This place was great. Only thing is that it's in a dry county. So if you're not from the area be aware there is no beer at this place. That being said the good was great. The service was friendly enough. They were straight to the point. I had the combination plate. Selection of any two meats. My selection was catfish and pulled pork. I was quite a happy camper. My dining partners ordered ribs and pulled pork. All in all the table was not disappointed. For us Northerners, they have something down here called "white BBQ sauce". It's mayo based and really good. We debated for a bit if it should be sitting on the table vice the fridge but that ended as soon as the first basket of those hush puppies landed on our table! Those things are addicting and unlimited. Fantastically fried and golden delicious. The catfish is pond raised on site and was battered and deep fried like my mom would make. I didn't finish the pork but it is gonna make for a tasty lunch this afternoon. There was also coleslaw. A little on the sweet side for my taste but it was still good. And it's minced, which I had never seen before. But it definitely doesn't take away from its goodness. The Greenbrier is also inexpensive. My combination plate was only $15. It came with two meats, choice of one side (French fries, salad, baked potato, or baked sweet potato), and unlimited hush puppies! All in all this was a great place to eat. I would not waste my time coming to this place. If you like huge portions of fried stuff, then this is a place for you. Pros: the servers are very nice, they have large cups for iced tea and my drink never ran out, the hush puppies are pretty good. Cons: the chicken strips I had were straight out of a Sysco box and had a funny metallic flavor to them, the fries were cold and the coleslaw was vinegary and bitter. The man that was the cashier/owner was rude to my husband. He was very friendly to the guy checking before my husband, but when it was my husband's turn to pay, he slid my husband's card and chucked it on the counter and barked at my husband about leaving a tip. This isn't a way to conduct business especially if you are in a service based industry, but maybe some people like to run off their customers. Stopped here on our way home from vacation. My travel companion remembered eating here over ten years ago. Walked in a little before 1 pm on a Monday, had lunch and were walking out within a half hour. Super quick service, friendly server, they bring out hushpuppies while you wait, and the menu is straightforward with only the essentials. Vinegar coleslaw was great and comes on the pulled pork sandwich, along with pickles. Pork was delicious, and I was glad they had three sauces--I prefer vinegar hot sauce, while my friend opted for the traditional Alabama white sauce. Greenbrier is the real deal! The setting is charming in a minimalist, down-home way. It's in a fairly secluded location amongst the farm fields and cows. The decor is standard issue plastic picnic-table cloth and no frills chairs/tables, but the vibe is very comfortable. You get the feeling that there has been a lot of happy eating in the place. The meal started of with wonderful hushpuppies. In retrospect, I should've had the sweet tea, but went with water as the human body can only handle so many calories...lol I had the combo with fried catfish and ribs. Both were absolutely outstanding (esp the ribs) and perfectly complemented by a host of mystery sauces ("white sauce", a vinegar-based hot sauce, rib sauce (sweet bbq), and tartar sauce - all of them were very good). I grew up eating at Greenbrier. To avoid any confusion, this is the old original Greenbrier that is across from the gin in "downtown" Greenbrier. The one located near I-565 isn't worth the trouble. I should note that even though I grew up in north Alabama eating traditional Southern food that I not a major fan of pork BBQ or catfish. I don't eat a lot of fried food, because I don't like greasy food. Most people rave about the catfish or the pork BBQ at Greenbrier, but I want to tell you about the fried chicken livers. They are possibly the BEST chicken livers EVER! They are crispy & crunchy, but still moist & tender! The complementary hush puppies are the only hush puppies that I eat. I prefer mine with white BBQ sauce, but they are good on their own. Be sure to try them with all the sauces on the table & pick your favorite! When I eat the pork there, I usually top it with the rib sauce & the BBQ sauce. The rib sauce is a homemade version of what most of the world thinks of as BBQ sauce. The BBQ sauce is the typical pork BBQ sauce of the area. It is vinegar-based & has a good bit of cayenne. It is important to note that I actually eat the pork here by choice, because that's rare for me. My dad is a huge fan of their ribs & with that sauce who can blame him. Another traditional Southern element is that you can get sliced onion on the side. I don't know of a Southern country kitchen that doesn't serve raw onion (& in the summer, tomato) to accompany every meal. This is not an upscale restaurant & doesn't claim to be, but if you want good Southern food in a fun atmosphere then eat here! read more

Great homey place. Hush puppies are fantastic. Pulled pork is good too. Portions are big, so come hungry. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. I have lived almost next to this restaurant all my life. It is much better than the one on the interstate. Eating inside is okay, but since I'm a local, 90% of the time I'll order takeout. The interstate location might somehow be related by blood, but that's where they draw the line. The "new" location has taken the business side of serving food, while this restaurant is still family. I've been coming here since I was a kid and just moved back from Colorado, so I wanted to check GB out to see if they've still got it. Number 1, be prepared to be very full, as I take half of my meal home to eat later. I have to say GB has the second best hush puppies I've ever eaten in my life. You can't go wrong with their fried catfish (tip: order whole catfish, not filet). The service here is always fast and friendly spiked with that southern hospitality that you don't find at every restaurant as you use to in the south. Try the hush puppies with the "rib sauce." I don't know what it is about this sauce because it is simple and ketchup based with a smoky flavor, but I love it. In the past I have had their bbq as well and it was pretty good. This time I had ribs with my catfish and oysters, but I have to say I was upset because they were probably the driest ribs I've ever had in my life. I really don't see the draw for this restaurant. One thing is certain: if you are Seventh Day Adventist, Jewish or Muslim then there are only two dishes on the menu that you could eat, that being the chicken or the hamburger steak. All the other meat dishes are unclean meat. All the fish is bottom dwelling catfish. No clean fish on the menu. I had the chicken. It was listed as barbeque chicken but it wasn't. It was only cooked chicken. It was good enough, but I wanted barbeque. My guest had the barbeque pork. It was only cooked meat also, not barbeque. I really love barbeque but in this area people don't know what real barbeque is. Real barbeque is beef cooked in a sauce,not dried meat with a bottle of sauce on the table. I would think that a place as diverse as Huntsville would have some good barbeque joints nearby but so far everything is just variations of dried out swine meat. read more

I moved away from this area 11 years ago. At that time, old greenbrier had roaches. My family has DRUG me there on 3 different visits home and I've walked out each time because there were roaches in our food, on our table, or in general areas. I went back today, after 5 years, and they still have roaches. One crawled across my shirt when we were waiting on our meal and I walked out. I've never lived with roaches. I do not find this acceptable. I intend to report their business to the AL health department and I hope this keeps people from similar experiences. DISGUSTING! read more
