I reached out about a check engine light, and Martin took the time to ask me a few questions and help diagnose the issue without even having me bring the car into the shop. Whenever we have auto problems, we go here. The staff is professional. One issue is that there was an internal miscommunication about pickup and they had to scramble finding me a ride back. It is nice that they give rides. I went to a body shop place and they didn't provide rides back. They get back within a few hours and let us know if they find any issues. I had my car in for service at Younker Nissan in Renton back in January. At that time (I'd gone in for a redirection of my headlights) they gave me estimates for a new battery (tested bad), new front lower control arms, both were cracking, and a few other items. I chose not to have that work done at that time, over $2,000 in work. Today I went to Greg's to have them put in a new battery and look at the control arms. Guess what?! Not only did the battery test 100%, but the control arms were NOT cracking and did NOT need to be replaced! (PS: If they HAD been cracking it would have been criminal to send me out on the road like that!) At almost 90K miles it was recommended I change out my power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and coolant. All of which make total sense. I did that work gladly! THANK YOU SO MUCH GREG'S!! Called for a 60k mile service and was able to get in quickly. When I arrived for my appointment time, the front desk guy Brad, went through the different parts they check and may need to replace for 60k miles. But he did not go over prices for every single item needing replacing and only mentioned $800 at the very end of the list. Assuming it was for diagnostic, breaks and a few other small things (filters, oil). They ended up charging me $800 for spark plugs ALONE. That only took under two hours to complete diagnostic and spark plugs, and based on my written report, the parts for spark plugs cost under 100$. That means for under two hours of work they charged me around 700$ for labor alone! I called the Lexus dealership and asked what they would charge for replacing spark plugs and it was around $500- I wish I would've gone to the Lexus dealership in the first place. This place took advantage and charged me an insane amount for something that took so little time- I only ended up getting my spark plugs done at Greg's, paid the $800, and took my car to get serviced elsewhere for other things I needed done. read more

So I picked out a used Toyota Tundra that I was interested in purchasing and I got the dealership to loan it to me for 24 hours so I could look it over before purchasing. Normally I would do this myself, but my garage was a little messy and it was 40 degrees outside and raining, so I got lazy and decided to pay Greg's to do it for me. I have had good experiences with the Greg's in Bellevue, but now I live closer to the Renton location so I dropped it off there. I left them some notes about my concerns including a vibration at 30mph, the brakes being worn, and a few other minor items. I paid my $150 and an hour and a half later they had everything I had mentioned typed up and said the vibration was due to poorly balanced tires, and that I should throw in some fresh brake fluid and power steering fluid sometime soon. I didn't think much of this and figured I could throw on new tires and fresh brakes and everything would be fine, but boy was I wrong! $1000 on new tires and the vibration is still there. I made the assumption that Greg's would have run the truck on a lift with the wheels off to verify that the tires were the problem, but I guess that was too much trouble. Now that the 40 degree weather and the rain are gone and my garage is clean, I went under the truck to do my own analysis. On the rear end, I found that the carrier bearing on the driveshaft is very loose and the U-joints look really crusty. I put a shot of grease into each U-joint and water came out! I decided I better check things up front and there are more crusty U-joints full of water and my driver's side CV axle had a ton of play in it. A few minutes worth of research revealed a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin for my specific vehicle that specifies REPLACING THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL under these conditions. Boy, wouldn't it have been nice to know that before I bought my truck! I see a check mark on the PPI sheet next front axles saying they are OK, did anyone even look at this stuff? This has got to be $3000-4000 worth of work for a dealership to do, and I could've simply asked for that as a discount from the car lot, but now because of the incompetence of the technician (MH on the paperwork) and the lack of a response from Greg's, I'm stuck footing the bill for this. read more

Went in for warranty work on pulsating brakes. Said brakes were fine, but the car needs $1,800 in engine repairs. I declined and went to a ASE certified garage for a diagnostic check. Turns out no engine repairs were required, but the brake rotors were warped. My advice; Don't trust them unless the failure is obvious. A second opinion saved me $1,800. read more

My wife prompted me to check to see when we last had a major-mileage service done on one of our cars because a service place in our new state recommended some work and I couldn't remember when we last had that kind of work done. A quick phone call and it turns out that it exactly 1 year ago! So that just saved me several hundred dollars in unnecessary work!! Professional crooks took my car in for a misfire I knew the code charged me $170 to diagnose my car told me it was $1,600 to fix my car after repairing my car I picked my car up before the day was out my car cold came back on car was running exactly the same as before they fixed it I took the car back in they kept it a day or so and then called and told me oops we made a mistake on our diagnosis is actually your head gasket so I asked him why he didn't know that in his professional diagnosis to begin with since he charged me $180 for the diagnosis why he didn't diagnose it with a head gasket before charging me $1,600 for parts and labor I did not need he just robbed me I'm going to see if my attorney can look into it and do anything but go around come around beware of the crooks and then as I was leaving he told me I know what I was doing I've been in business 15 years will you 15 year professional you should have knew my head gasket was blown to begin with for baby you did know and just robbed me beware of the crook read more

