About two years ago, the groomer of our Shih Tzu left her current grooming position at another business. She did such a great job with our aggressive and unruly dog, Baxter, that we had to find where she, Christine, was now working. I went to nextdoor.com and found some comments about Christine at Grooming Tails and the great job she did. Fortunately, it was "our" Christine. Grooming Tails also has a wonderful person, Francine, working the office, doing the scheduling, and greeting you and your pet. Francine always calls the day before reminding you of your coming appointment, a task which has saved me a few times! Christine does an excellent job grooming. Her skill is impressive as Baxter does not like his face or head touched by anyone. It is quite difficult to get Baxter through the front door of Grooming Tails. But, when Christine comes out to get him, his tail starts wagging and he becomes passive, even friendly. Christine and Francine make going to Grooming Tails a very pleasant experience. Oh, I failed to mention that Christine had previously treated our 16-year old Shih Tzu, Sergio, with compassion and care, something we will always be grateful for. read more

So sad! Found out that Gloria, my Yorkie's groomer is leaving Grooming Tails at the end of this week. She has been grooming my Bruno for eight years and he adores her as do I. Also found out that Francine, their front office wonder woman has now left. Not sure if there is a new owner, but whomever is working the front desk leaves a lot to be desired. We've been going to this place for the past year and a half to service our dog, and it has typically been a positive experience. The lady at the front desk is extremely nice and our dog's haircuts are typically good, minus a few nicks here or there. Today, we got a call that our dog was ready, and they said he had a minor cut, no big deal. When we came in, the workers must've been dreading us coming in because they looked at us funny when we entered, like they were dreading something. Basically, his balls had two larger than average cuts in them, which looked like small holes that were already starting to puss. When we asked them about it, they repeated over and over that "he was matted", and insinuated that the mats were the cause of the cut on his privates. Another lady, the stylist, came out gruffly and without any look of kindness said adamantly that "he was matted", and kept repeating it like a politician toting the party line. Now, our dog was shaggy and definitely needed a haircut, but the fact that his hair was matted did not affect his balls being singed by the razor, since he does not grow hair down there. My fiance was on the verge of tears as they continued to make excuses for their poor mishandling of our dog's haircut. They pointed to some powder that they recommended, did not offer it, nor did they offer a refund. How about offer an apology to us for accidentally gouging our dog instead of blaming us for our dog being shaggy? I guess this place thinks it's better customer service to deny all liability for what happened rather than own up and apologize sincerely for a cut that they made. We didn't make a scene; we just wanted to get our dog out of there. We left without receiving a real apology, sense of contrition, or any offer of refund or compensation. Cliffsnotes: If you bring a dog here and he gets cut, they'll blame the owner of the dog and make excuses for their mistakes, rather than apologize. We won't be back here again. read more

Not the same standard of service. I won't be going there again I have been bringing my dogs here for years. Christine, their groomer left, then Francine who ran the front desk left. I wondered why that happened very quickly. I had them groomed and wasn't happy they neglected to release the glands. I gave it another try today, I asked that the dogs be groomed at the same time when I made the appointment to minimize the time they would be there. instead I dropped them off an one was shaking so badly I had to carry him, the other I had to leave in the car and wrestle him to get out. That never happened before! I should have known they were trying to tell me something I called after 21/2 hours and was told one of my dogs was just being started. 3 1/2 hours to groom two 15 pound dogs. I'm sure they spent most of the time in the kennel. The prices were increased and the new owner was not there to speak with. The girl at the front desk was apologetic, but I don't think she had a lot of control. Too bad I really liked this place! read more

