I recently decided to try something new in Tucson and visited Gringos Mexican Kitchen, which is conveniently located near my area. From the moment we arrived, we had a great experience. We were warmly greeted by Samantha, the manager, who made us feel welcome right away. My girlfriend and I were celebrating her birthday, so we sat at the bar, ordered a couple of drinks, and enjoyed watching the game while soaking in the lively atmosphere. Samantha recommended we try some of their food, and we're glad we did. We started with the happy hour tacos--an incredible deal at $7 for two tacos. I ordered the chicken tacos on corn tortillas, while my girlfriend had the steak tacos on flour tortillas. Both were topped with cabbage, pico de gallo, queso, and a flavorful house sauce. They were fresh, well-prepared, and absolutely delicious. We then decided to try the fajitas, which were just as impressive--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. To top off the night, we asked about dessert options. The cheesecake looked amazing, and my girlfriend chose the flan cake. The staff went above and beyond by adding a special birthday decoration, which made the moment even more memorable. Overall, we had a fantastic experience. The food, service, and atmosphere were all outstanding. After dinner, we even stayed nearby and enjoyed the pool, making it a perfect evening from start to finish. Matthew gave us such a great experience. The chips and salsa were some of the best we've had. The salsa was bright, fresh, flavorful, and had just the right amount of heat. The tacos were easily in our top five. We came during happy hour, and the 2-for-$7 pork or chicken taco special was such a good deal. I ordered the chicken tacos, and they were generously sized for happy hour and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend had the carne asada tacos, and they were just as good. The rice was also really flavorful. We even complimented the chef, who we could see cooking in the kitchen behind us. My wife and I went to Gringo's on Thursday night. We live walking distance from them and since 2005 when we moved here, ate there 7-8 times a year (if not more). We have not been there since covid hit as their menu was hit and miss the few years before then. Constant staff/chef change, etc. On Thursday evening, I walked in. No Sign to seat yourself or wait. after a few minutes I was told to seat myself. My wife showed up, and sat on the patio outside, Nice area. The menu was very minimal. I ordered the burrito meal, Wife ordered the 3 taco (chose fish) meal. My Burrito was cold, as was the rice and beans. The Beans was a smear and the rice was almost wasteless. Wy wife's beans/rice were there same, tacos were warm. I sent me meal back, 20 minutes later I get it returned. They Microwaved it, and the tortilla on then burrito was hard. I asked for the manager, was told they had none, that they had a big event over the weekend and 4 people quit on Monday. 7 years ago I had a ribeye with a chimichurri sauce, A smothered large porkchop...THEY WERE FANTASTIC! Let's start with the food. The chips and salsa were great. Salsa not spicy and had wonderful flavors. The mini chimichangas were fantastic. I had the chilli relleno. Ask for no red sauce, bland and just not good. The rice was good though. Aside from that the dish was palatable. The service on the other hand..........heavily lacking. I couldn't get a drink refill unless I asked and for lost my time there I didn't have a drink. Now keeping in mind we were a big party, it still was pretty significant, since I wasn't drinking anything other than water. Would I visit again? Not unless a gun was put to my head and I was told if I don't go then the trigger gets pulled. I wouldn't go out of my way to go and I really wouldn't recommend anyone else to go. The continental breakfast......bacon and sausage were good. Eggs were good and decent variety of things. The seating was, eh. Not really aesthetically pleasing honestly. Chips tasted like they were fried in rancid oil so we asked for another order. Tasted the same. Ordered enchiladas with carnitas and food was cold and couldn't find carnitas in the enchiladas. Surprisely delicious! With a name like gringo I wasn't sure how good it would be. It wasn't like authentic Mexican food but it was yummy yummy for my tummy! I had the tortilla soup and my boyfriend had fajitas. We both ate too much and left happy! The mini chimis were my favorite. We had their guacamole and it was really good too! I only wish they had a hotter salsa beside the bottle stuff. The normal salsa was good but no real kick to it for us. We sat on the deck overlooking the hotel pool which was pretty nice in late March. They seem to have drastically cut back their menu from earlier Yelp photos. They didn't seem to have a drink menu but it's a Mexican place so my wife ordered a regular margarita. I asked for a mojito since I had seen that on what must have been an old photo. The guy thought for a minute and said "um, sure, we can probably make a mojito - if we can find the mix." Yikes! I said " no thanks" to that. He said their specialty is Prickly Pear Marg, so I tried that. It was super sweet and pretty weak. My wife's marg was also pretty weak but it was slightly better so I went with that for round 2. The chips/salsa, and guacamole were decent though having to pay for chips at a Mex place is a little odd. The new menu didn't have any of the more interesting looking things they used to serve so I went with 3 tacos while my wife had enchiladas. Both of our entrees were too salty to finish. We had just driven all day so were too tired to fuss and just left. We went back for the free breakfast the next morning. Sadly, it was worth what we paid- zero. It was the usual hotel eggs, pancakes, sausage etc. but it was barely warm. The eggs seemed to be freeze dried and were overcooked so just fell apart. At least the biscuits and gravy were ok. Tried Gringo tonight. It was okay at best. Service was okay, based on the fact the they only had one server and one cook, under staffed did not help. The server and cook were not at fault. The food was okay, but did not have much taste, not enough flavor and spices. Ordered appetizers that did not get to use until about a minute or two before our food arrived, it was just chips, salsa and guacamole, which should not take that long to get to assembled. The guacamole was okay, it needed a Serrano chile added to it to add more flavor. Management should have been helping with the cooking and serving tasks. When I was in the food service management sector I would make certain my servers and cooks had the extra help they need to get the best service for our customers, including helping with the cooking and serving. Didn't happen here. Very disappointed and won't be coming back. read more

