This is hands down my favorite bar! I come here all the time for steak night and karaoke on Friday nights. Nikki, Emily, John, and DJ Mark are the best around! Steak night is super cheap and they have the best steaks, especially with grilled mushrooms and onions on top. Karaoke starts around 10pm on Friday nights and it's the best around. Went for steak night. Dad was craving a dive bar steak experience for late Father's Day. Waitress was awesome, super sweet and attentive. Actually all the staff was really friendly and attentive. Steaks were thick, juicy, and cooked perfectly. I feel like some bars have started cutting their steaks really thin on steak night - not here!! Baked potatoes was delicious. Well, if you're looking for the perfect place to spend a Saturday afternoon, watch for when Griff's has its next crawfish boil. Mmm mmm mmm, delicious. They had a bunch of picnic tables set up outside with a live band, and then behind the bar, they were serving up crawfish by the pound, and shrimp by the half pound. $13 for a pound of crawfish & half pound of shrimp. Don't even need to go inside. Was basically threatened by I can only assume an owner? I came to go to the consulate now realizing they are closed at the current time so came back to my truck at which time I noticed the 'Griffs parking- others will be towed sign' I was on the phone texting my brother, contemplating going inside and checking the place out, when I was approached by a lady who pretty much threatened me not to come back and I could go to the coffee shop or cheesesteak place on the other side. Needless to say if this is how they 'welcome' new people, I don't want any part of it. Being in the industry myself I would never approach and act the way this lady did. If I felt it necessary I'd maybe approach with a 'hey just so you know type attitude' vs a 'watch your back, I'm gonna get you' attitude. read more

Judging almost soley on their steak night, which is the only reason why I'd ever come here basically. Very dive, old, run down feeling and decor. They have a patio, game area, and TVs so not totally outdated and out of whack but definitely has that old school bar feel. You'd know what I'm saying if you've been there. Parking kind of sucks here as the lot is super small and street parking is tricky. On to the steak... not the best steak... mine was actually over cooked as it was closer to the med well to med rare side. There was a little bit of char but the flavor just wasn't there. Wasn't all that juicey either. All in all, a decent cut of meat but definitely not the best you can come by at a steak night. Comes with a baked potatoe and beer. Cool thing is that they have a baked potatoe station so you can load it with whatever and how much ever you want. At a fair price of $13, its not too shabby. Took a minute to find where the entrance is when we walked up. Look for the patio area and there you will find it. When we walked in we felt very awkward since there were no other tables to sit at but really no where to stand. We were about to make our way over to the pool tables then they were taken so we awkwardly stood around until someone left their table. Lots of old sport memoribelia all over the place. They brought a DJ in around 10 who was pretty good but moved from song to song to fast for me, especially when I was singing along to one. The bar has several different beers on tap and in bottles. The best are the St. Arnolds of course. They looked a little weird in the light but tasted fine. Saw people with food but we had just eaten so I didn't try it. Lots of different ages of people here, not only for the young hip people. Lots of old school video games around. Very chill place to grab a beer. It is a dive for sure though, lots of dust on all the old memorabilia, you could barely tell what some things were. This may be solely based on a bad Tuesday steak night. But man.. It was bad. We came at 8 and some of us didn't get our steaks till 10. The waitress tried really hard to keep us happy. Luckily, we were a fun group and kept things light hearted. She even threw in a round of Jell-O shots and beer to thank us for being patient. She was really apologetic, giving us a fair explanation of how overworked the kitchen and staff were. But I have to give yelpers a fair explanation of my experience and I got to say, my group was not pleased by our steak!! Lemme tell you, we are avid steak night eaters and know how to compare bars for their deals. As for this steak night, I heard at least 3 times : we should of gone to hideaway, community bar, saint Danes, front Porch, etc.. Anywhere except here. If you prefer a natural sodium light steak taste then you might... like it here, but it was flavorless to the majority of our group. Even to the guy who says steak at hideaway is too salty. Consider this; every bottle of A1 steak sauce was empty. People were fighting for more flavor Moreover the majority had their medium or medium rare steak TOUGH! Mine was fine but my bfs was dry. This is one of our "go-to" neighborhood spots... In fact, several of my family members are connected to this bar as well through the Old Boys Rugby Club which is great. Griff's is nothing fancy - it truly is a NEIGHBORHOOD bar for Houston folks that just want stiff drinks at a decent price, quality bar food, and fun music on the weekends (specifically Saturdays) without pretentiousness or a lot of fuss. It's really fun to watch local sports games there - I'm a Rockets fan and there are usually a group of CRAZY Rox fans there making a major rukus during games (fun). They could do well to purchase a better big-screen though, the picture kinda sucks (no HD? come on). Word to the wise - Saturdays are the best nights at Griff's. The DJ who plays on Saturdays is IMO WAAAAY better than the guy they have on Fridays (a little heavy on the cheese factor if you ask me). Saturdays start off with your standard top 40 dance & hip hop, but he usually incorporates some great H-Town gems that you don't hear a lot at other places (Fat Pat anyone?). Grifs is known as the oldest continuously operating sports bar in Houston, certainly