Grelma surprised me. Staying in Delray Beach from Washington, D.C. for two weeks, I was on the search for the town's best bakery. Yelp sent me to Grelma. Walking up, it's in a strip mall, but what isn't in a strip mall in Delray Beach? The pastries are behind glass and they are BIG and over the top. Because of this, I didn't think they looked good. BUT I was wrong. I ordered the chocolate bomboloni (an Italian doughnut) and wow. The texture was very moist and the chocolate so creamy. It was excellent! They also sell coffee, sandwiches, and an array of sweet and some savory pastries.

When you are craving an authentic taste of Italy, head to the South Delray Shopping Center on Federal Highway. Tucked into an unassuming spot between Pinch a Penny Pool and a dentist office is the hidden gem, Grelma. The family that owns Grelma is from Italy. I found out about this charming bakery from an Instagram photo showcasing their amazing Italian sandwiches. By the time I finally made it to them I just needed an afternoon pick me up. The owner made me a cappuccino and I carefully studied their delicious selection of pastries that included crostatine, stella, cheesecake, cookies, and strawberry stars. After much contemplation I ended up choosing an enormous chocolate croissant that I couldn't even finish in one sitting. It was soft and flaky and filled with melt in your mouth chocolate. Grelma also sells loaves of bread like baguettes, Italian focaccia, and milk bread, along with pizza. One of their top sellers is trays of lasagna that you can reheat at home. Whether you are craving sweet or savory, they have just the thing to satisfy.

we were going to have a foot massage and noticed this bakery and decided to give it a go. I must say it was very good. We had a cup of tomato soup actually a bowl. It was delicious so good that my friend took a court home with her we also had a salad of mozzarella and tomato beautifully platter, delicious tasting, and we had one of their mango peach pie, which was delicious. Not too sweet crust was good. Definitely a place to stop if you're into Italian bakery breads look delicious. We didn't buy any and the cappuccino was as good as the gentleman behind the counter said it would be on all. This is a place to stop if you're in the area or if you wanna try something original Italian bake bakery

My review is basically of the raspberry filled butter cookies, as this bakery seems more of a, maybe a cafe in Italy, without the warmth. I went in looking for cookies but saw a couple pastries, small sandwiches & pizza (?) Finding them not in a display case, they were labeled but not with a Grelma label so, not sure if they're even made in house. No matter, I purchased them and they were just okay. This is a really clean "bakery" with only a few tables, next to a Walmart. Being from an hour from here, I most likely will not return, though the other food looked good, in the display case.

My only regret is that I wish I knew about this gem of a restaurant/bakery sooner. Nestled in a little shopping plaza, you might not even notice it - until you stepped inside. I was told about this place on a recommendation for a friend. From the moment you step in, your eyes will get bigger and bigger with each tasty item you see. This Italian bakery is definitely not your ordinary bakery. They had the full range of pastries (croissants, muffins, tarts), but also some Italian specialities. The other customers that were there were also very knowledgeable - and gladly gave me their recommendations. Their Italian cream and Nutella croissants were made for me while I waited (they had run out in the display case). Note to self - make sure to ask if there is something you want that you don't see - it might be fresh out of the oven and not put out yet. I got the Italian cream and Nutella filled croissants for my office, and they were a HUGE hit. Decadent, but not heavy or over the top (though very generous sizes). I also got their little individual pizzas that are made in croissant dough. A perfect item to pick up for an easy lunch. Everything looked and smelled amazing. Other customers also recommended their premade lasagna, that you just need to pop in to the oven (vegetarian and meat versions available). The staff was so friendly and helpful. I'm already planning items to try on my next visit (the regular pizzas and lasagna looked so good). Check this place out- you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely delicious pastries, pizza, sandwiches and coffee. Pastry shoppe is always spotless . Family owned and operated. Made fresh daily. As an Italian myself I can attest to the true flavors of Italian in all that is made in this quaint little shoppe. If you haven't already tried this place you are truly missing out! The service is friendly and inviting as well.

This Italian bakery/cafe is authentic. The owners are from Milan and many of their customers are Italian. It was a pleasure dining inside and hearing all the Italian exchanges at the register. The place was clean and has a few tables inside and out. I recommend sticking with the Italian specialties. I had an egg sandwich on a croissant and it was meh. The croissant was more like a soft roll; however, the Parma salad was really good. We had it drizzled with balsamic, but other dressing was available. I was concerned their desserts might not be great as the cannolis are prefilled. The sfagliotelle was the best I've had in years. If we had only had the bakery items, this would be a 5 star review.

