I really like this spot they have good drinks and do themes very well. Most recently we went to the 80s/90s party, it was very fun, very well decorated and exceeded my expectations. The bar staff is always helpful and work as fast as they can. I am not sure if you can order anything you want but they have an array of drinks on their menu. There is no food served here but you can order food next store and bring it over or have it delivered. There is a DJ that regularly preforms on weekends, he is very funny and entertaining. He comes across a bit intimidating at times but he is fantastic and is always cracking jokes, sometimes about you. I highly suggest going when he is preforming. read more

Definitely one of my fave neighborhood bars, They always have fun themes where the decor and drink menu changes, they have a new frozen drink every month, and they have great game nights too. Grey Matter killed it with the Home Alone theme for the holidays! As a Home Alone obsessed person, I was so excited to stop in here to check it out, and it did not disappoint! They thought of every little detail and it was cool to see something more unique than the classic Miracle pop-ups around town. The limited holiday drink menu was great and offered some yummy festive choices. I personally lived the gingerbread espresso martini. The egg nog cocktail was another favorite in our group hit its veryyyy heavy on the egg nog flavor and not so much on the bourbon. One thing to note, it is FREEZING in here! I had a great first experience at Grey Matter! The parking lot is small, but the owner let me know that parking in the lot next door is allowed. I attended an event here so it was extra busy! The space itself is a great size for a private event. It was decorated cute for halloween, and I noticed some drinks were served in science beakers. I checked out the menu and thought the drinks were super reasonably priced. I had a dirty martini (only $10) made with their vodka and bleu cheese olives. SO GOOD! This may be one of my new favorite dirty martinis. I really enjoyed it! I also noticed a frozen pumpkin rum drink that I definitely want to go back to try. If there's a local business to support, this is the one!! I co-hosted an event here and the Grey Matter Distillery staff truly went above and beyond. They really want to do whatever they can to help the community and I admire that so much! Now, onto the establishment itself- they are currently having a Home Alone pop-up bar. This is by far the most detailed pop-up experience in Jacksonville. I didn't get photos of everything, but they had the hanging paint cans, the electric coal starter on the door, a Duncan's Toy area, you name it! The drinks were excellent! I got the "Uncle Frank" and it was perfect; I'm not a fan of sweet drinks so it was festive without being overpowering. I also heard that the gingerbread martini was a must try. Oliver welcomes you in as you walk through the door! Small but mighty comes to mind. They offer Carve Vodka- I believe Oliver said it was distilled 7 times and it was so smooth & Live Oak Whiskey- wowwowwowwowwow. Plus the bar offers delicious cocktails to tantalize your taste buds. John ordered an Old Fashioned, true to form and even mixed in a cocktail- that whiskey wowed us. I order the Mayport Mule- topped with a splash of pineapple juice and it was perfect for a hot summer day. We agreed- this is definitely a spot to come back to and just sit and sip. We did grab a bottle of the whiskey- because it was too good not to add to our bar (which is full- we really need to say no next time). I look forward to returning and getting a more in depth tour- the sonic distilling process for the whiskey is so intriguing! The little we heard piqued our interest. I meant to leave a review in June 22'! I contacted Paul, owner of Grey Matter to see if it was possible to host my Hubs 40th bday there as he is a whisky fanatic, and I wanted a place I could also bring food/cake as well. Paul was unbelievably quick with a response and accommodating; he let me know a good time to come in to set up for the party. I was able to set up decorations (in consideration of taking all of it down afterwards) and was able to bring in food from ABBQ (near by bbq restaurant). I have forgotten the bartender's name that took care of us all, but she was very welcoming and offered a tasting of the whiskeys available then. We had a total of 15+ ppl come through for my Hubs bday, and we stayed well into closing time! We brought over pizza from REV and had a great time! This place is a tad hard to find as there is no sign on building and only small sign on door but don't give up! The inside is trendy and modern. You can atm we all the distilling equipment and while they offer tours and tastings we just had some cocktails. Some nights it's chill and you can sit and talk quietly with friends while trying their delicious cocktails, and other nights, like last night (Friday), we walked into a Home Alone themed pop up bar decorated like the movie and all the holiday decor. Stopped in the week of Christmas to have Elf the movie themed drinks. The distillery was decorated in Elf décor which was adorable and looked like it took a lot of time setting it up. I had Buddy The Elf What's Your Favorite Color martini. It was made with their vodka, spiced simple syrup, cranberry juice and bitters. I also had the Worlds Best Cup of Coffee which was a frozen peppermint espresso martini. I hope they do something like this again next Christmas. read more

