cheese since he was allergic. His mother rushed him out to get Benedryl and/or his Epipen. All in all...go somewhere else. I RARELY post negative reviews for things but thought I should warn others of this place. read more

I should first mention that this rating is not a reflection of the food or atmosphere. The food here is very good, and the place is very well-decorated. Unfortunately, the service at this place was so subpar that no amount of good food would make me want to come back to this place. First, it took quite a bit of time for the waitress to come to the table for us to order drinks. We then ordered our food (I got the vegetarian nachos). When I got the plate, I took a couple bites but then realized the nachos seemed funny- it looked as though the nachos were made with meat. After about 10 minutes, our waitress finally returned, and I asked the waitress about this. She said she did not know, but she would check with the back. 20 minutes pass by with no sign of the waitress. Finally, the waitress returned and said that the nachos were made with meat and she brought vegetarian nachos. Unfortunately, by this time, the person I was eating with was already done, and I had just gotten my food, so my meal wasn't enjoyable because I felt bad that others had to wait while I just began to eat. Overall, the service here was so lacking (trying to get the waitress, or anyone for that matter, is almost impossible- I even witnessed people getting up and leaving altogether during my lunch because no one came to their table) that despite the good food, I do not recommend this restaurant at all. read more

Maybe because of the pandemic but now this place has gone majorly down hill. We went for appetizer and a drink and waiting over two hours after ordering. Never mind one hour of being ignored while seated. It was so bad and the food gross. The drink was the only reason I gave it a 1. And the whole time we sat next to a dirty plate that the servers kept passig by without clearing - gross and flies were galore. This used to be my favorite spot in York. They USED TO have hands down the best nachos and snacks (the nachos mamas or the jalapeño popper dip). We would come every year( sometime multiple times) just to grab the nachos. It's sad how downhill this place has gone. The nachos on our recent trip were so far from what they used to be. They had little topping and the cheese was barely melted, turning it into a plate of chips with unmelted shredded cheese, something we could have made in our motel room. After a not so great experience last year, my husband decided to give it one last chance this year. As we left the restaurant he said "Thats it. We're not coming back next year." I usually love Tex-Mex but this stuff was bad. My wife ordered a beef lettuce wrap which looked like dog food on a plate and from look on her face after a taste it probably didn't taste much different. She had one bite and pushed it away refusing to eat another bite. I had the chicken taco and it was like eating canned chicken on a tortilla, it was gross...the only thing tasty was the picante. If you like bland Tex Mex this is your place. If you love poco diablos [portsmouth]you'll hate this place. I started off the by the hostess texting in front of me and my wonderful family as I stood there for 10 minutes trying to get her attention. She rudely step away many times and did not answer until I got another hostess. I asked to be seated inside but was stuck next to the street where my small child would run into the road and almost get hit about 3 times. I was given no chips or dips. So we sat there hungry for about 30 minutes. I went to the bathroom where I found the scent of the left over fish tacos that someone didn't finish yesterday. I had to step over wet paper towels like a minefield in Vietnam. Finally my meal arrived. I got the chicken burrito that was not a burrito at all. It was more of a wrap that I could make at home. It was very bland and not very authentic. My wife got the steak tacos. These also were very bland. But not only that they were over cooked steak tips with feta cheese mashed into them. The Shell was stale and tasted like paper. All the meals came with chips. These chips were cold and stale with no salt at all. The waitress was externally rude and didn't take care of us. She never refilled our drinks or came to see if we needed anything such as napkins. Which were desperately needed for my 5 year old. There wasn't even silverware. This food is overpriced and unauthentic Mexican. Never ever go here. It's a waste of money and food. read more

Bartender had a poor attitude and called our party of 14 annoying. Rolled his eyes when we asked politely to be served. We confronted the "manager" who seemed to not even care that she was losing our business. Very unimpressed with the way this place Is run. The food comes out slow, and cold. Visited July 18th, 2010 and ordered a chorizo burrito, washed it down with the house mojito. The burrito was very tasty - great chorizo, well seasoned. Burrito ingredients were fresh with bright flavors. $1 add guacamole was a good idea - all of us at our table ordered some sort of burrito with guacamole. Steamed tortilla for the win! Also, the burrito came with chips which were made fresh and salty. The server was friendly, and insisted on asking how things were. My only complaint is that my mojito cost a whopping $10 (the burrito was $8). The mojito itself was sub-par - warm and ingredients out of preportion. Too much mint, too little rum, watery. read more