Rabia J.

One star for the food. Minus four stars for the customer service. I truly believe that customer service in hospitality is very important. The owners make it seem they are doing Delray Beach a favor by giving their bakery items. First time I went with my son, the owners started freaking out because they thought my son will make a mess and the funny thing is my son is the cleanest kid I've seen. We made no mess but the owner told us not to sit in the sofa table since they thought my son will make a mess. Second time, I was just picking up bakery items to go and they felt like I was doing something wrong when I had a cup of coffee from somewhere else. Even though I was not planning to eat there. I'll leave the review at just that, I rather go to other bakeries near by to not get bad service. The owners need to take some customer service classes or something since they are rude and condescending. The bakery items are good but I would rather never go there again.

This is a #6 on milk bread with balsamic.

Keri M.

It's off the charts good. We got a #6 on milk bread with balsamic. We also took a few small trays of lasagna for dinner. Friendly service with great recommendations! Highly recommend.

Nataliya M.

Have a taste of Italy when you step inside Grelma cafe with a menu full of breakfast + lunch sandwiches, pastries, desserts, breads, and full time-honored classic Italian coffee bar featuring Illy beans. They also offer fresh pasta, pizza, and sauces ready to be cooked in your kitchen. I've seen two chefs running this bakery, so service might be a lil slow during a lunch rush. Lots of tables inside and out to sit at, even a cozy couch if you want to catch up with a friend over a cup of Joe.

I bought a $3.10 Snapple drink and sat at an outside table to consume along with a wrap I bought at the nearby grocery store. Because the wrap was not from the bakery, an employee asked me to leave. I explained I purchased the drink inside, but was still asked to leave. I would not support this busines. read more

I love it when we find ethnic places that offer really authentic food and this Italian bakery is definitely one of them! We had planned to go there for breakfast, but due to some setbacks (including driving all the way to their former location on Palmetto Rd. in Boca, which Google map still shows as "open") we ended up arriving towards lunch time. The shelves were not full when we got there, and we ordered their last pizzetta: a big piece (enough for two people) of focaccia bread with cheese and salami - which was delicious. However, by the time we finished the pizzetta, they had displayed many more freshly baked items, and did so continuously while we were there. Unfortunately, we couldn't buy pastry to bring home, because we wouldn't get back to WPB until night, and the weather is too hot to keep any food in the car; so we "had to" try some of their pastries right there, and they were good! (Same for their coffee, imported from Italy). The place is not very big inside, but it's very bright, clean and the staff is very friendly; they also have a couple of tables outside. It's located in a Walmart plaza, so parking is not an issue at all. read more

(I wrote the below review at the wrong location that is currently closed. I went to the Delray Beech locaiton which was amazing) Me and my wife came to the Delray Beach area for our honey and quickly looked for a quick bite to eat after swimming in the beach. We found this spot by pure coincidence and we are lucky we had. This is the best Italian bakery I have ever been too. Mind you, we are from Washington DC. I've been to Italian bakeries in New York, Boston, New Jersey, DC, VA, MD but nothing has compared to this place. After our number 2 and 3 sandwiches on freshly baked croissant bread, illy coffee, some pastries, I had to talk to the owner and find out what was the deal with the amazing place. This is a family owned business and they are from Italy and this spot has been open for 1 year now. After our amazing lunch, I had to get a box of pastries to go. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

Incredibly rude customer service. Man behind register was mad I didn't ask for a plate, he was very pretentious, when I asked simply if they served Chocolate chip cookies, he acted like I was insulting him! I am from NYC and have never been treated so poorly by a bakery owner/cashiere. Not to mention my tart was pure sugar, flavorless and overpriced. But the worst part was how aggravated the man behind the counter seemed to be, for no reason at all. Why go into business if you dislike people so much? Never going back here, no thanks. read more

This the one of the best bakeries I've been to and we happened to stumble on it while waiting for our car to get serviced. The outside is unassuming, but as soon as we walked in we were pleasantly surprised by the authentic, Italian, size of your head pastries. The owner is actually Italian and told us the most popular combination was the Crema Pastieeero with the cappuccino. We were not disappointed. We ended up ordering a slice of pizza as well, and it was the fluffiest bread we have ever eaten. 100% would recommend and come back! read more

