One of the better sports bars in Houston. It has a bit of a retro feel to it since it was built in the 1960s, but there's a definite charm to the thick boards that form the floor and tables that have probably seen more sports seasons and St. Patrick's Day parties than most living people. The drinks are reasonably priced, but their happy hour specials are incredible. Their food is your typical bar food, but you can't go wrong with their burgers or their hot wings. Their fries and onion rings leave more to be desired, but if you're looking for a great deal on food, the Tuesday steak night-- 16 oz ribeye, loaded baked potato, and 12oz domestic draft-- for $12 is easily the best value in town. Parking is a bit limited in the private lot, but there's plenty of street parking available. Just watch the signs so you know you're in an area where you won't get ticketed or towed. In terms of events, Griff's tends to draw an older crowd, but it's still fun. Poker on Wednesdays is fun, trivia on Thursdays is a blast, and the DJ they have on Fridays actually brings in a younger crowd to dance the night away. For a sports bar, I'd expect more (and bigger) televisions, but you can tell that the people who come here aren't hear for the atmosphere, they're here for the GAME. You get a nice mix of casual and die hard fans, and everyone is friendly no matter how much alcohol gets served. The only drawback are the small and always-dirty restrooms. Griff's is home to the oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day festival in Houston, which now spans over a week with a golf tournament, beauty pageant, cook off, and more. I went here about four months ago and had an awful experience; this time was totally different. The wife and I wanted some crawfish and cold beer and we knew Griffs would deliver and they did. The crawfish were big for April and very well seasoned and the beer was cold. People were polite. They don't have crawfish every weekend, but their facebook page stays pretty up-to-date Live music was nice. My boyfriend and I have been coming here for about 3 years on and off. We like to watch the Astros games and we love that everyone is into the game. We never often because we never really felt welcome, but we have been here recently twice in the last two months, and things are so much different. We love this place. The first time we came in, it was the Astros and the Rockets playoffs. We really just wanted to watch the Astros, so we ended up finding a seat in the small room, in the back. It was really cold out and there wasn't any heat on back there. As soon as we were about to sit down, I can only assume she is one of the owners, came over and asked if we wanted the sound on for the TV, and we asked if it could be on for the Astros since there were two TVs playing both games in that corner. She said of course and came back and informed us she had also turned the heat on for us. She was super sweet and her twin is just as sweet. She checked on us and really made us feel special. The bartender was a little stand offish at first but then warmed up very nicely. We stepped outside for a bit, and she put a reserved sign on the table for us. The second time we came back was just last Tuesday. We came in for steak night and the Astros game. We walked in and the owner greeted us, we went to sit outside because it was a beautiful night and they had the Astros on outside. The gentleman who was our waiter, Tom, was probably the best server we have ever had. He was super attentive and very nice. We seem to have bad luck when we go out to eat with service or our orders being correct. He was awesome, we talked about him the next day, and even if the steak wasn't beyond amazing, because it was, he made us want to go back. We ended up moving inside after our dinner and it was great inside as well. The two owners were sitting and cheering on the Astros, and it's so nice to see people watching the Astros who are not bandwagon fans. It makes it so enjoyable! I came here because my brother said the wings were really good. The waitress sold me on the philly cheese steak; i should've gotten wings. I've had really good cheese steaks on the east coast and this one didn't compare at all. I did get try one of my brother's wings and it was delicious. The flavor wasn't a normal wing flavor. It tasted like a honey jalapeño, but not very spicy. I'll return to try more wing flavors. read more

Griff's was on Houstonia Magazines "Best Bars in Houston" list as a noteworthy sports bar. Then after diving into Yelp reviews about Griff's, I had to go. We went on a Sunday afternoon to watch the Texans game. I was a little confused as to where the entrance was located--it's a door plastered with stickers that camouflauges itself into the wall which is also plastered with stickers. Alas, we made it in. The place was jam packed. I was a tad intimidated because it seemed like there was nowhere to sit and everyone was already deeply entrenched in watching the game. We ordered at the bar and a nice Texans clad old lady pointed out the spots that appeared to be our best bets for seating. There are tons of TVs. Yes, as plenty of other people have mentioned, there is a veritable layer of dust, but it's not on like your eating surfaces or the chairs or anything. That said, I like my dives a little dusty, it adds character. I overheard at the next table that they had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich on special so I ordered that. The sandwich came with fries AND macaroni salad. The fries were sooooo good. The macaroni salad, not so much. But I don't really care it's not like I'm at a damn picnic or something. Our server was friendly and accommodating and it seemed like she and the bartender were a