The Greene Grape is a godsend in our neighborhood for many reasons, mainly the excellent meat and cheese counter. Too bad the produce consistently is a let down. Not that the prices in that area aren't up to the stor's rather high end of the spectrum, but unlike the rest of the store where a few extra dollars guarantees great quality, the produce is pretty low quality for what you get. Sure it's organic and responsibly sourced, but it is often unrepentant or rotten, or just plain mediocre. They should be able to do better. read more

I am giving Provisions 4 Stars and a special mention for most improved produce department. I used to shop at Provisions about once a month when I wanted specialty cheese or deli items, but that was about it. In the past few months, though, they have really gotten their produce department in order, and now I shop there every other day. The produce used to be something of a joke, but the quality has greatly improved, and the prices are generally quite competitive (I used to sell produce years ago, so I pay attention to these things). They also sell a delicious selection of fresh bread. The staff are generally friendly and knowledgeable. The cheesemongers are top notch. There is room for improvement here, but on the whole, I think the store is smartly managed and willing to evolve in the right ways to suit its customer base. Nice work. I do have one product request: more olive varieties would be nice, maybe some Castelvetranos? read more

I want to love this place. The people are nice. The coffee is top notch. But the prepared foods are average. The soups and (unimaginative) salads are extremely overpriced. Especially for greens that aren't organic. Recently they stopped including two tiny pieces of baguette with their soups and 'salads'. But I kept going back. Until today. I asked why the salad dressing looked funny, they claimed it was cold and that the dressing separates. I said how it never looked that way before, but they just shrugged. A few mins later, I poured it over my salad and it tasted awful, bitter and made me feel sick. Bummer experience overall. read more

After living in France for a year and moving my frenchie husband to BK, I needed a fresh butcher. Yes, this is a very pricey spot for everything else. But my go to for fresh, sustainable meats and cheeses. I don't shop here for much else...maybe grassfed milk, but that's it. Bottom line, never had a bad cut and guaranteed freshness. Well worth the cost. I go out of my way to buy meats here once a week. The wine shop next door is great all round! read more

dear people comparing this place to pathmark, go watch food, inc or king corn. though i really can only speak to the meat and cheese, i don't think it's overpriced for what you are getting (high quality and the expertise and stamp of approval of the butcher and cheesemonger) if you want to eat animals that hung around in a feed lot, munching it's way to death on gmo corn, then by all means, go to pathmark. grass fed animals are leaner and healthier which in turn makes humans leaner and healthier. you know, for when cannibalism is legalized... i do wish this place sourced more LOCAL goods. i talked to the butcher about this and it sounds like there are legitimate limitations to the store's ability to stock local meat, BUT carrots from california and packaged salad greens. come on greene grape, do your part! you should really be stocking as much local produce as you can. i buy at greenmarkets as much as i can, but when i just don't have time to get to union square for meat and cheese, this an excellent option. read more

The owner must read these because I've seen improvement based on the feedback here. My biggest complaint about this place is the customer service. behind the cashier counter. If I'm going to pay high prices for good quality products, I want good quality customer service as well. Some of the staff is ridiculous. They remind me of entitled teenagers who's parents forced them to get summer jobs against their will. Recently while making a purchase, the cashier never even acknowledged me when I approached the counter, he didn't offer me a bag - though I didn't need one (and I know they hate to waste bags at Provisions). and then started ringing in the next person while I was still standing there. I asked if I needed to sign my credit card receipt, and he said "no" as in "um, duh, no". No thank you, no goodbye or anything.... The "No" was the only word he uttered to me during the entire transaction. Um, why do you think this is ok? On the other hand - the staff serving cheese and meats are always pleasant. They always greet me with a friendly smile and good food advice when asked. Below is my old review... It still stands. Snobbery at its most annoying. It would not hurt the management/owners of Provisions to school their employees on courtesy and general customer service. Unfortunately Provisions is the only shop of its kind in the neighborhood. As a long time resident of Fort Greene, I was very excited when Provisions opened a few years ago. I find most of the employees at Greene Grape to be snobby and obnoxious. Not all of them, but for the prices of there food, I feel everyone should be friendly and less condescending. The coffee ain't all that, and does NOT warrant the price. I prefer the coffee down the street at Fresh Garden. I am a very green, carbon footprint friendly person, but when i obviously don't have my own shopping bag, and have just purchased a lot of groceries, don't ask me judgmentally if I need a bag. Yes I do. And I'll recycle it too. But sometimes I stop by on my way home from work without my own tote. I wish there were other options in the neighborhood with fresh meat, but as Provisions is my only option, I'll begrudgingly continue to shop there. It's an absolute delight to shop here. The produce section is well stocked with local and organic options. The deli has fresh enticing options. But the real highlight is the meat counter - a wide variety of choices of grass-fed and organic meats. The taste, options, and variety puts this at the top of the top-end butchers. My favorite cut is the lamb loin chop. Friendly and helpful service on top of this. All this makes this well worth the trip from surrounding neighborhoods. read more

