Not sure what the other reviewer was smoking when he was eating or reviewing because he claimed it's tasty but later said it's pretty average?!
I honestly don't know where else you can get better skewers than this in Hong Kong (Island) because it's pretty bomb. So if you do know, please PM me! It's freshly grilled and loaded with flavour (and MSG). But if you're on a plant-based or organic diet, this isn't the place for you.
And yes it tastes as good as it smells! It's actually reminiscent of the streetside skewers in Bangkok (even the MSG level) which are 1/5 of the prices but you also risk spending your whole vacation with explosive diarrhea (still 10/10 worth it!)
The key though is their spicy sauce. If you don't get it spicy,t hen it doesn't really have a dip, what good is that? That's like eating sushi without soy sauce (And wasabi) or fried turnip cake without xo sauce.Eat it spicy like the Thai people! But if you can't take the heat, then you better train up and keep a bottle of cold water with you. You should anyway because you're probably drunk off your ass if you're coming here. (Not me though, I like this place so much I come here for lunch/sober).
I've tried all the meats here but not the seafood. And everything I've tried is mouthwatering. I usually get the PORK NECK $20, CHICKEN $15, SHORT RIBS $40.
Others that are good include CHICKEN WINGS (Deboned I think) $20, PORK $15, ASPARAGUS $20
Each order comes with 1 skewer and each skewer comes with an average of 2-4 pieces depending on which one you get, but it's quite a lot of meat!. It's not a bad price ESPECIALLY considering it's located in the heart of LKF, I remember balking at that curry fishball place that charged $20 for one stick. I don't think it lasted? I was (still am) a fan of Thai Hut in Wanchai but they charge $16 for a chicken skewer and it's not freshly grilled, they just microwave it! So I consider this a good deal!
Anyways this place opens all day all night, so if you work in Central you can come here for a takeaway lunch or dinner as well. This place is a good alternative for people who don't really like to eat Chinese food (Tsui Wah) after their drunken night.
Surprise surprise though, they also have delicious HAINAN CHICKEN RICE $60. It's one of my favourite food ever that I can pretty much eat every day and to me, and this is one of the best in Hong Kong. It's Thai style so you get the spicy thai dip which I prefer.
The chicken is above average but the star of the dish is the rice. Amazing, fragrant rice with a strong lemongrass flavour that's not overpowering. I do think it's an acquired taste though but I freakin love the rice and nowhere else does it like this.
However it's loaded with MSG because after devouring this, it feels like I spent a week out in the Sahara desert. Even their included drink does little to quench that thirst. At $60 including a drink, it's excellent value in the heart of Central! However their lemon tea is lackluster, probably one of the worst, it lacks tea flavour but at least it's not overly sweet. More like drinking lemon water.
On the other hand, their FRIED RICE WITH BBQ SKEWERS $60 is not so good. sure you get 3 skewers which are a decent deal but their rice is inedible. It's loaded with sodium and it's spicy and has a weird taste (herbal?). Anyway I would not recommend it.
