First time here, and I immediately liked the simple decor, laid-back atmosphere, display of beautiful pastries... and especially the family behind Gelma. When I asked the owner what "Gelma" meant, he explained that the name is a combination of his wife's, his daughter's, and his own name. That told me something about this place right away... Gelma truly is a family affair. I wanted to love it here... and after this visit, I do! The Almond Croissant (9.0) was excellent... classic, flaky, and beautifully done. The Lemon Tart (7.8) wasn't my favorite, but the fantastic Apple Pie (9.2) more than made up for it. Wonderful flavor from the apples, and I especially loved the Italian-style pastry crust. Looking for dessert after a great lunch and we found Grelma. Tucked into this strip center, once inside it is inviting and enticing! We stopped here for some dessert after lunch. We'd started to go to another place in Boca but they were out of business. So we continued north on US 1/Federal Highway and found Grelma. Grelma is an Italian bakery and carries bread, focaccia, and pizza along with sandwiches, soups, salads, breakfast items, and other savories. But we were here for the sweets! After browsing the bakery case display, I chose an almond and chocolate croissant like pastry. It had a thinner and flakier dough than the French croissant -- more like the crispy layers of a Napoleon. It was messy to eat, but very good. I managed half on premises and took half home for a late night snack. My husband got a lemon pastry. He said it was very good. He had planned to eat half and take the rest home, but wound up having one more bite. His take home piece was tiny. Lol. It's really difficult to find a food establishment that is consistently excellent but Grelma is one of the exceptions and every time I've gone it never disappoints. On this visit we purchased a variety of desserts, breads and other items and all were great. What separates Grelma from lesser bakeries is the freshness and the clean taste from all their pastries. Grelma surprised me. Staying in Delray Beach from Washington, D.C. for two weeks, I was on the search for the town's best bakery. Yelp sent me to Grelma. Walking up, it's in a strip mall, but what isn't in a strip mall in Delray Beach? The pastries are behind glass and they are BIG and over the top. Because of this, I didn't think they looked good. we were going to have a foot massage and noticed this bakery and decided to give it a go. I must say it was very good. We had a cup of tomato soup actually a bowl. It was delicious so good that my friend took a court home with her we also had a salad of mozzarella and tomato beautifully platter, delicious tasting, and we had one of their mango peach pie, which was delicious. Not too sweet crust was good. Definitely a place to stop if you're into Italian bakery breads look delicious. My review is basically of the raspberry filled butter cookies, as this bakery seems more of a, maybe a cafe in Italy, without the warmth. I went in looking for cookies but saw a couple pastries, small sandwiches & pizza (?) Finding them not in a display case, they were labeled but not with a Grelma label so, not sure if they're even made in house. No matter, I purchased them and they were just okay. This is a really clean "bakery" with only a few tables, next to a Walmart. My only regret is that I wish I knew about this gem of a restaurant/bakery sooner. Nestled in a little shopping plaza, you might not even notice it - until you stepped inside. I was told about this place on a recommendation for a friend. From the moment you step in, your eyes will get bigger and bigger with each tasty item you see. This Italian bakery is definitely not your ordinary bakery. They had the full range of pastries (croissants, muffins, tarts), but also some Italian specialities. The other customers that were there were also very knowledgeable - and gladly gave me their recommendations. Their Italian cream and Nutella croissants were made for me while I waited (they had run out in the display case). Note to self - make sure to ask if there is something you want that you don't see - it might be fresh out of the oven and not put out yet. I got the Italian cream and Nutella filled croissants for my office, and they were a HUGE hit. Decadent, but not heavy or over the top (though very generous sizes). I also got their little individual pizzas that are made in croissant dough. A perfect item to pick up for an easy lunch. Everything looked and smelled amazing. Other customers also recommended their premade lasagna, that you just need to pop in to the oven (vegetarian and meat versions available). The staff was so friendly and helpful. This Italian bakery/cafe is authentic. The owners are from Milan and many of their customers are Italian. It was a pleasure dining inside and hearing all the Italian exchanges at the register. The place was clean and has a few tables inside and out. I recommend sticking with the Italian specialties. I had an egg sandwich on a croissant and it was meh. The croissant was more like a soft roll; however, the Parma salad was really good. We had it drizzled with balsamic, but other dressing was available. I was concerned their desserts might not be great as the cannolis are prefilled. The sfagliotelle was the best I've had in years. A beautiful display of sweets every thing looks amazing. I arrived early on Saturday. I chose apple cake, which is usually my favorite. The best one I had in Paris, reminds me of my mother,s cake. However here , it was so Sweet I simply could not eat it. I told the owner to try it, he refused, and did not offer an alternative choice. Lovely little bakery with limited seating. We bought the lemon ricotta pastry which had just enough lemon flavor. It was good. The milk bread had an incredibly crispy exterior yet soft interior. It was very good. The stand out was an exceptional cup of tiramisu. It was delicious and light not too overpoweringly coffee flavored yet just a hint to taste and the right amount of sweetness. I've never seen more gi-normous pastries glistening with jams and fillings, studded with nuts, fruit, and glazes. I ordered a blueberry muffin, and I could tell it was made this morning. Plump, some sweet, some tart blueberries envelop the semi-sweet pastry. Normally, I steer away from muffins for sheer weight-control reasons. I find them just an individual cake masquerading as a little snack, but not here where it truly is a light and fruity muffin. I just could not resist. Delicious. Moist. The owners are lovely people, and their skills are phenomenal with the breads, pastries, and sandwiches. We ordered a pizza slice (beware the Gorgonzola! Not overwhelming but you can taste it.), a pizzeta, Turkey on focaccia, and a prosciutto on Sfillatino EVO bread. The breads are so light and airy, they were all delicious! The sandwiches were so good they didn't need condiments. The desserts are European-level sweet, so they aren't so rich you can't enjoy them. Had time to grab coffee & dessert! AMAZING! This is an awesome find. I can't believe I did not know about it until this week. I read reviews and drooled over the pictures on Yelp so I knew I needed to try it. I went before 8AM to get a breakfast sandwich. It took a few minutes to cook so I had time to look over the other offerings. Wow. I ended up getting some additional pastries and a pizza to have later in the week, and a loaf of the lightest bread with a crispy crust that was to die for. The breakfast sandwich --prosciutto, Swiss, egg, lettuce was the best breakfast sandwich I have had on his amazing bread. I went back at lunch with a friend. Terrific sandwiches and awesome coffee. We got to chat with the owner, Max, a very nice (Italian!) man. After lunch I couldn't pass on taking his Lasagna home for a dinner this weekend. It looks great. This place is a great find. I stumbled on it going to Walmart next door. It is a true authentic bakery. Right from Italy. The oblong white bread (the one on the left of the breads ) is outrageous. We went back to back to get the bread. Its magical. so soft in the inside and not real hard crust on the outside. LOVE IT The sliced up some mozzarella cheese, roasted peppers, balsamic glaze, fresh basil and a thin slice of tomato and added it to the bread slices and it was magnificent...also lightly toast this bread. We wanted to try Grelma's for quite some time; when we got there it was a bit late (we drove first to their location in West Boca which is now closed, so then headed toward Delray) so they didn't have all the good stuff: they go fast. We still managed to get a good focaccia, and 2 Italian pastries (each) with a good espresso. Among all the eateries that called themselves "Italian" in PBC, Grelma's is pretty much in the very small group of "really authentic". It is also a quaint café', nice and relaxing if you want to chill and take a break from today's crazy life.
