Service was fine, baristas were friendly but not overly so. Placed my order, appreciated the prices (only two sizes large 16 oz and 12 oz) - 5.75 for a large caramel syrup latte. Drink wait time around 5 mins (there seemed to be a bit of a backlog even though only one person had been in front of me). And then I got my coffee, hopes dashed, why is it bubbly on the top, where's the foam?! Also, I'm not certain if it's their version of caramel but has a bit of a nutty flavor. Ouch, disappointing to say the least. Palatable (well, jury's still out) but won't be returning for their lattes. Went here on a whim because Leon's was unexpectedly closed. It was a great spot that I had never been to. My friend and I very much enjoyed our chicken salad croissant sandwiches. The White Dog Blended Coffee drink was also quite tasty. It was pretty packed for a Friday afternoon, but we still managed to snag a table for two. It's very cozy inside. Admittedly, there is not much as far as breakfast joints around here, aside from large chains like Waffle House. This little cafe offers an unbelievable view, with good coffee. However, I would recommend skipping the food. We ordered a bagel melt and a spinach croissant, and both were not very good. Also, my coffee cup was pretty dirty-looking. I absolutely love the Black Dog Cafe. It is my favorite coffee shop in all of Tallahassee. The crowd is a mix of locals and students doing work, but it is a peaceful and studious environment. It is a quaint coffee shop, cozy on the inside, and serene on the outside. If you are lucky, you can get a seat on the patio or the picnic tables facing Lake Ella, a picturesque lake situated behind the coffee shop. The chocolate croissants here are OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS. They are always sold out, which breaks my heart, because that's my go-to. If you can't snag one of those, then try the spinach croissant or ham and swiss. Those are good too. Their iced matcha latte is really good, milky and sweet. I love to visit here for a study session and coffee date. The restaurant only asks that you continue ordering coffee if you are occupying a table for a long period of time, but I am happy to support a local business. Parking is really easy too. read more

I ordered a pesto, provolone, and tomato bagel melt from Black Dog (~$11) and it was delicious! The pesto wasn't as strong but it hit the spot. The bagel was crispy and the cheese was nicely melted. However, the wait time was a bit long. I waited around 25-30 minutes for this bagel. They did warn me beforehand that that's how long it would take, but it wasn't extremely busy when I ordered so I'm not sure why the wait was especially long. I also ordered an americano with Irish cream and caramel syrup. Even though it was simple, it was tasty and hit the coffee mark. I also got a slice of coffee cake which was delicious! It paired well with the americano but it would've been fine solo as well. It was nice and light and had pecans in the strudel which elevated the flavor. The coffee with the dessert was ~$8. What's the selling factor of Black Dog is the location! If you sit outdoors, you get a great view of Lake Ella. Plus, they have a covering to block the sun so you can sit out anytime of the day. Grabbing something to eat and drink and then taking a walk around the lake is a spectacular way to take a nice break :) the only thing is that I wish there was more space to sit indoors as well. It felt a bit crammed when I was ordering even though there weren't that many people. read more

I happened upon their vegan chili which was a hit (and quite spicy). The baristas were kind but understaffed. Unfortunately, there aren't enough staff to handle the lunch rush efficiently (my chili was forgotten)! My first visit! Finally! I've head so many good things but had never taken the time to stop in! However, cousin was heading out of town & wanted to grab a quick breakfast before hitting the road & this was the best time to try it! And it did not disappoint! Beautiful morning, the inside was crowded so we ended up outside - not too hot nor buggy losing it was perfect! And soooo cute inside. Great menu choices - she got the 'coffee of the day' while I chose the Vietnamese coffee & we each got a savory croissant (she had ham & cheese, while I opted for spinach & feta). The croissant was perfect but (for me) the spinach filling was heavier than I expected but it was still very good! They offer plenty of vegan options for those who are interested, sweet & savory choices & LOTS of coffees! They also have frozen treats for hot days (especially if you're out walking Lake Ella) & then some beer & wine options. I saw sangria on a menu & I'll definitely need to give that a try! The Black Dog has been here as long as I can remember. It's hard to miss if you're hanging around Lake Ella. Definitely a local business that should be supported! I've been here a couple of times in the past year, both pre-COVID and ... well in these times. I've tried the nitro cold brew (even in the winter, I know!) and the cold brew + lemonade (I'm so intrigued by this whole citrus + coffee trend these days) and both have been smooth and easy drinking. My most recent visit was August 2020 and they were following COVID guidelines by ordering only through the takeout window they have set up on the patio. With the breeze in my hair and my hands clutching on tightly to a friend of mine, we made it to Black Dog Café on a motorcycle. The café is ridiculously close to Lake Ella, and the parking situation is spacious, albeit rocky. Not sure if I felt that way because of how I arrived there though. It was a cold day. Perfect for some hot chocolate. At least that was our thought. We went in and it really felt like home for me. Wooden interior, dim lighting, and so much variety of coffees and teas. Surprisingly they also sold ice cream pops, but seeing as I didn't see anyone crazy, I can say they were left alone. The pastries, though, were popular. The gooey spinach and feta croissant I had held me over until much later. Well, that and bites of cookies. We ended up sitting outside, where we happened to overlook the area as we sipped on what I feel is some of the best hot chocolate I've ever had. I seriously had the feels (the warms truly). This hidden gem is not so hidden to most Tallahassee folk, but given that I run circles around Lake Ella on a fairly regular basis and have never really noticed it, it is a hidden gem to me! Stepped into a very busy Black Dog Cafe with a friend for a late Saturday caffeine fix yesterday. Immediately evident was the popularity of this cafe! It is worth noting that it is a pretty narrow space. The line seems to form either on the left or the right, but I learned that patrons are supposed to line up along the left by the popsicle container window. One wall was lined with a bookshelf which contained many board games for customers to "rent" for around one or two bucks. Games seemed to be one reason people enjoy Black Dog, as patrons all around us were engaged in various chess matches, accompanied by the authentic chess timer (a rare sight for me). Other patrons were captivated in literature, plugging away on their laptops (presuming the wifi connection there is pretty solid), or quietly socializing with friends. I perused the specials board and ordered the very top beverage listed (Headless Horseman I think was the name of the drink). It seemed like the latte's ingredients were creatively selected for the Fall season but the combination of flavors turned out to be the absolute PERFECT concoction! The fact that Black Dog baristas can whip up espresso-based beverages unlike anything made at the local Starbucks chain, puts this shop on top of all others that I've been to in the area thus far. Oh, and the huge outdoor porch overlooking Lake Ella is pretty much perfect. I will definitely be back. read more