I hesitate to write this review because it could help increase their clientele, which will could cause scheduling issues because they already have a large customer base. So know up front to schedule a month or more out. Their customer base is so large for obvious reasons, excellence. I have a 5 pound, 11 yr old female Maltese named Jade. If you don't know the Maltese breed, they are the ones at the dog shows with the long, white hair that reaches the floor. Their coats are high, high maintenance, which means excellent grooming is essential. Gloria is our groomer. Not only is Gloria always kind and happy to accommodate my requests for Jade's coat, but she also does an exceptional job regardless of what type of cut I ask for. ...whatever I ask for, Gloria does an exceptional job. I can't say enough great things about her...hands down the best groomer I've ever had regardless of what state I've lived in. The other aspect of their service that I really like and don't find available at all groomers is how they turn the dogs out so quickly. The grooming jobs are not rushed, but once they are finished, you are expected to pick your dog up as soon as possible. My high maintenance Maltese is typically finished within 2 hours from drop off. They try not to keep dogs through the entire day. You need not expect to wait until 4-5pm until you can pick up your sweet baby. Dogs are caged or crated until you pick them up. They do not allow the dogs to walk around out of their cages until pick up. I realize some people may find that as a negative, but for dogs who are extremely fearful of other dogs and humans (like my Jade), it helps her feel secure and safe...protected. Plus, as I mentioned, she has a white coat, so caging her ensures her grooming job remains clean and beautiful. Outside of the freshly cut fur on the floor, the shop is always very clean and groomers sweep the floor between their dogs. They take great care to ensure the waiting area is also clean. With regards to the state of the shop and the front and back-office staff, I also give great kudos. Francine, the scheduler, is also always very kind, complementary, and diligent in helping however she can. If there is such thing as being "too nice", Francine is guilty. The world needs more kind people like Francine. Julie, who owns Grooming Tails, has always shown me that other than a great grooming job, she expects respect for you, the dogs and her groomers. She's typically very busy; I see her maybe every other grooming. She obviously has her dogs groomed by her groomers to ensure quality and skill remains high. It's typically Francine who you'll work with, if you try them out. The only negative I can say is that they have too many clients. As I previously mentioned, it can be challenging to get your dog in last minute. If you call and ask for the soonest appointment available, odds are high you will have to wait a month. I have Jade on a monthly grooming schedule, so I have her scheduled out for a year. That seems excessive, right? Well, it's because I'm not willing to go anywhere else. Gloria has my business for as long as she's available. In reading the few negative reviews, I noticed that nobody identified the name of any groomer who did a poor job. I see too that they were written 2+ years ago, so who knows if the groomer the reviewer is referencing is even still employed at this business. I've obviously never had an issue with Jade or my previous *male* Maltese, or I'd mention that in this review. Any negative reviews you read here are obviously exceptions, as you can see from the overall rating. I recommend you keep any negative reviews you read in the context of a very small percentage of exceptions. Pricing - I have no idea how much a large dog costs, but compared to other grooming places I've called, they're the same as any other salon. Who knows if the pandemic and other external costs will eventually cause the pricing to raise, but even if it does, they will still have my business. I refuse to go elsewhere. One more thing to note - please remember that this is a small business. Please support this small business' success and longevity by wearing your mask during your interactions with their staff. Think about it with logic - if one of the groomers gets sick with Covid, they may all have to quarantine to ensure they don't spread it to you. If a groomer gets COVID, this small business may require they close for a couple of weeks until all groomers test negative again. That will only work against YOUR and my dog's needs. So, think about the dogs' needs and help protect this small business wearing your mask for the meager 5 minutes you're there. Those of us who are loyal need this great grooming salon to always stay open. read more

If it were possible to give ZERO stars I would do so. I wouldn't bring my dogs back here if they paid me to. We had been bringing our 13 year old 4 lb Yorkie to them for some time and had been fairly happy. The front desk person actually makes this business because she is so friendly and helpful, unfortunately that is the exact opposite case in the owner. We adopted another Yorkie who was 10 weeks old and started bringing her in for grooming along with our senior girl (approx every 6 weeks). Our new puppy was super friendly and loves people, but understandably anxious about the scissors and clippers. Picking her up the first few times the front desk girl assured us that she was doing fine and that her being timid was normal, she also suggested that we bring her in more often (?) to get her acclimated to grooming. Around the 4th time we brought her in we were returning to pick her up when a woman who was walking into the business in front of us turned around and said "You're picking up Bailey?" I smiled and said yes thinking she must work there. She then started yelling at us about how hard it was to groom her face and under her chin because she was afraid of the clippers. I was shocked and thought, wow, what if the owner hears her talking to customers like this. The poor front desk girl was looking at me with a horrified expression on her face and I thought oh my gosh this woman is going to get fired! Imagine my shock when I found out that this was THE OWNER talking to us this way! After she walked away the desk girl apologized profusely and assured us that Bailey was fine, but I was so unnerved by this behavior I couldn't stop thinking about how unprofessional this was. She obviously is not a dog lover, however she owns a grooming business! Isn't part of their job to acclimate puppies to grooming? How did she treat our dog when she became angry about her fear of the clippers? This still gives me nightmares. Stay far away! read more

