Like most of the reviews, I would use this place more if the prices were lower. It's an organic/fine foods grocer so the chances of that happening are slim. Other than that, I've always had a positive experience with this place. The staff is polite, helpful, happy, friendly. The lattes are very good. The baked goods are good, but don't get the bran muffin because it tastes like barf with sugar on top. I once bought wild salmon here and asked for them to remove the bones. I got home to find that they didn't remove the bones... I recently bought two navel oranges and they both were WONDERFUL. I was very pleased. Will I go back? Of course. read more

We come every single week and buy specialty items throughout the store. Every single week. I go to the farmers market with my toddler beforehand and get her an apple which she eats in her stroller. Before even entering the store the apple was put in a cup holder out of my daughter's reach. When checking out, I didn't realize the one cashier wasn't open and she rudely told me she wasn't. So I went to the other cashier, lo and behold, the manager was behind the first register. As I was checking out, she asked if I took a honeycrisp and I said no. Then she said her staff "saw me take it", I again emphatically said "no, it's from the farmers market". I wasn't eating it, I hadn't even touched it since entering, and it wasn't yours or a honeycrisp for that matter, it was mine. The first time is a confirmation ('oh did you forget?'), the second time you bring up your 'staff' which DIDNT see something which DIDNT happen it's an accusation. And for what? A 50 cent apple? Was that the reason to lose a customer? Would it have hurt you to say 'Oh, sorry then'? Last time I ever come. Sorry. I'll travel twice the distance before I suffer an unfounded public accusation. What can I say? Greene Grape Provisions is, as my buddy Zane posted on Foursquare, the place where white people come to spend $8 on a shallot. Two things: Zane can say that because he is white; and he is absolutely correct. Provisions is pricey. But they are also wonderful. Fresh fish, excellent cuts of meat, produce that seems to have been blessed by the agricultural gods themselves. Not to mention some delicious sandwiches and a cheese selection that far surpasses that of any other within the borough. The staff are amazing as well. Friendly and knowledgable, everyone who works at Provisions has a great attitude and make shopping here a pleasure. If you're in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area, I encourage you to shop at Provisions at least once. No, it's probably not going to be your everyday grocer, but on occasion it's nice to stop by, say hello to the good folks working here, and pick up a shallot or two. read more

Before marketing execs coopted sustainability, local, organic, and DIY as buzzwords...20 years ago, marketing execs pounced on gourmet food terms. Polenta, semolina, delicate water crackers and soda bread, any food that sounded European or produced with an exacting process. Unlike current local and vegan snacks, this food was dainty and elitist without being healthful. I still haven't forgotten a new yorker caption 'I'll buy anything that says poids net on it.' Greene Provisions straddles this line as a specialty foods store masquerading as some general store. Everything is freaky expensive. It has a usual suspects selection of organic produce that's good in a pinch. I can cherry pick for my weird health nut needs, raw turmeric root, Jerusalem artichoke, satsuma, organic lemon. But also limp Satur Farms greens, tasteless basil, and overpriced sliced fruit not ten blocks away from the great fort Greene farmers market. Specialty foods is so 90s. Yet Greene Provisions keeps up the locavore illusion. A tempting salami and cheese counter with a local twist. Grass fed beef in the butchery section. The guy who mans this counter is solicitous. The small batch hot sauce counter is nice but extensive enough to be self congratulatory when I'm just looking for local Sriracha. Theres an oil with chili flake and sun dried tomatoes imported from Tunisia in an oily jar (?) but cooking oils are from the suspect brand Spectrum naturals and no nutiva extra virgin coconut oil to be found. A twee luxury brand called Pork Clouds convinces middle class hipster parents to eat pork rinds (they're like puffy single origin clouds!) with its matte packaging. A good brand of coconut water is housed next to flower flavored sodas. I seem to find many highly specific things but not the macadamia oil or coconut yoghurt I'm looking for. The best thing about this store for me is the extensive freezer and snack isles. They stock my favorite fine and raw chocolate in their extensive local chocolate section. They also used to collaborate with a bakery that made its own delicious twinkies and ding dongs. The dairy section has products i cant resist: white mustache yogurt, the best, richest dairy yogurt I've ever eaten in a glass pot with tangy sour cherry on the bottom. A dark and creamy chocolate pudding. Soy milk but no almond milk because f me right? The cashiers are usually friendly and casual, sometimes accommodating my random remarks that pass for small talk. read more