Went here with some friends over the summer. Wayyyy overpriced for what you get in terms of quality. Not helpful staff, hardly returned to check on things, could see the waitress outside laughing it up with other staff. For some reason the corn tortilla chips aren't gluten free? But it's not because of the fryer, the chips have wheat in them even though I've never ever seen corn tortilla chips that have wheat. The waitress was not very helpful when we asked about this, seemed annoyed. My wife and I stumbled upon this place after a day on the beach. I didn't have high expectations for Mexican food in York, ME but I was pleasantly surprised. We started off with some drinks, a Modelo Especial for me and a white sangria for the wife. I'm not a fruity drink person, but I tried my wife's and it was dangerously good. For an appetizer we split some homemade chips and guac. How can you go wrong with that? For my meal, I had the chorizo burrito. It was off the hook. The chorizo had some really nice char on it tasted like heaven. There was a bottle of hot sauce on the table and I was in heaven. The service was great....very attentive and on top of refilling drinks even though outside was very busy. I'll definitely be back to this place when we hit up York again. read more

I'm pretty torn on this one...they make some great food at Guac N Roll. The nachos are so good here and you get a ton! And they make some delicious fish tacos. It's pricy for what you get but that's the story for almost everything in York! It's missing that Mexican vibe that I like at most Mexican restaurants. But this is still go to restaurant on York Beach. I'm sure I'll be back! read more

Party of 2 at 9 o'clock on a Saturday night. Ridiculously hungry. From reading the other review it sounds like the service is really hit or miss. Our hostess and waitress were extremely kind and attentive. It was crazy busy but that did not mean we were neglected. Red sangria was good, not sickly sweet like knockoffs (a little pricy though). Guacamole was excellent, more savory than fresh or fruity tasting. Veggie burrito and veggie quesadilla were very good. Burrito had good spices and flavors while the quesadilla was super cheesy and packed with roasted veggies. Overall assessment: I would go back. It was priced for the food we got and the service was fantastic. Hope they get the service team to be consistent from now on. read more

The services was actually really good - there was a new waitress - maybe she hadnt been indicted into the bad service crew based on all the other reviews. the ritas were good...food was pretty good. i'd definitely recommend it for families with kids at the right time. The one weird thing is the bathroom how it seems like its in the middle of the kitchen. oh well...i'd go back and sit outside when my daughter is old enough. the place does have carpet and Chef Robert Irvine is 100% against carpeting in restuarants, so maybe they'll get a makeover and get hardwood or something at some point. I am a local and I love having great food nearby so guac n roll is one if my favorite places. I usually go for a quick lunch but last week I went to try dinner with some girls that had never been. Our waitress was Logan. She was amazing! She was quick and the friendliest girl ever. She helped my hesitant Mexican eating friends through the menu with some great recommendations and every single one if us had an excellent meal. I took a very short two day vacation to York, ME this past summer. The first night I was there, I was told the place to go for drinks was Guac-n-Roll so I went. The drinks were a little pricey, but worth it. I got a little hungry and decided, because it was late, I'd order just an appetizer. I decided on the nachos. The order came to my table very quickly and it was MASSIVE! I shared it with two other people and we STILL couldn't finish it!! Now I know that people go to Maine to enjoy the seafood, but, quite honestly, when asked by my friend where I would like to have dinner the following night, I yelled out "Guac-n-Roll!!!!!" We went and this time I was in the mood for a burrito so I ordered the Beefy Boy (which was also available on a whole wheat tortilla which I've never seen before at a Mexican restaurant) and again, it was fast and one of the largest burritos I have seen in my life!!! The only reason that I give this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 is because the female bartenders/servers seem to favor waiting on the men and, if you are a woman, you can wave, yell or even jump up and down while doing both and they will NOT come over to help you unless you're either there with a man or you just get lucky and catch them offguard. Both nights, different female employees, same problem. As a former female bartender myself, I do understand that women get better tips from men than from women, but the service should be the same for both. Still, this is a place that I will definitely go to again next time I'm in Maine and I would love to see them expand and maybe even open up a restaurant in the Boston area?? :) read more

Don't even bother coming here. Only reason it is getting two stars, is due to the quality of the food (tasty). The rest of the poor rating is due to the service quality. In one word, horrible. The waitress was rude to us the whole time. Got all our drink orders wrong, after they took forever to get to us. When someone ordered a frozen margarita, the answer was "our blender had been broken for a year." Come on management, you need to fix this. We won't ever be back. read more

Beer glass was dirty. Food was inedible and not prepared the way it said it was on the menu. Menus were made of paper and crumpled up and had very few options. The guac and margaritas are good but menu selection was extremely small. Tacos weren't impressive and I am not a fan of the shrimp tacos..they were the very small baby shrimp. Created a Yelp account to give my first review ever for this place. I will say the waitstaff were very nice which is why I'm giving this 2 stars and not 1 or zero. The salsa/pico de gallo was just awful, as was the guacamole. This made for a terrible start. My meal was ok (chorizo quesadilla) but the rest of the family's meals were also subpar. And on top of that they were out of handful of the beers on the menu as well as one of the mixers needed for one of their specialty cocktails they were featuring. Just an overall poor experience. We were up there for a night and couldn't have been more disappointed. Highly recommend you DO NOT go there (which stinks for the waitstaff but who wants lousy food on vacation). read more
