I get the hype! Who doesn't love the small-town ice cream parlor? All vaca towns need a spot like this. We strolled in off the main strip, and immediately thought the decor (including the seasonal Halloween decorations out front), was all great. A few picnic tables and chairs out front, and minimal seating inside. Friendly staff welcomed us, despite being busy serving more customers ahead of us. We browsed the many flavors through the glass... I'd say at least a dozen. From what I gathered the ice cream is Cedar Crest brand. How does one choose!? In the end, Elephant Tracks were the winner and boy was it taste. My two year old would also attest to this! We just got a cup and it was plenty, but they have your usual line up of cone options, including chocolate dipped (yum). Despite the ice cream not made in house, you'll also find tons of other homemade goodies here, including sweet and savor popcorn options, fudge (the dessert of Door County, I'd say!), a variety of speciality bottled sodas, and cotton candy. Every vacation town needs an ice cream parlor, and Grumpy's fits the bill cutely. Ice cream is Cedar Crest brand, I think about 16 flavors. All of it was very good. I'd say that their sundaes need to be a little smaller or else come in a bigger dish, because mine was an absolute mess by the second bite. About 10% ended up on my hands and table. Stopped here to buys two scoops of ice cream for two little granddaughters girls...one 5 and one 2! Children who look at ice cream and order with their eyes! We stopped by Grumpy's in Egg Harbor on a beautifully warm, sunny Monday afternoon. The wide selection of ice cream flavors was very appealing, and each of us considering a couple of options. The staff was attentive and quickly scooped generous helpings into our selected cones. The coconut explosion ice cream, which was coconut ice cream with chocolate chunks in it, was delicious. The elephant tracks ice cream was also good. Another in our party had the Mackinac Island fudge ice cream and spoke very highly of it. I enjoyed my Wisconsin S'mores ice cream, graham flavored ice cream with marshmallow and crushed peanut butter cups, in a chocolate and sprinkles dipped cone. Such a wonderful, tasty treat, and we enjoyed sitting outside under an umbrella, enjoying sunshine, fresh air, and flowers. What a great place! Al the owner served us with great hospitality and joy. We had ice cream and sat on the front porch. I had Cookies and Cream on a waffle cone and wifey had Mud Something on a wafer cone. We also ordered popcorn straight from the kettle. The best thing about the place was they have waffle cones dipped in chocolate with sprinkles. I asked for a military discount and the owner said no and she looked at me with a look that said, How Dare You. I was extremely offended. Not bec of not getting a discount but because it seemed like my service for this country offended her. Now I know why they call it Grumpy's. We were on our way to the market when we spotted Grumpy's across the street. It was calling us, so we stopped inside. Greeted warmly and asked about samples, the staff is very friendly. To the left, there is an assortment of flavored popcorn (the chocolate banana popcorn was spot on), and old school popcorn machine. To the right, assorted root beers and sodas (you can make your own 2/4/6 pack). Straight ahead, the ice cream. Make your way there. After sampling the deliciousness that was the Mackinac fudge (what remained, as there wasn't enough for a scoop), I ordered a scoop of Shipwrecked, which was vanilla ice cream with swirled caramel and splintered almonds. OMG IT WAS DELICIOUS. The sweet and saltiness of the caramel was PERFECT, combined with the slight sweetness of the ice cream... My eyes are fluttering just at the memory of it. We have a cottage in Egg Harbor and my daughter wanted ice cream. For some reason I'd never been to Grumpy's. It was cute and there were other treats like brownies & other Confections. I got a dish of the Shipwreck which had almonds, vanilla ice cream & caramel laced through it if I remember correctly. My daughter had a sherbert type thing called Superman & blue moon in a pretty chocolate dipped waffle cone. It cost $13, I gave a small tip, but it felt really expensive which bugged me. Other than that though, it was yummy and an overall great experience, which was the main point: to enjoy ourselves together & in Door County. As my family and I were walking to the door as a couple just exited, they locked the door and turned off the lights. There were a few more people walking up the sidewalk at the same time. My daughter tried to open the door and it was locked. I looked at my phone and there was 23 minutes before the posted close time of 9pm. I tried thinking she wasn't strong enough to open it and it certainly was locked. We then heard the employees then laugh through the open windows not realizing we can hear them. Grumpy's is a cute place. The ice cream is fantastic. It's Cedar Crest ice cream, made in Cedarburg, Wisconsin (so no, Grumpy is not out back,churning). The popcorn is also delicious and there were many great options. My favorite aspect - and why I would recommend it - is the outdoor area. Lots of outdoor seating, plenty of shade, beautiful flower gardens. After walking around, if you're looking for a nice place to sit with great people watching and delish ice cream, I recommend Grumpy's. read more