I'm aware Gregg's charges a bit more than the average independent service shop but that was OK as what I was looking to get done was the same inspection I had them do when I purchased my Honda years ago. It includes a list of all of the parts of the car with check boxes and notes for each item. At that time this car checked out with flying colors which later cost me a LOT (expensive new hybrid battery, thousands trying to fix the "check engine" light and only made it to 162k miles now vs an older highlander I have driving fine well over 225 miles. In hind sight seems maybe a bad purchase). The car had been sitting for a long time due to prior inability for multiple shops to help me properly diagnose and fix issues with the check engine light. We had started to clean it up (aware it has been sitting and we need to do a few things). But ultimate goal is to just sell it either more "wholesale" as-is or maybe fix it up more depending if this shop knew what was really likely wrong to fix or at least have an honest list I can provide to the buyer so they know what is going on with all of the parts of the car. Before I brought it here we spent some time getting it basically clean by hand & a car wash, got an oil change elsewhere where they tested the main battery which was fine (we did jump it the first time but it was not longer needing jumps to start). We also knew it has sat and likely had animals able to access it so we asked this other shop to check the cabin air filter. No sign of rodents but definitely very dirty so we put a new one in. Then I took it and had the tires rotated and inspected where I always buy my tires (they are all good also). Then I come to Greggs. I left the vehicle to get the "buyer's inspection" which I have had them do before and includes a list for all of the vehicle parts and the condition of each. What I got back was nothing close to helpful, it did not include the inspection list I thought I was paying for (how is the suspension? Etc no idea) Greggs was very distracted that the car had been sitting and listed the codes from the computer (a list of every code we ever had not even able to tell which is current - I could have done this free myself at any parts store). The recommendation was that the car has such a serious rodent issues that they need to charge me over $600 in cleaning it up including replacing the cabin air filter and battery to even do the inspection they just charged me for. Just to note those are two things another mechanic either just replaced for me or confirmed I don't need. I now feel the shop wasted my time, money and is very dishonest. My family has used them for years but I will not recommend them to anyone. read more

We always take our cars to Greg's because they are so honest and professional. We took our Honda Pilot in when we heard an awful loud, grinding noise from the driver's side front tire. Had AAA tow it to Greg's and Brad and crew tried to find the problem. After extensive search, taking the wheel apart and driving, etc. the noise disappeared. They spent several days trouble shooting. Apparently this mystery noise has happened on other Honda Pilots. Greg's did not charge us for all their work and they didn't replace a bunch of stuff because they couldn't isolate the cause. Been going to Greg's for 2 years now. Until recently it was only basic maintenence. I just had a belt break, so had my truck towed there to get looked at. Took 36 hours to look at it (they said they were understaffed, so I can understand that), but then when it was fixed and ready to pick up, I had to run to the shop. They close at 530. At 450 I got a call asking if I was coming by. I said yes, I was running over and would be there in 15min. The guy at the desk gave me a hard time saying that's when he was leaving. Honestly, I don't mind paying a bit more for reliable service, but when the people working there can't be bothered to work the hours that are listed, I'm out. If you need to close at 5, then either communicate that or list your closing time at 5. Above average pricing, above average work, below average customer service. read more

Way less professional than the guys sounded on the phone. Threw my car in for an inspection and a diagnosis on anything. Poor communication for about a week, then finally I get them on the line. They say come down and pick it up we got a whole list of things you need to do to this thing. Me and my buddies thought 6 G's for some suspension work was a little ridiculous. Quoted me for all this stuff that wasn't even wrong with the car. The things they could see just by popping their heads underneath it while on lift, were brought to my attention but they didn't even take the drip pan off. Money grabbers for sure. They gave me the option to walk away tho which I appreciate. If you need an oil change fo sho go to Greg's. If not? Don't bother find a specialist. read more