very good team. Another thing to note, free celebratory jello shots for every Texans touchdown. Come on Tuesdays for their awesome steak nights! Seriously a great deal... For about $12-13, you get a steak (12 oz??), baked potato, and a beer. My steak was grilled to a perfect medium rare - something I've strugggled with getting at some other steak nights. I love that they give out free jello shots if a Houston team scores. Smoking allowed on the patio out front, Your basic bar grub served all day and all night. Wings, nachos, big ol' burgers, even a veggie burger, chicken tenders and your basic salads. It ain't bad food. But remember a few cold beers and a shot of Jameson will make it better! Happy hour Monday through Fri from 3 to 7. $2 beers or $1 off your imports or call liquor. Parking can be iffy. Park only on the South side of the bar in the lot or on the street. Out back is a huge covered patio great for parties, steak nights, or their nearly week-long St. Patty's Festival. Griff's doesn't exactly exude "Irish," aside from its signage, and of course its huge St. Patrick's Day party. But with $1 Lonestar Fridays and PBR Saturdays, you'll find Hibernian hijinks just the same. Home of the best St. Patrick's extravaganza in Houston! Trust me, there is an event every day durring the week of St. Patrick's Day and the final night is a complete blow out and far better than the other their local competition - more live music, better food, cheaper tickets and most importantly - more space (they have a huge tent set up in there side parking lot) Does this place put the dive in dive bar - a resounding yes! It does appear that the posters and decorations on the walls are the "glue" that is holding the building together. That being said, that is really part of Griffs "charm." Rumor has it is that this was once a typical Montrose house, but Griff (Michael Griffin - who happens to be a heck of a cool guy and can be spotted at the pub very often) purchased the property and converted it into Houston's best dive/Irish Pub (of course that is just one guys opinion) If I had a complaint, the beer menu - not a huge selection but it will get the job done. Also, another "charm" aspect - all your drinks are served in disposable plastic cups. I'm not sure if it's a positive, but it really fits at Griffs. The menu is very much what you would expect, but I'm going to refference the standout menu items. Steak night is a must - $10(I think...) for a large ribeye (and you can watch them grill your slab of meat on the back patio), baked potato and a domestic beer. That's a bargain! Pork Chop night is also really good - again a lot of food. Finally, and probably my favorite menu item is the burger. It's on the regular menu, so no worries - you can get it on any occasion. It for sure cracks my personal top 10 Houston burger list and it almost makes it in the top 5. First off, it is huge and it really has that homemade burger taste. I don't think you will be dissapointed. The last point I'll make is that you will encounter random acts of live (typically Celtic) music frequently at Griffs. Meaning, there might be some kind of unadvertised celebration outside (this is not referring to St. Patrick's Day obviously) where you will have the chance to hear some of the local talent. In fact, you might even catch me performing there - just sayin! Anyway, the music aspect alone makes this place standout! Griff's. My wonderful home away from home. We love this place and come several times a week. We were "new" to this neighborhood (me, not so much but my husband, yes) so we made a point to introduce ourselves around since we knew we would be coming here on the regular. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. If you're a semi-decent person, you shouldn't have any problem hanging out with the folks at Griff's. If you aren't into sports and you walk in expecting to play the music you like and get upset when they say no, that's on you. If you like to judge people off of first appearances and are a little bit of a snob, you really shouldn't be here. There really is nothing like Griffs, and it's been around for 50 years. I am pretty sure that doesn't happen by serving bad food and having unsavory patrons, as some of these other reviews have warned against. This is indeed, a neighborhood gem. Football, karaoke, trivia or just a game of cards with friends - this is the place to be. The owners are hilarious, the staff is awesome and the food is delicious - how do they get those fries so crispy?? Great time, great food and never disappointed. Keep it up guys! read more

I love coming here on a Friday ($1 Lonestar) or Saturday night. It is super laid-back and chill. It's not a "classy" bar by any means but I have never been one to really care. If you want to simply enjoy a few drinks with some friends, then come on over! I'm not a fan of the inside due to the loud music and drunk fools dancing but I must admit, music is pretty good. Besides, it isn't very large inside so you feel kind of cramped. Now, I will tell you what I love. The outdoor patio is really big and open. My #1 favorite thing to do is play cornhole. Oh Griff's, how do I explain thee.... If you are looking for amazing place to enjoy the game, grab some good bar grub, and keep your tab low all while having an amazing time? You found it. Griff's lives up to all these billings. Griff's is mecca for those that watch any of the games. This includes any team. Everyone is laid back and you don't have to worry about the b.s. that comes with going out. Wear you team colors and just be ready to party. Everyone in the place knows their stuff when it comes to sports so be ready to have your own PTI (Pardon the Interruption) with some of the patrons around