Great options from meat to dry goods to produce. It's always great to know you're buying ethically farmed meat! And cheese! Lots of great snacks too. It can get really congested as the layout isn't super great for more than two or so people browsing an area at any given time, but if you can avoid the weekends, it's not too crazy. read more

I can deal with the high prices as their meat is superb. I can even deal with the rude supervisor in the meat section. What I can't deal with is the freezing (i'll add unenvironmental and therefore hypocritical) temperature the store is kept at. Every time I go onside this store I begin shivering uncontrollably . I assumed this was a store that cared for the environment, therefore selling local produce, but the temperature that the store is kept at (probably at 50 degrees) only proves to me that this store exists because these foods are thought to be trendy. The owners of this store clearly do not care for the environment or the health and well being of their employees. Please don't respond that the temperature is difficult to control because of the refrigerators as all you have to do is get plastic curtains, probably a $200 expense. read more

i like to drop in and just look at their meat and fish counters.. so fresh and pristine... and tempting! the prices are too high (comparable to full-priced whole foods) for me to always pick something up, but there are a few deals to be found: boxed organic baby arugula ($3-4), leftover bits of cheese ($3-6) -- good for sampling at home, and just the fact that they have 'it's it' makes me extremely happy. downside is the produce.. i popped in once to pick up a banana for breakfast.. but they only had banged up, brown specimens. no thanks! i've also seen nearly rotting potatoes and grapes there... the service is great. even when i stopped in on thanksgiving morning at 8am, the counter people were helpful and perky.. not at all bitter to be working a holiday... read more

I like this place even though it is kind of beyond my budget. It is about a 1 1/2 blocks from my apartment. I go there for specialty meat and fish. Everything is non-antibiotic, organicly raised food stuff. I just got a nice piece of skirt steak and a couple pieces of fresh Hadock, milk and snack, which came to about $30. This is a bit much, I could have gotten it less at Pathmark which is 2 1/2 blocks away, but it would not have been the quality nor would have been organically raised and processed. I am a person who is trying my best to eat and do right by my body (most of the time). I have 4 servings of meat and fish, which is for 4 meals under $30. Not bad. So I give would give them 5 stars for quality, but only 4 stars because of the high prices. The service is friendly and nice. I love their cheeses which are very good and tasty, but a bit pricy also. It's expensive. I try to only go here when I need a very specific thing. Produce is actually not too pricey, especially if you're buying in season stuff. The staff is really friendly and helpful. The curry chicken salad is great, and the coffee is good and cheaper than their across the street partners. My one real bone to pick is this: the little cheese box of leftovers is not any cheaper than if I just asked for exactly that much cheese. Isn't the whole point of selling the ends of the cheeses to mark it down a little so it gets sold? It just makes me sad because I have to check them out when I go in, but I never get anything cause it's not a deal. read more

The produce is terribly overpriced, and often doesn't even seem to be good quality. I used to love this place. Then I bought some overpriced chicken that smelled funny.... Then I bought some cherry tomatoes that were moldy.... Finally, I bought $20/lb. shrimp that had an awful taste when I cooked it. Same quality as Pathmark, just higher prices. read more

Greene Grape Provisions is wonderful. I often come in for a few supplies or a sandwich/pre-made food and everything is always delicious, but tonight they went above and beyond! We came in at 5pm (on New Years Eve) looking for scallops to cook for guests tonight, and they were unfortunately out. However, the man behind the counter told us he had set aside 9 scallops for himself and his two guests for the evening, but he would happily let us take them and he would find something else to make for dinner. We debated back and forth and started to call another market, but he assured us that at 5pm on New Years Eve, we'd be hard pressed to find any other market with scallops left. He was so kind and generous and made our New Years Eve dinner wonderful- thank you! read more