OMG! you HAVE to go here! this place has served me not only the best sandwich, but the best bread i've ever had in my entire life! we came here multiples times on vacation, and were more than satisfied with our meals. the sandwiches were our favorite part. first of all, they're huge! about the size of my face. and they have tons of options! then there's the bread... the bread is absolutely amazing. every single thing about the bread was perfect. the croissants too! all the pastries here were amazing! they have more than just bread though, they have cookies, brownies, pizzas, lasagna, and a TON of full and tasty desserts and pastries. plus, the service here was great! every time we came here, there was the same man who would make conversation with us, be patient with us, and overall served us what could have been the best sandwiches in our lives. and all for a great price! the bread they have, is HUGE, and only costs about 3.50! the cafe itself is neat, clean, cute and cozy. 10/10 definitely recommend! go support this business! read more

I needed a special birthday cake for my mother-in-law's 88th birthday. After reading Yelp reviews,…read moreI chose Sugar Chef. I cannot agree with the other reviewers, and am posting this negative review in hopes of helping others. The whole reason I picked Sugar Chef was how they had decorated the cake I offered for inspiration. What they gave me was NOTHING like the inspiration. The only things they got right were the fondant color and chocolate cake. When I pointed this out to the rude person who brought out the cake, she took no responsibility for the errors, and no offer to try to fix the decoration. She only offered to refund the cost and I could leave without a cake...right before we were to bring it for the birthday dinner. This woman had the nerve to place blame on me, saying I wasn't specific in my order. Not only did I discuss what I wanted with Marie, but I put in an email exactly what I wanted, AND provided previous Sugar Chef photos I found online, as to how to decorate and another showing the ganache color. I even discussed dietary concern with buttercream icing as my reason for choosing jam filling. The cake decoration was so pedestrian and could have been done by any reasonably talented grocery store. It had a bunch of same sized roses ringing the bottom of the cake, not around the middle of the cake (as in the inspiration photo). To add insult to injury, there was a lot of buttercream icing in between the layers and very little jam flavor, and although the chocolate cake had a nice flavor, the crumb was very dry. Here is my original email specifying what I was ordering (edited for brevity): 6" chocolate cake Seedless raspberry or strawberry filling Fondant - the pretty blue color, as shown. Due to father-in-laws digestion, he needs to limit his dairy intake, so a lot of buttercream icing would be bad for him. Please use the Sugar Chef image as a reference for putting a decorated band of flowers around the perimeter of the cake, in colors that go with the fondant. Decorate the top with or without additional flowers, with or without "Happy 88th Birthday," or a combo. Most of all, the cake must be delicious. I was so upset, I ended up sending two emails during the celebratory dinner, sharing my dissatisfaction regarding the ordinary decoration that wasn't even placed where I requested, and again when we cut into the cake and I saw the large amount of buttercream. I felt in my rights to ask for compensation on such an expensive cake, solely on those order details not being followed. I didn't even let them know the cake was dry. It's been a week and I've not received an email reply, a call, or simply a credit card refund. Their lack of following specific order details, execution, and taking responsibility has forced this poor review. Shame on them.

Love that they prepare each sandwich to order, so everything arrives fresh and hot. As I waited, I found myself watching customers come in, curious to see which pastries and treats caught their attention. A French newspaper is placed on each table, reminding me of sitting in cafés in Paris. Even though I can't read French... I still loved the touch. The sandwich was served, and it looked amazing. Ana could see the appreciation in my wide eyes and proudly emphasised that she made all the gelato by hand in her kitchen in addition to the variety of pastries and traditional Italian meals. We brought our puppy today and he was given a bowl of water by Ana with a few gentle chin scratches. He also enjoys fresh food which was obvious as his nose was up in the air taking in multiple deep whiffs of the Italian goodies. Outside patio seating was offered but too humid today for that. Ana used the double cap chrome espresso machine to press the Italiano Kimbo coffee grinds into a beautiful floral print porcelain cup (see video). Ana brought the medium roast espresso to our table. The tiny cup straddled a matching floral saucer with a mini stirring spoon. Loved the bold taste and its roasty scent. These little touches go a long way and enhance the total experience.