you. As far as alkiehol (I know I miss spelled alcohol), get ready because you are in for a treat. The bar has a good selection of draft beer as well as bottled beer. Each day has an great special. Sunday has $3 dollar you call its which make getting ready for the weekly grind pretty easy. If you are trying to be a baller on a budget, try Friday with the $1 Lonestar bottles. As for the food, you are in for a treat. I have literally had everything on the menu. My person favorites are the The Flaming Lips wings. The sauce is name after the awesome band and doesn't disappoint. The sweet yet hot flavor gives you a reason to take another swig of that delious brewhaha you are taking in with your meal. Another menu favorite of mine is the Chili Cheese Dogs. I personally hate all the dogs you get at the local stadiums and even *gasp* James Coney Island. These dogs are up there with some of the best in the nation (including Kauffman Stadium in KC where the Royals play). They serve them with Lay's Potato Chips making this a slice of Americana. If you aren't into the wings or the dog scene and are trying to stay lean, the Grilled Chicken Salad is on point. There is plenty of Chicken to cover all the salad. If you are like me, you want it almost equal so that you aren't just eating salad or just chicken. This is an excellent way to stay on that diet and still watch the game outside of your house. Plus there is always something going on. The St. Paddy's Day week is jammed packed with events. Thursday has an awesome Trivia night where you get a free appetizer for just playing. And if you are just bored on the weekends (or weekdays), you can always play Cornhole on the back patio. They have also host Ring of Honor during Wrestlemania 25 weekend and Total Nonstop Action for autograph signings. I even met Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle there and had a drink with Necro Butcher from Mickey Rourke movie "The Wrestler". This place is somewhere I have been patronizing for awhile and will continue to do so I have some rebuttals when it comes to other Yelpers. For the chick that couldn't read the signage on the East side of the building. Uhhh... There are four of them along the wall. Ignorance isn't bliss in this case. And for the U of F (Florida Gators fan), most of you SEC fans are total jerk ***s. And to make people get mad at you in this place takes a real class act. Bravo! Griffs is a dive bar for sure. My friend met us there and said "this is every thing I imagine when I think dive bar...and I love it!" The food is decent enough. You can add a fried egg to anything, pizza included. The quesadilla was large and well flavored. The fries are also legit. It's bar food, but well priced and tasty. It's been pretty busy, but we were mostly here during trivia. It's hard to judge the service accordingly, but they've been mostly friendly, though attentiveness has lacked some and last time the wait staff disappeared from out table at the end. Not a huge deal, we just closed out at the bar. Just don't be too impatient, order in advance, and you'll be good. They will make the shots into a drink for you. The roommate loves the orangey shot as a drink. The dublin mule (aka whiskey and gingerale) is decent enough too. Overall a great divey experience. Played cards against humanity (I brought with me), ate bar food, played trivia ( 3 dollars, 4 rounds, free nachos, free jello shots, lots of heckling, fun), and had a good night. My girlfriends and I enjoyed our night at Griff's but be prepared for a dive of a bar, one of the biggest dives I've been to in a long while. As expected at a dive the drinks are cheap and inexpensive. Served in plastic cups including the wine and not even the upscale solo brand. We went on Steak night Tuesday, 3 got the steak and 2 got chicken Caesar salad. The food was ok, great flavor to the steak but we all had very fatty cuts so the eating portion was very small. The baked potatoes were huge with good fixings. The salads both looked good and there seemed to be no complaints. The bartender served us when we first arrived and he was very friendly and fun to talk to. It got a little busier as it came time to eat and we got a new waitress, she was friendly as well with a bit of snarky-ness to her. I am still not sure if the snarky-ness was fun or annoying but since we had a great night overall we will leave it as fun. read more

Needless to say if this is how they 'welcome' new people, I don't want any part of it. Being in the industry myself I would never approach and act the way this lady did. Found Griff's on accident when I told my friends we were going to a record store and there was a bar around the corner they could go to. I was referring to Cactus records but then we stopped at Soundwaves first. So my friends found Griff's. I was glad they did! The place is weird looking from outside, maybe a bit off-putting but it's got charm. Dark and bar like on the inside, full of Houston-esque graffiti and stickers, classic rock music and bartenders that love to chat, not to mention the hilarious regulars. My favorite part of this bar was the patio out back. It's nice and big and well shaded. They have Lone Star paraphernalia everywhere, which I think is super Texan and cool. They have one beanbags (cornhole) set up outside that my friends and I had a great time playing at. I don't know that this is a bar that I would come to all the time but it's a neat find and if you live in this area I think it could be a fun any time bar. read more