in Montrose. It's a classic dive bar and favorite for locals. Expect warm and friendly service. Nothing too fancy. Beers are cheap here and plenty of food specials (eg tacos steak etc). You MUST visit here for an Astros or Texans game day. There will be a great crowd and there's plenty of tvs everywhere. No doubt a dive bar...with a dive bar crowd! Probably our mistake for going on a Monday night, but...we sat near the bar (another mistake), and could barely hear ourselves think. There was a very loud, drunken political conversation happening. It was entertaining for a minute, but then just annoying and too loud. The bartender/waitress (there was only one for the whole place), was very friendly and helpful. She handled the stress of being alone well. She told us right off the bat that it was dollar hot dog night. $1 for a chili dog and chips! Then she told us we could sit anywhere...we headed for the nearest table..."except there! That's the manager's table!" Haha...ok... Drink specials were $2 domestic draft and $3.50 Jager shots. Lots of people there were taking advantage of the Jager shots. I had a St. Arnold's Elissa, and my husband had a coke. I ordered the $1 hot dog, of course, and he ordered the Philly cheesesteak burrito. The hot dog was a hot dog - chili most likely warmed from a can. Nothing special, but it was tasty. The chips were just greasy potato chips. The burrito was goood. VERY heavy and greasy. We could have easily shared that and both been full. It came with very good onion rings. Everything was hot when served. We had a Restaurant.com gift certificate, and needed to order more to use it - so we ordered a club sandwich and took it to go. I tried a bite of it when it was hot, and yummmm. I met with some friends for Happy Hour and first impression was "oh dear where am I" once inside, the warmth of the place hits you instantly. Friendly staff attends to you quickly. I actually enjoyed this place a lot. It's definitely the definition of a dive bar. The inside is dark and cabin like with the wood floors creaking with every step. There were TV's with sports ball playing, if you're into that. The food is great but definitely unhealthy and not something that you'll feel proud about eating the next morning. A overtime victory. I was on vacation when I came here per recommendation by my cousin who comes here a lot. They have a special on Tuesday for $12.99 steaks+beer+potato. We had just finished the Godzilla movie and naturally I was wearing my Seahawks super bowl championship shirt. Since Griffs was a Houston diehard sports bar, I expected to be greeted with boos and hurtful words; especially considering how Sherman broke the back and confidence of Matt Schaub during week 4's game last year. But behold! Instead the owners Debbie and Donna wanted to welcome me to Houston and bought my party a round of drinks! How nice! although they ran out of steak they gave us a 7 Dollar Porkchop special that was the best porkchop I have ever tasted. In short. It was exactly that. A sports bar for sure. The building is very worn in. Old weathered wood everywhere with lots of TV's in every direction. There is a patio out front, and a small bar. Lots of wood tables and booths. Some pool tables as well. Overall, if you like the sports bar theme you will love it here. I am usually not a big fan of this kind of bar, but it is still enjoyable for the most part. Service is decent. Friendly and quick is the name of the game. The food is hot, and the beer is relatively fresh. No complaints about the quality. The food is standard pub grub Wings, burgers, etc. Nothing special, but it will fill you up. The selection is pretty standard with a few decent offerings. Saint Arnold Ellissa and some New Belgium are the highlights. Pretty much BMC otherwise. Overall, a nice local sports bar that has some local Saint Arnold offerings. Nothing more. If you are looking for a sports bar to watch the Texans game, this is a good option. I will take this any day over the many generic chain options around town. read more

Griff's is a divey sports bar. I love Griff's for its well-worn, locals-place nature. The TV situation isn't the best, but they have a ton of them, so you can watch just about anything on. Not a huge selection of beer on draft or in bottle, but it's not trying to be that type of place anyway. The drinks are strong and cheap, just the way I like it. I used to go here with my friends on a regular basis, but we eventually stopped going. We decided to take a little trip down memory lane last weekend, and it was well worth it. $1 Lonestars still in effect! While I am not really a huge fan anymore, it is too cheap to pass up. The rest of the drinks are the same. Affordable, and has a deejay who takes requests on the weekend. The crowd is very diverse, but everyone there was really nice. We even had a lady bring us some jello shots from her friend who was having a birthday. Very small parking lot, in a tow-happy neighborhood, so watch yourself. Don't park in the lot next door that clearly states the fact they will tow. All in all, a good time, and pretty much what I remembered. read more

I've only come here for trivia and it's always a blast. You can't get a better deal for $3: trivia, DELICIOUS nacho bar, and a jello shot. I am actually super disappointed to give this place a bad review. I usually go here for steak night and fell in love with the dive spot that offers a great steak and baked potato with all the fixings plus beer for $12. I came here and enjoyed the food and service so much I decided to try it on a week day for lunch. My coworker and I went here and actually were "served" come to find out, by the manager of the place Pete. He was a complete butthole and totally ruined my love for the spot. We asked him what kind of vodka they had and his response was, "What do you want me to name them all and just sneered at us?" I thought, uuum yeah stupid, name as many as you can so I can select one as I didn't think this was an abnormal question since I usually ask most bars I go to and get an actual respectful reply listing their drinks. Plus its a