This is a quint out of the way restaurant. They only do dinner on Thursday nights. My party started with Praline Pecan bacon. I will say it is almost too much pecan on it. But it is heavenly bacon candy. Out of the party of 5, 3 of us ordered the meat loaf and everyone said it is the bomb. I got the brisket and grits and one other got the shrimp and grits. The brisket was one thick cut with BBQ sauce slathered on it. The grits were just ok. They were congealed and not hot. The portions are huge and everyone was full to the max. Service was great too. Everyone in the party also ordered dessert and we were so full took them to go. They were all good. The carrot cake is very different than what im used to but overall tasty. The coca-cola cake was classic and extremely moist. The bread pudding was so-so. The fired pies were ok too.

I had read and heard a lot about this restaurant in Southern Living and other food magazines as well as personal references from friends familiar with and friends of the chef couple who own Grits and Groceries, but never had made the journey down from Greenville, so this was our first visit. It is about an hour drive or 40 miles or so to Saylors Crossing, where G&G is located. The co-owner, Heidi Trull, describes the name of the restaurant as coming from an old blues song lyric: "Now if I don't love you baby, I tell you grits ain't grocery, eggs ain't poultry, and Mona Lisa was a man." So, it is telling towards the country roots for their fare - not fancy fine dining, but very good food and farm to table as much as possible (their goal is 80% at least). Both chefs, husband Joe, worked extensively with Emeril Lagasse's restaurants as well as their own, in New Orleans and some of these flavors are reflected in the food. It is 9 miles from Belton, 9 miles from Greenwood, 9 miles from Abbeville....in other words, it is a destination restaurant in the strictest sense. We hit the restaurant at lunchtime on the last Friday of July 2020 in the midst of Covid-19 season. There are a few inside tables, but many more outside tables on the patio, which was pleasant in atmosphere and temperature, several ceiling fans going, no issues with insects and attentive service (see photo). We came at 11:30 and were seated promptly, several table options were open, but this soon changed and became a 30 minute wait by the end of our meal. Special mention: Since this is a farm to table restaurant, it was impossible to pass up the appetizer, Hattie Mae's Tomato Pie, served with fresh bread and butter homemade pickles. This could easily be in the top ten of anything I have eaten in my entire life. If I were on that TV show, "The Best Thing I Ever Ate," this could be my choice. It was so good, I ordered two to go. The pie is about a 2.5 inch base and 4.5 inch mouth individual tin filled with the goodness of Joe's pie crust (he was the head of pastry for all of Emeril's restaurants) and then fresh tomatoes layered, onions and mayonnaise with fresh herbs (tarragon, oregano, basil?) and cheddar cheese. The only way this could have been better would be bacon, but then it may have blown my mind with goodness. We had the two "to-go" additional orders for supper that night. The Covid part - socially distanced tables, staff wearing masks, sanitizer and sanitizing hand wipes on every table, styrofoam cups and a new one for refills, most reasonable precautions were in place. Guests not required to wear mask at this time, especially going to and fro the outdoor venue. The food: My wife had the stuffed French Toast for her entree' because she loves that dish and she described it as "dessert for lunch," and as excellent. My entree was the seafood casserole. This was a little different and the reason for not having a solid 5 star review. The flavors were good and reminiscent of a Creole gumbo. But this was more like a thin soup than a casserole. It was good in flavor. Imagine a bowl of seafood soup with shrimp, fish and a stone crab claw with a rectangle of cheesy soda bread on top. The bread was an inch thick (a sheet cut in half) and was delicious. The stone crab claw was scored, but nearly impossible to eat as no crab claw implements were provided. I was somewhat take by surprise at the thin nature of the "casserole" and can only guess that this was a take on a de-constructed casserole, with the binder being the cheese bread topping. Perhaps this was cooked in the oven and hence the "casserole" designation rather than soup, stew or gumbo, but it was really not one of either of these four as I would have thought each term meant. It was excellent in flavor, but with the difficulty of the stone claw and unusual nature of the dish itself and that it was $13.75, I was a little let down versus expectations. We will definitely return, and in the near future, with other guests in tow, so don't take my personal disappointment with the seafood casserole overshadow the overall excellent experience (and especially not to overshadow the tomato pie heaven that we experienced) as not recommending Grits and Groceries. It will be on our list for our "pleasure drives" as the central destination.

Doesn't matter whether you go for Brunch or Thursday (ONLY) dinner, this place is a treat! I love the Tomato Pie and Ham Balls. If you do the Grit Cake, get the gravy on the side. It's tomato based and not such a Southern thang-I'd rather white gravy personally. Everything is good, especially the specials!

