This is a great neighborhood bar just north of downtown Houston. The drinks are always on spot, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. They have a pretty decent selection of beers, and the bartenders can pour you pretty much anything you can come up with. This is a place I love to order the old fashioned...and when they ask which bourbon I want, I say, "dealer's choice". I've had several amazing old fashions here, and they always cost under $10. So I originally stumbled upon this bar in search of a steak night I was told about awhile back. I learned the company, Elements that prepared and sold the streak dinners had moved locations(once at Glitter Karaoke). Friday night Steak.. are at R bar! This steak was big and juicy loved it! The bartender said they had foil in the back if I wanted to take it home. Little did he know that steak wasn't going to make it home with me. It could've used a lil seasoning on the veggies and the meat to be perfect to my liking. There might've been some at the table but I was so hungry I didn't even think about it until it was practically gone. I had a Japanese mule from the bar , it was good, prices are a steal. It's not to crowded, outside and inside table seating, and along the bar. I'd come back! Trying the Peggy French martini next.. Also there are a variety of steak opens! This is a great neighborhood bar with several TV's throughout the interior showing a wide variety of sports (Olympics to college to professional sports across regions) to news channels. The higher than normal beers on tap always has a great selection from different types. There is plenty of parkin on the residential streets along with the front and back parking for the location. They on the bar wall that displays all their weekly and special events along with any sports games they will be showing throughout the week. He then proceeded to call the bar over 40 times in a row and on the occasions that it was answered, he either threatened he would call the cops (?] and on the last one, claimed he was coming back to "shoot up the place". What the Einstein failed to do was remember *67 before every call, so HPD now has his number tied to a threat of gun violence. read more

I live in Rice Military and used to go to this bar often before they moved over to the First Ward. The bar was was obviously build on a tight budget, nothing wrong with that but it doesn't have the quaint feel the other location had. The new bar is wide and not deep the total opposite as the previous one and just isn't as nice. The new location does have a better patio but only because your not sitting on a patio. The R Bar seems to attract the "smokers" so be prepared for all the nasty smell on their tint patio...hell even the bar staff is out there smoking. Speaking of the staff its a motley crew of individuals for sure certainly hit or miss with good service. There is even one older lady bartender with glasses, I think her name is Ashley, that gets completely wasted while working, and the drunker she get the more foul her mouth gets gets with "F..." this and "F..." that, gets sickening, especially if there is a ball game on and her team is loosing, pathetic really. The owners are two couples, the two Kelly's (females) are always very nice and cordial to the guests very nice ladies. One of the men seems to be the brains of the outfit or at least the hardest working. He is always on the move taking care of things in the bar, not sure his name. Then there is Matt, he is the rudest person you can imagine, he is usually sitting at the bar pounding drinks and if there is a Steelers game on and he and all his other drunks buddies are taking up all the premium seats at the bar you might as well leave because you will be treated like crap from him. The owners should vote to tell him just to stay home. They really missed the mark by not adding a small kitchen, the occasional food trucks are a pain and overpriced, they are missing some good profits without a kitchen just serving simple bar food. The "Steak Night" they have is not only the worst in the city but the most overpriced. The steaks are HORRIBLE, over cooked, over spiced cheap low grade meat. The prices are outrageous, they need to go around and see what other places are charging. I have seen a GOOD 16oz rib eye, large baked potato and a beer for $13.00. Prob the average is $16.00 and its actually good, not like the MisSteak they serve and its 20 bucks, I also saw a $25.00 steak on the handout menu there ROTFLOL, and yes I have tried a few times just to make sure it wasn't a bad night. They are the only bar that actually has a Steak Night on Friday and they are not busy. Why? Because it sucks, they could clean up being the sole Friday steak bar! I hope they reach out to one of the three steak guys that services the local bars and get them in on Fridays. Anyway, there are many better, nicer bars with a better staff and better food to choose from. read more

So I'm a little embarrassed to admit that we sat at R Bar for almost five hours on a weeknight. It's Oktoberfest time; can you blame us?! In all honesty, we were doing more talking than drinking, but the waitress never stopped coming around to check on us. It was crowded but not overly so. We were able to hold some very private conversations and it felt like we were sitting in our own living room -- yep, it's that comfortable. We eventually got hungry and asked if they had any food. The bartender smiled and said, "Just some frozen pizza that we stick in the microwave, sweetie." Turns out that the frozen pizza is actually pretty darn good! R Bar has everything you'd want in a neighborhood bar. Good prices, a large beer selection and lots of parking. Perfect for an easy, quiet night. read more

This is a cool bar in a nondescript strip center on Memorial Dr. Velvet Lounge is a little difficult to find, it's sandwiched between Texadelphia and Los Cucos. I believe it used to be a Cold Stone Creamery. There really is not much to it. Velvet Lounge is probable the size of my garage. There is a bar on the right as you enter. Tables line the wall opposite the bar. They have a couple of LCD's showing the latest in sports news, but one of the screens is dedicated to NTN Trivia. It's just over a year old so Velvet lounge is still in pretty good shape. The bartenders are great. They seem to know what each customer is up for. The happy hour prices are excellent and lasts till 9pm. There are a few beers on tap and they are all very cold coming out. And for all the ladies out there, they have an extensive Martini menu. On the weekends they have live shows, keep in mind the place is small. They will not have the local psychobilly band playing. It will be a one man acoustical set. If you happen to stroll into Velvet Lounge ask for Cookie at the bar, she will take great care of you. read more

This is our local bar and where we chill out at weekends and its walking distance from where we stay - what more could we want :-). Staff are really friendly and make you feel very welcome. They have darts board and weekly quiz and if you are a bit peckish then they'll heat you up a pizza. We found it by chance tucked in a corner on Memorial Drive between Westcott and Shepherd. For special days/events ie New Year, Superbowl, St Patricks Day they go out of their way to decorate the bar and make it an occassion . We were there Hogmanay 2012 and had a great time. Things were going really well bro the point where we considered just staying out there for the remainder of the night. Atmosphere felt welcoming up until my run in with one of the bartenders. after ordering a few beers the one particular bartender decided to give me attitude over tip. I understand that's how they make their money, but I was paying using my debit card and did not have much cash physically on me. Just lost my business due to a bartender named Matt. The bar runs a promotion on Mon, Tues, and Sat. As for Saturdays the bartenders give a different story when the promotion stops/starts. This place really turned my day around. To begin with I was in court all day Thursday for a traffic violation. After dealing with that nightmare I drove out only to get turned around and took a right instead of a left and ended up going under some railroad tracks and saw this cool little spot on the other side. My day had already been shot so what the heck let me drop in and get a quick beer before heading home. The place seems really new, I only say that because of how clean it was. Not sure how long it's been there but everything was clean, nice, and cold. Considering Houston felt like it was 120 outside this was a nice change.
