What a great find in Tallahassee!! This veteran owned coffee shop offered some truly unique and exceptional taste for cafe. With truly great service from barristers to meeting the in-house baker Sally who told us she became a baker to help with stress from Army husband deployments. That story alone makes us want to return any time visiting Tallahassee . We had heard about their large lemon blueberry sweet rolls and had to come try. Big enough to split and melted in your mouth. Ever walked into a coffee place and felt like home? That was the feeling as soon as entered with the aroma of amazing coffee. Their barista staff were so helpful and friendly. We got a few of the savory pastries and we both thought they could have used being heated up. Ground Ops is definitely a sweet coffee kind of joint. Thus place is horribly delicious. Really good coffee and really, really, really good cinnamon rolls. They only bake a few things, but they make them extra fantastic and keep having new and interesting takes each time I go. It takes all my willpower to resist downing one of those bad boys each time I'm in the area. And the environment is fantastic. The Ground Ops Roastery and Bakehouse is a family-owned establishment in Tallahassee, Florida. THey opened about 2 1/2 years ago and we have visited several time for coffee and the sweet and savory rolls. All our visits have been tied to breakfast. This is a local place, and I always recommend sampling the local places because they offer options you cannot get in other locations since they don't have any (yet). There is ample parking outside, even on a busy Saturday. Be forewarned, the speed bumps in the parking lot are NOT forgiving. You.must.slow.down to avoid the underside of your car making that big thud when you were going a little too fast. There is outdoor and indoor seating and plenty of it each time we visited. Once the humidity leaves Tallahassee in late fall, it'll be nice to sit outside and enjoy some fresh air. The indoor decor has the feel of a minimalist farmhouse. There is plenty of seating from window/bar seating to tables and sofas and easy chairs. You'll feel you're in a comfortable cafe environment. The bakery case greets you as you enter and try to narrow your choice to just one roll or hello cake. The hello cakes, which is sort of a buttercake that was named for the first hello from the owner to his now wife. Hello cakes are mini butter cakes offered in options including lemon blueberry, triple chocolate, etc. The sweet rolls, include cinnamon and maple pecan, etc. The savory rolls include sausage and egg, smoked meats, spinach feta, and bacon and egg. Don't set your sights on one particular flavor I mentioned. The bakery options seem to change every couple of days. So the selection on your visit may be different than what we purchased. The bakehouse also offers bars and squares, pies, cakes, as well as cookies. We sampled the chicken and waffles sweet roll drizzled with a glaze topping and the bacon, cheese and egg savory roll. The rolls are tall and dense. Both tasted great and are very filling. However, I felt as though they are a little dry. You definitely want to order coffee or juice to help wash it down! The coffee scent will draw you in and the staff can make just about any coffee beverage. The bakehouse definitely offers a wide variety over time and we are constantly motivated to return. Ambiance - Walking in, you are intrigued by the sight of the baked goods display. This made me excited about the menu because I skipped breakfast. The room feels wide, modern, industrial and cozy, with lots of natural light. This is also complimented by the large and easy-to-read screens. The staff was also kind enough to offer paper menus if you're not a big fan of looking up for a long time. Drink - I had the seasonal peach/fruit matcha tea, this was a bit of a risk for me, because I don't usually like sweet drinks, but peaches are in-season, and it was a bit late in the day for coffee for me (2pm), I figured, why not. No regrets. It is super rare for me to not find drinks such as this to be made overly sweet (understandable for mass appeal, just not my preference); this, however, was perfect. Seasonal and refreshing, I literally sipped on it for an hour while talking to a friend as though the conversation and drink were perfectly paired. Food This was the disappointment. As mentioned earlier, one of the first appeals when walking in, was the bakery display, so, I was excited to try something savory then sweet. The staff recommended the sausage egg and cheese savory roll. The savory sausage and richness of the cheese in the roll was apparent, but the texture and oil contentment was very wrong. It was oily and dense, with no acid or any other usual component to cut or balance the heavy and rich flavors. I could not each much of it. I also had the hello cake. Unfortunately, there was not much of a difference between the textures of the cake and the roll. Only in this case, it was so oily, sugary and dense, I was not able eat more than a few bites. This was such a shame because the flavors and aromas are so warm and inviting...I really wanted to love it. If I had to make a recommendation for this restaurant, it would be to take advantage of seasonal ingredients (they are in abundance, naturally sweet and cheap in season) and suggests pairings with specialty and seasonal drinks. For example, the fruit matcha would be really great with a very light lemon or lime cake or pastry. If they can improve the cake and rolls, they would be so perfect for fall and Xmas seasons, people would order them by the pound. Hope this helps! read more

I like the cakes and I like the coffee, but be careful going on a weekend. You could get kicked out of your spot in the middle of a book for a random band and offered a seat IN THE FULL SUN as recompense. =_= as if being pale and not wanting to be in the sun without sunscreen is an issue. Full disclosure, I was offered something on the house, but given I had a cake and a coffee next to me, I'm not sure what that is supposed to do. Probably going to be mindful when I come from now on to avoid this situation. I arrived at 9am and was asked to move at 10:30am with no warning prior. Also, limited options for sugar free people. I can have it, but I have a few friends I can't bring due to their diets without sticking to the plain sugar free vanilla. I've also arrived when things are sold out, which isn't an issue and I was offered a free plain cake once upon a time when they didn't have the chocolate so they're pretty good usually about customer service. Food was great, but service was downright AWFUL. The lady at the register with bangs and the yin and yang necklace was very passive aggressive despite my partner and I being very cheerful, patient, and understanding. We proceeded to wait over half an hour going up to the counter three different times to ask about the progress of a pastry we ordered to split. My partner had to wait through the line to ask specifically the lady at the register about it to get anywhere. She argued with my partner about giving us the food until we brought up the receipt. She then backtracked and finally got our order ready I've never met someone in the service industry that absolutely miserable and rude. I will never be coming back here, which is a huge shame because the food and interior are both absolutely lovely. Having to ask about food FOUR TIMES is ridiculous and I can't believe she had the audacity to argue repeatedly until we showed her the receipt. I understand that people have bad days and make mistakes, but the way she handled things was awful. Been so curious about Ground Ops for a while so I was excited when it finally opened. It is SO quaint & bright inside - they did a fab job! And a lot of outdoor seating, too. I went in the first day they were opened after their grand opening on Veterens Day. It was midday so it wasn't busy & they had enough choices of savory & sweet bakery offerings that I brought a variety of choices for me & my husband to try. The bacon, cheese & egg roll was good but you best be hungry coz it's filling. We also split the blueberry-lemon roll - again I was happy to share coz it's a lot but tasty. My favorite, however, was the Pineapple Hello Cake! As far as my coffee choice, I ordered a latte with Irish Crème flavoring. Meh. It was extremely light in color (I know lattes have more milk than espresso) & I had a hard time identifying any other flavor. It simply didn't taste like much more ecru colored milk over ice. I'll give it another try once they've been opened for a while. One last thing, when I pulled in off Thomasville Rd it was difficult to get in b/c of a truck parked & jutting into the drive area next to the dumpster - I had to wait for 2 cars to pull out so o could even get into the parking lot. I've been 4-5 times now and every time I get a coffee it's not hot. All of there drinks seem to come out lukewarm. The coffee itself is quite good but I personally don't find it as enjoyable when it is 10 minutes away from being cold. Not sure if I should request extra hot, but it seems odd that the coffee is always so temperate. read more