My biggest complaint about the Greene Grape is that sometimes the items aren't priced or the items on the shelf are not the items that have prices listed below. For example, my boyfriend and I just went in to get some cocoa mix for hot chocolate. There were a few different options all claiming to range from $6-8. My boyfriend chose the Wicked cocoa mix and it ended up being $18! For powder hot chocolate mix. Had I been at the register, I would have put it back and gotten a different variety but I had already walked outside to wait. I've lived in the neighborhood for about four years and this is the only place I buy meat in NYC. I trust where they're sourcing the meat from (everything is raised locally on sustainable farms) and the butchers are all wildly knowledgeable about every cut because they butcher whole animals. They are also always experimenting with custom sausages. They have a Vietnamese one (I think it's called the banh mi sausage) that has cilantro and fish sauce and somehow is amazing. I also always get the garlic brined pork chop whenever they have it -- you can see how well-marbled it is and it's not the healthiest thing you can eat because of the marbling that makes it tender and juicy, but it's worth it. A quick lunch or dinner for me is a seared steak of one of the cheaper leaner cuts of beef (usually top round) with just salt and pepper --- you can actually taste the difference from farm to farm and they sometimes have wagyu mixed into the beef cut offerings. read more

The scones are DELICIOUS! Best scone I've had outside of London... an oat scone with a nice cup of tea. The scones were just the right amount of dry, crumbly, not sweet flavor with tiny currents and real oats. The cheese selection was very impressive, I walked away with about $50 worth of cheese (and I drove to Brooklyn from Massachusetts... to see Cate Blanchett in BAM's A Streetcar Named Desire) and had to drive back after the show! So my husband and I stocked up on cheese for me and prosciuotto and cured meats for him. The oval Italian peasant bread had a perfect crust and was soft and fluffy inside. The baguette looked better than it tasted...but was great toasted in the oven. Pros: wonderful, eclectic cheese selection, delicious baked goods and bread, knowledgeable and helpful cheese staff with great attitudes, situated in a cute Brooklyn neighborhood. Cons: Very understaffed behind all the counters (especially cheese) and overstaffed at the cafe... there was a really long line of impatient Park Slope mommies with daggers in their eyes while we waited for our food to be prepared because there was only one person working the cheese counter versus several in the boucherie and several in the cafe. *Prices were expensive but fair considering the market they are selling to and the quality of the product. read more

I love this place.. I probably shouldn't because its pricey, but it's such a cute little specialty shop. They have great cheeses and really nice meats and fish. I'm not sure where they get the meats/fish but it's the best in the area IMO. They also have tasty sweets, (I love the double chocolate cookies!) nice breads, and pretty good coffee. They also sell local produce, which is nice, but otherwise I wouldn't purchase produce from there as it's about the same quality as other, cheaper, produce in the area. Went to this location today around 4 for the first time with a specific small list to hunt for my dinner for my family, first stepped in and WOW! The produce was amazing and the deli had excellent soup i felt like i didnt want to leave until i met the butchers they definitely know their stuff! After about 20 minutes of enjoying myself i thought let me head on out and told the big gentleman at the register with the glasses and a beard by the coffee grinder that this was my first visit and i loved it and he thanked me for the compliment and he hoped that greene grape had made me feel welcome, definitely coming again!! read more

