This market is actually a historical landmark of Mentone California. It's been there for over 100 years, starting as a blacksmith shop and later in the early 1900s selling groceries. It is a place to see if you are going to Big Bear. They sell the best jerky I have ever tasted in my entire life. It's worth the drive just to buy the jerky. They also have soda, pops and chips and miscellaneous groceries. Anyone can get their fishing tackle there, also bait or even their fishing license, make sure to get your fishing license before you go fishing because you will get a ticket. They do check at the local lake. You can pick up miscellaneous groceries for your ice chest and a six pack of beer. It starts the bottom of the mountain so if it's snowy, you can always buy some chains there if you need them to finish your trip. They have exceptional service and kind people working there. I stop into the store every time I drive up the mountain. They also sell their jerky mail order. The ambience is very rustic and homey and comfortable. I highly recommend you visit. read more

Green spot is our favorite stop before we head to the cabin. It's almost upsetting if we are too late or too early for the store hours. If you are a Jerky fan- then make this your mountain road snack! With several different options and flavors they can quench any taste bud's thirst. I may have an unhealthy obsession with the jerky from here. I usually will get the Hot and Good, Original, and Cowboy. I have tried almost all of them but these are my top 3 go to. Yes It's pricey but definitely worth it. I have tried most stores brands and online brands for beef jerky and this is my favorite. In additional to the jerky, we have to get pickles and the hand poured soap. I like the people that work here. Very laid back and friendly. Came here on our way to Big Bear because we were drawn by the "Worlds best Jerky" sign. They were not kidding. Not only were the people incredibly patient and kind as we asked every question we could think of about their jerky, but they really live up to the name. Went here with my friend after a hike. When we went in, there was crap everywhere. It was a maze to get anywhere and looked very dingy. The old white guy who was stacking nuts asked us what language we spoke. I ignored him but my friend answered, "ENGLISH." He continued to be RACIST and IGNORANT by guessing her ethnicity saying, "Korean? Japanese?" Dude take a damn hint and STOP TALKING, YOU IDIOT. When he finally guessed right, he attempted to say "ni hao." My friend informed him that she speaks a different dialect but he continued to sound uneducated by asking her, "Do people ask you how your knee is?" and pointed to his knee. What a dumbass... worker? Owner? Low grade human! With everything going on right now with racism and injustice, I am appalled by my experience here. Garys son, forgot his name showed me some love and even threw in the tensioners for free. Well the chains fit perfect and got a serious use from Redding Calif to Ashland Oregon. As we got inside we noticed a line on a Friday afternoon at 3:00pm people waiting for jerky. Line of 5 before us. Line went by fast. You pay by the LB. or less. Depending on what flavor you want & any flavor is good. Trust me my favorite was sweet and spicy. Make sure to put it in a zip-lock bag bc it will get dry fast. I can't attest to the quality of the beef jerky, or anything else, because I didn't stay very long. It was bad enough that none of the customers were masked when I was in the store, but neither were either of the two employees. Not only that, but the guy serving the jerky didn't even use gloves. Yes, he was using tongs, but still, even before Covid one would think he would use food grade gloves, but during a pandemic, I would think it would be an absolute. I can't help thinking if this is the level of hygiene during a pandemic, how would it be during normal times? I realize that for some my comment will encourage them to visit this establishment to show support for rebelling against the rules, but for those who care, I figure you can save yourself the trip. read more

Literally one of my favorite jerky places ever,.. not just as a jerky store but the jerky itself is just great

So I was on a Route 66 trip. I carefully followed the road I had deduced was Route 66. I guess I missed a turn. While I was here, I found that the people inside were super nice and awesomely helpful. I also discovered that I was a shade over sixteen miles past a turn I should have turned on. From what I've been told, people steal Route 66 signs. This adventure is turning out to be harder than I thought it would be. I parked and walked into this place. Looking around, it's a quaint lil shop. Reminds me of stores from campgrounds. Wood. Stuff piled up. Looks like it's been here for ages. Probably has been here for ages. I walked in and asked the two people behind the counter if either of them knew where I was.....or where Route 66 was in relation to me. They looked at each other questioningly. The woman told me that they had maps, and she took one off a shelf and we began to look at it to answer my question. She was pointing at things on the map and I was using her inputs to figure out where I had missed my turn. Eventually, between her excellent directions, and my google savvy. I had the google girl giving me directions to that point where I zigged when I should have zagged. The sign outside above the spot I had parked in had said "World Famous Jerky!" and I enjoy a good jerky. So I got a small piece. It was actually pretty darn tasty. Well worth the title. I really do enjoy being on my adventures, and I don't really mind getting completely lost and turned around on them. As sometimes you get to find awesome lil out of the way places like this. I grew up with Green Spot as part of the weekly routine of driving from the mountain down to Stater Bros for groceries. The jerky has been a treat that I have given myself year after year even living in Canada and the PNW. It really is that memorable. Over the last, I would say decade or so though, the price has shot up even though the processing is outsourced for volume. The flavor is similar to what it was and is still great, but I don't get the same nostalgic feeling when I pay extra premium price for mass produced product. As a side not on the trip up the mountain, don't buy boxed ice cream. The lower air pressure will make the box burst. But you do kind of get free ice cream because it expands so much. read more