I used this place for the first time on my puppy king cavilier and then the following week on my 6yr old king cavilier (they were booked that week for me to get both in the same day). Best job ever. Seriously. I don't know what they do but I have never looked at a groomer much more than giving my dogs a good bath and hair trim. This place made both my dogs look like show dogs. And when I went to pick my dog up, not kidding, every dog in the grooming area and leaving all looked like show dogs. I want to know their trick and I want to know if they will open a place in flagstaff! I will 100% go here everytime I have my dogs in town. I love this place and would recommend Grooming Tails to anyone! My 2 dogs come home looking and smelling great and their coats stay soft and bright days later. They are always excited to go, like they know it's grooming time! The staff is completely wonderful and I have never had a bad experience. They have a nice shop where you can see your pet, unlike some shops who "hide" your animal away. The groomers are knowledgeable and approachable if you have questions or concerns. I've met the owner on several occasions and she is very fair and caring. The staff at Grooming Tails treat my boys right and I wouldn't take them anywhere else! p.s. I recently took my dog to this groomer and was very disappointed. I spoke with the person that would be grooming my dog and showed her pictures of how I WANTED MY DOG GROOMED. Lo and behold when she was done she was not groomed the way we discussed. I called and asked to speak to the manager who was not available. The person who answered the phone was very polite and said that this "cut" was how some people with this breed have their dogs groomed. The fact that I showed them pictures that looked nothing like this cut did not seem to matter. They did offer to "fix" her, but at this point there was no hair left to "fix". The prices were a good $10-$15 higher than several groomers in the area. On the bright side, the place is very clean and the staff was very polite. read more

THESE PEOPLE ARE SNOBS!!! If there was a way for me to rate them with ZERO stars I would!! These are NOT dog people and the owner is a total snob. Really I would use much harsher words to describe her but I don't want to bleep!! We have 2 little dogs and one is from the pound so he is usually scared with new groomers, vets, etc. We intially decided to use them for grooming after stopping in and meeting their receptionist...she was VERY nice and a total dog person. I really thought my dogs would be treated well here. From everything she told us our rescue dog would be treated with patience and have a gentle, calm grooming. First of all we made the appt. well over a week ahead of time and had made special plans to have our rescue pup with their most experienced groomer but when we showed up they had double-booked her and wanted to switch to someone else. I said no. I'm sorry but we did make the appointment a week ahead of time-- give me a break. That was the first snafu. The second was they said it would be a couple of hours so we made plans to stay nearby.....they never called us to tell us they were ready so I finally had to call them several hours later. To boot they were RUDE to us and acted like it was an inconvenience to cut our dogs hair at all.....I was really surprised at the attitude. I mean seriously when you charge $50 for a 9 lb dogs haircut I expect a certain level of service and I expect them to look like show dogs not hack jobs. Their cuts were un-even and they even complained that one of the groomers "was very unhappy that our dog gave him kisses". Yes those were her actual words!! I mean I left there fuming!!! I don't usually leave reviews like this because I really prefer to only spend time on the places that I like but I hope I can prevent someone else from taking their dog here and possibly getting mistreated. I can't help but think that maybe they were so nice to us the first time we went in because they hadn't yet earned our business and we just happened to be driving our range rover (when we picked up our dogs we were in our tacoma truck) ---- I wouldn't have thought about it at all if it hadn't been such a drastic attitude difference. These people are awful and I would not recommend them to my worst enemy!! :( read more

I took my dog here a few times and was very happy. They weren't overly friendly but that was ok. This last time though there was a mistake in the scheduling, and they couldn't groom my dog. Not placing blame on them since I know I make mistakes, I walked out and later called to reschedule. On the phone though, the receptionist denied me service. The owner just didn't want my business any longer. Now, I can understand if I had thrown a fit in their store, but I absolutely did not. The receptionist even remembered me being there and was surprised she was being told to not let me make an appt. She said I didn't act inappropriately at all. This means to me that the customer doesn't always come first and the customer isn't always right at this place. I would think a small business owner would live and breathe by these rules. Don't take your pet here. Absolutely take them to a small, private owned grooming business but not this one. Apparently they don't need us! read more