Yea, it's a bit cramped so it can seem a bit chaotic when it's near mealtime. And sure, this place isn't somewhere you go for a bargain. But they definitely have specialty items to offer, and if you shop right, you can leave with some very nice ingredients without breaking the bank. They get in a cow and a pig each week on the regular, so you can plan and call ahead to reserve the cut that you want. The sausages are absolutely delicious, the seafood is always so fresh, and they have a great selection of charcuterie. Plus, they get in a variety of produce according to the season and this week they offered wild ramps and ferns! I have no clue what to do with them but I am happy to see that they are available to me if I wanted to try. Anyway, I love this place so five stars for Greene Grape Provisions by me! read more

While everyone keeps talking about this place being overpriced, I'd argue that in some cases you get what you pay for. While I wish the produce at my local grocery looked and tasted as good as the items at Greene Grape do, more often than not they don't. And, they aren't even much more expensive here than at the grocery. And I don't end up cutting out half of it for being rotten or gross! Victory! Greene Grape has all sorts of provisions that are both interesting and straight up fun to try. If I were a millionaire, I would have a field day here. I'm not saying you should do your everyday shopping here, but if you're looking for high quality not run of the mill stuff, this is the spot. Route 11 Crab Chips! I rest my case. The cheese counter is epic, and the sopressata I had, I would've eaten all in one go if I didn't know how to pace myself/value my health. I've also had the soups and prepared salads, and while I'm more of a fan of making my own stuff in that category, sometimes I'm lazy and having else someone do it for me rules. This is a special occasion dinner party prep/foodie splurge sort of place. Unless you're Tom Colicchio, you're not going to shop here for your weekly groceries. And you shouldn't, unless you want to go broke. I hate to say this since the service is great and the employees are quite knowledgeable; but if they are having trouble staying afloat without price-gouging they could probably stand to cut back on staff. Every time I enter there are at least 6 employees wandering around behind the counters, which is pretty remarkable for such a small place. I do appreciate the high level of service that overstaffing affords but I simply can't afford to pay the high prices it demands. So Greene Grape Provisions shall remain an occasional treat. And I'm fine with that, as long as they're fine with only having me as an occasional customer. Sorry I keep harping on you, Green Grape, but I keep getting disappointed. The other day I went in to buy some guacamole and some rice crackers. I paid $8.99 for the small container of guacamole. I remember thinking that it was a little higher than normal but chalked it up to the fact that I had read about some avocado shortage. Fast forward a couple of days and I go and buy another container of guacamole but this time it costs only $4.99. I mention the difference to the cashier but he just looks at me blankly and asks me, "credit or debit?" I really want to support local vendors and local farmers but I just feel like it's costing me more than it should. Oh- and I also bought a rib eye steak the other day and again was disappointed in the quality-- even when cooked to medium rare, it was very very tough. When Green Grape first opened, they had a kick ass butcher and I could always count on the quality of their steaks and other cuts of meat. Now- not so much. A few of the staff may be too-cool-for-school but most of my interactions with staff have been alarmingly pleasant and friendly. When I asked him for a recommendation he thought hard, went to the computer, sought information but had a habit of enhancing his thinking by rubbing his lips, pulling at his nose, and stroking his mustache. He would then pull out a cheese, cut a sliver, and pass it to me wearing no gloves. I suppose there may be someone out there who thinks that that's not disgusting. My first time at this store was an experience I will always remember. I had the awesome pleasure in receiving help from a beautiful lady by the name of Laura. She did not become annoyed when I asked her for help, this really makes a difference to a customer shopping in an establishment like this. As a matter of a fact even after asking for help and she assisted towards the ending of my shopping experience she once again askd me did I need her assistance. Every once in a while I get a nice employee who seems to be happy to help me with something, but mostly the employees act like the customer is a nuisance. Ex: The employee checking me out never said a word to me, except to tell me how much my groceries cost, because he was too busy having a conversation with his coworker about a TV show. We come here a lot. Usually when I am visiting friends in FG and my bank account is subsequently ballin' for the day. They are pricey as hell but the quality for certain items is great. I'm a little addicted to the Kale soup they serve. Like it is really really really good!!! My last visit I kind of went crazy getting a lrg kale soup, some roasted sweet potatoes and a cous cous salad with shrimp (the latter two are charged by the lb) 45 dollars later my items are bagged and I leave. Sadly only getting a block away before all my items bust out through the broken bottom of the bag. My la croix soda can suffering the worse and bursting open completely spraying cran-raspberry soda all over Fulton St. I went back with my broken bag on the verge of tears from losing my entire meal to the mean no streets. When I explained why happened they were soooo apologetic immediately replaced my soup, sweet potatoes and cous cous (throwing in an extra 1/2 lb fo free!!!). This is a tricky review for me to write. We need places like Provisions in the neighborhood, but we don't need another price gouging 'fresh foods' market. For me, Provisions is hit-and-miss. Some things are obnoxiously overpriced while others are fairly priced (for NYC). I was addicted to the ground lamb for a while; now the price has jumped and I won't buy it on principle ($5.99/lb at Fairway, $8.99/lb at Provisions?!). I worried they'd raise their prices once they had people excited. Sure enough they have. I recently went in and was so disgusted with the prices for items I needed that I just left. If you want to have a laugh, go check what they're asking for tortillas or macaroni salad. Shocking. - - - UPDATE: Since I posted this, the Provisions' butcher has contacted me directly (I will also note that I got a nasty email which clearly originated from an employee or owner). I really appreciate his taking the time to contact me, and we subsequently had a good exchange, but I don't need a lecture on economics (trust me, I've studied macro and micro economics) or to be convinced they have good service when in my experience it has been spotty (note: I have always had very good experience at the butcher counter). The fact of the matter is, if they have to charge these prices to break even, their business model is flawed and they should not have agreed to pay the rent they do. I don't know those details so I can't speculate, but I do know their prices are too high for us and we continue to shop elsewhere (except for a few items, like milk, when we need them). The Fort Greene farmer's market, Fairway, Chelsea Market and other places are alternatives where we often get better or equal quality at a lower price. Yes, sometimes we have to travel to those places (though where we work makes it sometimes convenient), but that is a choice we have made so we can save money and eat well. read more