dive, its not like they have an extensive collection of vodkas. He didn't come back over to refill our drinks we ordered, he seemed bothered by us asking for anything additional and had a really bad attitude in general. We were only 1 of about 3 tables there for lunch, the place wasn't busy, he just had no desire to actually be nice. I actually had to approach him at the bar to even order a drink with my meal and to ask for the check. Also I went for the daily lunch special of chicken parmesan only to be told that's not the actual special for the day, is not offered and it was lasagna instead. He was not welcoming whatsoever and it was not until another steak night that I begrudgingly went back for and was told by one of his waitresses that he is supposedly a known butthole to the entire crew. Its sad when the worst attitudes and treatment of a customer comes from the top. Thank goodness for his amazing bar staff and waitresses who try to make up for his nasty attitude and god bless yall for having to put up with such as disrespectful boss. Also the place could use a touch up on the plastic clear table coverings. The tables we sat at for steak night towards the back had two broken and jagged plastic coverings that were not only just dangerous but were dirty and needed to be cleaned. A good sports bar if you're in the mood for some football or basketball. I tried this and it is hidden in an area behind Montrose Blvd. and it was a privilege to find this pub. You sit down and order from the menu and enjoy football game on the big screens while others in the restaurant are cheering as opposed to other places. I had a classic burger on their menu and it was juicy in the meet, and the condiments made it more tasty. A side of fries was also good with it. The people in the bar watching sports on TV are a little loud and with language, but that's a sports bar for you. If you're not a fan of noise you might not want to try this place, but if you're looking for a day to watch the Texans or NFL games why not? I didn't try their appetizers, but they did look appealing when I was browsing the menu. I might try one of them next time I get a chance to eat here. I am glad a friend brought me here to see what a sports bar is really like. Parking is under a hood on the side but a little walk to go to the entrance. There is also a patio outside that looked like a backyard, which I thought was a nice scenery. It feels like you're at a house party watching football. So next time you're in the Montrose area, go try this hidden sports bar and see for yourself what a fun place it is. I love this place when it's chill & uncrowded, when it's what a trendy clubber would probably call "dead," when I can talk to my beau at normal volume, and he can hear me, & we can converse with the bartender about the movie he's showing on two of the fifteen screens. And I hate this place when there's a DJ or, god forbid, f'in karaoke like last night. Gawd, the anguish of karaoke blasting at 140dBs! I left after one drink, couldn't take the noise & drunken ridiculousness. Next time I won't stay at all when they havethat nonsense going on. So, 4 stars when it's chill & uncrowded 1 star when it's loud with a bad DJ or, worse, effin karaoke. My favorite steak night special in town! Every Tuesday, for $12 you get a good size steak, potato and PBR. Clean, and friendly if a bit divey. Cliquish, bad attitude bartender (one is cool and professional , one is amazingly rude and standoffish). Depending on the day you come in, if you dont drink in there everyday, then forget it. Griffs has been around for a long long time...that and their kickin St patty's Day Party at least keeps them with 3 stars. Honestly the place needs a major facelift, they can keep the outside divey but the inside needs to at least be cleaned up...come on. They seem to hold togeather because of the regulars which is fine I guess but Im sure those regulars arent making rich. I will say the service is always good and the drinks are stiff. This place is cool. Very chill. Good place to grab some beers with some friends. On Fridays its $1 Lone Stars. Cant beat it if your looking to get "drunk on a budget." They have two pool tables, two outdoor patios(one thats covered). They usually also have a DJ playing on Friday nights(only night I been there) and people getting down dancing. Overall this place is good for hanging out with friends, playing some pool and getting some cheap drinks. read more

This is one of the finest examples of an American dive bar. The bartender quite congenial and looks like he was in a barbershop quartet in the 1920s. I highly recommend Griff bar pizza it is damn good, don't ask what's on it but you can tell there is a pizza oven back there. This is a good neighborhood bar. There is ample parking split between the parking lot and the street. Make sure not to park on the north side or if looking at the entrance, the right side parking lot...you will get towed, it is not owned by Griff's. There is really nothing fancy about Griff's...its sort of a dive bar. We went there to watch the BCS Bowl and had a great time. Had plenty of TV's to view the game from wherever you sat. The place was packed, but probably would have been less packed if the game wasn't on and it wasn't so cold outside....they have 2 patios outdoor sitting. The kitchen seemed to be short staffed since it took a hour to get our food, but they tried to keep us happy with free Jello shots (who can say no to free jello shots) and constantly asking if we needed anything to drink. They seemed to have a good variety of beers/liquor....we got a few shots and they were not stingy on the amount poured. When the food did come out, it seemed that everyone enjoyed there meals, one of my friends order was wrong, they immediately fixed it without any hassle. I ordered the philly cheesesteak, it was good, but would have preferred just a tad bit more meat in it. Others ordered the hotdog combo, wings, and the Megan grill cheese. We had a good time watching the game there...people were friendly...staff was great. Will go back to try their Tuesday Steak night.