This restaurant is attached to Las Posadas Lodge and Casitas along Oracle. It has a Hispanic theme ambiance. They have patio dining which has a nice view. Food is great, they have a really small menu, but their serving is huge! It's a family restaurant type with a bar. Although our food came before our appetizers, it was not an issue, because everything tasted good. Our server is really nice and friendly. I ordered their wings, they were hot and cooked through, but the sauce was minimal and was more on the plate than tossed on the wings. They put cabbage on the plate which is not an appropriate garnish for wings and I had to scrape it off my wings before eating. The fries were clumped together from the basket not getting shaken in the fryer, they were greasy and flavorless. I tried bettering it with ranch or ketchup and it still wasn't enough to bring it up to par. I was enticed their buy one get one free drink specials, that is the only reason you should be going to this establishment. The service is mid. I am not quite sure what in the creation is up with this place. My colleague and friend were staying at a hotel nearby and decided to stop in, ( as I had been here a couple of years ago and liked this place, while on a weekend trip to U of A where my daughter was a student) for a margarita away from our other colleagues before a dinner meeting. We came at Happy Hour on a Thursday evening. First off, this place has a great view; great decor and a LOT of potential to be great. That's where this reviews positives end. There were 3 bartenders (female)and two (male) chefs and a bar back (male) all seemingly hanging around the bar area and one chef in the kitchen yelling at the bartenders and wait staff. The bar had about 6 people seated plus me and my friend. We sat and were given waters..with hands that were wet that this bartender wiped off on her dirty t-shirt and apron. My friend and I immediately looked at each other with that (eww look).. and continued to wait to order. There was something just off about this girl. We got her attention as she looked off into space almost like she was going to fall asleep standing up ? and ordered two house margaritas. She started shake them and dropped the mixer and broke a glass. Welp. She now had to change the ice out; we waited 5-8 minutes for that. We only had about 40 minutes to catch a drink to begin with so this was proving to be a major task. She started again with our drinks and then dropped a bottle of tequila and broke it. Another girl took over and we were asked if we wanted lime in our margarita. UMMMM ??? I said, "it's a main ingredient.. so yes?" This girl rolled her eyes. Gave us , (again with wet hands) the drinks and said, "I am unsure how this will taste, so I hope that you like them". There was no salt on our glasses. No straws; no napkins for our wet glasses and it was the most awful drink I may have ever had outside of something you make in college when you TRY really hard to just well.. get drunk with what you have. I mean, I wasn't that person, but I knew them! These drinks were terrible. We asked for the bill.. she gave us the bill and we left. The end. Disgusting. Awful. Who knows what was happening with all these people standing around not doing much of anything but rolling their eyes or yelling at each other and making awful... AWFUL drinks and the chef yelling out to the wait staff whatever he was yelling! What a mess of a place and a messier staff. This is a situation where the manager needs to just... start over. A very good and well priced Mexican restaurant. Although not completely authentic, the Ceviche and steak fajitas along with the Margaritas were excellent. Food and drinks arrived promptly. Lovely Mexican restaurant in Tucson near the mall. Large bar and beautiful deck overlooking the university stadium. Although not associated with the La Posada hotel attached to it, it's got great views of the pool area. Many hotel patrons asked to bill room and that's a 'No'. The Mexican decor and music playing from the speakers definitely get you in the margarita vibe. The guacamole was super fresh as well as the chips and salsa. The tacos come with 3 and they are filled to the top (lleno) and quite filling. The shrimp tacos were tasty but could have used a little more flavor. The asada tacos were also very flavorful but again was a little over cooked. The staff hustles to get you a drink and get your food out. The michelada was actually very good! Probably in my top 5. The enchiladas were normal, not in my top 10 but also not the worst. The staff was friendly & attentive. Would recommend to go if you are staying in that hotel or in the area nearby. read more

