I didn't know colleague mopped in front of our work station and both legs flew up as I exited the swinging door... Torn rotator cuff. After x-rays and an MRI, took some time for worker's comp to approve this procedure and the day finally came. Was given explicit instructions prior to this day and after following them, I checked in at Minimally Invasive Surgery Hawai'i (MIS), which is located on the 6F of Hale Pawa'a. MIS is state of the art surgery center which has a team of professionals who perform orthopedic, musculoskeletal care and spine care procedures. I've never experienced this before and didn't know what to expect so I found myself asking my sister, who has 30yrs experience as a registered nurse, with questions. My concerns were alleviated as I believed in professionals and their knowledge and expertise. I was informed by the office of Dr. Darryl Kan and complied with the instructions provided to me. Upon check in I had my RN sister accompany me just in case I needed clarification and to ensure a smooth process. To be frank I was somewhat concerned as there was not one other patient in the check in area. It was just my sister, myself and the staff behind the counter. I was escorted to the back where I changed into a gown and received instructions as well as the attending professional reiterated today's procedure. Once again, nerve block was explained in simpler terms where I understood. It scared me but once again I had to trust the process. When it was my turn, I was rolled into the operating room where Dr. Kan greeted me in an upbeat manner and briefed me on what's to come. This was done over 8 months ago so I don't recall what happened after except finally waking up to some noise. The nurse (?) greeted and checked up on me. I was a little groggy and she must have read my mind as I was thirsty and hungry. I was offered an array of drinks and some snacks to choose from. When I was post groggy stage, the staff called my brother in law as he was designated to pick me up as I'm not allowed to drive after my procedure. I remember presented with non-slip socks and escorted to the 1F via wheelchair. Overall, I am very pleased and satisfied with MIS as they walked me through this process that was nerve-racking from the get go. From Dr. Kan, his staff and the staff at MIS, I was treated with great care and professionalism.

My journey with painful and swollen knees after running, jogging, hiking, aerobics classes, playing…read moreracquetball, and golfing began over fifteen years ago. Still, I stubbornly, or should I say "stupidly," held out for a year before making an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon my PCP referred me to, Dr. Jay Marumoto, at Queens Medical Center. After a physical examination and imaging (X-rays and MRI) tests, it was determined that I was suffering from bilateral knee osteoarthritis and torn meniscuses. After receiving the diagnosis, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about having the surgeries performed on separate dates. Still, I chose to have both knee meniscus repairs done in one visit at the medical center's Same Day Surgery Clinic. At my follow-up, I was recovering quickly with a great range of motion and experienced minimal pain. Still, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about the osteoarthritic progression and said, "See you in about 15 years." Thirteen years had passed when I requested to see Dr. Marumoto last August, because more pain and stiffness had returned to my right knee. Still, I decided to get knee strengthening physical therapy before our May 2025 trip to Japan and Korea, before deciding on a total knee replacement. The right knee strengthening sessions went well. However, on the second day of our trip, I exacerbated my situation when I tripped on a curb and fell onto my "less affected" left knee and face-planted. Luckily, I didn't need hospitalization or emergency medical attention, so I nursed myself for the rest of our 21-day cruise with affirming thoughts of scheduling a knee replacement on my right knee after returning home from our trip. When I confirmed my desire for the total knee replacement, Dr. Marumoto suggested that instead of having the surgery done at the hospital where there is more potential for nosocomial infection, he recommended performing the Outpatient surgical procedure at Minimally Invasive Surgery of Hawai'i (MIS). MIS is located on the 6th Floor in the Hale Pawa'a Building at the corner of South Beretania and Ke'eaumoku Streets. My husband accompanied me to my 8 am check-in, where we met the friendly and cheerful receptionist, Nadine. I like the electronic check-in process and completed it within a few seconds before sitting with Nadine to confirm my identification, medical insurance coverage, HIPAA protections, and estate plans. The waiting room was chilly, but I didn't mind since I brought a light sweater and wore warm, comfortable clothes. As the morning sun brightened and warmed the clean waiting room, I cuddled in a corner and caught up on reading e-mails. Soon, John, a smiling and welcoming nurse dressed in bright red scrubs, called me to enter the pre-operative holding unit/recovery room, where he took my vitals. Another nurse, Ameika (sp?), confirmed my name, birthday, surgeon's name, and scheduled procedure while settling me into a holding area with a warm and comfy bed. Ameika set me up with IV fluids and let me relax in bed with privacy drapes drawn. I also met with the OR nurse, Jackson, and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Louis Chun. Before discussing any information, each person confirmed my name, birthday, and surgical procedure. Of course, Dr. Marumoto popped in for a few moments to greet me and, I guess, to check on my state of mind since I was excited to get this procedure done. I last remembered being transported into the surgical suite. After a restful sleep, I awoke hungry and thirsty in the recovery room. Ameika informed me that they had contacted my husband to pick me up, and she got me ready to be wheeled downstairs to the porte cochère. Before leaving the recovery room, she provided me with an Ice Man Clear Cold Therapy Unit, although I had prepared reusable ice packs or wraps at home because we don't keep ice cubes. Thanks to the comfortable, clean, well-staffed, and knowledgeable medical and nursing staff, I'm on my way to a positive outcome. Also, because I had such a wonderful experience, I'm looking forward to having my other knee replaced next year, after another planned trip abroad.