I have been taking my cars to them for years (15 years). They have served my Toyota's, Honda's and Subaru's. Over the years they built a level of trust based on competence and honesty. Unfortunately the last couple of experiences have driven me away from them and I will no longer use or recommend them. They misdiagnosed by wife's Honda vans poor engines performance (they misread the codes) and performed a complete 'tune up' that did not cure the problem. I took it to the Honda dealer that read the codes correctly and they replaced the EGR value. That immediately fixed the problem. After I called them to explained what happened they didn't offer an apology let along some sort of rebate for unnecessary work performed. Then my son took his Camry in for a brake job where they replaced the pads and rotors with non-OEM parts that were better. A little over a year later both rotors are so scored they are not serviceable and he has to have the work redone, this time at the dealer for $500 with OEM parts. I guess fool me twice is shame on me. They lost a 15 year customer. read more

This place is a joke! Don't take your car here unless you want to fix it again a year later, when you find out they didn't do their job correctly. I went in to have the front CV axles replaced and might as well do the original clutch (with 177K on it) at the same time. All seemed fine until a year and a half later when the rear main seal was leaking. This was paid for and apparently done (but actually not). An OEM part was supplied and should last another 177K and with only 12k since, the leaking oil was causing the clutch to slip, effectively destroyed the clutch and it was time to spend another $1,500 to have all done again. Complete rip-off artists and kept triing to sell me some BS fuel injection cleaner. And of course "they cheaper by the case" and "we will sell them to you". Go anywhere else, please !!! When a co-worker brought his rig to them they unsympathetically turned him away with a lame excuse that they'd had problems with that maker. Horrible FIRST IMPRESSION & No CALL BACKs AT ALL. A few weeks ago, my front passenger window collapsed on the freeway, probably from a small rock, perhaps in combination with the high winds that day. So, prior to driving to Safelite Auto Glass in downtown Renton, I decided to stop by Greg's to get a quote. Upon entering, I see two guys: I explained to the younger service guy what happened and asked him what he would recommend to temporarily cover up the shattered window. He said use a trash bag. Really?! A black trash bag that would advertise the broken window AND not allow me to see while driving? Then, I proceeded to ask him for a quote. He wrote down my name & contact# but have never gotten back to me, even to this day (This is almost 2 weeks now). After reading several bad reviews by long-time customers, and the vast majority of them were 1 star (& many of which would've prefer a zero or negative star if possible), I would absolutely, under no circumstance, go to this place. These reviews simply confirmed my initial impression. I only stopped by Greg's because it's only 5 minutes from my home, and wanted to get a quote(which was never done). I guess they didn't lose a customer b/c I will NEVER ever go there. You can't lose something you never had, right? Just seems sloppy & very unprofessional. That day(TUES), Safelite Glass in downtown Renton covered up my window with a clear plastic wrap, vacuumed up the broken glass, and scheduled the appointment for THURS b/c it took one day to order the new window from Oregon. Highly professional & fast. For those who want a great auto service place, go to ARROWS AUTOMOTIVE in Seattle. It's only about 15 minute drive, and most importantly...they are HONEST & do excellent work. read more

Every time I need to get some major work done on my car, I usually bring it in to Greg's auto. It's nearby and they have a shuttle to and from your place if needed, which is really great since I wouldn't have a ride any other way. Rob, the store manager, is always friendly and takes the time to explain exactly what is wrong with my car and goes through the options with me since car repair does not come cheap. I have never felt like they were trying to sell me work that I did not need. I do wish that they were open on Saturdays so that I wouldn't have to take a day off work to bring my car in. read more

My Toyota 4Runner broke down on 405 on a Thursday evening with a failed water pump. Gregg's recommended a tow truck and the price was tacked onto the repair bill instead of having to try and pay out of pocket at that moment. Dropped the car off via the nightslot. By Tuesday my car was finished and repairs were exactly as estimated. They sent a car to come and pick me up so I wouldn't have to try and figure out how to get to the shop. They were extremely nice and kept in touch with me throughout the entire process. As a woman, I've gotten used to mechanics talking to me as if I were a child which is extremely frustrating. These guys never talked down to me. That alone is worth a lot in my book. I also never felt like they were trying to sell me work I didn't need. They stuck to what I originally told them the problem was. They pointed out an issue that could become a problem in the future without attempting to bully and up-sell me on it. I'll be taking my car here for future service and recommend to my boyfriend for his Toyota pickup as well. read more