I usually shop at the wine store or the Annex more than Provisions because the staff in those locations are more professional. I love the store itself because they have EVERYTHING i need, however, the customer service from management sucks. Especially Sunday mornings. The males that work in the store are not only unprofessional but doesn't like to give assistance when needed. I could walk up to a counter & those staff would be so helpful but the 1s walking around are not so helpful. I asked a gentleman at the butcher shop for a manager because I had a complaint & the gentleman they directed me to happens to be calling another employee there a "Bitch ass Nigger" at the same exact time I'm walking towards him. I didn't even get to ask his name because I didn't want to associate myself with someone who uses that type of language. He was short, African American & was wearing The companies attire. This is the 2nd time I was directed to this same person who was either cursing at staff or saying he rather be elsewhere than at work. I then proceeded to checkout and a young lady,whom was very sweet at the register by the door was able to assist me with the gentleman's name, Otis, who's actually the General Manager. It saddens me that this generation is still using that word as if it's actually someone's name. Greene Grape SHOULD be training their management team as well as staff on how to be respectful to one another and the customers. I really hope the owner takes care of this situation. I don't think I feel comfortable shopping in this store again. Only god knows what other things the GM is saying to the staff. read more

I get the feeling that anyone reading comments that Provisions is overpriced probably think "oh, they're probably *just a little* overpriced because they are of higher quality". But I wanted to give everyone a sense of scale of how just how INSULTINGLY overpriced they are, even for a fairly financially comfortable organic/local farmer supporting foodie who rarely bats an eyelid paying for quality foods. A simple example should do it: Natural, Antibiotic free Chicken Legs at Citerella's - $2.99/lb Natural, Antibiotic free Chicken Legs at Provisions - $5.99/lb Get this, Citerella's is actually a manhattan-based high-end grocer. Had I not bought the same ingredient on the same day from both places because of an unexpected guest, I wouldn't even have noticed just how ridiculous the prices are at Provisions. I had been shopping at Provisions averaging 2-3 times a week over the last year and a half, even strongly recommending them to friends. Now, I just feel stupid. I understand that they might be a smaller player and likely have to pay slightly higher prices than a company like Citerellas for goods, but at more than 100% than city prices with your Brooklyn rent and lower headcount? And compared to a high-end grocer at that? There is no manner of super-pampered/milk-fed/spa-treated/magical chicken that should command this kind of price differential. It's plain robbery - there is no way you can spin this. In case this goes down as another 'pricing mistake' like that story about the $9/lb peppers (which went down to $6/lb which is still robbery), this pricing problem cuts across most if not all the things they carry - the oils, the anchovies, the flour, the sugar....and this is coming from someone who is willing to pay for quality. And lately, contrary to my prior beliefs, I can't even buy the quality argument anymore. I've had recent bad experiences with rancid seafood (which, to be fair they promptly refunded for) and old tasting fish over multiple occasions, I've seen improper storage of unskillfully filleted dry, grayed out fish in their open fridge (fish on top of fish, not even touching ice, sitting there all day - gross). [2013 update: They seem to have cleaned up their act on the fish display, prices are still ridiculous though] As for the meat section, I can understand the poor selection due to space constraints, and I had been a regular and very vocal advocate of their meat section, but I've come to realize recently that the quality claim, when referenced against lower priced high-end/sustainable grocers just doesn't hold water, nor is anything they carry that exquisitely special to command the price premium. I loved this place, and I really wanted to keep loving them. The people who work there are VERY nice, sweet folks, always friendly, always helpful, and the cheese selection is truly excellent. Really like that they support organic, fair-trade products, and that they are really into sustainably acquired seafood - this much good I have to say. Mostly, it's great to have a one-stop organic grocer so close by. I also like the idea of supporting local businesses and really hope they stick around. Plus they do stock some pretty obscure stuff. For all these reasons, they get 2 stars. This said, I had to ask myself - how much should you pay for convenience and the ethos? Double the price? Seriously? Do we Fort-greeners seriously BELIEVE the prices are worth it, or are we simply (indulge my word-coining) THINKING-WISHING they are worth it because they are the only such grocer around? I've since found a very good meat shop on Smith street, that delivers to Fort Greene, that my chef friend recommended - Los Paisanos. Very reasonable 'brooklyn' prices, excellent knowledgeable service, they carry a nice selection of organic/natural meats, and offer up anything from your everyday cuts to premium dry aged beef and venison - MUCH MUCH Cheaper. Yes they sell veal and fois gras too, but if you're not down with that, just don't buy those things from them. If you want excellent pastries, there's Beny's on Fulton and Clermont and Michael Allen's Desserts on Fulton and Franklin - good quality stuff. Now I just have to find a quality fish shop I can trust, the rest of my produce shopping I can probably get by via the farmers market. I'll probably have to keep buying cheese from Provisions, but that's OK I suppose. All said, this whole thing is probably my own fault, it's their business and they charge whatever they like, I just should have known better than to continue supporting their ridiculous prices by being a regular. I have no vendetta against Provisions, and I (still) really want them to succeed, i just hope they start to reflect on their aggressive pricing, the neighborhood they are in, and start to adjust their profitability goals in a way that is commensurate with real value, not just packaging and ethos. read more