Griff's is a great bar, but as it dates back to the 1960's as "Houston's Oldest (and Diviest) Sports Bar," I think everyone knows that. Trivia night on Thursdays with Vern is legendary--easily the most enjoyable trivia night in Houston from the moment Vern attempts to say each and every hilariously inappropriate team name (with various degrees of success). The owners, who are possibly two of the nicest people you will ever meet, are also routinely there and chatting with regulars and newcomers alike. It's a great place to go to watch Houston sports teams, particularly the Astros and Rockets. The place gets especially electric when home teams are in the playoffs. It's a place with a bunch of character, and pulls off just the right level of divey-ness to go with it's eclectic nature to make it wonderful. But Griff's is also a great lunch destination as well. They have a rather large menu for a sports bar. Their veggie burger, perhaps accurately described on the menu as "real meat's bastard cousin," is easily one of the best bar/pub veggie burgers in town, even better (in my opinion at least) than the one at Christian's Tailgate. They also recently started offering custom pizzas, which again are surprisingly delicious for pub grub. They also routinely have lunch specials during the week. The prices are beyond reasonable too, making this an obvious no-brainer for a lunch destination. Griff's is great, but again you probably already know that. Forget your $60 steak! For $12 you can get a huge steak, loaded baked potato AND a pint of draft! All the games are on the screens. College Football season is packed house with all the rivals galore ( actually really fun to partake in) and NFL season is a blast and quite rowdy! Plenty of places to sit ( that includes outside). Oh and one of my favorite things are there are free jello shots when our home team scores! They also do crawfish events during the season but you have to check the FB page. Mind you, Griffs is not the prettiest place, yes it is a sports bar but it certainly does the job. If you want to have good drinks, food and laughs, you have the right place. if you want to go to a overpriced swanky lounge type location with stuffy attitudes, have fun with that as well. I've only been here once, but it felt homey. A friend said that I wouldn't like it because it's divey, but I can hang at a normal bar LOL! The layout reminds me of Portland's Cheerful Bullpen - elongated inside and open space in the back with a tree. There are two pool tables, tvs all over the place, and less than 10 tables inside. There's lots of space outside. Outside, there's usually three tvs when it's not raining. I spoke with a couple of elderly women who seemed right at home, and it turned out they were the owners. They were friendly, we chatted, and they confirmed they can have a big screen projector if needed. The last time they had one outside was for the super bowl. I thanked them, sat with my friends, and the bartender came over. He gave us free jello shots! I thought that was a wonderful touch and a nice way to welcome me my first time! My bill was a little over $12 for two hard ciders and a little over $12 for one small bowl of guacamole and one small bowl of queso. Both were tasty. We were only provided one basket of chips, which were really good. Someone had taken the time to coat with extra oil and bake. I asked for a second basket of chips, and they were completely different. They had not been coated in oil and baked, so they were slightly stale. Even the guys could tell a difference. Nonetheless, I will probably be back. I could definitely see myself spending an entire day at this bar, having great conversation and good company! read more

I went here for steak night based upon a friend's recommendation. Upon walking in this is definitely a dive bar. The cleanliness was questionable. I understand the neighborhood bar feel, but this was just kind of gross. The steak was big, and it was served with a baked potato. There were communal bowls of sour cream, cheese, and bacon bits. Sharing the spoons to these bowls with everyone else was pretty gross as well. The flavor of the steak was mediocre, but I will say they gave you a lot of food. The first experience you'll have with Griff's is their parking, which leaves a little to be desired. The parking lot does fill up pretty quickly on busy nights, but thankfully there is plenty of street parking. It would be nice if they had lines on their parking lot spaces so that people would know exactly where to park. While there isn't much parking outside of griffs, the seating is pretty plentiful as long as you don't mind sitting outside as well. The front deck is a little small, but it can hold a sizable group comfortably. The inside has clusters of smaller tables and a normal sized bar, but the real gem is the back patio. When it's open (it was damaged during Ike, but they say they are fixing it), the back patio is a large tented off area with a lot more seating. Plenty of times my friends and I would sit out there listening to portable iPod players we brought with us and chatting. The food menu of the bar is pretty standard pub fare, but they have some specials that are amazing. I highly recommend the pork chop dinner they have on Wednesdays, it's excellent! All in all I really like Griff's for what it is, a nice place to chill and hang out with friends in a comfortable environment. Perhaps watching a game or playing in a poker tournament. read more

Grifs is known as the oldest continuously operating sports bar in Houston, certainly in Montrose. It's a classic dive bar and favorite for locals. Expect warm and friendly service. Nothing too fancy. Beers are cheap here and plenty of food specials (eg tacos steak etc). You MUST visit here for an Astros or Texans game day. There will be a great crowd and there's plenty of tvs everywhere. Vintage sports memorabilia from Houston history adds a lot to the character of this place. read more
