I was disappointed with the quality of these meatballs. They were small, bland and lacking flavor along with the sauce. Womp womp :-( The bread came out perfectly toasted which was the best part of this grinder. The cheese also had a nice melt too it and a nice cheese stretch. Good quality on the bread and cheese. I love sandwiches and every time I come to Grinders Keepers they make the most fresh and delicious subs around. The price is good for the huge portions you get and they have a variety of drinks and chips to add. This place is cash only as they are a small mom and pop shop and it's only the two of them working! They are some of the friendliest people I've ever met and meet every single customer with a smile. I like the build your own option here but they also have a variety of combos to get that are just as tasty. The head is baked fresh from Harvest Bakery down the street and I love that this local shop helps support and is connected with other local shops in the area. I visited Grinders Keepers with some friends and I'm definitely not impressed. After having worked across the street from a great deli in Hamden for the past 5 years, I am a bit spoiled. The bread was decent enough though but the concoction that I like to order at some delis in Hamden and North Haven consisting of a chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, onions, lettuce, mayonnaise, and capicola just wasn't very good. The cutlets were dry and very pre-prepared tasting and it cost an extra $3.00 for a few slices of capicola! While waiting for our grinders to get made, I perused the menu and noticed that the Italian combo was made up of a rather disappointing showing of meat. Overall, I wasn't thrilled with the price of the food or the execution. I'd rather go for grinders at some of my other favorite establishments. read more

The best grinder I've had in Connecticut. While I haven't been to the location... what I was handed felt like an early Christmas present. I hear it's cash only. What I got was an Italian, oil & vinegar. It comes wrapped in white butcher paper. It was the freshest, most delicious grinder I've had since the 90s! The sandwich literally tasted fresh! I can't express my enjoyment from something so simple. It made me feel young again... This is not a joke. I remember when you could get a sub/grinder/hoagie at your local deli or pizza place. Those days are long gone. Making the existence of Grinders Keepers all the more impressive! I am going to go back, I'm going to share this experience with friends and family. Bristol does not have many good options for restaurants or to grab a good sandwich. Plenty of chain restaurant choices but not much else. Grinders Keepers is a better alternative to the chain sub shops. Nothing spectacular here just quality sandwiches for a fair price. Made from fresh sliced to order meats not pre packaged turkey based nonsense like you get at some of the so called "fresh" chains. I've been a customer of theirs for over 25 years now, I remember when they used to be next to the flower shop on Farmington Ave. This is my favorite grinder spot in Bristol. The owners are very welcoming; she is always calling people sweetie or honey, which is always great. They try to get to know all of their customers which is a great quality in a business. They do offer a coupon card, so when you order a certain number of grinders you get a free one, so make sure to ask for the card if they forget, which isn't that often. They are a cash only business, but that shouldn't stop you from getting this great food. Not to mention there is a Webster Bank in the Stop and Shop Plaza less than 1/4 of a mile from them if you're running low on cash. Normal price for a full 12" grinder is about $7+, salad prices range depending on what you want in it, but normally about $4-5+. As for the food, they aren't skimpy on the stuff in their grinders like most places are around here( i.e. Subway). I always order the chicken salad foot long with black olives and lettuce. It's is so creamy and delicious that you can't just stop at 1/2 a grinder. They slice their own deli meats and cheeses for their grinders and salads. The bread is soft with a little crunch on the outside and it's always fresh. I've also had their chopped salads, which are hard to screw up, but they always use the freshest veggies and toppings. You don't have to worry about getting those dark green, slimy pieces that you'll get at Burger King or store bought sandwiches and salads. And make sure to get the dressing on the side, the salads come in a metal container with a plastic top with the crimping sides, so you can always add as much as you want and shake it up if you want. Put it this way, if they wouldn't eat it, then they're not going to give it to their customers. They take as much care with your food as you would with your own food. And if you have a legitimate issue, make sure to say something to them. They are very nice and always want their customers to leave happy and full. read more

Great homemade sandwich shop with a ton of options. This must be the original Mom and Pop style restaurant in the area. Cash only and since it's literally Mom and Pop making sandwiches for a ton of customers I recommend calling ahead with your order. Cash only is a little bit of a pain but the prices are not too bad so you shouldn't ever be without enough cash on hand. Easy to get to and when I showed up there was plenty of parking. Grinders Keepers is better than Subway or any chain sandwich shop around. The bread comes from a well known local bakery, the menu ranges from any kind of cold cut to hot sandwiches like steak & cheese, prices can't be beat and the owners work so hard to make sure that everyone who comes in is satisfied. They're always so friendly and it's obvious the place is their pride and joy- for obvious reasons :-) I started going here over 10 years ago and now it's so routine my weeks wouldn't feel complete without getting grinders here once or twice a week. And for the complaints about it being CASH only- it's so that they can keep their prices lower. (Plus, bright idea, maybe carrying cash around a little more often will actually prevent you from being the next victim of credit card fraud) Who knows though! I really love grinders, and this place hits the spot! I don't go all too often- but when I do, the friendly owners strike up conversation with me as if I have been their loyal customer for life :). The bread is really soft and delicious. Even though they take their sweet time to make your sandwich, you know it was made with love. They will even cut it in half and wrap the halves separately, just so it will fit in your work lunch box (how sweet)! I also love their frequent shopper card, where they will punch a hole in it for every sandwich you buy, and after the card is filled, you get a free grinder. I ordered a ham & cheese sandwich on a roll. While I waited, the woman talked quite a bit then spent some time explaining their combo meal system that was a little involved. Apparently, they're having trouble getting chips in uniform sized bags. While the sandwich wasn't overstuffed, there was still a sizeable amount of meat on that roll. There prices are always off. My wife and I order our grinders there from time to time and its always the same thing. They always seem to tell you one price over the phone, but when you get there, its always $4-$5 more. There policy of "cash only", saves them tons of money, so you would expect there advertisement of over stuffed grinders to be true.. But in fact, not even close. After you eat one of there "whole" grinders, you'll definitely get hungry again after about an hour. My wife now refuses to go in because of the gentlemen (owner) at the counter always gives an attitude and doesn't know how to treat there customers. I don't appreciate anyone talking down to my wife.. especially since shes so nice to everyone. Bottom Line. Grinders are less than par... False advertising of being "over stuffed".. Small sandwich shop, fairly clean but very outdated. The problem I had with the place is that he didn't wash his hands and made my sandwich without any gloves on. I absolutely could not eat the sandwich not because I thought he was dirty, but because I didn't want to get sick. I ended up throwing out the sandwich and going to a great Italian Deli in Waterbury (Dom & Emilio's at 835 Wolcott Street) where the guy did wash his hands and wore gloves, plus the sandwich was awesome. read more