It is a nice place, although the shape of the supermarket is interesting. It's in a U shape, and the space is tight. They have a nice selection of cheeses, meats and breads. My favorite cheeses to get there are Midnight Moon, and their variety of bleu cheese is impressive. Their Bresola is also delicious, and cut well. My favorite part of coming to Provisions is the tasting options they have. I've had delicious salsa, juices and cookies. One thing I've found a little disagreeable is when you go the meat section, sometimes they have skinned animal heads on display. When we asked if they could NOT have animal heads right there, creeping everyone out, they said that they put them there because some people want to buy them and the store wants to show that they are available for purchase. While this is a good way to make sure all of the meat is used, and a rather graphic reminder of the inherent barbarity of meat-eating, I think they should have a sign that says, "We have heads." Or something like that instead of just letting them sit there. Luckily, the people that work there are nice. read more

Seriously, their sausages (made in-house) are to die for and the guys behind the butcher counter are so helpful. The coffee is fine -- kind of bitter and they're cheap with the ice. The set up to get milk, pay and wait is a nightmare -- I guess they're moving across the street to serve coffee, hopefully they feng shui that stress when they move -- cause it's annoying. I would not accuse anyone who works there (or at any of the Green Grape businesses) to be friendly -- there's a guy at the fish counter who is just plain rude, all the time. Their skirt steak is rocking, which makes up for his unpleasantness. Their cheesemongers are snobs, but it goes with the territory -- I was 'educated' on the complications of making fontina last weekend when I suggested I might pass due to the cost. Really, i go there for premium meats or fish and coffee in a pinch. If we are all being honest with ourselves there is no place good for coffee in fort greene so, again, this place is fine. Today i stopped by and was asked if I wanted my penny back when i paid for my coffee. How do i answer that question? Really? Getting my change back is optional? As the customer, I thought I called the shots when it comes to leaving a penny or not. But, again, it goes with the territory there. i am probably not going to return because i find that to be really annoying, which is bummer because I like coffee even if it's mediocre... By the way, I don't feel comfortable leaving it less than three stars because that skirt steak is amazing -- and had it not been for the fish dude, coffee lady this morning or the cheese guy last saturday, I would have tossed it a fiver. read more

I really appreciate their effort to let customers know about the farms products come from and while there's always a chance it's all in my head, I could swear their stuff tastes 10x better than what they have at my supermarket. I think my only problem with this store is that the aisles are as narrow as humanly possible, but they still insist on stocking shelves during their busiest open hours. Fantastic quality meat and fish, among other things. Complaints about pricing are unfortunate: the quality does justify the cost, for the most part (with the exception of, say, Arm and Hammer baking soda.) True, this means it is not for everyone, but if you can afford to be picky with regard to quality and convenience, and appreciate knowledgeable service, this place is fantastic. If not, of course, there is always Pathmark up the street. Do agree, though, that vegetables are hit and miss for the price and that the farmers' market or the Paisley Farm CSA, for instance, are a better alternative. read more

Greene Grape succeeds as the ideal food market that any neighborhood would be lucky to have. Walking through, you can tell that every item that is stocked in the store is done so with the utmost attention to integrity and values which support local agriculture and food production. For people who complain that it is too expensive, I contend that every where else is too cheap--you won't find the brands that the Greene Grape takes pride in stocking (and if you don't believe me, ask anyone behind the deli counter, because they really know their food). Furthermore, I've been a frugal grad student for over a year now, and if I can afford to do all my shopping at Provisions and not be broke, then so can you. read more

This store could be great but it's just not. The employees are at best unfriendly, at worst incredibly rude. This attracts a certain clientele - those who are too cool to say "excuse me" as they ram a baby stroller into your shins or push you into the produce. I don't mind paying extra for organic, local products but the attitude that comes along with the exorbitant prices is unnecessary. Most of the people who work here are nice and that makes if worth going. The prices are high and this cannot be ones main grocery store. Pathmark is not too far away and one can balance ones expenses by buying some there and some here. I love the organic fruit, but other things, like the tortillas are expensive and bad. Go to Pathmark for things like that! The cheeses are wonderful and the fish has been great this summer. read more

I ordered a cheese platter for a holiday party I was going to. They charged me $50 for a small platter of cheese that was 1/2 filled with grapes and crackers & the cheese itself was mediocre. To make matters much worse, they have a $30 refundable deposit for the platter it is served on so when you return it you are supposed to get you deposit back. Well when I returned the platter the idiot at the register charged me an additional $30 instead of refunding it so I had to waste my time and energy to get my now $60 back. The only positive was that the platter looked nice. Overall mediocre food, bad service, dumb, untrained workers. Save your time & money... go elsewhere. read more