Awesome service. Took my car here for an overheating problem. The guy at the desk, Ken, was very knowledgeable and very courteous. He explained in detail what they would do to try and find the problem. Once they knew what was wrong he explained what was wrong, how to fix it, and gave me a lesson in mechanics and fluids, which I found very interesting. When the car was ready he again explained everything they did. Signed me up for awesome rewards, and even gave me a little gift! Overall I had a very pleasant experience here. And! What all dad's worry about when their daughter's car breaks down. They're either stranded or held hostage by the auto repair service. I called the Service Manager, Martin, to find out what the damage was going to be and he explained everything in detail. I appreciated his remarkable customer service. We took care of all the necessary stuff and they also made a list of things that should be looked at later, but were not urgent. I waited months to share this to let my anger subsides However, It is difficult to forgive when a company put your life at risk by their shoddy work. As a loyal customer for almost a decade, I reached out to their general manager after 2 unpleasant experiences in a year. His response when he returned my call was: "Well... I don't what to tell you, my staff said XYZ... (then on to repeat to me what his staff had told him)". "What?? Wait manager, I had pictures and ... etc. " Well at that point you know it's useless, they cover each other up and refused to admit mistakes. I am very tempted to dish out all the mechanical details but it's also pointless. Down the road, no customer would remember the specific problem they had, but they will always remember how they felt and being treated. It's simple for you customers. If you are looking for a chiropractor for your car, this is the place, You need to keep coming back because they keep adding to the problem, and when you called them out even with evidence, the staff said "I don't know who told you this, everything is right, and it is supposed to be [while tucking the lose problem cable back in as we spoke]. If you want to be sure that your car won't work on the weekend, try a Friday also. The work will be half done and you will then have to return for yet another chiropractor visit. I won't be as mad if I didn't trust them for many years. I won't be as mad if I didn't care enough to reach out to the management hoping that they'll look into their staff issues. Sorry I couldn't recommend them like I used to for years. Now I hope that no one in the neighborhood will have to go through similar. Good luck. read more

Greg's in Renton replaced the starter on my Honda. It worked great for a few weeks, until it occasionally failed to start. Each time it would eventually start after several tries and 30-40 minutes, but the times when it failed became more and more frequent until we eventually had 4 back-to-back trips where it failed. I left the car with Greg's for four days. They were unable to replicate the problem and unwilling to replace the faulty starter or fix their faulty work. read more

I am extremely upset and unhappy about my experience with Greg's Japanese Auto. I have previously taken my car here for oil changes and other diagnostics and have been satisfied (but not over-the-top thrilled) with my experiences. However, after today, I am never bringing my car there again, and I will not be recommending Greg's to anyone. My car started experiencing an extremely bad problem yesterday evening. All of the auto shops were closed by that point, but I thought, I'll contact Greg's first thing in the morning to see if they can fit me in. Since I am not able to call while I'm at work, I utilized their "CHAT" function for the first time. I spoke with an employee named "Rob Roy" over chat, explaining my situation. I let them know that I could not make it there until 3:45pm at the earliest, because I work in Seattle (Ballard - I live in Renton) and do not get off work until 3pm. He assured me that they could fit me in and said to bring my car in and that it wouldn't be a problem. He said, "Ask for me when you get there." I should have known at this point that it was too good to be true, but I trusted him. Why would I have any reason to doubt him if he said it wouldn't be a problem to fit me in? I brought my car in right at 4pm because my car stalled on the freeway on the way home. When I arrived, I immediately spoke to "Rob Roy", who told me, "We can't fit you in because it's too late. My guys are already working on other cars." WHY in God's name would you instruct me to bring my car in, when I reiterated that I could not make it any earlier than 3:45pm, only to tell me when I get there, that you do not have time to diagnose it? I drove EXTRA today and spent extra GAS because I was assured that my car would get looked at. If the cut-off was that close, it should have been mentioned during the chat. If there was a possibility that I would have to leave the car overnight, THAT should have been mentioned during the chat. A customer should NEVER be treated this way. "Rob" did little to apologize other than to say "Sorry, you can leave it overnight if you want." This is extremely poor customer service and was a complete and utter waste of my time. Don't "make an appointment" because you don't know if they'll even look at your car when you get there. No need to even say whether I'll be padding the pockets of Greg's Japanese Auto ever again. read more

I brought in my car a while back and always meant to come o here and write a review. I have a 2003 Subaru Outback and my gauge was telling me that my car was overheating. My family has used Gregs Japanese Auto for years so I took it to them. They told me that I had a blown head gasket, an oil leak, and a coolant leak. They also said it was going to cost me 2000 dollars to fix. I of course was skeptical because I had a mechanic friend check all these things out when I bought the car a month prior and they were fine. I decided to have my friend take a second look (he is not just a friend who likes cars. He ices licensed mechanic) and he told me I had NO blown head gasket, NO il leak, and NO coolant leak. basically the people at Gregs Japanese Auto lied to me which made me furious. I will never take my car back to them. read more
