Stopped in after way too long of them being closed. They are finally open again after being closed. Happy to see the newly restored bar. Menu is about the same as before for those who used to come in. Well worth the visit to this local establishment. The wings are back. So happy about that. I had the patty melt which had the perfect onions and grilled jalapeños. My husband devoured the ham and cheese rightfully so. The fries nice and crisp. Tater tots were also crisp. The bartender is new but very attentive. Looking forward to seeing him grow in his role. The owners are staples with the old regulars coming back. The feel is a refresh not a replacement. It still has the old feel but with an updated feel. The bathrooms are really nice for a pub. Plenty of room and clean. Honestly very happy to see them able to recover from a fire. Griffs has resurrected better than before their closing. I came here on a Friday for lunch and had Catfish for $9.95. They give you the choice of Fried, Blackend, or Grilled. I came again on a Tuesday for Steak Night. I had a huge Ribeye steak and baked potato and a drink for $19.95. It as made to order and did not disappoint. It happened to be during and Astros game so there as a good crowd. Nothing fancy but a great local small town feel in the Heart of Houston Montrose. They have an Irish Texas Theme and loyal to all local Houston Sports and the Official Texas Tech bar in Houston. read more

Be respectful of the locals, while it's only been re-opened for about 4 weeks since a devastating fire nearly 3 years ago...it's a place that cares for its regulars and the neighborhood that it calls home. Griffs is a Houston staple and is back after the fire that took place there. The inside and outside of the building has been redone and is beautiful but it still has that same vibe as before. Great little dive bar with a close-knit feel. My group and I came here because I was looking for a Thursday night trivia spot. I had read a few reviews and decided to check this place out. First of all, this seems like a really cool spot for any night of the week. They have lots of promos and nightly specials. I hear great things about the steak night! As for Trivia night: * Starts at 8pm (finally, a start time I can make it by!) * $3 per person to play (includes a complimentary nacho bar and Round 3 Jell-O shot) * 4 rounds of 10 questions each, plus one bonus riddle at the end * Very serious trivia goers, but ready to be lighthearted and have a good time * Tough questions! Hit up Griff's for Thursday night trivia ($3 entry fee per person, 8 pm) and was not disappointed! We parked on the street and walked up to the quiet, unassuming pub located just behind Montrose. As soon as you step through the door, the environment changes immediately from desolation to coziness, color, and warmth. I ordered only a diet coke but helped a friend split a pitcher of Shiner (pitchers ranging from $8-11). Once we turned in our entry fees, we were granted access to the modest but tasty nacho bar (which, along with the jello shots that were being passed out like Halloween candy, easily make up for entrance.) Our trivia quizmaster was quite lively and the four rounds, each 10 questions, passed with much cheer and laughs to be had. Afterwards, our gregarious server offered us $3.25 you-call-it drink specials, but we called it a night and head home instead. I will say that the bathrooms are pretty grimy; after all it's a bar, so I don't really care. I can foresee a pretty busy near future, but I'll try to be back whenever I can - Griff's is truly a Montrose institution. read more

It's very rough around the edges, run down - the kind of place where you expect a fight to break out any second (I didn't stick around long enough to find out if this happens often). No need to impress anyone here, it's all about getting your beer, shooting some pool, and watching the game. It's old, falling apart. Paint peeling. Everything is wood. Dim lighting. Crappy TVs even though the whole point of the place is to come watch the game. But you've got a friendly bartender and that opportunity to be a regular. Come around often enough and you'll see the same people every time. I came back a week later for steak night and had a very different experience. For pork chop night the bar wasn't very busy. For steak night it was busy. I had trouble finding a place to sit and finally had to accept sitting at one of their pool tables which had been converted into a roughshod dining table. I asked for my steak medium along with a baked tater. With the meal comes a draft beer. I picked coors light and was given a clear plastic cup that had about 8 ozs. In it. I guess I should have known that it would be a small beer. Anyway about 20 minutes later my steak arrived. It looked good but as I cut into it I realized that it was very rare. I usually order steaks medium because I am not picky and medium should mean that it will come out no more than medium well or medium rare. This one was kind of bloody. I would have sent it back but I was already peeved with the seating arrangements and I wanted to eat the food and leave. The steak wasn't bad other than not being cooked anywhere near what I asked. The potato was ok. When my food arrived I moved to another table and during the entire time that I ate the food none of the waitresses came by to check on me or ask if I wanted something to drink. Of course I did because the little beer that came with the meal was consumed 25 minutes ago. Finally as I had about two bites of food left, the manager ( I think) came by and noticed I had no beverage and asked if I wanted one. I said no because I wanted to leave. I then got my bill paid and left a 15 percent tip and headed for the door. I have to give this meal a 2 so I am going to average out the two visits to a 3. I know not to expect to much when you go to a bar for a meal like this. I doubt I will return and if I do it will be for the pork chops. read more

Was seeking a steak night and came across Griff's on a Tuesday night. This place was SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD for steak night. Rib eye steak, baked potato, and a beer included for $13 I think. I know it's less than $15...... I like my steaks seasoned and medium rare with just enough of a grilled flavor. They nailed it. Also the endless toppings on your baked potato are so greatly appreciated. You can load allllllllll the way up on sour cream, bacon, chives, and cheese. It's very clearly the oldest bar ever in Houston. It's dark and very divvy. The bartenders are direct, sarcastic in a light hearted way, and smiling. They love their job and value their customers. I came after a workout in gym clothes, no one cared. People are just there for food, friends, and whatever's on TV. My party of 7 ate and enjoyed our time and will most certainly be back! read more

I was meeting up a buddy for an early dinner/drink. I picked griff's. When you roll up it's not very pretty outside, and it doesn't get any better inside. By definition this is a true dive. But what they do have: solid food, cheap drinks, and sports on the TVs. There a small group of regulars, and you can tell who they are. Like every Friday and Saturday night, steak nights, Monday (whatever) regular. I think this was mostly because of the prices and the service. On Fridays they offer ONE DOLLAR Lone Stars! I'm not sure anyone can beat that! I know, I know...some of you may not be Lone Star fans, but you can be a fan of a cheap drunk! They offer a full bar with daily shot specials. The rest of the beer selection is subpar, but I would assume you are not coming here because you would like an ice cold craft beer. A DJ will rock your world on Friday nights and very willingly take requests, which get better as the night goes on! The service is decent, but it can get packed with popped collars and barflies pretty quickly on the weekends, so you may be waiting a bit for your cheap beer. Parking can get a little tricky. You are in a neighborhood where tow trucks are everywhere...so be watchful! A place where I can get a six pack for 6$ and hear the original version of "Groove is in the Heart" gets a thumbs up! read more

It's very casual, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. It's great for a long day where you just need to settle down and grab at drink along with some great steak and baked potato.