DEE-LISH-OUS!!! Fantastic food, really nice owners (were there, working the door and kitchen!), and laid back neighborhood place feel. The spot has very welcoming indoor and outdoor seating areas. We wanted to try all the starters but settled on the tomato pie and praline bacon, before adding the ham balls for dessert, after sharing the quacker club and banana foster waffle. We're already planning our selections for the next visit. The smooth cheesy topped tomato pie filling was savory and toothy. The tomatoes, pie crust, and topping were all recognizable and served piping hot. Great dish! The praline bacon was good and exactly as described. Sweet, crunchy, bacon. What's not to love? The duck pastrami sandwich was ridiculously tasty! The melted havarti cheese draped over a generous portion of what appeared to be hand sliced (because of the inconsistent thickness and shape) duck pastrami. The meat tasted pastramied (real word?, but you get it) and was slightly spicy. The marbled rye, onion, and tomato round out this fantastic sandwich. The side of salt and peppered fries were disappointing. Way greasy and limp, not twice fried. Deep fried country ham balls over homemade pepper jelly sauce? Yes please!! Crunchy on the outside, smooth and savory on the inside, with a spicy sweet sauce. The massive complimentary flavor and texture battle in your mouth will make you happy. We sat at the counter and had a complete view of the kitchen. It was great to watch the flow and interactions of the chef-owner and kitchen staff. They've obviously been working together for a while with each predicting needs and timing of what the other needs or has coming up. Great place!

This is now one of our favorite restaurants in all of South Carolina. We loved Thursday night dinner! Easily the best cheeseburger I've had in all of the state of S.C. They know how to do Shrimp & Grits right. And don't miss taking home a $2 Fried pie or two and a $9 Chocolate Coca-Cola pound cake like we did! My husband and I heard about this place almost as soon as we settled down in Anderson a year ago. Today was his first visit and my second, and it was not disappointing. We ended up sharing a large 7 seater table with another small group, but it was above 90 degrees and we were not about to sit outside! We started with the ham balls and pepper jelly because we'd heard great things, and they were insanely delicious! I'm mildly obsessed with pepper jelly, and it did not disappoint. I got the shrimp po boy (it was pretty good), and he got the pimento burger. He said it was the best he's had since being in SC, and that's saying a lot since he's a burger snob. We ended with some perfectly tart buttermilk lemon ice cream. There might be a wait when you get there. It's worth it.

This is a hidden jewel of South Carolina. The food was amazing, every bite of every thing. Terry provided incredible hospitality serving us and giving incredible recommendations. I can't say enough about the pimento cheese! I'm taking a pound of it home with me!! The desserts, meal and starters...outstanding. Inside and Outside dining, and dogs allowed outside.

    Praline bacon---wow!

Good Lord the food here is fantastic! My best friend lives near here and brought my husband and I to try it out. We were so happy she did. We had to wait in a pretty long line to get in, but that's always a good sign, so we didn't mind. We tried their praline bacon first because I've never seen anything like that on menus where I live. It was so yummy! Crispy strips of bacon topped with honey and crushed pralines--whoa! I ordered the eggs Elizabeth- French bread topped with thin-sliced ham, poached eggs & hollandaise. Everything about this dish was perfect. The hollandaise sauce was on-point and the eggs were gently poached. I highly recommend trying this place. They have indoor and outdoor seating, the food is amazing and everyone is really friendly.

You walk in, grab a tray, and you've got options. You can go through the hot bar and get served right there, pay, and be on your way... or order off the menu, sit down, and they'll bring the food to you. Very simple and efficient. The inside is spacious with plenty of seating, and there's also outdoor seating if you want it. Parking is easy too, which is a big plus, especially compared to the chaos you'll run into closer to Helen. Food wise, I always judge breakfast spots by the chicken, egg, and cheese biscuit... and this one held up. The chicken was tender, the biscuit was soft and fresh, and overall it was a solid start. The surprise for me was the hashbrown casserole. It came out good, but once I added a little salt, the flavor really popped. Definitely worth getting. The pancakes were also done right... nice crispy edges with a soft, fluffy inside. That's exactly how pancakes should be. Menu wise, they've got everything you'd expect from a Southern breakfast spot... biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, country ham, pancakes, omelets, and even lunch style items like burgers and plate meals if you come later. They also have a Coca-Cola fountain, which is always a win. Service was friendly, especially for early morning, and the whole place just has that comfortable, old-school home cooking feel. There is also a drive thru if you don't feel like leaving your car. Overall, this is a great spot if you want a good breakfast without the crowds. Simple, tasty, and easy.