Black Dog is full of childhood memories! I used to come here often and get their Coconut Italian Soda - Coconut syrup and Sparkling Water as a teenager - very tasty! They've revamped the interior a couple years ago & it's much more aesthetically looking. To drink, I had their French Toast Latte - $6.86 after $1/tip. As the barista said, he could always add more of the fancy syrup but the way it was made with whole milk was the real deal, not too sweet and perfection in every sip! I LOVED it! They also have board games for rent. We sat outdoors - the patio has some shade from an oak tree & is so lovely with other plants. They also have an outdoor window if you feel safer to put your coffee and food order in which includes scones, bagels, soups, etc. All their employees are vaccinated. Parking isn't bad because I usually manage to find a spot in their lot or along the street! read more

PLEASE READ!! This was the worst experience I've ever had at any coffee shop I've been to. Went here with my friend and her dog who is training to be her service animal. The second we walk in everyone is giving us dirty looks and the "manager" i suppose comes over to ask us what she is a service dog for and to go outside which is illegal. This woman was so disrespectful and made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable by shaming us for bringing a service animal to black "dog" cafe. A shame they actually hate dogs. Service: My boyfriend and I brought my family as they were visiting from out of town, looking for vegan goodies, and coffee addicts. This place was a must visit. I've visited in the past when I needed a pick me up to study but their food and coffee has always been consistently delicious and this was my first time taking some to make at home. The cashier was super helpful, gave me a tester for the coffee I was purchasing, and very curteous. She handled our large group of 6 people with multiple orders like a pro. Covid precautions: There is a sign at the entrance letting you know the max count for customers allowed in at a time as well as masked required sign.. Plus there's social distancing stickers on the floor, and no indoor seating at the moment but there is outdoor seating. What we got: Bought a vegan chocolate chip cookie white dog frap, local honey, and a pound of ground coffee which happened to be their special for the day. The cookie and frappe was delicious and I've been using the coffee for my morning cup every other day. Black Dog is one of my go-to coffee spots in Tally and for good reason. I love that they make an effort to use syrups free of anything artificial. They're super accomodating to various dietary needs, providing ample selection of milk alternatives and GF/vegan baked goods. The Peanut Butter & Jelly Bars are my personal favorite! The atmosphere is very positive and relaxed. There is wifi so you can study peacefully if you're a student like me. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend sitting outside where you can see the lake! I was pleased to see how well Black Dog has adapted to COVID. Seating is limited to outside, masks are required when not seated, and they direct traffic flow on the deck to ensure social distancing. This is a place to go in between doing other things to kick back for 15-30 minutes and enjoy your time (literally and figuratively) in the sun. Pleasant place owned by an adjunct English professor, which should give you some idea of the (comfy, intellectual-friendly) vibe. The crowds range from families enjoying a nice day out to nerds talking about their Dungeons and Dragons character sheets to aging goths and punks reminiscing about that time they went to a GG Allin show back in '87. Sometimes you will get the opportunity to play Chess against someone you have never met before. Even if you don't smoke try the smoking section of the patio for conversations with strangers and to meet new people. Many of them will become fast friends.