Sure it may cost a few dollars more, but you really shouldn't eat meat too often anyway. They also have amazing cheese, but great cheese isn't as hard to find as great meat. We just recently moved into this trendy neighborhood from Chicago. We thought about the options for groceries in the neighborhood and some of our neighbors told us about your shop. We have be frequent from the past year and had walked into the store and heard some strange things in what we thought was a family friendly store. We frequent during the day while the kids are at school and my husband works. The few times I came in the morning the young woman with the short hair cut. She is normally nice. Now me being a school teacher understand everyone has as a bad day or bad time but this girl has a mouth on her. The few times I'm referring to she has been in the presence of Male employees and has a lot of real nasty things shes saying,talking with her hand and cursing. Not sure if these friends or co-workers, but this type of behavior in a grocery store shouldn't be acceptable. I'm not perfect and no one is but you have kids coming in and out of this establishment. About a week ago I was walking my daughter to the train and we were going to stop in but same girl was in front of your store yelling and cursing again. Is this the type of behavior we should look for when we come in to shop. She was yelling and threatening and cursing my daughter did not even bother to stop anymore. I'm not sure if we will be back but if we do I hope this young lady has a better attitude or no longer there. This is outrageous and un acceptable. Agreeing to most of the other comments here - this place is extremely overpriced. Everything down to breakfast in the morning. They are the only place around the neighborhood that have fresh meat and seafood, but buying a dinner there is as expensive as eating out. What I usually do and would recommend is to stock up on meat at Pathmark and just buy fresh vegetables during dinner time at Fresh Garden to avoid this overpriced place. The staff there is a hit-and-miss. Most of them are as obnoxious as the pricing where some of them are friendly. Definitely not fabulous. Nor is it a "foodie" place. An air of laziness belies the precious, corner-store image the store cultivates. For example, the freshness of anything they sell is best visually represented by the shriveled produce this store tries to peddle, just past the $6 potato chips. Lastly, anyone who has spent any appreciable amount of time underground in New York would not leave her basement doors open ALL HOURS OF THE DAY. That's all I'll say.