New Year's Eve and it's a quiet one. We made it for happy hour so everything was 25% off. Food was decent. I was just surprised it wasn't more busy. I had ceviche. We shared guacamole. The guacamole came with white flour tortilla chips. It had no spice at all. My ceviche had clams and fish. It was average and I would have loved to have had limes. But the bartender was inattentive to details though. He never gave us any napkins and utensils with our appetizers. We reached over the bar and grabbed our own. He did come by after 40 minutes or so to ask if we were "all right". How about offering us a refill. Oh well. We savored the one and enjoyed the decor and conversation. It's always a pleasant experience, with decent food and less than average service here. When the weather is good, the patio is very accommodating with great outdoor scenery. I used to frequent this spot years ago when it was called Miguel's and finally had an opportunity to visit Gringo last night. The food was good, but not great, which admittedly is tough with so much competition when it comes to Mexican Food in Tucson. I very much enjoyed my tortilla soup, but the enchiladas, rice and beans were just decent. My friend's fajitas looked delicious and according to her, they tasted delicious, as well. Portions were nice and big and prices were reasonable. Our server was friendly, but service was slow despite the fact that there were only a few other occupied tables. The food came out fast enough, but we had empty glasses for quite some time before our server came by to see if we wanted another round. We ate inside, but if I were to go back, I'd ask to sit on the patio overlooking the pool- it's a really beautiful setting for drinks and appetizers or a meal with a friend or group. read more

First, the food was solid. There was nothing overly unique, but for a Mexican restaurant called Gringo, the American-style Mexican seemed appropriate. And everything was delicious to spite the lack of inspiration. The problem was the service, or lack of it. There were two servers for the entire restaurant, including the bar. The did mention the service might be a bit slow, but at the time, there were only four tables with guests and a few people at the bar. But customers kept drifting in. The silverware was not being set, menus were a single sheet of paper, and it was 15-20 minutes between visits from the staff. And the one inexcusable issue was the 7 of our 8 guests were served at one time, and the 8th wasn't served for at least another 20 minutes. I assume they forgot the order, or someone dropped it, but it made it for an awkward start to the meal. If I was staying at the attached hotel, and had a lot of time to kill, I could see returning. No chips and salsa with meal which is super random for Mexican food place. I was also informed the meal didn't come with salsa? It took 25 minutes to get tacos off their lunch menu? The food was ok....pricey too, $13.00 and a tea I returned! I wouldn't recommend this place and I won't be back. Server was on cell phone appeared to be texting in between his time at host stand and customers. I used to come here many years ago when it was Miguel's and the happy hour was fantastic. We went for lunch on a Monday and I had the Tucson Iron Chef winning entrée quesadilla. It was somewhat strange for a quesadilla, with bacon, spinach, kale and some cheese. It needed more cheese because that's the foundation of a quesadilla! The fried guacamole that it's served with was good, but sour cream would've elevated this meal a lot. Chips 'n salsa are $3 and I usually would snub that, but I really wanted some chips 'n salsa! The chips were very fresh & tasty and the one salsa it's served with was pretty good. I used the yelp check in offer for a free call drink and had the Tucson, muddled prickly pear with Glenlivet & vermouth. It sounded like a Southwest style Manhattan, and it kind of was. It was strong for sure! Kudos for the check in offer for sure. They have a ghost chili cocktail challenge I tried to get the lowdown on, and the server said it's made with 100 chilies or something, which can't be right. She also said she doesn't think anyone has ever finished it! You have to sign a waiver to partake also. A t-shirt and a beer seems like a lame reward for a ghost chili challenge! The patio overlooks the adjacent lodge's pool and is a nice area to dine on. Our waiter was easily distracted throughout the night. We had eight to ten people in our party and he constantly forgot our requests much less our table. He exclaimed numerous times "If you need something, please let me know." However, whenever we needed him he wasn't visible so we stopped ordering drinks. I asked if the shrimp was grilled in my Caesar Salad with a Twist. He replied "Yes, they are grilled." This cantina was adjacent to the hotel we were staying at so since we opted to walk and not drive to dinner this seemed perfect. When we came in we were greeted immediately and there were maybe 5-6 people sitting at the bar and only one other party of 2 seated in the large restaurant. Our waiter was a little odd, I don't know what else to say except very odd the whole night. I ordered a Pinot noir that was excellent! However it seemed to take a long time to get it. Then we ordered the chips and queso with pico de Gallo along with our taco entrees. The food took FOREVER. My husband needed his allergy medicine and left to the hotel next door to get it, he left and came back and we still didn't have the appetizer. When the queso came it didn't have an pico, which I was looking forward to. However the waiter never asked how it was or anything. I was disappointed but didn't want to ask about it. About 20 minutes later our food finally came and one new table of people was sat. That's 3 tables, one of which had gotten their bill, so the delay was a little absurd. I then overheard the waiter tell the Neighbors table they are out of pico de Gallo, he never told us or acknowledged that we didn't get what we ordered and paid for. I got the shrimp tacos and my husband got the carne asada tacos. The shrimp was breaded and that was not listed in the description, they were okay but not what I wanted, fried shrimp, a simple slaw and very light creama. No tomatoes or any other additions, kinda boring. My regrows beans were actually very good. The rice is basic not bad but not great. My husbands carne asada tacos looked exactly like my shrimp tacos but with steak and slaw and creama. The steak was awful, it tasted like meat that was cooked days ago and rewarmed. He only ate one but he also enjoyed his beans. We had a coupon for a free drink from yelp and decided we could splurge on dessert since the drink was free, and bc my husband hardly ate. We ordered the brownie ala mode and it wasn't good. It tasted like brownies you make from a box, the edges were hard and the ice cream had no flavor. Needless to say we were disappointed.