I first visited Grey Matter last week w/2 friends up from Costa Rica, who like myself are dark rum snobs (go dark or go home)... However, the bartendress ("bartender Goddess" - possibly Bailey?) totally obliged our requests for a chilled, neat pour of each of their 3 current liquors for an accurate sense of their distilling skills, before moving on to their litany of tropical cocktails (please say you know marginally bad liquor can still taste great in a fruity sweet & syrupy cocktail?). And survey says: * Carve (or Crave) Vodka is a hit. A very subtle sweetness lingers on first sip, while overall flavor-profile & finish are crisp & clean. And unlike rum, where you start w/sugar cane or pressed cane syrup - Vodka can originate from a myriad of grain & white carbo sources like potato, corn, rye, wheat, and a few other cheaper grains... with potato & corn being the healthiest for your kidney & liver train (so sad - sorry to Grey Goose, Stoli, Absolut, Ketel One, Svedka, Finlandia, Skyy, Ciroc, Belvedere, Tommy Banana, etc.). Carve is "healthier grain - corn-based" - is "healthier liquor" an oxymoron?, and good for you each morning! Til now our previous 2 healthy Vodka picks were Luksusowa (Poland - award-winning potato vodka), and Western Son one of the 1st 100% corn 10X distilled vodkas in the World - a smooth operator... * Mayport Moonshine is another hit... rather unique in it's "white-likker flavor-profile", not what "rum-o-philes" would necessarily seek out, BUT pleasurably interesting in it's clean delivery. The 3 of us each walked-out with a bottle of this as gifts for friends. Quite an endorsement coming from the Rums-felts... * The Live Oak Whiskey was harder to pin down for hard-core rum-o-philes, as it tastes like, well, whiskey... which tastes like something funky gone funky bad... that's all we can say, altho it's surely not so bad for the "other people" who actually like whiskey. We all said it's a go (unlike NASA's Artemis-1 mega-manned launch scheduled & scrubbed yesterday for issues with rocket engine #4)... Mayport we have ignition @ Grey Matter! read more

This distillery is nestled into Mayport area and is a hidden gem. Grey Matter makes their own Live Oak whiskey and Carve vodka in-house. I tend to prefer bourbon over whiskey, but the old fashioned was okay. If you love it - take it home the whiskey for $40/bottle. The syrups are homemade and the Mayport mule was stole the show for me! I would highly recommend that drink. If you love the vodka, take it home for $20/bottle. While I did not try the espresso martini, they serve it in a regular class - not a martini glass. It's premade, but you can add an extra shot for $5. I overheard someone say it needed more espresso and was more chocolate flavored than anything. The bathrooms are super clean and the business itself is neat, roomy and spotless. The ambience was casual and theirs one projector playing tv. There's a couch, tables, chairs and about 10 bar seats. The service was great and the bartender was knowledgeable. This spot has been a true hidden gem since they opened in the summer of 2021, and I'm so glad more people have found it and are experiencing the Grey Matter magic! This is my every-other-weekend spot and I love their trivia and "name that tune" nights. If you go during one of their themed months, such as their current pop-up Christmas bar (this year is Home Alone themed) - you are seriously in for an experience you wouldn't expect in small town Atlantic Beach! From the personalized decorations and attention to detail for whatever theme they're highlighting at the time (retro month, pink matter distillery, etc,) - it's mind-blowing. Their bartenders also never disappoint! Not to mention their normal drinks and weekly specials... I just can't say enough amazing things about this local and family owned distillery. So excited to see this new distillery open right next to Reve Brewing. Nice bar and open high top tables are right in the heart of the distillery, you can see the still! The cocktails they offer are delicious and extremely well priced ($8 and $10) compared to the local craft cocktail bars in town who charge $12-$14 a drink. Great local distillery near Mayport, next door to Reve Brewery. It is a small location but it does have a tasting bar and a few tables and chairs. They make a vodka and whiskey which they serve neat for samples and in a number of mixed drinks at the bar. I had an old-fashioned while Crystal had a Mayport Mule. The vodka is very smooth with almost no burn. The whiskey was very complex and light on the follow through. We both enjoyed the whiskey so much that we immediately bought a bottle to bring home.
