Mexican was my theme during a recent rained out trip to Ogunquit and Bandito's one of my several "reliables" in town. I'd discovered it several years ago and was reminded why it remains my favorite- sit down or take out. Vibrant colors are everywhere at Bandito - from the walls, the artifacts, the tiles lining the bar, the furniture and of course the food! The menu isn't excessively extensive but has the ethnic staples done right. My ingredient of this recent trip - mango salsa! Packs a punch in the burrito bowl especially with a dose of guacamole and hot salsa! Enjoyed my take out and always enjoy lingering at the colorful interiors or outside over a margerita! We chose to eat here to save a few bucks since everything else around is pricey and we weren't in the mood for anything upscale. In a high-rent area surrounded by expensive restaurants, it seemed like a safe bet that it would be a decent meal or they wouldn't be in business. It wasn't. We ordered enchiladas. The choices were chicken, beef, and cheese. I asked if I could get 2 cheese and one chicken and the waitress said flatly, no. Because they don't bring chips and salsa to the table unless you buy them, we ordered chips and guacamole. Both were insanely salty. The enchiladas arrived lukewarm - as was the rice and black beans - and had the vibes of airplane food. The chicken was from a can - similar in taste to the smell of high-end cat food. So two orders of (small portion) enchiladas, super salty guacamole and chips, and two bottled beers came to $75 before the tip. We felt very screwed and will not be going back nor recommending this place. read more

The fish taco was exactly what I wanted. It was my favorite. It was delicious. Nice and crunchy on the fried fish. The pico and salsa on it added even more flavor to it. I got the chipotle mayo on the side because I don't like chipotle, but I'm sure that would add even more to the tacos. The shrimp taco was really good as well. I wish they had 3 instead of 2 shrimp in it. We got the taco trio. The carnitas was good rich in flavor. The chicken was soft and had a lot of flavor. The steak was okay. Guacamole and chips were good. Their service was super fast for take out. It was warm inside when I went to pick up my order, but it was a 90 degree day. Very cute and colorful inside. read more

We ate there last week because it is one of our favorite restaurants in Ogunquit. I know some (negative) reviews mentioned shrinkflation, but I have to say, it seemed like the portions (in mid/late August) were bigger than they were in July (when we were last there)! Here's the pros and cons: PROS: Food is tasty. Meat (whether you get pork, chicken, or steak) is very tender and not too fatty. Mango salsa is excellent. You can't go wrong with the burrito bowls and classic enchiladas. Portions are generous. There's a good number of gluten-free options and staff seems knowledgeable about gluten allergy and ingredients. Staff is generally friendly. Lovely outdoor seating. Depending on what table you're at, you'll get a good peak-a-boo view of the ocean. They will often have tables available when places like Beach Fire have an hour wait. CONS: When they get busy, it may take 15+ minutes for them to even notice people are waiting to talk to a hostess. I don't mean waiting to be seated -- I mean waiting to talk to someone to see how long the wait will be and get on the list. Given how small the entryway is, it can get pretty crowded there! (Pro tip: If you wait more than 5 minutes and no one so much as greets you, walk out. It'll be too long of a wait to make it worthwhile.) Also, if they're busy, they won't seat a party of 2 at a small square table that can fit 4. It's unfortunate because those tables are crammed for 4 people, and it also means that your party of 2 will spend a lot more time waiting than a party of 3 or 4. Finally, their tipping system is nuts. The cheat-sheet at the bottom has run the math for a 20%, 25%, and 30% tip! It really should be 15%, 18%, and 20% -- with a 10% option on takeaway. read more

Very very good. Food is delicious. The ambiance inside is very pleasant, with quiet music. The outside seating looked nice too. We got: - chips and pico; very good - fish burrito (the fish is haddock): very good - traditional street tacos (ground beef, and shredded chicken): very good. Solid Mexican fare. Great people watching seating inside and out. Staff was super friendly, and food and drinks were on point. Cheese nachos and steak nachos was the theme at our table. I added refried beans and guacamole. Everything was very good. The Sangria was also spot on. It was large and strong, so be prepared. I didn't like that they charge extra when asking for another small cup of Pico and sour cream. I've never been charged extra for that anywhere else.....but this is what places do in touristy areas. I highly recommend Bandito's for good solid Mexican food. read more

Zero Stars. Ordered two shrimp tacos for take out. there were actually a grand total of two ice cold shrimp on them. The tacos were Raw, ice cold, in small pieces , and absolutely tasteless. There was hardly anything else on the taco . I cannot say one good thing about this. We also ordered a burrito which came with fries. The fries were ice cold and seemed like they were a week old. They charge you for hot sauce 4.50$ they charge you for small chips + salsa 5.00$ fajita with chicken was like charcoal. Put us at very small 2 person table near bar. Waiters brushing into us at least 5 times. Table wAs so small that when food came one of our drinks was spilled. They were not going to give another drink until I asked them to . Even though they moved the table to mop up the ice and drink. Needless to say we will never go back there. We have been there many a time. There were no bottles of hot sauce for free, like every other Mexican restaurant. Asked to be moved to diffy table. They said they were too busy. On top of it all the food was mediocre. We stopped by this place yesterday to find out when the best time is to stop in for dinner since they don't take reservations. The woman at the hostess stand suggested we come early, so we went around 445 today. We arrived at a fairly quiet and colorful restaurant. I asked for a table for 5 and was told we would need to sit outside despite the dining room being close to empty. We were told that they only have tables for 4 inside. What happens to parties of 5 people when the weather is poor? It had been raining earlier today, so we had to wait while the waitstaff dried off a picnic table for us... not what I was expecting. I went with it, and we sat down to order. The family split a nachos grande with chicken. It was delicious and devoured very quickly! For entrees, the family had burritos, and I had a quessidilla. My family members absolutely loved the burritos. Unfortunately, my quessidilla was not as appetizing. I ordered a chicken and portobello quesidilla, excited that Portobello was an option. That said, the quesidilla I got had minimal portobello, no chicken, and when felt like a lb of cheese. Cheese is included on the inside and out, but rather than it being a bit crispy from the grill, it was soggy. While my family may get takeout from here, I won't try it again. To make things worse, as we walked out, we saw a party of 5 people sitting on a table inside. read more