I was introduced to my therapist Karly. Karly is an excellent, friendly, and caring therapist. She is very attentive, a great listener, prompt, and always accommodating. She takes the time to explain each exercise and how it helps and benefits your body. She tailors the exercises to your individual needs to help promote healing and recovery as efficiently as possible. Karly carefully gauges the appropriate amount of weight for each exercise and makes adjustments when necessary. She also provides different options, allowing you to choose which exercises are most comfortable while still being effective and beneficial. She monitors your progress during every session and keeps detailed records of your progress on her laptop. She continually evaluates your improvement and adds or changes exercises when needed to make your therapy more effective. Extremely frustrating experience with Central Oahu Physical Therapy in Aiea…read more When Central Oahu Physical Therapy received my referral for lumbar pain, I waited an entire month just to begin treatment. I was scheduled for four weekly sessions, with my final appointment on 3/31/2026, where the physical therapist was supposed to evaluate whether I needed continued care. However, it makes no logical sense to have an evaluation when there are no further appointments available with the same physical therapist until May -- over a month away. This completely defeats the purpose of the evaluation and continuity of care. I spoke with the telephone receptionist, who also acts as the office manager. Her primary role is reception, yet she presented herself as if she were a decision maker. When I asked to have the owners call me, I was told to look them up on the website. She is not an owner and cannot make final decisions. The owners never called me. Instead, Physical Therapist Erin deNeeve Baum, an employee of Central Oahu Physical Therapy, called and left a message. I chose not to return the call because I did not want to speak with her. Oahu is a very small business community, and in a situation like this, a professional and concerned owner would have made a courtesy call. That did not happen. This office appears to have a serious breakdown in communication between the physical therapists and the front office. Rather than coordinated patient care, it feels like a system where patients are moved through a set number of visits without clear follow-through or continuity. It gives the impression that the focus is on bringing in more patients and generating revenue rather than providing effective, continuous care After four visits -- the first being mostly measurements and only three visits with minimal exercises -- I am still not better. Quite frankly, this was a waste of time. A friend shared exercises given by her own physical therapist that have been more helpful. Also, with today's technology, you would expect more modern patient support. Instead of printed paper exercise sheets, there should be access to a digital platform with guided videos and progress tracking. These types of exercises are easily found online, which makes the lack of added value from this office even more disappointing. If you are considering physical therapy, do your research and look elsewhere. Based on my experience, I would strongly caution against choosing Central Oahu Physical Therapy. You may end up frustrated, delayed in your care, and no better off than when you started. Patients deserve far better.

WARNING: Injured Workers, Read Before Seeing Dr. Chen for an IME…read more If you're dealing with HEMIC or any insurance-assigned IME, be aware that Dr. Chen's reports contain false information that can affect your claim and deny you treatment. * Major errors & contradictions: My IME report falsely stated I had arthritis in my neck (I don't), even though no medical records support this. * Dismisses real injuries: My herniated discs, pinched nerves, and entrapped nerve were downgraded to "muscle strains"--industry-related but not caused by my job, according to him. * Requests unnecessary testing: He recommended testing on unrelated body parts, seemingly to undermine my actual injuries. * Denials based on false IME: Every treatment denial I received listed Dr. Chen's name as the reason I couldn't see a specialist or get proper care. I requested corrections, sent proof, and was ignored. Instead, I was told I'd have to pay for another IME out of pocket. If you're required to see Dr. Chen, protect yourself: Bring a witness Record the visit (if allowed) Request his report ASAP & compare it to your real medical records DO NOT assume his evaluation will be fair. If you've experienced a false IME, consider filing a complaint with RICO. Injured workers deserve honest medical evaluations--not biased reports that block access to care.

Check in and out is always smooth and efficient. We typically go to the Aiea office; they're in that office M, W, and F, but I believe Dr. Tada is only there on Fridays. Perfect for our schedule. I first heard of Dr Tada from my CRPS support group. They all raved about his knowledge of CRPS, which is a feat in itself as a rare and poorly understood condition with the worse pain known to man. Most of the doctors I had encountered had never even heard of it, much less able to treat it. The only other doctors I found to have significant knowledge on the condition were the doctors at the pain management center at UCSF. Unfortunately, my insurance changed to a company that didn't have UCSF in network. I tried a few doctors on Oahu, but even those who had knowledge of CRPS proposed solutions that were either debunked or had never been widely used in the case of CRPS. And sadly with CRPS, incorrect treatment often leads to spread or worsening of the condition. Hence the dire need for knowledgeable doctors. Not only is Dr. Tada knowledgeable about CRPS but he has had several years and several patients experience. I have since received more helpful solutions than I ever thought possible. Treatment of CRPS is extremely dependent on a case by case basis. Medications that work for one patient they have an opposite effect in another patient. Some patients can tolerate touch while others can barely tolerate a breeze. In some patients it can go into remission while another patients it can cause lifelong debilitating issues. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category, but with a Dr. Tada, I am able to have an unbelievable quality of life despite the pain. He doesn't just treat a small part of the condition as most doctors do. He treats the patient as a whole.
