I had extensive surgery and needed a doctor that had skills. I had an MRI after months of pain and physical therapy. Assessment with Dr Chang was accurate, and he suggested surgery. Surgery was done in town. Numerous verification and health checks, physically and mentally. I had NO second thoughts. I knew I was in good hands. I was prepped for surgery. The nurse even offered a shot to numb my veins. Great if you are a hard draw or IV line, only ONE poke. Got wheeled into surgery room, chatted a bit, breathing mask put on..out like a light. Woke up in recovery and sent home. I was given pain meds but after couple days Extra Strength Tylenol was ok. Pt was done with Elam Sports, Dr Chang provided Pt guide. Within 6 weeks I am semi mobile, I now can do 100% Weight bearing with brace and crutches... on the road to recovery. Highly recommend Dr Chang and Steven Cocking. Nurse is also sweet. I saw Dr. Harris who I have to say was excellent. He took care of my broken foot and also injected my knee and my hip and solved some other issues. However, my broken foot was extremely painful. I took pain medication as per prescribed, I do not like pain medication so I tried to not take it as much as possible. However, at the beginning my foot was so painful I could not put any pressure on it or sleep however, when I needed more pain medication this office completely ignored me. I called several times and I was told someone would get back to me and they never did. I was without medication for an entire week and almost had to go to the emergency room, I just laid in my bed and waited it out until somebody called me one week later! When I told Dr. Harris what was happening he apologized. However, this same scenario repeated itself a month later I wanted to come in and get an injection in my foot so that I would not need any more medication, but I could not get an appointment and I also was having a lot of trouble walking, I called the office and asked for some pain medication and an appointment. They would not refill my prescription unless I came. I was ready willing and able to come in but I could not get an appointment! Then the doctor was going on vacation so I asked if I could at least get something to get me through the week so I could work and then I would come in. No answer. Then the doctor came back from vacation and I tried to get into see him but I could not get an appointment. I asked to speak to him on the phone and they said they would call me back and they didn't. He also told me to message him through the portal which I did, now it is Friday and I couldn't bear to go another weekend without any medication to help me walk. I messaged him in the portal. They read the message at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and no one ever got back to me. So here it is another weekend where I will have to lie in my bed because I cannot walk without pain. This is nothing short of malpractice, and I am disgusted with this office and their lack of communication. I saw another doctor in this orthopedic group several years ago for another broken bone and she was amazing. She always called me back when I called and she checked up on me after surgery. If I was in pain, she gave me advice and told me what to do prescribing whatever I needed in addition to physical therapy. As I said , Dr. Harris is technically very good and he seems to be a very nice guy, but his talents are wasted in an office with little to no communication. New hire, Alden took my temperature, blood pressure and weight then escorted me to Room #6. Dr. Fei soon entered. He's very easy to talk to and I was able to ask him questions I had concerns about. During my first visit I got a shot in my left thumb joint. Today I got shots in both thumb joints and decided upon surgery on my left hand after our summer Disneyland trip and in between child sitting the grand kiddies. Next time I see Dr. Fei may be in the operating room. The date of surgery was chosen on one of his Monday surgery dates and is pending authorization. Geoff will submit the request. I was told that even though we selected a date to have the thumb and carpal tunnel worked on I needed to be flexible cuz surgery could be cancelled from one week prior to the actual day of surgery. Oooh... pins and needles, needles and pins. Que sera sera. I changed my fur bebe's annual vet visit that was scheduled the same day. Fingers crossed things will work out fine. I was informed that the surgery is painful for about 2 months, plus the accessories of a splint and cast. Also recovery will take at least 6 months or more with physical therapy. I figured do it rather than prolong the decision. So much to look forward to so ...just get it done. If the surgery happens another star might be added.

Judging by Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga's reaction to finding out he installed a more painful situation into my back, it could easily be said that he does not understand the hypocritical oath or have the mindset to be a caring doctor. But care without follow-through is not enough, especially when a patient is suffering and waiting on urgent next steps. Dr. Mitsunaga referred my dad to UCSF Spine Center -- which we were grateful for. Unfortunately, a month after the referral was supposedly made, I found out through my own follow-up calls that his office had never even sent the referral forms to UCSF. A full month -- while my dad sat in debilitating pain -- lost due to office incompetence or miscommunication. When we finally got the first UCSF appointment scheduled, UCSF told us they never received the full set of imaging and documents required -- even though I had called Dr. Mitsunaga's office multiple times prior to the appt asking them to confirm the records were sent. They said all the imaging was sent (by snail mail) but as it turns out they only managed to send part of what was needed, but not all. As a result, we had to schedule another UCSF appointment, which brings us to today - weeks after his initial UCSF appointment - MONTHS after the plan was made by Dr. Mitsunaga for referral -- and UCSF is still missing imaging they've needed from the get go for weeks. I've now called Dr. Mitsunaga's office three days in a row (Thursday, Friday, and Monday). I left a detailed message with a staff member. No callback. No one answering. Nothing. The lack of urgency, coordination, and communication is unacceptable. Whether this is a staffing issue, a communication breakdown between the doctor and his office, or poor communication between Dr. Mitsunaga's office and UCSF, or a complete lack of systems - whatever it is it's causing real harm. My dad is in pain, appointments are delayed, and I'm doing all the follow-up myself just to move his care forward. This is not the first instance of a severe lack of follow up and follow through from either Dr. Mitsunaga or his staff. It's been a long road of just knowing if I wanted answers I would have to call and call and call and call - they would never take it upon themselves to call me except for ONE TIME a staff member named Taime called me back to give me an update after I expressed my frustrations to her over the phone. I truly hope Dr. Mitsunaga sees this and takes action -- because good clinical care means nothing if your team can't get the basics right.