I wanted to love this place especially since it was so easy to get to from our hotel. It's a little weird when you walk in and the hallway was covered with water from the rain. We sat down and I think their seats are so uncomfortable. My mom got the fish taco which was delicious but if you want the things on the side you can't unless it's just one thing. I got the chicken fajita, the tortillas were okay but made my stomach hurt. They don't give you much rice or even food for the price. The chicken was good but spicy and the vegetables were good. I would probably try something else. But both of my son's loved their chicken tenders and fries. Overall I am not sure I would be back. read more

The atmosphere is vibrant and bright, but the table for a family of 4 felt very cramped and difficult to accommodate all. The food was edible, though the pricing seemed imbalanced compared to the quality of the food. $19 for meatless nachos, $11 for 2x glasses of milk, did not advertise that a side of sour cream would cost $2 each, my non-sizzleing fajitas came with the tiniest fajita tortillas on top of the food and wet. This place is a constant revolving door of customers. Great menu, good food, delicious company of strangers and right next door to the smoothy store, Love Shack. Great spot for a decent lunch - especially if you're sick of sandwiches & salads. The outdoor area is super cute & not too hot if you get there in the afternoon when the sun is mostly shielded by the big umbrellas. We started with the guac and chips, which were pretty good. I had the Baja shrimp tacos and they were okay too. Husband had a burrito and liked the salsa verde a lot & my five year old had a cheese quesadilla. The marg list looked awesome (hubs enjoyed his) As a pregnant lady who was missing her margs & mojitos, I loved that they were able to make me a virgin mojito (and put it in a regular cup so it felt like the real deal). Overall, not my favorite Mexican food but def good for a change of pace in the area. read more

On hot summer days I crave margaritas and chips with guacamole. Bopping around Ogunquit, I've passed Bandito's several times and finally decided to stop in on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Essentially, I got what I wanted (drinks and a snack outside by the sea), but in the most minimal effort on the restaurant's part as possible. This is why it's important to look up reviews of a place before blindly jumping in with both feet regardless of whatever your hanger and low alcohol levels are telling you. We sat outside on a cute, colorful patio overlooking the street, then beyond that a parking lot, and beyond that the faintest strip of ocean. Our table was a bit dirty, as was my water glass. My margarita tasted watered down; there was a scant amount of salt on just half the rim despite expressly asking for a lot. The chips tasted overcooked and under-seasoned, the guacamole felt like that stuff that comes out of the squeeze packages from the grocery store, and the pico was more soupy than anything else. I appreciated that the guac and salsa came in edible tortilla chip cups, though; that was a cute addition. The staff was neither friendly nor rude; just present. One weird note, though: within moments of sitting down, one of the servers immediately came over to us to take our menus away. We explained that we hadn't even looked at them yet, and he stood there staring at us genuinely confused about our refusal to give them up. Odd, right? Anyway, our actual server barely spoke to us; just dropped things off and picked things up whenever he whipped past. Wish I spent my money elsewhere. What they advertise and what they give you is way different. Food was luke warm and was gone in 4 bites. Spent my hard earned money at some crap shack I could've made myself 3 times over and had leftovers for what I spent. Portions were tiny for the abismal price I had to pay for that meal and then they have the cojones to charge $7 for a bottled beer on top of that. You cannot be in a rush. You will not see a server for ten minutes. This seasonal spot hires young and often inexperienced. Over Memorial Day weekend, we experienced long waits on drinks from a brand new bartender. Why would a manager hire a brand new bartender for a holiday weekend??? The folks working there are nice-- I've both eaten in and ordered takeout and the service time has a quick turnaround. Their food is okay. I've ate there a few times already since it's close to the beach and their menu isn't impressive considering how much I love Mexican cuisine. But if I ever want a quick chow and a drink before heading back to the beach, I would come here. read more

Let me tell you something, when it's 97 out and "it feels like" 104, a cold Margarita and Mojito are a most welcome reprieve from the streets of Hades Ogunquit has become during this heat wave . So yes, the drinks are worth visit, but, BUT, the food is pretty damn good too! Guacamole and Chips opener was excellent, followed by lobster tacos and the sautéed fish tacos which were sublime. If I could offer any counsel, the "mild" sauce was somewhere north or a normal medium - still tasty, but hotter than expected. One of my absolute favorite places to go during my vacation in Ogunquit. The food was fantastic and the prices were even better. The anchors they had were so tasty I loved it. Waited around 45-50 minutes to be seated which is understandable considering how busy it is , especially when the weather is perfect. The waitress who took our tables order then went and took a larger tables order as well as another large party indoors. Usually restaurants take one tables order at a time and then out them into the system. This unfortunately meant all our food was being timed and cooked with the other two large parties so we then had to wait about 15-20 minutes to get our food. What was really irritating was the waitress was talking and socializing and even sat down with a customer which I'm assuming is a friend.... If you are on the clock you are suppose to work, and be attentive not sit down and socialize. The food was good, but overpriced for sure. I ordered the Taquila Shrimp which came with literally like 2oz of brown rice,but for $17 to get 8 pieces of shrimped a salad of shredded romaine lettuce and 2oz of brown rice is a rip off. We had a great experience on our first night in Ogunquit! The staff was excellent with the mixed diets in our group, ranging from vegan to peanut-free.
